My wife and I were downtown Detroit yesterday and tried this place for an early dinner. Gabby was our server and she was great! The food was amazing - we each got a burger (recommended), a feta wontons appetizer and drinks. Neither of us could finish our burger but not from a lack of trying - too big! I met a friend for dinner here. We started with the Wontons, which were good. They were on the smaller side, so that was a good starter before a meal (for me). Probably not enough food if you have more than two people. I had the gnocchi for dinner. I thought they were excellent. A red (more orange sauce) with sausage and jalapenos to add flavor. I don't recall having gnocchi prepared like this. I liked the size (smaller plate) of the dish. It was not a huge bowl of pasta. I like the vibe at Olin - comfortable, but a step up from a pub. The noise level made it sound busy, but it was not too much we could not talk. Service was great. Overall a great experience, and right in the heart off downtown. My friend and I visited Olin on the evening of 7/30/26. When we entered the restaurant we were graciously greeted by Adrian who was also our server. During our visit, there were very few other diners there. Adrian was professional and very attentive. When asked about menu items, he shared his honest opinions and made recommendations. We were looking for someplace new to try before a show at the Fox and this place popped up in Yelp. We were able to get a reservation pretty easily on a busy Friday night downtown, but we were there early, which was good, because it filled up pretty quickly. The seasonal menu was a bit different from what we saw online, but a lot of the same choices were still there. We decided to focus on sharing several of the small plates offerings: Caesar salad, homemade focaccia, whipped ricotta and crab cakes. The salad was pretty bland, plus we ordered it with shrimp, which they forgot, but later brought over (and deducted it from the bill, which was nice). The focaccia was excellent, as was the whipped ricotta. The crab cakes were fine - it seems like they are the same at most places. Gabby was a great server and did an awesome job taking care of us and many other tables. I also enjoyed the overall vibe of the place - it has the cool, urban vibe that Detroit needs to have more of. read more

Ouch, don't generally give 1 star reviews - but maybe this will end up on YouTube lol Seriously, this is due to the manager being rude - whoever the manager was working the night shift on October 11 - that person needs to work on people skills. Like a lot... 5 pm reservation - things were fine - server asked us at 6:45 if we needed anything else, then proceeded to bring a birthday dessert - which was a scoop of ice cream - yay! Happy bday to me! So cool, but then we were waiting to pay bill for another 10 minutes - time check, now it's 7:10 - which again was fine - but as we were getting up to leave the manager came over and said "guys, we really need your table!" Rude rude rude I get you have reservations and people waiting, but seriously, there are better ways to handle these kind of situations. We would have left within the 2 hour timeframe, have it not been for the micro dose of ice cream, and waiting for the bill. Update: the short rib burger here is an amazing value at Olin. It's a massive portion size served alongside a heaping pile of fries. One of the best burgers in the city IMO! Did remove 1 star as sadly they have changed some of my original favorites which had me fall in love with Olin when they first opened. Olin is such a neighborhood staple, one of those spots that just hits every time. The burger was unreal (pictured because it deserved the spotlight), and the oysters were perfectly fresh. I meant to grab pics of the rest of our food but, honestly, it was gone way too fast -- always a good sign! They've got one of the best happy hours downtown, with a wide drink selection and plenty of small plates and apps to choose from. They're now open for lunch and I'm so glad! The food and service is so good here, and you can sit on the patio while it's still nice out. I had the steak salad which was large and fresh with perfectly cooked steak, the roasted pepper soup, and we split the chicken wings. We had a group of 4 and went for a business dinner. We started with the lamb meatballs and the whipped ricotta with homemade sourdough, which were phenomenal. 3 of us got the smash burger and it was absolutely amazing and lived up to the hype. Our 4th person got the "steak frites" and it was awful to say the least. First off, steak frites are supposed to be cut when they arrive and this was not. Secondly, this was at best a round top cut and it was flavorless and cooked poorly. We asked if it is normally served cut and they said no. The service was average at best as well. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and have heard rave reviews about the burgers. Maybe it was too hyped up? But it was a let down. It definitely wasn't bad, it just wasn't great, and was mediocre at best. The meat was not seasoned at all (I added salt which did help) and the overpowering cheese left little other discernible flavor. Instead of fries, I got a side Cesar salad, which was good. The dressing was very tasty. My dining companion got the gnocchi with pork belly. The gnocchi was very tasty, though extremely rich. Unfortunately, after eating her meal that night and leftovers the next day, she felt queasy each time. Service was friendly and prompt. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Overall, this is an appetizer and dessert place based on what we ordered. Came here for a midweek date night while we had the time. Cute ambience, and very casual to dressy patrons. Starters included prawns and duck risotto. The duck was extra crispy and some pieces were very dry but the dish had an overall nice appeal and flavor. The prawns had a sweet chili glaze served with polenta, bok choy and shishito peppers. After those two, I wasn't hungry for much more but we ordered the grilled half chicken to share as an entree. The sauce and sides outshined the chicken itself but it was OK. And, finally, we couldn't pass up desserts... Chocolate flourless cake with banana brulee and a hazelnut praline sauce for me and a Creme brulee with chantilly cream and berries for him. Huge fans of both, I would come back just for dessert and an espresso. Cocktails and beverage list looked good but we don't indulge in alcohol. The NA Pinot noir (Australian) was very much like juice and not worth the premium. A shame because there are really good NA ones out there and this didn't pair well or pass. read more

First of all, the service. My server, Samantha, was patient with my questions in trying to figure out what I wanted to order. She was attentive and friendly throughout the meal. She gave me some recommendations and I ended up really wanting the potatoes appetizer but the burger came with French fries. Concerned that it would be too much potatoes, she was able to make it possible to sub my fries for the potatoes. I also ordered the "Don't Touch Mai Drink" which was extremely tasty as well. So the potatoes bravas. Amazing. They're crispy and buttery, packed with flavor and a generous portion. And the short rib burger... mmm... just thinking about it is making me mouth water. It is so juicy, the only thing I left behind was a plate of leftover juices. It may have been a touch too greasy but that's what a good burger is supposed to be. It most definitely has that smashburger texture and taste. You 100% need to come here and try it yourself. This will forever be the meal I will crave for years to come. read more

We come to Detroit once or twice a year for Lions games from Florida, and a good friend pointed us to Olin. What an incredible recommendation! Came to Olin yesterday for my birthday. The restaurant is open, modern and comfortable. We were sat in a booth which was huge, could have easier sat 6-8 people. We ordered drinks and apps. We got the don't touch mai drink, and the strawberry margarita. Both were very tasty. For apps we ordered the house made foccocia bread, mushroom pate, smoked whitefish dip, grilled bok choy, and the potato / artichoke app. The pate, fish dip, bread and potatoes were great! All had great flavor. The bok choy was bleh, didn't really have any flavor. Wouldn't recommend that, and I love bok choy. For entrees we got the burger and shrimp pasta. Burger was good, and had good flavor. The fries were confusing. They were COVERED in something white. Looked like either salt or Parmesan cheese but when you ate one it tasted like nothing was on it. Very strange, but I think it was parm that had no flavor. The pasta wasn't great, there was barely any sauce on it and the sauce that was in there had little to no flavor. We got creme brûlée for dessert which was amazing. Overall service, drinks, apps and the restaurant itself is great. Entrees we got were kind of lack luster. My group and I have tried most things here. For appetizers the meatballs and the fish dip are the superior winners. For main dishes, you can't go wrong with the swordfish, burger, or shrimp pasta. Swordfish was the best anyone has ever had, but it's needs something with it. It's a very small portion on a huge plate. Service is always great and friendly. Place is always clean. Only down side is the prices and portions of things. The price of their steak is laughable for a strip. Their "cheese board" is 3 little things of cheese. Skip it. There are other things as well. If they upped their plate portions with something, and lowered their prices by about 15-30% on some things, it's an easy 5 star. read more

A nice modern ambiance that still has some old styles to it including artwork. Open kitchen concept where you can see the prep work for your meal. Our table had the prime rib burgers and steak and frites. The burger was one of the best tasting burgers I have had in a long time and the steak was so tender!! Service was great, and although Olin has pricier items the portion sizes you get match the value. I've walked by this restaurant many times but rarely noted its name. So, when we made brunch plans, I had no idea where I was headed, despite being very familiar with the area. Before heading out, I had already checked out the "sample" menu and was impressed by the limited but different offerings: fried paella rice, shakshuka, and chorizo-wrapped dates in curry. The restaurant is beautiful, with intimate booth seating, old-fashioned leather love seats, cool tile work and lighting, and an eye-catching mural at the back. We nabbed a wonderful table, although I don't think there is a bad one in the entire restaurant. One of my friends dropped out due to a family emergency and while we both missed her, we took advantage of the time to really catch up. My friend was interested in the French Toast with cinnamon apples while I went with the short-rib burger. I thought it was going to be short ribs piled onto a bun instead of a patty made with short ribs - my mistake. It was delicious nonetheless, smashed, juicy and flavorful. The table next to ours ordered much of the menu and everything looked wonderful. I might come back for brunch but will definitely return for dinner - that menu looked too interesting to pass up. I'm always excited about a new place! Found Olin on Yelp when I was looking for a pre-show dinner option. I made reservations online... super easy! There were available tables and space at the bar, but since it was a Saturday night... better to be safe! We were seated an an intimate table for two. We started off with cocktails - I got the tequila spritz. The bar special of the night. So yummy! We started of with the Waygu beef tartare with homemade salt and vinegar chips. OMG! Tastebud explosion. I could eat a bag of those chips! For dinner, my husband got the Waygu steak special and I got the striped bass. The Waygu was my favorite. Hands down! The striped bass was good. I prefer the fish to be a little more cooked, but overall the place was great. We didn't have room, but I saw someone else get the flourless cake. I had to try it! The flourless chocolate cake had a s'mores twist with a graham cracker and marshmallow. Worth it! Great food and vibe! read more

A Disappointing Return to a Meaningful Place Today was my birthday, and my wife and I decided to revisit the restaurant where we first met. We were genuinely excited and brought our family of five to share the experience. Unfortunately, what should have been a special moment turned into one of the more disappointing dining experiences we've had in a long time. Our reservation was for 12:15 PM. We were the only guests in the restaurant when we arrived, and by the time we left, there were only two other diners. Given that context--an almost empty dining room--this experience should have been smooth, attentive, and dialed in. It was not. The tone was off immediately. The hostess was uninviting and disengaged, which set the mood from the start. Our server mentioned they had just returned from being closed for four days due to the holiday and were "getting back into the swing of things." While I can appreciate honesty, that's not something a guest should feel the impact of. We ordered two coffees--both arrived ice cold. The server seemed puzzled and brewed a new pot. Fine, things happen. The food, however, is where the experience really fell apart. I ordered a Mediterranean bowl. My daughter ordered a salmon dish with corn and beans. My wife ordered the crab sandwich, and my mother had a different salmon dish. My wife and mother both said their meals were "okay"--not memorable, not bad, just fine. My daughter's salmon dish arrived cold. When we asked if it was meant to be served that way, the server admitted he didn't know. He never followed up with an answer, and we ultimately sent it back without reordering. My Mediterranean bowl was genuinely underwhelming--basic, not fresh-tasting, barely warm, and frankly surprising to see leave the kitchen at all. It was the kind of dish that makes you pause and think, How did this pass the line? I also ordered minestrone soup and clearly stated that I'm vegan. It arrived topped with melted cheese. It was sent back. Cleanliness was another major concern. We had wipes with us for our two-year-old and were shocked at how dirty the table was when we wiped it down--especially given that we were among the first guests of the day. There's simply no excuse for that. My wife then went to the restroom and came back visibly uncomfortable, saying it was absolutely filthy. Again, no prior traffic, which suggests it hadn't been properly cleaned before opening. That's unacceptable. The kitchen staff appeared disengaged, the server lacked familiarity with the menu, and overall it felt like no one was fully present or taking pride in the experience being delivered. Olin has a prime location in a great city and a reputation that should demand better than this. Off days happen--but there are some days that simply shouldn't. Especially not when the restaurant is nearly empty and especially not when guests are celebrating something meaningful. This experience was deeply disappointing, and based on today, I wouldn't return or recommend it to others. I truly hope this was an anomaly--but it was a miss across too many fronts to ignore. read more

Note for context: No response was received via email or the website contact form. A voicemail was also left, and a separate email was sent directly to General Manager Adrian Morgan, giving him the opportunity to address these concerns before this review was submitted. Prior to our visit, I sent three separate emails on April 27th, April 29th, and April 30th, each inquiring about ways to make the evening special in honor of my husband's birthday. Not one of those emails received a reply. When we arrived and were seated, the evening deteriorated quickly. My meal was brought out incorrectly, and despite the dining room being only about a quarter full, it took nearly fifteen minutes to receive the corrected dish. In the meantime, my husband ate his birthday dinner alone. When my meal did arrive, the chicken was noticeably undercooked, and the whipped blue cheese I had requested be omitted was again included. The balsamic dressing had been applied so heavily the dish was nearly inedible and, notably, it was not listed anywhere on the menu, making its presence both unexpected and unexplained. Out of respect for my husband and the occasion, I did not escalate the situation at the table. I asked for a box and we left quietly. At no point did anyone from the team acknowledge the delays or the errors, or offer any gesture of goodwill beyond a brief "your food will be out shortly." As a fellow business owner, I was genuinely disheartened. A simple response to my emails would have been an act of basic courtesy, and it was never extended. Exceptional evenings require more than good food. They require attentiveness, accountability, and care. Unfortunately, none of those were present that night. Future celebrations will be entrusted to other restaurants in the area, where even when a meal falls short, the service and hospitality rise to meet the moment. read more

Made a resy reservation at 4 pm for a 5:15 pm table on 12/23. Because we couldn't get there in time we had to cancel less than 30 minutes later We were assessed a $75 cancellation charge - immediately called the restaurant and they said they would check with the owner about waiving the charge. We also said we could come later that night if available. After no return call and then a number of phone calls we finally reached a manager almost 2 weeks later who was super rude and could care less about the charge or the circumstances. From the same owners of the fabulous Highlands in the Renaissance Center, Olin is one of the best restaurants in downtown Detroit for a sophisticated ambiance and delicious food. My friends and I arrived shortly after Olin opened at 5:00 pm and got a comfortable booth ahead of the after-work crowd. I love the interior decor and how it feels elegant but not stuffy. My entire dining experience was fantastic, from the drinks to the appetizers, soups, and entrees. I recommend the House Made Focaccia with honey butter and the Wild Mushroom Soup. I love when simple dishes surprise you with complex flavors from quality ingredients. And who doesn't love Crispy Pork Belly? I was just happy that it was on the menu and it was well cooked. I liked the food so much that I ordered the Eagle Creek Trout to take to my mom, and she also liked that it was a simple but well-made dish with fresh fish and seasoning like celery, fennel, and cumin-spiced dukkah. I've been to Olin a few times. Always a good experience. I was there on Saturday night for my birthday. The server, Chandler was lovely. She was slammed and doing her best. The kitchen didn't make her job easy. (as someone that's worked in restaurants, I understand) While the food tasted good, there were mistakes and shortcomings I can't overlook. I ordered the lobster main dish to split with my friend. There was ONE singular chunk of lobster meat in the entire dish. This would have disappointing enough if I was eating the dish solo....but one lump of lobster to share is diabolical. It also seemed that the server wasn't made aware that the reservation was for my birthday and celebrating being done with cancer treatment.
