I hear it over and over "we keep giving this place a chance" and I've given it my last chance. It is so overpriced for the quality of the food. Special requests, custom orders and substitutions are not followed. They will make the next closest thing on their menu to your request(putting in things not asked for... insisting you ordered a menu item and not just a custom order) they definitely have favorite customers and they will put them ahead of people who have been waiting in line. I have been rushed away from my table multiple times when eating in the restaurant to make room for their regulars. There is no professionalism at all. The only thing I like is that the business has stood for years and years but what good is an old building that serves overpriced crappy food? I seriously hope they figure it out but with the attitude the staff gives off, I feel no one working there now will put in the effort to fix anything. read more

This is the only place within 75 miles to make decent saltsticks..or saltsticks of any quality for that matter. I pre-ordered 3 dozen of them the day before I drove up there. They are not as good as they were in my childhood, as they lack the crustiness a great saltstick must have. But they are better than nothing. I also bought a rye bread which tasted pretty crappy. The few desserts I sampled were meh. The gal behind the counter lost her personality years ago in a freakish accident I believe. Her smile as well. read more

Woah, blast from the past!! I grew up upstate, but have been in the Midwest and in California for 30 years. This place evoked some major ancestral spirits for me -- my grandparents and their siblings were all eastern European Jews, and back in the day, we all lived on the stuff you can still find at Cohen's. Most would put it on the side nope all mixed in and the server did not know the difference between half and half and cream. Said they don't have cream. Really? This is a bakery! They use cream. It's been a while since I was able to visit Cohen's, but, what a let down. First of all, the clerk gave us different items than what we requested...we should have been paying more attention..and the quality is just not there anymore. It's OK, but, that's about it. The ruggalech was doughy, too big, and not that good, the poppyseed strudel was ok, but, lacked flavor, again, not flaky at all. The cheese Danish? Where's the cheese? And it was really blah. Too bad that a trusted, reliable institution like Cohen's I not as good any more. The goods tasted like someone is using cheaper ingredients and taking the easy way out to run a bakery. OMG the bread, the pastries, the everything they make at this bakery is positively delicious. The challah and rye breads are my favorite but can't pick a favorite of the cakes. Yeah! Cohen's is back. New owner has revived the bakery to it's former glory. I'm not a sweets guy, but this place is fabulous. Maria has started dinners on Friday and Saturday in the new addition. Food is delicious, but I've been very disappointed when I've ordered some delicious looking cookies that I see on the class from "my" side, only to get home to find I received an older, dried version. I understand rotating inventory, but seriously, that is false advertising. Older items should be wrapped and sold for less, which I see there is a basket for. Don't charge me full price for day(s) old baked goods! read more

End of an era? Like another recent reviewer, I grew up on Cohen's bread but now live too far away to stop in regularly. I still make the trip several times a year and buy a few loaves for the freezer. I heard they changed owners, but the last two times I visited the rye was decent and the pumpernickel raisin was still fabulous! A few days ago I picked up a loaf of pumpernickel raisin. Sad to say, it's now just "meh." I'm disappointed I bought this gigantic thing, since I can't eat it myself and definitely won't serve it to guests. Hopefully it's just a fluke and they'll go back to the old recipe. I'll give them another chance--a quarter of half a loaf next time--and edit my review if necessary. read more

Their rugelach is the best there is. I work over the summer designing at Shadowland which is across the street, and the folks at the tech table introduced me to their rugelach, which I now have to bring home almost every time I go up there. It's so good, we were going to get it for my daughter's bat mitzvah, but there was a giant storm and we couldn't travel the 95 miles to get there... but I would travel 95 miles for their rugelach. We got there and the pastries were alright... kind of looked better than they tasted, but hey, its a pastry so who's really complaining... but I couldn't get over the dead flies littering the entire floor in the side room. The cinnamon sticks. Oh my god, the cinnamon sticks. I got a few things here, and they were all good - especially the black and white cookie - but the cinnamon stick was pretty much a religious experience. I have never done a yelp review but the after hearing how wonderful Cohen's was, I had to see for myself and boy was I disappointed. So disappointed I feel compelled to share my experience. This place must have changed hands based on the positive reviews I see. We went to Cohen's for breakfast - our first time. Waitress was nice enough but we had to ask for water 3 times and she never asked if we needed refills on our coffee or how everything was. Coffee and omelettes were good but my wife said the eggs were off and she wound up with a case of diarrhea. The rye toast was more like crustini than toast and hardly any butter. The home fries were burnt, dry and cold at the same time - along with the cold empanadas. Bad breakfast. Cookies are $11/ pound - not horrible but not good. Bakery girl charged $5 for a Dixie cup in volume of vanilla custard and $5 for a small mousse. She argued with my wife over a cheese cake she wrapped that my wife didn't order. She said "I heard cheese cake" - she did - from the other customer at the counter. The mistake was not the issue - the poor attitude toward customer service was. BTW - there were only 4 people in the restaurant - they were not busy. They are expanding and I hope they improve their service with the expansion. We plan not to return. read more

I used to love the corn rye but had not had it in some years, so I was delighted to stop in when driving through the village. After having the clerk slice the loaf, I asked him to let me take the schpitz (heel) before he closed up the bag. It was stale. I asked him when the bread had been baked, and he admitted that it was a day old. I asked him when he had been planning to tell me, and he said that he was going to give it to me for half-price. I suspect that if I had not tasted the bread he would never have said a word. So now he has one sliced loaf of stale bread and a customer who will never come back. read more

It's hard to find a bakery in upstate NY, especially a good one. This please was decent, I just wished that I didn't see the dirty door or the knickknacks behind the counter. Maybe we should have sampled some of the sweets before purchasing a box of them but hey, you live and learn. The sweets are okay and nothing yet made me say "Oh my world! I have to get more". Bought a cake for the holidays to bring to a family's house paid 25.00 and they put it in a plastic container not a box it looks like I bought it from Walmart. Last time I bought a cake for my wife's birthday the whole bottom af the cake was soggy like it was frozen then thawed and that cake was 50.00. All I have to say is WOW!!! At those prices. Aaaah, Cohen's! Consistently wonderful! Take a few chocolate frozen dough home and freeze them. Heat them gently in your microwave and enjoy with coffee. Amazing! Their mandel bread is lovelier than biscotti. Old standard raisin pumpernickel even better with walnuts. Excellent craft breads w nuts and seeds. And for dessert, almond horns. This is not just a bakery. Believing that it was just a bakery kept me from coming here for years. Now I know - these are the best hot sandwiches in the Rondout Valley. The Reuben and the Turkey Club are both exceptional; the Cubano is also very good. Service is friendly and fast. There is a seating area accessed from near the register, which isn't obvious when first visiting. This is a weekly lunch spot now, for sure. read more
