I picked the spot for my bday dinner w my bf, dad and his SO. I was really looking forward to it. I think we all had the ambiance of Asaggi in our minds, and found the new decor to be unsettlingly spare, through I loved the wood-wrapped poles. My 95 yo dad was obsessed with the roughly "sculpted" support beam by the window with some lovely exposed brick and odd sharp, jutting black pieces - I'm not sure what - possibly remaining from before, intending to look arty or rustic but we're just odd. It had rained heavily that afternoon so the patio was not set up, but it has also been stripped of all warmth and charm, even if the umbrellas were up. Hollow and harsh, feeling just like the interior. Our waitress was extremely attentive and since it was my bday, they brought us some sparkling wine in gorgeous flutes. I ordered the persimmon bourbon cocktail which was great. My bf ordered a scotch and it looked like the drink was half gone when it arrived. We mentioned it and the bartender came over and told us it was because the glass was wide and walked away. Very chintzy. He orders Scotch everywhere we go, and have never seen such a pathetic excuse for a pour. I had the maitake tempura app which was great with a zhug dipping sauce. Very nice-sized portion. The others ordered the "deconstructed" salad with nectarine, plum and some cheese. I really really wish the chefs would stop with this "deconstructed" thing. It is always 100% unsatisfying to the eater. When asking for a "salad", one doesn't want some random things scattered on a large plate. There was nothing more than what might be called a small garnish of greens, a few slices of fruit (which were ripe and delicious) on there and it seems to be just an excuse to serve a micro portion make it sound fancy. My bf had the gnocchi, which he said he liked, the SO had some beef - I didn't pay attention to what, which she said was great and very tender, with a large portion of fries. Dad had the scallops which looked great. I had the cod which was excellent as was the sauce it was in, but the vegetable accompaniment was colorless (not a great thing when the sauce is a dull creamy color) and tasted awful - very faded turnip or something...? We ordered the dessert called "Rocky Road" and the waitress explained it was another "deconstructed" item with no ice cream. There were some cute, homemade toasted marshmallow dots, some nuts and I guess some Valrhona chocolate spread around a dish that was waaaay too big for the sparsely scattered contents. Again, 100% unsatisfying. There was an ice cream sandwich option that came with 2 chocolate chip cookies, which seemed excessive and an odd pairing. When we asked if we could just have the ice cream sandwich with the Valrhona chocolate, the answer was basically that she'd have to ask the pastry chef if that's possible but the cookies were going to be there as well. Weird and unsatisfying to tell someone who loves ice cream that it can't be done. They finished off with some incredibly delicious little chocolates - not sure if it was due to the bday. So, all in all, a very uneven experience I'm not eager to repeat. read more

We were excited to try this restaurant as we had been fans of the one it replaced. This is what we loved: Location, parking, staff (especially our server and the sommelier, were excellent!) We loved the desert, especially the rhubarb tart; delicious and beautifully presented. Hats off to the pastry chef. We loved management because they listened when we told them they fell short on the steak (it was more rare than medium and it was also cold when served. We loved the mussels, homemade bread and specialty butters, tempura mushrooms. This is where we believe improvements can be made: The martini is the smallest martini I have ever seen...emphasis on "tini", although it was delicious. The serving of the gnocchi was sized for a "small plate" but priced as dinner. Let me emphasize how much we enjoyed the ambience, the service (they pampered us). Lots of potential here and so we will come again. read more

Tried Coeur recently, and had - for the most part - a very positive experience. The ambiance was nice - the light and lovely decor was an upgrade from the place's previous incarnation as Assagi Bistro. As for service: our server was very attentive and friendly. The problem that occurred was with the ordering system. Between the time our party placed our orders and the arrival of the food, about 45 minutes passed. Our server explained that there had been some glitch in the computer system. We can only hope that this issue is corrected soon. To satisfy our growing hunger, we ordered the house country bread with butter ($7, for an item that many restaurants offer at no charge. Oh well.) On to our entrees. The co- diner got the chicken roulade, which he greatly enjoyed. The remaining 3 members of our party got the short rib, which was very nice. Due to the unduly long wait for our food, the establishment comped us for 3 desserts, which we enjoyed. One was a mille-feuille, another was madeleines with chocolate to dip them in, and a panna cotta with meringue discs. Very nice. Wine selections were quite good, with a large number available by the glass. All in all, we enjoyed our evening at Coeur, and would be happy to repeat the experience, assuming the service wait time could be shortened. read more

We had high expectations for Coeur but left slightly disappointed. Nothing was terrible. Nothing was memorable. That was the problem. We started with drinks. The cocktail menu was good (including non-alcoholic), but they only have three beers and one is Miller and one is Modelo so nothing special. We then ordered the bread which cost $7. It comes with two butters-one was good, the other was a miss. The bread itself was just sourdough. If you are going to charge for bread, it should be something special-not something you can easily buy at any local bakery. We then had the delicata squash and the skate which was served like fish & chips. Both were fine, but neither were excellent and the fish was overcooked. For our entrees we ordered the steak frites and the Icelandic cod. The steak was flavorful but slightly tough. The cod was a very small portion and was served with corona beans in a tomato-based sauce. The combination didn't work well but the fish was cooked perfectly. Overall everything was fine, but we thought it was over-priced compared to many of the other newer restaurants which have opened in the Detroit area during the past few years. Our meal was about $100/person including tip. Coeur can't compare to many of the restaurants downtown, but we are glad we tried it. read more

We recently went for our anniversary dinner. The space has a nice modern vibe with good energy. After being seated we were promptly greeted by our waitress who went over the menu and poured us water. We decided to try the chefs menu with the wine pairing. We were so happy we did! The dishes were surprisingly and absolutely delicious! Each drink was also provided a table side explanation. We were so happy with the food that we decided to order a couple more dishes from the main menu! Our top two favorite dishes were the braised lamb shoulder with crispy chickpeas and the gnocchi with spring morels! Can't wait to go back! read more

My partner and I celebrated her birthday at Coeur, and it was exceptional. The Pom Fresca mocktail was refreshing, balanced, and fairly priced. For main, I chose the chicken roulade. It was hearty, in perfect alignment with the name of the restaurant. My partner ordered the short rib. The piece I tried was tender and flavorful. Plating was unique yet not overly ornate, allowing the dishes to shine. Further, the ceramic dinnerware struck a perfect balance between sophistication and earthiness. What truly set Coeur apart was the outstanding service; they went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. Big thank you to the pastry chef Carla. The French fries were greasy and the hanger steak stringy with a strange aftertaste. The bread included 4 slices of white bread with 2 kinds of flavored butter ($7.00). Had an amazing experience doing a 5 course tasting. They were extremely accommodating for my food allergies and consulted with the chef to make sure I'd be able to eat everything on the menu, since we were not able to preview the menu in advance. Celebrated my son's birthday at Coeur. Wonderful relatively new addition to Ferndale dining. Decided not to get the tasting menu so we could try more dishes, especially appetizers. Loved the potato croquettes and mushroom tempura. The only misses were beef tartare and bone marrow (so I was told since I don't eat those). We had the lamb burger, chicken roulade, squash and short ribs for mains. All very good. The giant macaroon dessert tasted as good as it looked. Will be back to sit on the patio in the good weather. read more

Coeur - French Near Me - Ferndale, Michigan

For the tier Coeur is aiming to be in, 5 stars may not be entirely accurate, but I'm very much much rooting for this place and have to say they're still a cut above most everything else in Ferndale while still being fairly priced for what's offered. I've been to Coeur a few times now. The service is lovely. For the price you really won't find a better a brunch anywhere. While the tasting menu has been generally excellent the couple times I've had it, there has been some courses that felt a bit too thin (4 pieces of asparagus being a good example, though they were cooked beautifully.) Generally, most of the tastings have been a great adventure. With just some minor shortcomings, Coeur has served me the absolute best lamb chops I've ever had in my life as well as the single best dessert I think I've ever tried... And it was a cupcake. There's a lot of amazing desserts around here. The baked Alaska at Selden. The chocolate pot de la creme at La Supreme. Whatever Mabel Grey is doing for the day. This rhubarb lime zest mascarpone cupcake I was only served due to my nut allergy really topped everything... It was otherworldly. I looked up the pastry chef and really can't wait for the day that she's opening up a bakery of her own. Even the little yuzu gummy they give at the end of tastings is impressive. I love Coeur and hope to see it start filling up for Saturday brunch because it really deserves way more attention than it's been getting! read more

Visiting my hometown area over a recent weekend, I was pleased to dine with a longtime friend at a relatively new spot, Coeur on 9 Mile in Ferndale. A fresh, modern, upscale but not stuffy renovated establishment provided my friend and I one of the most "Delicious" meals we have experienced. Chef Jordan and the Coeur team have created a "go to" place for a casual wine and dine experience in a warm inviting space. The menu is a delightful journey of local and fresh with a hint of international. They feature daily in-house baked bread and flavored butters. A simple menu of small plates for appetizers and large plates for entrees. Uncertain on what items to order our server, Kathy guided me through the selections, helping me pick a melon & cucumber salad and the scallops entree. Bread, appetizer and entrée in a word "Delicious". Coeur already has a reputation as a wine place. Neither my friend nor I are aficionados, so Kathy introduced us to Sommelier Sean. Between the two of them they guided us to a Michigan Risling (who thought). They promised us it would be dry and not sweet. Once again, "Delicious". Neither of us are desert guys, but with some gentle coaching by assistant server, Iris we were guided to a Blueberry and Meyer Lemon Posset which looked like a work of art and tasted "Delicious". Nice touch department: even on a busy Saturday evening, Chef Jordan checked-in several times. Coeur is the total package for a wine and dine experience. Everyone was very nice, went on a Thursday night and it was almost empty. Good wine selection. Could have just been what I ordered but the small plates were not that exciting. The croquettes were a little bland and I did not personally enjoy the sauce on the side, the Caesar salad was good but could have used a little more flavor. Also fairly expensive for what you get. Overall a generally nice experience - next time I'd probably try to order other things. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the whole dining experience in this wonderful new spot in Ferndale. There are plenty of delicious options in both the appetizer and entree sections, as well as a nice selection of drinks (both alcoholic and non). The sourdough bread with whipped peach butter, and the tempura shitake mushrooms apps were especially great! The wine selection was also very nice with plenty of good and reasonably priced choices. One of the things that we REALLY appreciated was the noise level. The music and overall level was enough to make it feel lively yet it was also low enough so you could actually have a conversation with your dinner partner without having to yell or lean way over the table. It's been almost 24 hours since I ate the brisket hash for brunch and I can't stop thinking about it. The only problem with the dish is that it came with two perfectly poached eggs and not six. I almost took a picture of it, but didn't want to waste any time before diving into this beautiful plate of lusciousness. We drove from Howell to eat here. It was well worth the drive. Katie was our waitress she did an amazing job. The ambiance and music they played was perfect. The food and service were amazing. We had the smash burger with fries and the ham on sourdough (it was a much more fancy name with fancy ingredients. (Croque Madame). Both were spectacular. They also had a homemade catsup and hot pepper sauce. Both were also fantastic. We were there for weekend brunch and they have a specific brunch menu. We are looking forward to coming back for the dinner menu. Definitely coming back here. read more

Walked in, pleasantly surprised that they did not have a patio wait during the funky Ferndale art fest. Got seated right away. Host was very nice. He's why I'll give 1 star. Good experience stopped there. Waited over 30 minutes, server never came to the table. No water, no hi or hello. Nothing. Finally got up and approached a server who I had seen waiting on other patio tables, told him politely that I just wanted to make sure he knew we were there since we were sat in the very back. He said he would get to us in a minute. I apologized... lol.. and asked if he was alone. Said he was one of two servers. Went back to my table. Waited another 10 minutes. Nothing. So we got up and left. It's a shame because we had picked out an $85 bottle of wine and 3 menu items to order totaling over $100 in food. Not to mention the table next to us was served their food without plates, and when I asked them how the food was they replied "not good". Won't be going back, which sucks since we live in the neighborhood. Disappointed. read more

Love the vibe of this place. The menu is brief but absolutely delicious, with a selection of small plates to share and several large entree options. The Potato & Comte Croquettes were perfectly crunchy on the outside and unbelievably smooth and soft and pillowy on the inside. Ordered a steak entree and it was cooked exactly right and very tasty. Lovely addition to the Ferndale scene! We were super aficionados of the previous restaurant for 20+ years and just had to see what had become of the space. We went in with heavy hearts, thinking that no restaurant could ever replace our beloved Assaggi, but Coeur exceeded our expectations. Nice modern, spare decor with beautifully presented menus and wine list. Good background music, nice atmosphere, easy conversation at the bar and at the table. We skipped the bread and had apps and entrees, along with wine and a lemony cocktail that was beautiful and delicious. Everything was nicely portioned and presented and the service was pleasant and unobtrusive. Our kids (voracious teens and college students home for break) went for mussels, lamb burger, potato croquettes, and steak (a perfect medium rare as requested) and the adults had the kale salad (panzanella - fantastic), pork shank, and cod. Nice wine selection by the glass and reasonable offerings on the wine list. We were wowed by the old school timer on the French press for after-dinner coffee and finished with a shared fluffy cranberry/orange concoction that everyone tried and loved. We were at Coeur for a family dinner, but the atmosphere and nice not-too-loud vibe make this a great space for date night or a business outing -- no need to shout across the table. It will probably be a bit before the comparison banter tapers off, but we were impressed with Coeur and will definitely go back. Can't wait to see what becomes of the patio space. read more

Pound for pound the best restaurant I have been to in the greater metro Detroit area! I had my valentine's day dinner here and it blew my expectations out of the water. First, our server Katie was fantastic, she knew everything on the menu and guided us in every correct direction when we were torn between our options. We started with the bread, skate cheeks, and beef tartare. The bread had two wonderful butters (sumac & chive)... the sumac butter was out of this world. The skate cheeks had a wonderful dusting of seasoning on them and the tartar sauce was amazing... not overly pungent. The beef tartare was super high quality and I loved the creme fraiche to balance the steak. For our entrees, we had the lamb burger and short rib. The lamb burger had a rich onion jam and the burger was still juicy even though it was order medium well. The short ribs were to die for and the trumpet mushroom was cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the orange ice cream/sorbet, as someone who is not a dessert person this blew my mind. I can keep going on and on... but this restaurant truly should be on anyone's radar who is looking for a great restaurant in the Detroit area... I will be recommending to everyone read more
