Came here for my birthday dinner and it was absolutely incredible! We got the burgers and they were so juicy I was full after but not stuffed it was the perfect size! I got the pear drink this time and it was unique it was delicious and bubbly with the blanc de blanc in it but if it's your first time I highly recommend the pickle martini. We sat at the chefs counter and it was so beautiful to watch them cook and to see all the vibrant fruit and vegetables it was such a cute venue and the staff was super friendly and attentive without being overbearing! SO AMAZING everything was so delicious and non pretentious. Ordered the tomatoes, sourdough, sugared plums, and sour cream mashed potatoes to start (for 4 people). The mashed potatoes with mushrooms were probably the best thing I've eaten in months. We all loved it. Then entrees we shared the kielbasa and the duck leg and both were incredible, the duck was so tender and the cabbage and corn with the kielbasa was so flavorful. Amazing food, drink, and service that slaps. A group of us went to dinner there last weekend and I can't say enough good things. First, they accommodated a surly group of 40 year olds (that was our group) finding us seating so that we could be close to one another. They didn't need to but they did. I apologize to other patrons - we hadn't been away from wives and children for awhile - we were loud. The drinks hit the spot as I went with a beet cocktail that was delicious and a local beer after that that was recommended by the waiter - it was a good recommendation. Our group ordered the whole menu or at least it felt like it. Everything I would eat again and again. Just awesome - highlights included the toasted sour dough - I know my dough and this rocked, kielbasa with cabbage.... Yea boiiiiii, polish nachos that were one of my favorites, fried chicken which I think was a special - it had a caraway chili crust that set it off, a beet salad to make me feel healthy and cut through the richness. Sometimes beets can be one note, but not these, I could have made it a meal but no - we were on a bender. Lastly the burger. My god. The burger. Arguably one of the best burgers I've had in memory. It was like a patty melt on steroids. Lastly, we ordered desserts - I ate some much that I was uncomfortable but I had a spoon of the mousse and then a couple more. I've been wanting to try this spot for so long and here I am!!! It's nice to have a few days off to get around and try things. Roses is an adorable little diner-ish restaurant off Jefferson in Detroit. From the outside, one might simply pass it by....but oh, that would be such a huge mistake. Walking in the door, I was greeted by a friendly group of patrons and staff. It was quite busy inside the diner and carry out orders. There is very limited seating and a few bar seats. They have opened up a wine shop which takes up some space. They have such a unique selection of hard to find wines. I would most certainly grab a bottle or two just because...it's a must! I was excited to see Diego working. He has such a wide span of knowledge in wines and the overall industry. Every time I bump into him, I learn something new. Based on recommendations, I ordered a Smoked Gouda and Bacon Panini and French Onion Soup. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was an amazing lunch. One of my most favorite things is Whitefish and they have a special Whitefish Panini but it sells out quickly. I will most certainly be back for that. Lol It was getting late and i needed to leave, even though Diego kept me happy and my glass full, but I was meeting up with a friend. Before heading out the door, I grabbed two bottles of wine and a homemade Raspberry Pop Tart for a special treat. My biggest reason for skipping a Rose's brunch pre-pandemic was usually because I didn't want to wait for a table. Usually it's not a big deal, but sometimes you just need eggs and toast as fast as physically possible lest you deep dive into A Mood. Now that we're months into Pandemic Times, I will admit that I've increased my Rose's frequency probably 300%. Sure, you don't get the houseplant chill vibes or the late morning light streaming across tables adorned with gorgeous ceramic blue mugs filled to the brim with piping hot Populace coffee - but you do get the same exceptional food and you get it SO FAST! Their curbside pickup has never let me down. Of course I would absolutely prefer to dine in, but until then, I'm all about the takeout breakkie. Our neighbors next to us used plastic wares for their meal here, good idea. It's small and very drafty here, no matter where you sit. Kept our coats on during our late brunch. The blueberry pancakes ($12.50 bare) are okay, a bit rubbery consistency to me, nice the blueberries are inside the batter. The addition of fruit or bacon to the pancakes was $3. The staff's favorite is decent, it had some tender chewiness from the al dente black rice, slight kick from the kimchi, creamy from the avocado. The chicken sausage is okay. The spicy sauce adds a bit more flavor and heat to it. The chicken sausage added was an additional $5, probably would have been good to tell me that when I ordered it, since the added bacon is only an additional$3.50. I have noticed they did not wipe down the tables between guests or the menus either on either side of me. One waitress did a quick swish with her dirty rag and no spray on the table to my right. I never did get the side salad, but was charged for it, never recalled that a salad wasn't ever brought to me either. They have suggested tips on the receipt, even though the menu states they are a fair wage restaurant. We sat at the bar right before the lunch rush. Ordered and watched our food made with care. Everything was so yum and can I say, I love the business model. 1. Need water? This diner is absolutely bustling, and bursting at the seams. Theres a table a couple of feet in front of you immediately as you walk in, and I'm not sure why as its blocking traffic and a fire hazard, but nonetheless, I have chosen to give this establishment a 4.5 star review (let's round up, shall we?) The waitresses were prompt and gave menus and took orders in a fast manner, although our food took quite a bit of time to come out since there was only one man cooking at the time that I saw. I can see why many people are willing to pay top dollar for the high quality ingredients, although the egg and cheese on biscuit I ordered for my toddlers wasn't even edible with the amount of salt that was on there (believe me, I tried). I did enjoy my savory poached eggs with roasted potatoes and was glad I was able to balance the flavors with honey ricotta toast. The bathroom is dark, but not too small, so no points off, but an extra light would be very helpful. All in all, I'm glad I tried the place for the experience but personally wouldn't go here again as it wasn't my cup of tea. Oh my Rose, you definitely have a new fan over here. It was my first trip to Detroit, let alone Michigan, and I'll be thinking of you. We decided to grab lunch here and I loved the intimacy and schematics of this diner. This spot is very quaint and host a handful of tables and a long dining counter. You're honestly going to already be salivating once you open the door, because they have a smoker smack dab in the parking lot for their meats. (Also loved the personal touch of the grill with Rose on top) It's an open seating type of place so you can grab any table. We were a party of three so it was quite easy to find one. Our waiter was very polite and kind, and the only note was just forgetting a few things for the table but nothing that would've impacted my view. They actually make their own bread and YOU MUST pair it with the cherry jam that's on the table. It is so dang good that you'll contemplate taking the jar with you and make a run for it. I wanted a lighter lunch and was very happy with their focus on fresh produce, greens, and vegetables. If you're trying to be mindful of your eating then you've found the right spot! After much contemplation, I went with their chicken broth which was flavored beautifully and had fresh spinach and other tidbits. I was even able to add chicken for some protein and it was genius of them to have done shredded which marinated nicely within the broth. (Pleasant surprise as most places will just simply give you a marinated chicken breast) Now for all you foodies/social media junkies... THIS PLACE IS GREAT FOR THOSE PHOTO OPS. Nobody wants to buy a business that continuously loses money. It's a very tough business to begin with, but this business model of very high wages to server help was doomed from the start. No one has ever succeeded in business by overpaying their employees. The girls were more interested in making a social statement. And it cost them the business. Before they launch their next business, if they ever do, I strongly suggest they take a year off and immediately enroll in accounting, finance and economic courses to master the fundamentals of business. Pancakes please! Pancakes please! I could eat these all day, they are so good. I have no idea how they make them to be so flavorful, but they do. I don't think it is made with traditional ingredients. It has a slightly different flavor and that's what makes them so good. I should also mention they are so fluffy and soft. The flavor stands on its own, I didn't even need to use any syrup. I loved the egg breakfast sandwich. The bread on the sandwich is so good and fresh. The fresh greens help to elevate the sandwich. They do an excellent job in putting this together. The let down were the grits. I really love grits and these were ok, not my favorite. Here's the thing, it's not bad, I prefer smooth and creamy grits. Whereas these are grainier in texture and I think they use some different ingredients, so the flavor was unusual. I went to Rose's today for a friend's birthday! It had been highly, highly recommended so we went in for a visit. On first look, the location is sort of detached from other businesses and is in between Grosse Pointe Park and Downtown on Jefferson. It has a gravel lot you can park in. The inside is very homey and you're greeted by a little display of pastries you can ask for. It has a rustic/hipster vibe that excels in some ways but not in others. The decoration is very nice with a little flower and vase at each table. However, the cutlery is all mismatched and looks old and scuffed up, as do the glasses. I wasn't too keen on this because who ever wants to wonder how clean the utensils they're putting in their mouth are? I ordered the Broth Bowl and was not pleased. The broth is okay, nothing spectacular but the bowl had little besides that, a few sliced carrots, a mountain of kale or some other greens, and two poached eggs. The eggs were poached perfectly but there was absolutely nothing else remarkable about the dish. I asked for a biscuit on the side, which was fine but plain. In retrospect, I should've used some of the jellies they had set out on the table. My friend got the New Staff Favorite and was super pleased with it and very surprised by how flavorful it was! That may be something to try if you're there. Overall, my experience was subpar and I probably won't head back. As soon as I walk in I feel like I'm in my grandma's kitchen with lace doilies hanging from the windows, but it's like grandma's kitchen meets old school diner which I really loved. The wait wasn't very long as they were close to closing on a Sunday mid afternoon. The waitress was bubbly and inviting. The menu wasn't very extensive and they also had a few specials written on the board, but with the quality of their food they didn't need very many options. I decided to go with the pesto fiesta bowl because the description was interesting and sounded pretty delicious with pesto rice, sautéed greens, tomato salad, labneh, topped with 2 fried eggs. The flavors in this bowl are amazing and meld very well together! The creaminess from the egg and labneh, and the greens were sautéed and seasoned perfectly, and you absolutely can never go wrong with pesto! I could taste a slight squeeze of lemon which really brightened the dish and made it so light and summery, I could literally eat this every single day and be super satisfied! After driving by this place so many times it was nice to finally try it out. My SO has been before but never trying to get vegan options. We checked with a few people that confirmed there were options, so we grabbed friends and went. A 4-top was a 20 minute wait...and it was exactly 20 minutes (great job estimating!). We got a table right next to the door - OK, almost every seat is right next to the door since this place is so small. The issue with that is just how cold it was every time the door opened. Many people ate wearing a jacket. The interior is simple yet welcoming. The menu, like Rose's, is tiny. Everyone managed to order different things still, and here's what I thought about my food: Coffee (11/10): No non-dairy creamer, but this coffee is so good I added some sugar and loved it! 5 small cups later I had to ask who makes this delicious drip. Not only did the server tell me it was Populace Coffee, a Michigan company, but they sell the bags of whole bean coffee right there! See my photos for the wonderful design, get your butt there for the wonderful taste. Side of avocado (7/10): Fresh and tasty. However, you only get half of an avocado, and it was very cold, making the pieces a bit harder than desired. Side of potatoes (7/10): Fresh cut, large cubes. They were cooked but could've used a bit more crisp - maybe thinner cuts. Added hot sauce to bring some flavor and it worked out just fine. Side of greens (8/10): I love kale. They added in some onions and oil to make this bowl really tasty. Taste was fresh, perfect for a cold afternoon. Mushroom sandwich (6/10): The prep was fine, but these were mushrooms that looked like they just got pulled from out back. Seriously, bunches of stems adorned the bread. The au jus sauce helped, but the aesthetic and flavor were too overwhelming for my taste. Bright spot was that toast. WOW, it was awesome. Ended up throwing on some of the blueberry jam/compote they offer and just eating the bread as a toast/jelly combo. Coconut crunch cake (8/10): Crispy on the edges and soft in the middle. Full of flavor that isn't overbearing. I thought this was very well executed Service (10/10): Knowledgeable, friendly, attentive My issue might just be the cost. Now, I'm not above paying higher prices to eat at a restaurant, but nothing on the menu blew me away, and the portions left quite a bit to be desired when you factor in price. It's a small shop so maybe they need to turn more profit per customer, but I would say the criticism of pricing is valid given the portions received. Would I go again? Yep. Quite small establishment. Really friendly staff. Very good food. These three descriptors sums up our experience at Rose's Fine Food well. The unassuming exterior does not indicate the experience you will have once you enter the interior. Inside reminds you of a mix between new and old. Love the old time diner feel of the counter and food prep right in front of you. And the small tables and decor give you a home type feeling in a public setting. Although the space is small, the tables are well placed maximizing the space available. All the staff we interacted with were extremely friendly and quite attentive. I drink a lot of coffee fast and my cup never stayed empty. My really enjoyed the New Staff Favorite. And I can definitely recommend Grandpa Richard's Pancakes. They are quite thick and filling. Rose's has sooooo much potential and I desperately wanted to like it but there are some issues that will probably prevent me from returning unless they are corrected. :( As a previous reviewer noted, they seem to have a fly and bee problem. We were buzzed by several while sitting at the counter a few feet away from the food prep area. What was truly disconcerting was that the baked goods are sitting out on elevated cake plates with no dome or plastic covering. I saw a fly lit on the donuts at least twice. Can't say I blame it but it left me feeling kind of queasy and not really wanting to eat the donuts which I had heard so much about. The coffee is strong (good!) but every cup I had was lukewarm bordering on cold (bad!) My co-diner did not like her iced tea. She says it was very bitter and didn't taste fresh and we both noted it was very cloudy in appearance. I am kind of a stickler on coffee being hot and iced tea being made from scratch and not a mix. They said it wasn't made from a mix bit there was definitely something funky about it. Maybe it was from the day before? The food wasn't bad but took quite a while do be made. And this was midday on a weekday. The grits were very soupy, I had to eat them with a spoon. The side of veggies my co-diner got was barely cooked Swiss chard. It was not edible. The egg of the day sandwich was tasty but the waitress didn't follow my request to leave off the bacon. I picked it off myself. She did apologize profusely and offered us a complimentary baked good (which was hard to get excited about because of the flies and lack of cover.) The service was great, our wait person was super nice and attentive. The menu says they are using local ingredients whenever possible but they don't specify either on the menu or anywhere in the restaurant (like on a chalkboard) what those might be. I did see Vernors in the refrigerated case, points for that. I'd love up know what else they are using that's not from a food service company. I am hopeful the owners take my criticism in the spirit in which it is given, which is constructive. It's great to have a NY Times piece written about you, but once you get the customers in the seats, you've got to give them a reason to want to return. read more

Delicious brunch, drinks and cute ambiance! This was my first time coming to Roses's Fine Food and I went with two foodie's, which makes the experience even more fun. We went on a Saturday and did have to wait about 15 minutes for a table to become avialable. Upon entering the first words i thought were: "hipster" "dive" "but trendy". It's a very small space with a few tables lined along one side wall, then the counter with stools with the kitchen/grill top. The tables are rustic wood (perfect for a food photo backdrop!) and the place has a lot of light. We each ordered a "hot milk" as our drink. One of my friends got the turmeric which was a bright yellow and smelled incredible. The other friend got the smoked maple and vanilla and I got hazelnut. Mine was delicious! It took a little while to make, but i later learned they hand froth each of the drinks, which is cool. To start the three of us split two of their famous Crybaby donuts. OMG. These were so rich, doughy and incredibly flavorful. We got one blood orange and one chocolate date. We couldn't finish them, but they were still tasty. The menu was pretty extensive and vegetarian-friendly (a reason I wanted t come here) and we each got different things. I opted for the #Chickpea hash which was like a chickpea stew and then topped with two poached eggs and a basil creme fresh. It was a LOT of food, but it tasted so good. Almost like a channa masala with North African and Indian flavors and the eggs were cooked perfectly. We had great service from the staff and the food didn't take long to arrive. They're friendly and chatty, and there's a really good vibe here. It feels like the Detroit I know and love. I ordered the lamb burger, which was well-seasoned and cooked perfectly, on a homemade bun with this yummy yogurt/feta/greek olive sauce. Delish. I must admit, I ate it rather quickly. As I was sitting at the bar waiting to cash out, I noticed one of the managers make herself a bowl of their house potatoes with this bright green, yummy looking sauce. I asked her what it was, and she said, "green dude" sauce, kind of like a chimichuri with little dill pickles in it. Pickles? I love anything with pickles, and it didn't look oily like other chimichuris I'd seen. "Would you like to try it?" she asked. Uh...yeah! It was herby and savory with bits of pickle...totally unique and delicious. I will definitely be ordering the Green Dude for breakfast next time! I've been looking for a really good breakfast spot for a long time. Well the wait is over!!! I have found my spot!!! Rose's Fine Food is literally the only place I will want to have breakfast in Detroit from now on!!! It's a small spot, so we put our name in and waited in the car for about 10 min and then they called us to say a table was open. The menu had everything I was looking for hearty and healthy breakfast that is high quality in a quaint setting. I also got some greens and a pie (sorry I ate he pie before I could get a picture because it was so good). I have been intending to visit since Rose's opened. A Saturday morning cancellation left me with unanticipated free time, I was already in the area, I was a bit hungry ... a good time to visit Rose's! My first impressions: Small. Functional. Not overly hip (that's a good thing). TEAMWORK - the entire staff rocks. Second impressions: Small menu; and not the typical menu. Not a single omelette on the breakfast menu. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The lunch menu? A couple of interesting chicken choices. One Corridor sausage item. The rest is for vegetarians. I plopped down at the counter. Theresa arrived promptly with a menu and water, wearing her best Halloween kitty-face (make-up). She was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and anticipated my needs. Heck, the entire staff was anticipating my needs. Even the dishwasher ... he noticed that I needed another napkin and procured it before I could even ask. I ordered the Poodle Platter: Two eggs (poached), served over garlicky greens w/spiced, coarsely cubed red skins and thick-sliced toast dressed with ricotta and jam. I asked for the eggs to be scrambled ... and they were perfect. Just a tiny hint of garlic in the garlicky greens. More garlic, please. Guest WiFi? No. Location? It's on Jefferson. Not a horrible location. Nor is it a great location. Pay *attention* to your surroundings. CCW? Not allowed by mgt. Will I return? No. Why? The CCW matter. If you got the money it's worth a try. I have to say the food was tasty. Very fresh. I would give it four stars if it was a bit cheaper. I seem to remember they them saying you don't need to tip because they pay a "living wage". That would explain the high prices. However, when I got my bill there was section for a tip. I know I don't have to leave one, but I felt I had too since there was a spot on the bill. Warning: Lots of hipsters. ;-) read more

Went to Rose's while I was home over the holidays with my mom and my husband. It is so cute inside and the menu is just my size: about 10 items to choose from. I love a place that does that: gives a good variety of options without being too overwhelming. We were seated at the counter which stretches across the entire restaurant, in addition to some of their regular tables. The counter seats were comfortable, which was important because we waited SO LONG to receive our food. Between the three of us we ordered French toast, fried rice, and grilled cheese - all pretty simple dishes to make. However, Rose's only has one small grill and one person working on it, so even with the small restaurant space, it was impossible for him to keep up. The cook couldn't get our order to come out at the same time either. My mom's French toast was done first, got cream and berry sauce added to it, and then it sat for about 10 minutes right in front of us while the other dishes were being prepared. The fried rice was ready next - about 5 minutes behind. My grilled cheese was nowhere in sight (and we had a front row view to the cooking at the counter, so I know this to be true). Behind on my dish, they served my mom's cold French toast (because they don't have a warming lamp) and the fried rice. My grilled cheese and side of avocado was served when my mom had already finished her dish. Last, and probably most disappointingly - they were out of hot sauce. Which kind of doesn't make sense to me since its a pretty basic staple and they don't make their own from what I could tell... I really wanted to like Rose's. And my grilled cheese was pretty good. But the painfully slow food service is just too much to overcome. They need to either remodel and get a second griddle and second cook, or they need to reduce the number of people they serve so that they can do a better job serving them. read more
