I had high hopes for Coeur since it has been named restaurant of the year 2024. Let's start with the ambiance when you look at their website you expect a bit more lavish seating and more decor on the walls. Bar area could have been done better for a restaurant positioning as upscale and new. Onto the food. Menu is small with small shareable plates and main entry. Shareable plates we tried beef tartare, bread, grilled octopus. For 4 people it was definitely not much to share. Beef tartare was flavorful, bread with parmesan shaving was good and octopus was burnt. For main dish we tried oxtail and Sea-bass. Oxtail portion was comical with tiny bit of gnocchi and pieces of meet. Sea-bass was too salty and the base sauce was flavorless. Drinks were great. Service was great. To sum it up food was a let down. Wouldn't be coming back. read more

While it looks like the restaurant has recently closed, I still wanted to give my flowers from my experience there. My wife and I went for her birthday this past April and absolutely loved our meal. The staff had all signed a card for her, which was so thoughtful. We basically went down the menu and ordered the bread as a starter, salad as our greens, and two entrees, and dessert. We absolutely loved everything we had and it definitely exceeded our expectations. Looking forward to what the chef does next. read more

On a recent trip up to Michigan to see family, I stopped in for dinner and let me tell you it was the best meal of the trip. We started off with the wagyu steak tartare and it was a high point to start off with for sure. A perfect appetizer leading into the entrees we chose, which was the ravioli. I was honestly so impressed by not only the dish, but the fact that I briefly mentioned to the waitress that I have a garlic and onion sensitivity and she made sure to mention it to the kitchen so my dish was less garlicky. So unexpected, but made the meal much more enjoyable for me! I also had the ice cream sandwich for dessert and it was so, so good! Perfect for a hot summer day (and it definitely was that particular day)! Overall, my experience here was truly five star. We stopped by on Sunday at 11am for brunch. We made reservations but they weren't needed since there were only two other parties there. The service was friendly and super speedy - we got our food, ate, and paid all within 30 minutes. The inside was pretty spacious with plenty of seating at tables and at the bar. There is also a patio with a few tables out back. The Coeur-ccino was delicious. The sourdough pancakes were good and enormous. The hash was good but was on the fattier side which wasn't our favorite but the flavor of the hash and the potatoes was pretty good. The interior looks so different from Assagi, more whimsical. Katie is waiting on us tonight. Ordered the beets, spring greens, maitake mushrooms, octopus, chicken, gnocchi and scallops. $196.10. The course dinner is kept a surprise, required full table participations. The beets are food, comes with a goat cheese filled puff pastry, which was okay. The greens wasn't too bad, the rhubarb vinaigrette is super light. The greens are so dark and healthy looking. The maitake is pretty good, a tad greasy though, which seems to have saturated through the batter some. The mint dip is quite good and has a great touch of the mint flavoring to it, quite different. The octopus is nicely grilled and tender, the char flavor is however all I taste. The Gnocchi was okay, a tad soft for our liking, the morel mushrooms are good. More English peas. My hubby preferred the gnocchi from last week at Pastaio better. The scallops are melt in your mouth good. The sauce is good, the hint of orange flavoring is nice. Frankly, had never heard of this place before going. Operates out of the old Assagi location. Went for the tasting menu and was pretty impressed. The waitress Sajel, was lovely and explained the food without sounding too pretentious. The vibe was upscale, but not to the point where you would feel out of place in jeans and flip flops. Cute lil plates! Adorable drinks! Attentive service! Expensive... but takes food from beyond something to ingest and turns it into an experience. And really, not that expensive for what it is (we paid about 240$ plus tip for tasting menu for 2 with non alcoholic drinks). We came here to celebrate an anniversary (reservation made in advance, $20 hold put on card) and they accommodated my vegan diet and my husband's omnivorous one swimmingly. So yes, they can make vegan food! Just please let them know when you make that rsvp. Each plate and drink was beautifully presented and introduced, quickly whisked away when we finished. They brought out fresh silverware for each course too. Our waiter, Hunter was charming. The mixologist who brought us our drinks was very knowledgeable and friendly too. Wish I'd caught their name! At the end of the meal they surprised us with printouts of our menus and all the staff signed one to commemorate our special day. Restrooms are single occupancy, gender neutral, and clean. Water is flat or sparkling, your choice. And it never ran out, which says a lot because I drink a lot of water! These folks really pay attention. My favorite dish was the mushroom gnocchi, the gnocchi absolutely melted. My husband called them "little pillows". My second favorite was the sorbet, I'm a sucker for citrus and it was definitely some high quality grapefruit up in there! The cauliflower was perfectly cooked, also melty with the crunch of the fried outer layer balancing it out. And I'm usually not a leek fan, but the way the leek was roasted... superb! Time commitment was under 2 hours, but we were the only ones in the restaurant for the first hour. I imagine it could take longer once things get busy. Last night Enzo and I went to Couer in Ferndale! We had beef tartare, potato croquettes, bone marrow, tempura fried maitake mushrooms, bread and olives, chicken, scallops, and a french macaron. The scallops were the stand out dish of the night for us. The flavors were incredible and the cook on them was perfect. TBH we liked these flavors more than the scallops at Hell's kitchen. The chicken also didn't disappoint with flavor and was cooked perfectly. Everything else was kind of mid, the tartare, bone marrow, and croquettes were pretty flavorless and could've used some seasoning. The desert did blow us away, it was so big and the flavors were sweet peanutty and salty sweet. It was so cute for the holidays too! Overall, glad we went but probs wouldn't go back. As somewhat of a Francophile when it comes to food & drink, I'm so excited that this place opened right down the street from me! The decor is simple but nice-looking, the patio is large and comfortable, and the service is friendly. The steak I ordered was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and I also really enjoyed the potato dauphinoise it came with. Their wine selection is thoughtful and not obnoxiously priced -- that is often a bummer at other nice restaurants, with good wine priced in such a way that I'd rather not even bother. We ended up ordering two bottles here, each priced at only slightly over 2x retail price, which feels reasonable. If I'm nitpicking anything, it would be that the regular waitstaff doesn't seem to be well-versed on the wine list, but they do have a very nice sommelier who can help if you need a specific recommendation. Overall, a fantastic first visit. It's not cheap (though not overpriced either), so it'll probably be more of a date night place rather than a regular spot for me, but I'll definitely be back. read more

I'm not used to find dining, I grew up extremely poor, but my boyfriend wanted to go here. We got the tasting menu and if you get that, everyone at the table has to get that. To be honest, I was not a fan of any course. I felt really bad because I tried to like it and I'm sure if you like these foods they're good, it was cuddle, fish, white fish, quail, and mushrooms. I felt like everything had the same aftertaste. It has a very eerie vibe, it feels like the movie The Menu. Our waitress was super sweet though because she could tell I felt sick from the food and gave us a bunch of extra desserts. Service workers were super kind! What a great addition to downtown Ferndale! This French restaurant opened about a month ago and has a seasonal rotating menu. Our bartender/server Derek was amazing- he was friendly, knowledgeable and seemed excited about the restaurant. Coeur is open for brunch on the weekends and dinner. They have indoor seating as well as a lovely patio with twinkle lights. The interior is decorated very Scandinavian- clean and simple. The large plates were the perfect amount of food but didn't try any of the small plates. They also have their own pastry chef and it seems like they make some really interesting desserts. My friend and I sat at the bar (full food service, except you can't do the tasting menu there). They have an impressive drink menu, with wine, cocktails, beer, mocktails, etc. I ordered the watermelon splash mocktail with lime and cranberry and it was light, tart and served with a big ice cube- very tasty and not too sweet! I ordered the bbq chicken and practically licked the plate clean. The bbq glaze was subtle but paired really nicely with the corn puree, veggies and potatoes. The whole dish was balanced really well with sweet, smoky and salty flavors. I stole a few of my friends French fries and they were really salty and delicious as well. We finished with Choco tacos- really delicate buttery wafers filled with frozen cream (a little lighter than ice cream) and dipped in dark chocolate with pistachio crumbles topped with whipped cream. The ambiance was lovely, with gorgeous wood details that tied the walls to the menu. They provided an annotated menu with all of the dairy free options, and the pastry chef Carla had made a special dessert option that was dairy free and gluten free just in case we wanted dessert. Beautiful atmosphere- although someone played with the dimmers quite a bit while we were eating. Service was enthusiastic and prompt. Our server was thoughtful about when we wanted what and also reminded us about dessert- in advance. We had the bread and mussels for appetizers, the steak and cod for entrees. And unfortunately we did not make it to dessert. I had the Coeur 75- their colorful variation on a French 75 and nicely done. I also had a glass of chenin blanc with my cod and it was delightful. The sauce for the mussels was delightful and the homemade butters for the bread were also good. My companion devoured the steak and frites. She noted it was a bit saltier than she liked and still delicious. The cod was good. Not exactly as great as I had hoped. Lovely place for a date night. Finally came here for the 1st time. The Assagi remake is quite nice. Everthing is updated and fresh. They reloacated the bar and took down the center wall. Really looks nice. Now onto the food. 4 of us got the tasting menu; 2 got the wine pairing, 2 got the non-alcoholic beverage pairing just to try. The food was super creative and interesting, but just was not overly tasty. The chef aimed for the stars, but did not quite accomlish his lofty objective. Focus was fancy appearance instead something delicious. They change the tasting menu every 2 weeks, so worth another try. They have a som who administers the wine pairing. All the wines were just flat and not very good. I would skip the wine pairing and just order something you will enjoy. The non-alcoholic pairing was just extremely sweet mocktails. Interesting, but just so terribly sweet, they were hard to drink. Food-wise, the regular menu looks more exciting. I would come back to try the regular menu items. Service: one word - excellent. We visited Coeur recently for the first time. The good: We liked the atmosphere of the restaurant.....very different from the former Assagi. Feel free to come casual. The restaurant was busy but not totally filled. Vibrant but not so noisy you can't talk to other people at your table. We started with the bread basket ($7) that comes with two excellent flavored butter...one quite spicy that I loved personally, and potatoe croquettes which were delicious....light as feather on the inside and crispy on the outside. My wife had the lamb burger and I had the steak frites. Both were cooked perfectly and very tasty as were the delightful fries that came with. We ordered the choc chip cookies for dessert which were good but have had better. Huge wine selection as well. Service was as good as it gets. The "bad"? The menu is pretty limited in terms of main plates. Although we found the portions adequate we heard others at neighboring tables complaining about the portions. Folks, you aren't at Olive Garden so don't expect an obscene amount of food to arrive on your plate. If you are looking for a new place to try on a night out I would recommend giving Coeur a try....just take a peek at the menu to make sure there are options on the menu that are appealing to you and your guests. Extremely disappointing experience. After we were sat 4 different waiters asked us for our drink orders, one right after the other. It was like they didn't know who was supposed to be in charge of our table. We then asked about happy hour (which no one had mentioned before seating us) and they informed us that it was going on but only at the bar and we had to ask again to see a menu and get more information. We then decided to splurge and get the tasting menu which was SO disappointing. Waste of $100. No salt on any of the food. One of the dishes was toast with dryyyyy ass pork belly. And another was boiled potatoes and carrots??? And then some dry, over peppered, seared tuna... how does that even happen?? It was hard to eat but we scarfed it down because we were so hungry as It took an hour and a half for the first dish to hit the table. After the first dish we considered asking them to cancel the rest of the order and leaving. Wish we had. Somehow everything tasted the same. Very little depth to the flavors. I would not recommend this place. Over priced and over hyped. I deeply regret spending so much money here. Weird ambiance too. If you want a nice tasting menu experience go to Mink in detroit. Wayyyyy better. This place genuinely make me so upset that I spent so much money. read more

We were so excited to check out a new restaurant and Coeur in Ferndale did not disappoint!! Usually tapas are a hit or miss for us, but the portions here were perfect and great for sharing. We tried the country bread that came with both sweet and savory butter. The popcorn chicken and the aioli were a great combo and the breading was perfection. We also had the bone marrow and the striped bass which were both 10/10. I wish i ordered another bass to go because it was so unique and flavorful. Our first meal at Coeur was wonderful. We started out with some mocktails which were lovely. The warm olives were delicious. It never occurred to me to warm them up, but yum. The charred octopus was perfect. It was was served as a couple of octopus arms warm from the grill on a bed of tzatziki. There were a few saffron threads as well but these didn't overwhelm the natural flavor of the octopus. It was tender, just as it should be--not the chewy, boring mollusk you may have had before. But you do have to like octopus--my dining companions didn't love it but not because it wasn't done perfectly. And of course we ordered the sourdough bread with herb butters. Don't miss it--it's worth "wasting space" on eating this bread. I had the steak which that night was a thin tenderloin cut, basically cut as a round steak. It was done perfectly and served with smashed and pan fried little potatoes and long green beans that were charred from the pan and amazing. One of us had the cod, a new menu item, and meh. It was over-salted. The waiter and manager immediately took it back and brought out a replacement dish and thanked us for pointing out the problem so that they can try to improve the dish. We weren't charged for it or for its replacement. The replacement was a burger and fries, and yes, it's worth ordering. It's in that category of burgers and fries that you'd travel for. Don't miss the homemade ketchup. I didn't taste my friend's risotto but she assured me it was great. We didn't order dessert--all three items offered were fruit-based and while they sounded lovely, I don't like fruit-based desserts. We will definitely be going back. read more

We came here for a girls night/NYE celebration and were absolutely blown away! The interior is intimate; I loved the way you could see the chefs working and how cozy the space felt. Our server was so incredibly sweet and made awesome recommendations. She started us off with amazing bread and complimentary mocktails for our celebration, this was so nice of them! I do wish the bread was warm, but the dough is made in house and was so perfectly fluffy. We then had the potato croquettes which were very yummy. For entrees, we split the cod, squash, and lamb burger. The squash was gorgeously plated and such a pretty dish. The flavors of it were incredible as well, but I don't know if it would have been filling as an entree on its own. It made for a great shareable for us. The cod was incredible, and lastly the lamb burger was absolutely divine. We ended off with the madeleines - I'd never had these before and they were so good!! They were warm and topped with powdered sugar, but the best part may have been the in house sauce that came with them. It was like a salted caramel Nutella- I still dream about it! Lovely restaurant with well executed dishes and attention to detail. We had drinks to start, a house take on the French 75 and I had a tart mocktail. Both were excellent. We tend to eat smaller proportions than the average diner, so the plan was to share two appetizers and one entree. We started with the arugula salad with radishes, popped corn (!) and a simple vinaigrette. Expertly made. The second appetizer was the tempura maitake mushroom. These were perfectly fried, tempura style. That phrasing appears on menus often, but they rarely approach true "tempura" style. This was exceptional - it was glass-shatteringly crispy and no greasiness. The ethereal opposite of beer battered mushrooms. The entree we selected was the scallops, in a miso butter prep with shiitake mushrooms and baby bok choy. Was quite rich, 3 seared scallops and veggies were distinct and not congealed into the sauce. We shared a dessert - cranberry mousse on a ginger cookie with housemade gummies. Sounds like a lot, but actually came together very nicely. The one negative is that though the service was friendly, it was a bit too chill for me. There are nights when I want to linger and slowly go through courses, and others when I want a bit of a brisk pace. With just a few covers, I felt that the service was a bit slow. First off I would like to say that our waitress was amazing and kind and this review has nothing to do with the service. We came across this French restaurant and the menu looked enticing however the food was subpar at best. Starting off with the croquettes, the inside was too runny and the texture was just off. The sauce was a burnt leek aioli which sounded tasty but literally tasted like charcoal Then, we got the steak frites- a French classic. I was disappointed with the cut of steak (hangar) it was chewy and just not what you expect to be served at this kind of restaurant. The scallops were cooked well but the garnishes that went with it did not taste good at all. I would have given 5 stars but I take issue with a very small martini glass half full. When you're paying $13+ for a drink in an expensive restaurant, a small wine pour or a ridiculously small martini is not great. The space and the staff are friendly and inviting. Maybe because it wasn't too crowded, or maybe by design, it also wasn't overly loud. The menu had a great selection. Honestly, there wasn't a thing on it that I wouldn't have liked to try. What we did settle on were three things: the tempura mushrooms, bone marrow and scallops. Overall, the dishes were excellent. Maybe it was just our choices, but everything seemed a bit too heavy on umami. It would have been a little relief to have something lighter on the plate to ease the punch of flavor and fat that came through in every bite. read more

Wanted to try this place since it's pretty new. We did the blind tasting menu, which rotates every week. The food was good, we started with a steak tartare, had a really good tomato toast, a scallop with purple sweet potatoes, and a steak. Dessert was delicious. Portions were a good size for a tasting menu. Cocktails were excellent, I just had the old fashioned but my girlfriend tried one that was wine based that she liked. Came for an early dinner on a Saturday. The atmosphere was modern and inviting. The hosts were wonderful. I was early to my reservation and was seated promptly. The Chef came over and greeted me personally as well as the sommelier. Afterword my server Randy took my order. I opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing. It was amazing. Potato croquettes with burnt leek, Mushroom and squash toast, Crudo, Black cod, steak with carrot purée and the most perfect apple tarte tatin that I've ever had. The wine was paired perfectly and the pastry chef came out to deliver tiny short bread cookies at the end of dinner. Coeur is undoubtedly going to be a Ferndale staple. I picked the spot for my bday dinner w my bf, dad and his SO. I was really looking forward to it. I think we all had the ambiance of Asaggi in our minds, and found the new decor to be unsettlingly spare, through I loved the wood-wrapped poles. My 95 yo dad was obsessed with the roughly "sculpted" support beam by the window with some lovely exposed brick and odd sharp, jutting black pieces - I'm not sure what - possibly remaining from before, intending to look arty or rustic but we're just odd. It had rained heavily that afternoon so the patio was not set up, but it has also been stripped of all warmth and charm, even if the umbrellas were up. Hollow and harsh, feeling just like the interior. Our waitress was extremely attentive and since it was my bday, they brought us some sparkling wine in gorgeous flutes. I ordered the persimmon bourbon cocktail which was great. My bf ordered a scotch and it looked like the drink was half gone when it arrived. We mentioned it and the bartender came over and told us it was because the glass was wide and walked away. Very chintzy. He orders Scotch everywhere we go, and have never seen such a pathetic excuse for a pour. I had the maitake tempura app which was great with a zhug dipping sauce. Very nice-sized portion. The others ordered the "deconstructed" salad with nectarine, plum and some cheese. I really really wish the chefs would stop with this "deconstructed" thing. It is always 100% unsatisfying to the eater. When asking for a "salad", one doesn't want some random things scattered on a large plate. There was nothing more than what might be called a small garnish of greens, a few slices of fruit (which were ripe and delicious) on there and it seems to be just an excuse to serve a micro portion make it sound fancy. My bf had the gnocchi, which he said he liked, the SO had some beef - I didn't pay attention to what, which she said was great and very tender, with a large portion of fries. Dad had the scallops which looked great. I had the cod which was excellent as was the sauce it was in, but the vegetable accompaniment was colorless (not a great thing when the sauce is a dull creamy color) and tasted awful - very faded turnip or something...? We ordered the dessert called "Rocky Road" and the waitress explained it was another "deconstructed" item with no ice cream. There were some cute, homemade toasted marshmallow dots, some nuts and I guess some Valrhona chocolate spread around a dish that was waaaay too big for the sparsely scattered contents. Again, 100% unsatisfying. There was an ice cream sandwich option that came with 2 chocolate chip cookies, which seemed excessive and an odd pairing. When we asked if we could just have the ice cream sandwich with the Valrhona chocolate, the answer was basically that she'd have to ask the pastry chef if that's possible but the cookies were going to be there as well. Weird and unsatisfying to tell someone who loves ice cream that it can't be done. They finished off with some incredibly delicious little chocolates - not sure if it was due to the bday. So, all in all, a very uneven experience I'm not eager to repeat. read more
