I don't know where to start...it's been hours after my visit and I'm still traumatized. If you like horror films, you might want to take a stroll through this gem of a disaster. It will not disappoint if you can get through the front door, which is cluttered like a hoarders house. Once we walk through the tiny path between all the "antique gems", a deep awakening in our spirits happened. A spine, chilling moment. Something you would see on 60 minutes episode before a person was kidnapped. Suddenly a man from the back yelled out " you want a shot or a hot chocolate?". With fear and trepidation, we said no and he asked us if he scared us... we said "yes". We knew we had to get out of there fast. As we were trying to "escape", I saw a cat and tried to soften the awkwardness and talk to an older lady about the cat. Just as I did that, the older lady started yelling out. "They're not gonna buy anything, Jack! Why are they here if they don't wanna buy anything? They don't like our store? They should leave!!" He agreed and so did we! He lead me straight to the wicked witch who stopped me and my iced coffee at the door. She blocked me from Going in and told her I was insulting her by bringing a coffee in. We walked past this business, on the City sidewalk, as a family with an 8 yr old and a 2 yr. old. Our youngest touched a cement fountain that is positioned near the entry gate and the lady who owns the shop yelled at us; berated us loudly for not reading the sign that says "do not touch". Note: the fountain is located on the edge of the public sidewalk and our little girl literally touched it as we were passing. The Owner then proceeded to call the police on my 2 yr. old and we happily waited until the Officer arrived a few minutes later. The police officer literally asked us to fill out a complaint with the City against the business owner (apparently this happens with some frequency) and we moved along our day as the Officer stayed to calm down the Owner. I had no pre-warning about this place. I had walked past the quaint outside decor many dozens of times throughout the years on visits, but finally was in need of a coffee before seeing a show at the Holly. As I attempted to open the door a voice behind me asked if I wanted coffee. I said yes, processing that this must be the lady running the place on a break outside. She opened the door and behold, a treasure trove of precariously balanced antiques, collectibles and nick-knacks piled to the ceiling greeted me with a narrow walking path to the back. A hoarders nightmare threatening to engulf me further with each step. I didn't see price tags. This wasn't a store. This wasn't a coffee shop. I was in some Stephen King novel. A labyrinthine wasteland of kitsch meets crazy. At the back I see a sign with a choice of coffee or cappuccino, odd considering the "no espresso" sign in the front. I ask if she had anything like a cafe mocha. She said she did, then she proceeds to operate one of those gas station coffee makers that whirs and mixes chocolate drinks. We make some minor small talk. I make my way out of there, truly worried about ingesting anything that came out of there. That's when I noticed the little ant crawling around on top. So I had to check this place out on Yelp and it looks like I got off easy. read more

How is this place still in business? The male proprietor/owner is a piece of work. I walked in with my girlfriend and my father, greeted him, complimented the shop's layout & atmosphere, and cheerily asked to see their coffee menu. Within 5 minutes he had kicked us out (because my girlfriend had a mocha in hand when we'd walked in), verbally berated her, and ticked me off enough that the two of us were in a yelling match I'm confident the whole block could hear. I was ready and willing to brawl with him. This guy needs a reality check. Hey man, read this and repeat it to yourself daily: 1. I own a shop, the purpose of which is to make me money. 2. This shop offers antiques/trinkets and coffee - two things that can cone together to form a welcoming atmosphere. 3. If I want to sell antiques, then I should let people walk about my shop for longer than a handful of minutes. I should be kind and helpful - but give them space to experience my shop. 4. If I want to sell coffee then I'm best served to give little heed to what one person in a group has in their hand - opting instead to quench the thirst of anyone with an empty hand. Bonus points if my coffee is actually palatable. 5. Verbally berating my customers won't end well. 6. People pay attention to yelp's ratings and reviews - so I will too. read more

Go read the other two reviews. Fast forward 1 year and here I am. (literally. Its 12 months later with same Christmas decorations and the whole thing.) I'm seeing for myself what's going on with this shop. In all fairness, I did not have coffee here so this cannot merit a review of their menu. I'll just tell my story. Here is a breakdown of my interaction with this shop: Catchy outdoor area and garden furniture lured me in. Except I couldn't get in. It was between 2pm and 3pm and the doors were on lockdown. The cutest black kitty was purring and purring outside the door trying get back inside (gosh, I hope I don't have bad luck now). But the owner was nowhere near and I had to wish the kitty good luck out in the cold and see you later. Had dinner at the restaurant right next door. Asked the server hey where can I get a good cup of coffee? She suggested a couple places blocks and blocks away. She said I guess you can go next door at the Coffee Break. She shook her head. Trying to be nice, she said I have no idea why he is never open though. Not sure what the hours are. I felt like there was a long story behind her admonishment. Can't escape the small town talk, eh? So I finally got in around 6pm. I couldn't find the kitty again. But the shop was really nice! It's more like an antique shop with all sorts of knick knacks for your home and garden. Really unique stuff. I was way too afraid to take any pictures. You are reminded that your are on camera at every turn. Smile! I couldn't find the coffee counter. Then I spotted an older woman in the back standing next to the microscopic cluttered poster board of coffee offerings. She was complaining to the 2 other customers. They complimented her on the shop and how creative it was. Oh, I am not the owner she said. But that's the thing she says, everyone talks about how it's nice but nobody buys anything. And noone wants coffee. Well, the other customers seemed peeved. Then they ordered coffee. I scurried out. Here is my two cents..I would suggest you move the coffee station to the front of the shop so it's not buried in the back. Also, stop being a grinch. read more

I wouldn't even rate this place with one star. After grabbing coffee at another place, my family and I passed by this shop and went inside. We were immediately greeted by an awkward man standing by the door asking "You lookin' for coffee?" My boyfriend wasn't satisfied with his previous cup, so he said yes. The man lead us to the back of the cluttered antique shop and asked us what we wanted. He then saw the cup in my hands. "Oh, she already has coffee..." signaling to me, "You need to get out of my store with that." His glare was intimidating, so we left. I proceeded to take a picture of his place for this review and he came rushing out of his store yelling "Haven't you caused enough trouble today?!" My boyfriend told him to go back inside his store and leave me alone and he just stood there staring at us with his arms crossed. I have never felt more unwelcome and disrespected inside a business before. We left with my boyfriend feeling furious, his parents confused, and me on the edge of crying. After entering the place, one of the employees or maybe owner asked us if we were buying anything. When we said we'd never been here before and we were looking around, he said "I came in to serve you. If you're not buying anything...have a nice day" It was bizarre. Very odd place. Coffee shop was closed. We were parked in front waiting on others before we got in car to leave. A very strange lady came up and warned us that coffee shop was closed and wanted us to move on and not stand on the public sidewalk. She was very rude to my wife as she tried to explain we knew coffee shop was closed and we were about to leave. The strange lady who identified as the owner of the coffee shop warned us again shop was closed and we needed to move on. She seemed upset with us for standing on the public sidewalk and continued to watch us until we got in car to leave. If I could give this establishment a zero star I would. We visited Dahlonega just to see the creepy coffee lady and were pleased to see that she was just as rude as expected! (Not really, we were there for the Bear on the Square Festival - which was AWESOME) however, after our encounter we found she has something of a reputation here on yelp. Our visit was apparently consistent with past history. Our visit got off to a great start when we stopped first at Gold City Growlers (a craft beer pub) next door to the coffee shop. We chatted with the owner/bartender over 4 flights of tasty delights, while we readied ourselves for a trip around town. Fortified with liquid courage we ventured next door to add a little caffeine to the mix. As we neared the coffee shop, we noticed the sign out front that said "No! We do not have expresso!" Of course, such an opening could not be ignored, so we made note; then, as we turned the corner, there stood our objective - COFFEE - however, the owner also loomed before us blocking the door. "What do you want, she asked?" My sister-in-law (who will only be known as "S") said timidly "we just want to come in and look around, maybe have some coffee". The old lady barked "Look around, at what? It's $1 apiece to get into the museum" - well, this distracted us momentarily since for all appearances we thought we were at a coffee house. I summoned the courage to nudge my brother-in-law (known only as "T") and whispered "Ask if they have expresso" Well, he asked and it was as if the wrath of khan had been awakened. "WE'VE GOT A SIGN!" She scathingly retorted. As it was clear she was about to launch an attack, I thought it best to mount a diversion. I loudly spoke up (from the rear of our group) "Do you have a public restroom?" I asked. My clever distraction worked! As her face turned towards me, purple with rage, my group beat a hasty retreat towards safety. Our escape a success, we retired to the town square where we treated ourselves to chocolate and then tasty drinks at the Bourbon Street Grill while reliving our brush with danger. All in all, a great weekend in Dahlonega and, in other words, the drinks were good every place we tried them EXCEPT for this coffee shop where we never made it inside. read more

My boyfriend and I were walking past the shop after studying and noticed it was open for once. We decided to walk in and it was like a scene from Hoarders. Random junk everywhere and I was a little worried it would collapse on us at any time. We walked up to the counter and Norman Bates asked us if we wanted something, to which my friendly boyfriend told him we were just looking and didn't expect the store to be open. The guy asked us if we wanted something again and my boyfriend told him we would probably hold off for now but we would come back soon. Before he could even get the sentence out, Norman gives us a nasty stare and said "bye". So we left. The only good thing about this "coffee shop", which is just a coffee pot and some sodas, is the black cat outside that you can sometimes spot. This was one of the most bizarre places I've ever been. You walk up to the door, and there's threatening signs about children and beverages from other businesses. Then you go inside. It looks like an episode of hoarders. There is just stuff EVERYWHERE. Some of the stuff looked cool but I was very overwhelmed. We were greeted by a woman who was sort of surprised we wanted a cup of coffee. The coffee was actually really good for regular drip coffee and very reasonably priced. Later that day I encouraged my mom to go in the shop to see the inside. She went in and upon entry, the same lady said, "my gift shop is closed. I stopped in when I was in Dahlonega to visit the University of North Georgia. It was located in a cute town square, near a bunch of other stores. Coffee Break had an interesting charm to it. The entire place was cluttered in decorations. There was just a direct path to the back, where there was a counter with coffee. The employees were very nice and friendly but the coffee wasn't anything special. There was a very small coffee menu. It seemed more like an antique store that sold coffee than a coffee shop. The Coffee Break was definitely unique but I'm not sure I'd go back. read more

I had a very bad experience at this place. The lights were on and the door was unlocked, so I walked in to get coffee like any other normal person. I got screamed at by the owner saying the store was closed (how is it closed when it's unlocked and the lights are on with no closed sign?) We walked in with a a glass of water to purchase a cup of coffee and Broom-Hilda at the back counter rudely asked us "what do you want". Worse place we've been to in Dahlonega & definitely the worst we've ever been treated! We are local & I for months I have been dying to go in here but every time I went by or would have the time they were closed. It was finally open one night; & as I was walking up to the door a whole family looks at us & says, "you don't want to go in there, she is so rude!" After reading all of the terrible reviews, we just had to see if it was for real. I assumed all of the reviews came from one angry customer with too much time on their hands. Y'all - the reviews are 100% true! We got yelled at by the "son"'. It was a hoot and a definite laugh. Definitely a creepy hoarder situation with anger owners that will cuss you out. I can see why people would be caught by surprise if you weren't expecting it. If you make it to the back of the store where the coffee is sold, peak behind the divider. They have HUNDREDS of creepy dolls all lined up. They make a wall at least 6 feet high and 4 or 5 dolls deep stacked so close together that all you see are the heads. CREEPY and CRAZY. It was my oldest sister's birthday, and we had just come from looking at a beautiful wedding venue. There were six of us (me, my three sisters, and two of their boyfriends) The "open" sign inside the window was blinking red and blue, so we assumed it was open. Apparently not. An older woman starts harassing us and telling us the owner is a friend of hers and wouldn't be happy we were there. She then goes on to say, and I quote, "I don't think this is funny, y'all are ugly." Wow. Just wow. I told her that I wasn't sure because it's never open when we pass by so we haven't been able to go in. Awful and creepy!! I was just walking my dog and suddenly this black cat appeared from the bushes near the coffee shop, and my dog instinctively starts to dart towards the cat. This older man came out and told me directly "You are soo f****** stupid". The guy was rude and awful towards me and insulted me. I told him my dog was curious and was only checking the cat out. My dog is friendly and a lap dog. Apparently he technically owns this cat that was basically nowhere near his coffee shop. I told him that I will leave and once I started to walked up the street, he stared me down for the longest time ever. Not much of a coffee shop but a waste of time! What a quirky little place. There are signs all through the store saying to not bring in outside food or drink. There are also so many things piled around that I'm not sure if it's for sale or if I just walked into a hoarders house. The small counter at the back of the store is where you will find a very small coffee menu. My husband and just ordered coffee to go. It was just regular brewed drip coffee, nothing special, but it was good for us as we were just looking for an afternoon pick me up. The man behind the counter was very friendly toward us. We didn't have a terrible experience like the other reviews here, but we were so confused by the whole place that I wouldn't recommend it. read more

The owner attempted to turn me away before i even approached the door, which is discrimination. Then after i purchased my coffee i was harrassed for putting granulated sugar in my cup out of the packet. I was forced to hand my drink back and have another cup of black coffee handed to me. This time i added honey apparently that was 'ok'. Then i went outdoors to sit in the patio/garden area and was told it was for veiwing purposes only and was sent away. Horrible ugly nasty people. I honestly agree with other reviewers that i doubt this is a legitimate business. Coffee Break does not deserve even one star. While it appears to be a quaint, inviting shop from the street, one step inside the door and all that falls away. You are immediately "greeted" by one of the rudest people ever met. You are basically told if you're not buying coffee, you can leave. The proprietor told us she was trying to make a living and not interested in us if we were just browsing. While I know it will not likely accomplish anything, this encounter was promptly reported to city officials. Horrific Experience!! The owner, that looks like a witch, was standing outside and asked us why we were coming in. We said we wanted coffee. She said she would check if they were making any. HUH??? Isn't this a coffee shop?? Then she said they were. We went in and immediately she started yelling at the kids not to touch anything, even though they hadn't touched anything yet. One of my friends didn't get coffee and the lady asked her what was she doing there if she didn't get coffee. She said to stay away from the cat, 'cause the cat was not friendly and on our way out told us that they don't welcome kids. They have a sign outside that says, " Pets Welcome, Children must be on leash". In this case, that sign is not a joke. Terrible service, terrible coffee that came out of one of those automated machines you get in hospitals and the place is dusty and smells old. I have never in my life been so disrespected in a store before. I was in town for a bachelorette weekend and we just finished lunch. The store looks cute with tons of antiques outside. We went in to look around and the apparently if you do not buy a cup of coffee you are not welcome! The owner said Thanks for nothing when we decided to wait until later in the afternoon for coffee. I was browsing the store when she came up to me and said is there something I can help you with, I said no in just looking but thank you, she then proceeded to stand with her arms crossed in front of me. I asked is that alright and she went off- saying that this is a business and people always come in and don't buy anything. Well excuse me it's an antique store and I have to look before I buy, so because I didn't buy your cup of coffee I am not welcome?! What? If you had just treated us with a little but of respect I would have bought the $125 dollar sled on the left wall of your shop- Maybe the reason you are struggling and no one purchases any of your products is because you don't even give them the time of day to look. I proceeded to continue shopping at another store and told them about my experience and they knew exactly who I was speaking about. After reading the other reviews after returning home I know that If I could give it no stars I would have because this place deserves to be shut down for sheer rudeness to potential customers. This is by far the worst place to walk into and expect common courtesy or a friendly welcome. It was pouring rain in 30 degree weather and the lights were on and it was interesting decor out front so we decided to check it out as we were out having a nice evening shopping and seeing the town. We walk in the front door and I barely made my way toward the back counter with a couple steps inside before I past the live cat sitting on a chair and said awe look at the sweet cat (without touching because I'm allergic). Then I said, "you have such a beautiful store" to the gentleman at back counter with a smile as I admired the things supposedly for sale. He was anything but a gentlemen when he snapped at me and said "were only open for coffee and desert GOODBYE." Umm, how did he know we didn't want anything and how do you expect to make money running people out? I turned and told my family "go, go, get out this guy doesn't want us in here or our business." I laughed as I left because I have never experienced such a bad and unusual experience. Don't waste your time with these grumpy people. This is a horrible place. Don't even think about going in if you have children. They have a sign outside which states "Pets welcome, Children on a Leash" This isn't meant to be witty. They truly dislike children. The man in the shop was unexpectedly rude and inappropriate to me any my eight year old daughter. HORRIFIC PLACE!!!!!!!! She persisted to be extremely RUDE- arguing w me that we just ate and can't look around? -- I stopped conversation abruptly hen I realized how ridiculous she was and told her that we don't even want her business because she was being so rude -we walked away confused and angry and- thats when she came out of the door following us to the sidewalk and yelled F*ck you and go to hell.......??? ? Total lunacy Just because people have a freedom of speech and own a public accomodation does not give them the right to harass ,yell, or pick and choose who can enter the store. That is called profiling, discrimination , and harassment! Plus i will not be surprised that this business is total false representation of a business. We did nothing wrong other than walk up to the door. This lady is twisted and completely unhinged - it needs and it will be reported to authorities who will actually do something and further investigate this shady establishment and whatever really goes on in there - I am a business owner and i am baffled at not only how she treated us but the fact so many other cases have been reported if similair instamces and still nothing has been done? ? . . As we talked to more locals and to those at the visitor center more stories diverged - they started saying how this place was speculated to be a scam - being they are never open nor do they sell anything - apparenly many cases have been reported of the woman and the man who work here on how awful and hateful and intensely uncomfortable they make people. There are reports of them shooing people out for no reason and their outspoken comments of hatred for children. They lie about their cat as being evil mean or wild and that it will bite you which is absolutely untrue - I personally petted that cat for a long time prior to going in and she was the sweetest cat ever. They serve coffee equivalent to what you can make at home??? and the menu is pathetic just Scribbled on poster board? For them to act annoyed and aggrivated when people are there -is just another testiment to solidifying that this place is a false representation of a business - they obviously do not need the business - especially since they are never open, locals dont go there because of all the heresay, and they hardly sell anything - Hmmm shady place if you ask me. It is unbelievable bc this would not fly in the city and shouldn't fly with the officials of Dahlonega. . This is very unfortunate for dahlonega to have such a backwoods mean spirited place on their downtown block. Where store owners or workwrs chase their customers out to the street --there is more than enough cases of this harassment reported to have probable cause for further investigation !!!! ..
