This place has a very clean interior and a modern chic appearance. I came here with a girlfriend and we ordered the cafe au lait and the raspberry iced tea. I thought the coffee would have a leaf or animal stenciled in with steamed milk but sadly, it was just a blob. I got it with hazelnut syrup and it was sweetened just enough. Bay Ridge needed a more hip coffee shop for a while and this brand new addition fills the void. The owner and workers are very friendly - no attitudes here. The owner mentioned that the coffee is organic, in addition to the milk, so this definitely separates The Coffee Lab from the rest in this area. The Cortado was made perfectly - supported by a nicely balanced espresso brew, of course. Would like to see some organic goodies offered soon in addition to maybe some gluten free, and vegan options. There is something about the uber modern and sanitary decor though.... maybe it needs to be a little more beat up or something. read more

Note: I'm rating this coffee shop in terms of how comfortable it was for me to study in it. I gave this coffee shop 3 stars for the following reason: 1. I got an iced soy vanilla latte and it was delicious 2. I tried the banana Nutella waffle and it was ok... the waffle was over cooked and didn't taste that great but Nutella makes everything taste good so I ate it. 3. I hated the tables they had in this shop. There is a metal bar underneath the table right above the knees. I've bumped into that metal bar a few times and it was annoying. 4. The environment is good but I just didn't like sitting at the table and chairs. 5. I like to have good coffee, good food, and good study environments and this wasn't that amazing for me. Other than my criteria's for studying in the coffee shop, I'd go to the shop for another iced soy vanilla latte :) read more

Helpful and friendly staff, I wish the food menu had a bit more variety and options. The food they do have is good, I cannot complain. Coffee is great, the mood and shop itself is nice. GREAT PLACE TO STUDY! If you want a cafe that's quiet and spacious where you can work this is the one. They have a wide varieties of drinks and food you can order. Most of the customers are with laptops, wires plugged into the outlet working so it's quite quiet. I got a hot chocolate and cinnamon toast. I came here with the intention to study and slightly disappointed but their coffee made up for it. I tried their Rose Latte and it was absolutely delicious!! They also have lavender Latte as well which is something I'm going to come back for. I tried the Nutella Monster that my boyfriend ordered and... boy was I jealous. It was icy cold with two espresso shots. The environment was a bit crowded when I came to do some work. There is only one outlet at each edge of the room. The chairs are not that comfortable either. This would a study spot for the locals, but I wouldn't troop here to do work. BUT I would troop here for their coffee :) RANDOM: their bathroom had a urinal, toilet, and the thing for changing baby diapers (forgot what's its called - made out of plastic). In a neighborhood that severely lacks high-end coffee, Coffee Lab is a very welcome addition, especially in the northern part of Bay Ridge that I seldom visit. The coffee bar is bright and airy, with cute beakers as decoration. The owners of Coffee Lab were incredibly friendly and introduced me to my new favorite iced drink - the cortado! It was perfectly rich without being overly sweet. The macarons were also fluffy and delicious. I took my drink to go, but I could see myself relaxing and reading a book for a while, enjoying the nice sunlight and decor of the establishment. I'm really happy to see places like Coffee Lab, Lockyard, Kathy's Dumplings, and Robicelli's sprouting up in Bay Ridge. They bring real quality without any hipster ego - the best type of establishment! I'll definitely be visiting again. read more

I'm a coffee lover and SW Brooklyn native. I just visited The Coffee Lab today after reading about it in an article recently and wow, this place has a great atmosphere with super friendly baristas and they serve amazing coffee. I'm not talking about your run-of-the-mill decent cup from Starbucks or anywhere else that takes pride in their coffee, but high-end, artisanal brew that (sadly) you can't find anywhere else in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, or Bensonhurst. Despite the fact that I'm coffee-obsessed, I'm no purist, so I usually add cream and sugar to my cup depending on the quality of the brew. As such, a standard hot latte with nothing added is always a good starting point for me to test out a new place. I'm happy to say that the latte was served to perfection -- perfect temperature, smooth, nuanced flavor, and yum, just the right amount of creaminess. After I try a new coffee spot that I like, I usually get like a kid in an amusement park wanting to try everything, so after I finished my latte, I opted for a "Nutella Monster." It's an iced blended coffee drink with Nutella and vanilla flavoring (if you're a fan of Starbucks Frappucinos, you'll absolutely love this). It was delicious. My stomach couldn't handle more than two drinks, but next time I want to try their Cortado. They also carry a few pastries from Balthazar which is nice, but this place is really all about the coffee. As a heads up, you'll be paying more than Dunkin and, in some cases, Starbucks here, but then, the reason why you'd go to The Coffee Lab is to.. drink.. better.. coffee.. than.. Dunkin.. and.. Starbucks. I hope that registers for people. Queue the old adage: you get what you pay for. BONUS: they're bike friendly too. I didn't have a lock to secure my bike to the curbside rack, so they told me to wheel it (through the shop) out to the backyard where there's an outdoor patio with extra seats. I was able to leave it back there while I enjoyed my coffee(s) in the comfort of the air conditioned seating area inside, which is a very nice decor by the way (think Chipotle's modern/industrial look but slightly more minimal). I'm so glad that we finally have a good coffee spot in this part of Brooklyn. It used to be that I had to travel to Park Slope, Red Hook, or Manhattan for a good brew, but The Coffee Lab will definitely be my new go-to when I'm looking for something fancier than a homemade Aeropress. I forgot to ask where they get their coffee, but I'm sure they're using beans from a quality roaster. I'll be sure to ask next time I'm in there. read more

Snazzy 'new kid on the block', as far as coffee options on the north side (the forlorn, under-served, and neglected half) of Bay Ridge. When you're hard up against the border of the wasteland of Sunset Park there's not a lot of stylin' or profilin' going on. Well, 'Coffee Lab' may help change that. It definitely is high style. Frankly, not the kind of store we usually see in this neighborhood; the logo (chemistry beakers) implies academia & laboratories (aka 'putting on airs' to the local mindset). Anyway. This particular address was well-chosen for a coffee klatch as its got heavy foot traffic always passing by. Plus, there's no serious java challenge elsewhere in the vicinity; although all the little stores around here have simple coffee hot-plate stations near their registers--that's not serious coffee. The heavy-hitters (Starbucks, DD) are all down at the other end of the Ridge. I stopped in to talk to the manager and examine the menu and found the store interior to be clean, airy, well-lit, and organized (great re-hab job from the former electronics store). Very sleek, rad decor; super yar color scheme. Best-looking cafe for blocks. It also has a nifty sign out front. The gentleman in change was welcoming and enthusiastic about his venture, and explained the company philosophy to me. I had a small sip of some of the mud and found it zesty. Overall, I think this is a very welcome addition to (typically dingy) 3rd Ave! Great to see a new store take up where a previous one has fallen! This coolness, (along with Owl's Head wine bar and the new Pashazade a few blocks away) should be magnets for swank babes and generally help revitalize the area. Its good to see that the mini-renaissance taking over the south side of the hood (Lockyard Bar, etc) is maybe sprinkling its effects all the way up this way. Its a sign that maybe Bay Ridge will not always be reliant on dive-bars for places to hang out. In fact I think we should try to develop a little mystique--a bit of hob-nob culture-- around this joint. Bring a book, drop your business card, leave some napkin origami on the table. I've been to Coffee Lab nearly every day since it opened. Which alone should represent the five-star review, but I'll elaborate a little. First, the coffee is good. Pretty essential for a coffee joint, and they've got it nailed down. My normal order (and their standard iced coffee drink) is an iced americano. That guarantees a fresh brew for every cup. $3 for a cup, which is not bad. They just added Cold Brew to their menu too, if you're looking for a slightly different flavor. It's a little pricier ($3.50-4.50 depending on size), but you're also getting a better punch-per-cup ratio. Second - and this is where this place wins me - is the "coffee house" atmosphere. This is what Bay Ridge was missing. I can brew a mean cup of joe at home and pour it over ice just as well as they can brew me an iced americano. But I /can't/ zone into focus on work quite like I can when I'm out at a shop like this. The decor is cute, pretty neutral. Music is kept at a reasonable volume. Tunes are family-friendly, maybe a bit conservative (but that's Bay Ridge for you, and nothing a pair of earbuds can't invalidate). Big windows in the front are a huge plus in the springtime (now). There's a couple of tables that have access to outlets; the wifi is fast and free. Overall, a great place to grab a seat with your laptop and get some stuff done. The owner and the employees are very friendly. In the few weeks since it opened, I've gotten more than my fair share of free or discounted goodies as I'm sure they've noticed I've become a bit of a regular. Thanks! If there's anything I'd complain about, it's that this place still has a very "new" vibe. It doesn't yet have that lived-in, earned ease that the very best coffee shops have. I wish I could give Coffee Lab two different ratings, one for the coffee itself and one representing my happiness that Bay Ridge finally has an actual, real live, local, independently owned coffee shop that you can do work in, meet friends in, or relax. (Or really just my happiness that it has a non chain coffee source at all). I'll start with the good- I love the vibe here! It's bright and clean with fresh flowers and a mix of big, spacious tables and cozy seats for two. The staff is so pleasant, and though there are always people in and out it's never an overwhelming crowd. I've come here a few times during the day or on weekends to do work and have never had a trouble snagging a seat or outlet. Also you can sit outside in the backyard! The iced Nutella is a delicious, decadent drinkable treat. The "Nutella monster" is a different drink, still good but more reminiscent of an ice cream shake/ Sbux frappucino. I go with iced Nutella, a creamier espresso blend, instead. So why so much love and than four stars instead of five? The iced coffee just...isn't....good. I don't know if they burn it or are just brewing it too strong, but to say that it's unbearable is not an exaggeration. I still come here all the time and get it when I'm doing work, but I wouldn't seek them out if I was in the mood for a good iced coffee. read more

It's taken me awhile to get to writing this review and it's one I should have done awhile back! I come to this place very frequently and I think it's one of the gems of Bay Ridge. Collectively, I think there are only 2-3 places in Bay Ridge where it's a welcoming environment to sit with a fresh, delicious cup of coffee and work. Coffee Lab is very welcoming, lighting is great, the staff are super friendly. The wi-fi is fast, outlets are available, bathrooms are clean and the drinks/pastries are delicious. Although I personally haven't tried their Nutella Latte, I heard it's to die for. My wife loved their Affogato. When the weather is nice, they also have a back patio area with bench seating! I really don't know what else you could ask for from this place; it's really one of my favorite places in Brooklyn. Their almond croissant is nothing short of perfect and their iced coffee is on point. i was so excited to see this place open up and even more excited to hear that they get their beans from toby's estate! i haven't had a chance to see their outdoor seating but that's a huge plus for the warm weather. i know this place is new but i have a few pointers for the business owners: 1. you need loyalty cards. the only reason i'd choose starbucks over you is because i get free rewards there; and for someone who gets coffee everyday, it adds up. or do a yelp/4square promo. first check-in = BOGO, etc. 2. im not sure if they serve regular coffee. i usually don't order drip, but it's quicker for a morning crowd and people love iced coffee! 3. food. you need more! a couple times now, i've made the choice of visiting starbucks just because i wanted a spinach square with my iced americano. 4. seating is a little.. awkward. everything is very spaced out. the combination of that plus the bright lighting makes you feel like you're in the spotlight. 5. the place is called coffee lab, but it doesn't feel like one. experiment with the idea of what a 'lab' does. make different types of espresso drinks that you can own. the nutella latte is a start; but sounds super sweet for the crowd who really just want good quality coffee without the fluff. 6. service. you're nice. but i feel like you lack.. professionalism & efficiency. A good running cafe needs to be quick and lively. Offer me specials. Before I review... first... L O L at all these Bay Ridgers comparing this to dunkin or starbucks. No it won't have frappucinos, no it won't be open at 6:30 AM... this is a small business! That being said. Three cheers for Coffee Lab! Two years of living in Bay Ridge, hundreds of horrible DD iced coffees later, and finally you come to me, Coffee Lab. You're just a few blocks too far for me and I need to bike there, but, you serve up wonderful coffee, on par with Gimme, Grumpy, Joe, etc. You're just what the neighborhood needed. I will be honest: I was quite skeptical when this place first opened. I didn't share the idea of grab-and-go FiDi design for a neighborhood coffee shop. But once I came inside and made my first order - everything else didn't really matter. These guys really DO KNOW what coffee is and how to brew it. If you lived in Italy or Spain and got accustomed to a real coffee then Starbucks' "coffee drinks" won't do. At Coffee Lab the brews are awesome, delicious, have a distinctive flavor and a large variety. Owners are very nice guys, very friendly and talkative. They are getting their pastry from a well-known French bakery on a daily basis, which is a good characteristic to me. And you can see how much work and effort they put into business. And with my strong support to local businesses - they couldn't get less than 5 stars. And the final touch for them to own my heart (and body, because without morning coffee I'm a zombie) was understanding the neighborhood. Many times I walked in with a dog and they never said a single thing but once. And it was: "Would you like a cup of water for your dog?". And even though I still don't share the idea of bright deconstructive design I strongly recommend everyone to check this place out! read more

Came here solely for the purpose of needing a study space. There's a good amount of seating along with outlets (bless) and wifi. Ended up ordering a lavender latte, which was surprisingly so good! I'm not the most reliable coffee critic considering I hate drinking coffee most times, but this cup was super creamy and didn't disappoint. The staff offer us a free drink for our next visit because they felt that the wait time for our orders took longer then they would of liked. This spot is locate conveniently down the block from the house, which I am so thankful for! I found this spot a little bit less than a year ago, and this place have grown (menu wise and attraction wise) exponentially. During my last visit here, the menu have extended far past just the mocha latte that was offer as their sweet espresso drink. (Almost spelled espresso with an "x"... I wonder how many people make that mistake? Not me!) The menu now consist of food as well, which totally beats Starbucks. The food offer includes your breakfast and brunch items, such as oatmeals (with quite a few exotic toppings) along with the waffles. The pricing can be a little pricer but for the quality that is offer in this cute accommodating venue it is worth the extra buck. The coffee here is between $2 and $4, depending on sizes and they offer classic syrup and honey at the condiment bar that is easily accessible. The lab offers free wifi and outlets, and I am developing a habit of coming here to study for my upcoming GRE, I have no problem focusing. A lot of the patrons similar to myself use this spot as a haven for studying and getting work done, thank you Coffee Lab! The shop also have music in the background, and now they even offer an outside patio seating. The staff offers to bring drinks out to you, and certain times when the barista construct a new concoction they offer taste tests to customers. The outside patio is awesome, it is getting colder but the wooden benches and big tables outside makes it a great spot for group studying. I just noticed today that there is bike station right outside the shop, and the spot of locate conveniently down the block from the train station as well.
