This place is not worth the money!! We ordered half a sheet cake ahead of time. When we show up to pick up the cake it wasn't ready. They couldn't read their own handwriting and thought we were picking it up a different day. The misunderstanding was understandable. We were asked to come back in a few hours to pick up the cake. When we return to pick up they cake it looks like it was decorated in 10 minutes. For $80 I was expecting something nicer. The bakery tried to blame us and say we showed up on the wrong day. They didn't offer anything for the inconvenience and their mistake. We could've got a nicer cake from the grocery store for a fraction of the cost. Having a well known name doesn't make up for lack of customer service & baking skills. Update- we served the cake and it tastes worse than it looks. My sister, who has lived in Ellenville, New York for over 50 years, sent me a large package from Cohen's' Bakery located in Ellenville. I was so surprised that the package contained a large box marked Cohen's Bakery. My sister's birthday gift was 3 lbs of mostly chocolate rugelach with several raspberry and apricot rugelach. I must tell you once I started eating the chocolate pastry I found it so hard to stop. I did try the raspberry and apricot but Cohen' chocolate rugelach is to die for. I have never tasted rugelach so good. What a birtday gift!! Cohen's does not ship. If you are in the area give Cohen's Bakery a try. They are known for their raisin pumpernickel bread and they have very good Black & White cookies. You can stop at their cafe for breakfast and lunch. I do really love cohens but my donuts were old and I was disappointed today. I also felt rushed when I wanted to order more baked goods and received my bagel toasted when that was not requested!!?? Cream cheese turned to water-yuk! There needs to be a more organized system when patrons walk in. People seemed confused, clustering in awkward small spaces near bakery counter. Love the bagels and other baked goods here. It's great to have a place close to home to pick up some fresh rolls on the weekend when you have time to relax on your day off with a cup of coffee. Breakfast is always served fresh and the prices are right. My favorite though is going at lunch time and getting the California BLT. The bacon is crisp and the avocado is fresh. To say that this place is great would be an understatement. Cohen's Bakery truly truly is a hidden gem. I recently moved to Ellenville and this place is my favorite. Not just do they have good service and warm cozy atmosphere but the food is awesome. I have never been disappointed by any meal here, always satisfied and happy. This wouldn't be a proper review if I didn't talk about the pastries they sold here though... OH MY GOD. The Food and ambiance was nice, but the service was disgusting. The lady who serviced our table was very rude, she wasn't very attentive first of all, but what made my families experience uncomfortable was the servers nasty remarks. She mentioned more than once in a aggressive tone that people like us need to leave tip on the table, because people like us don't ever leave tip? First of all she didn't even give us the receipt to pay or give us the chance to leave her tip either on the card or in cash. It was a indeed an awful experience!! Visited the Rhinebeck store which recently opened. Placed an order for thanksgiving pickup, arrived at the day and time agreed, counter staff couldn't find the order. After a 10 minute q&a they found the box with the ticket taped to it. I ordered two small pumpkin pies, and upon getting home realized they instead gave me 2 slices of pie in the box - for $13. Went back to the store the day after Thanksgiving and they said that we received the wrong box, and we could buy the right pies if we want. No offer to make their mistake right. I won't be back. Very disappointing news here. I grew up on Cohen's bread. We looked forward to my Dad bringing home bagels and rolls on Sunday mornings. On our visit, however, the only bagel varieties were plain, sesame, poppy, ET and something else. No onion, garlic, salt, egg, pumpernickel or rye. I settled on sesame and ordered it not be toasted. It was awful...stale, heavy, nasty. I know this is the second owner, but geeze! You've still got the recipes and baker. Why try to reinvent the wheel? Never going back. read more

We came upon Cohen's when looking to grab a cup of coffee. The pastries all looked great and we ended up grabbing a chocolate "frozen dough" and a cherry turnover. The frozen dough seems to be a little-known pastry that looks like a flat croissant, but has the consistency of "babka meets croissant". Needless to say it was delicious, and the turnover was great as well. We actually came back the next day for another frozen dough but they were all out. Unfortunately, everything we got was pretty stale. We got some chocolate dipped butter cookies with jam in the middle. The jam was so hard, it couldn't be bitten through and the cookie just crumbled off of it. Chocolate croissant was very soft/stale--no crunch left. I was terribly disappointed in the items I purchased. I didn't eat at the restaurant,and most folks love it. Regardless of this review, I'll try it in the future. I bought a Raisin and Plain Challah, some Poppy Seed bread, and a Blueberry Turnover. The Challahs looked great. However, both were on the Dry side - not"eggy", as a good traditional Challah should be. The Turnover, an impulse purchase because it looked great, was Awful. Dry - like eating cardboard - with some Blueberry Goop for the fruit. It would be better warmed, but it was disappointing. The Poppy Seed bread was so sweet I couldn't tell if the inside Poppy filling was Poppy, or even chocolate. I drove 25 miles to get real Challah and stuff from a traditional JewishBakery and was disappointed by the Mediocre products I purchased. I don't doubt that ingredients are high quality. I REALLY wanted to love this place and am not being overly critical. The prices are high, but not if the stuff were better. That's not my complaint. The RaisinPumpernickel IS Excellent- though a loaf is $26. I will try it again, and update this as I'll try other stuff. read more

Not worth it. Let me explain... I was in the area and saw this bakery & decided to give it a try. I open the door to a hole in the wall and begin to scan the items behind the glass. The employee offered a piece of their biscotti. How kind, right? Little did i know i'd be biting into a sponge. This cookie was SOFT. Now, i'm no expert, but isn't biscotti supposed to be hard and crunchy? As you can imagine, i didn't order any biscotti after that incident and i was hesitant to even try anything else. So, i ordered a small iced coffee with mocha & a small cafe con leche. 2 items. The total for these 2 items? $10. For 2 small drinks? That's a bit steep, don't you think? Hoping the quality of the items would redeem the experience thus far, i paid and carried on. Starting with the iced coffee: half of the cup was filled with ice. I had to scoop out the majority of it so the beverage wouldn't be watered down. After doing so, half of the cup is filled with liquid. The taste? Imagine watery, burnt coffee trying to be a gourmet cup of coffee. The cafe con leche tasted okay, however, upon taking off the lid, there was a fourth of liquid missing! Even if i did add milk, there would still be a large gap of nothing in the cup! If you are going to charge this much for 2 below average beverages, either 1. charge half the current price or 2. don't sell these items at all. Please, do better for potential future customers. read more
