Update to my horrible experience with CoHo Automotive: Everything happens for a reason, including the treatment that my family and I received from CoHo Automotive. The owners, Chris Coulter and Dan Howell, may have gotten away with their egregious behavior and lack of goodwill, but only for a short period of time. I have run into multiple people who have used this shop and they attest that they will never do business with them again. Also: Chris Coulter contacted his attorney, I guess to place fear in my court so that I would remain silent. The best offense is being defensive. To date: I have not been able to sell my car for the Kelley Blue Book Value because of the neglect of quality control and assurance of Coho Automotive and Karen Radley Volkswagen. read more

I'm very disappointed with Coho. I have been a good customer and gave them an excellent review in the past. I took my vehicle in for a problem. Upon taking it to their shop I had a horn. Upon leaving I did not. When my vehicle was ready, Cody called and said I have good news and bad news. The bad m ews was zi no longer had a horn. That could be fixed for an additional $1000+. The work they just performed was already $1000+. I have now found out the reason I no longer had a horn was caused by Coho. I reached out to them to inform them about this issue. They asked me to bring it in, I did so. They would not take responsibility, but offered to repair it for half price. I declined. It was their error, why should I pay anything. This is the 2nd time to question their integrity. A couple of months ago the headlight in vehicle went out. I called the shop, they gave me an appointment for the next day. Upon arriving, I was told they didn't have anyone available to look at it and then I received another appointment for the next day. Chris said the housing probably needed to be replaced. He called the dealership and told me that would be $1000+. I didn't feel quite right about that. I drove to another shop my neighbor uses. They replaced the bulb, replacing the housing never came up. Went in for a state inspection. Was rejected and subsequently told by the front desk clerk that it was due to having tinted film on the headlights. Attempted to explain to him that the housing is black, and that the film is a clear PPF. His rebuttal was that he's seen Teslas before with white headlights. He then told me that I had leave, remove the film, come back another time, and pay an additional $20 to have it reinspected. I left, called the place again, spoke to the inspector, and attempted to explain to him the situation. I also told him that my vehicle came with black headlights, and can be easily looked up on the official Tesla website. He told me that Virginia Code does not allow film on the headlights, and will not pass my inspection. I looked up the Virginia code afterwards, which is 19VAC30-70-510, pg 153. And it states there is an exception for clear impact film. Decided this wasn't a trustworthy nor a competent shop, and went to a different one in town. After explaining the situation to the new place. The second shop pulled out their light box and showed me that my headlights had no tint, and should've passed. Then, the second shop performed a full inspection, and passed my vehicle. Also while reading the Virginia State Police MVS inspection manual. I found out that having a car reinspected at the same shop is suppose to cost $1, not another $20 like the front desk clerk stated. I would not recommend this place base on the incompetence and ignorance of the staff. read more

About 6-7 months later (3k miles) which isn't a lot of miles in 6-7 months, same problem arises. According to them it was something else that broke after they had fixed it the first time so it doesn't fall under the warranty they provide and now it's going to cost us $1,000 to have it fixed but we're taking our business elsewhere now. Originally I was going in to replace (mount and balance) 2 rear tires + 4 wheel alignment. Through their tool, they noted that the cords were showing, but what's more they followed up through text to see how I wanted to proceed, with no hint of a tire sales pitch! The were flexible with me leaving my car overnight as the last minute front tires arrived the next day. Their online/digital presence is very informative. In this day in age of people ripping you off. I didn't feel that way with these guys. They were very professional, sent me an estimate via text and even followed up after the repairs. Only thing I would change is they don't have the ability to schedule an appointment online but I've had bad experiences with other repair shops over booking and not being able to do the repairs so this may be why they don't schedule appointments online. Like others here have stated, I hate going to the Death Star - dealership. I have been searching for an independent shop for two years near Gainesville since moving back to VA. Its harder than finding your favorite Thai place on Yelp! When my 2011 VW Sportwagen mysteriously stalled while going down the road, I was desperate and called a friend who immediately told me to call Coho. The next day, Chris called me and said that he wanted me to call VW and see if the repair (hi pressure diesel fuel injector pump) would be covered since the car was only 2k+ over the 36k warranty. I was amazed that he felt it was more important for me to see if VW would pay for the repair instead of me paying Coho to fix it. I was delighted that VW would cover the repair under the powertrain warranty - which I have never had to use before! That speaks loads of Coho's integrity. Dan said he would not sleep well if they had made the repair and I would have found out later that the $1500 repair would have been covered by the factory. The shop is very clean, nice waiting area with TV, wifi, and the techs are very approachable. I would definitely recommend Coho to others. read more

They fixed the whole thing in one business day. Phenomenal. PRICE: Very very fair. Itemized invoices. Multiple options offered depending on your budget. They work quick and don't milk the labor hours. Honest operation. LOCATION/STOREFRONT: Fully equipped, but small and clean, in what is more of an office park than an industrial park. As to the reason for the 3 Star review I was estimated to have 2,400$ of work needed for my car. Looking online or even with other mechanics I found parts to be over 600$ cheaper. When I arrive to drop off my car they were following the Covid requirements so I felt safe. They kept themselves safe as well. The receptionist was very knowledgeable and polite. I recently (April'21) had to address an emissions problem light on my dashboard. My initial thought was a bad sensor that needed to be replaced. So I took my 2015 Acura MDX to COHO for evaluation/repair. From their testing COHO was quickly able to identify not only a bad sensor, but also confirmed a bad catalytic convertor. Instead of COHO pushing to conduct the repairs/replacement themselves, they indicated that the catalytic converter was still covered under the emissions system warranty. COHO indicated that if I would take my SUV to the Acura dealership, I could easily save approximately $1,500 via the existing warranty, rather than incur the full repair cost if COHO did the work. Needless to say it was an easy decision to take my vehicle to the Acura dealership. NOTE: The ACURA dealership was going to charge me ~$1600 for the repairs, until I brought up the emissions warranty coverage... (OH, YOU'RE RIGHT... THE VEHICLE EMSSION SYSTEM IS STILL COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY). Warranty repairs were completed after 3 days in ACURA shop (lack of parts?). It always a breath of fresh air for COHO to continue to provide customer-oriented and honest options/recommendations/servicing. COHO has and will continue to be my #1 go-to automotive technician. I've spread the word to both family and friends! FINAL NOTE: COHO has satisfactorily serviced my previous vehicles (Lexus GS400'00, Porsche Boxster S'01, Acura MDX'02 and '15). They did the inspection, got back with me on the work that needed to be done in order to pass the inspection and then providing excellent service in preparing my car to pass the state inspection. I've got a BMW M3 and I refuse to take my car to a dealership. In fact I generally do my own work unless I just don't have the tools to do the job. In the past I've always gone to RRT in Sterling but recently found Coho conveniently located just a few miles from my house. I called Coho on short notice on day I had off work, hoping to be able to get a troublesome bolt under the exhaust manifold replaced. Chris was able to get me in an out within hours. To my delight, the shop was immaculate and both Chris and technician Dan were extremely knowledgable. They have an open and clean lobby with new chairs and a television for those who want to wait. Chris and I talked about cars and our history on the track. I felt comfortable leaving my car in their hands and I won't hesitate to bring my car back. read more

Let me start off with the positives. I called them earlier in the day and spoke with Jim, he was very professional, kind, and understanding of my needs. I called to get a simple job done, I just needed some tires dismounted from my rims, and i did not want the rims damaged at all since they were brand new. Jim ensured that the wheels would not be damaged and I could even stand and watch while they did the job, amazing I thought, this is perfect! So i took off during lunch (work day mind you), get to the shop 20 min later and notice that its very clean, spacious, the whole team was kind, I was offered a drink, just overall pleasant. Other shops wanted to charge $100, or $80 for this, Coho was going to charge $60 and said it wouldnt take too long. I get there and they notice the tires are runflats, which I didnt believe would have made a difference, but I now know that they do. Jim mentioned that runflats take longer to dismount and that the charge will actually be $110, just to dismount the tires from the wheels. Mind you, I was NOT getting the wheels and tires mounted and balanced, just dismounted. I was shocked. I decided to pass and call up Mach V, which has a touchless tire machine and charges $50 for 4 wheels to dismount. I've read good reviews, and my friends had positive experiences with this shop, but i left with a bad taste in my mouth. They did not honor their original $60 price quote and I left dissatisfied. All in all, they seemed like good, trustworthy and kind individuals who do good work, but given the amount of shops in the area, it is unlikely that i will return back here. read more

Although the news was bad ($2,000 for a new compressor and other issues), the service was awesome. They had a garage full of cars, and they still managed to squeeze me in on my day off. I went to another mechanic in Manassas, and they told me the problem with my Cadillac is the transmission. I really doubt that he ever checked out, and I decided to get a second opinion. Luckily looking at the reviews of Coho automotive I found their website based upon their fantastic reviews. I talked to the service guy in the city to check out my front-end problem on my Cadillac and get back to me in a day or two. Well, the next day they called and had done an extensive amount of research about the problem of my Cadillac and said that this is an inherent problem for my year of my Cadillac. I'm not a mechanic they could've charged me who knows what. But the story is they found that there is no problem with my car charging about $40, and said there's nothing to worry about. I think God for this great mechanic and Coho automotive. Very honest people, so many mechanics want to rip you off, I can't say enough good words about this company and I will be using them for many years. If you live in Manassas in surrounding areas I cannot recommend more highly than the professionalism that this company provided me. I'm new to the area and found this place with the help of fellow Yelper's "thanks everybody". I can't compare them to any other local shop because this is the only one I need. They do it all, technical, customer service, communication, and follow up. I was making a long highway drive in a week and wanted an oil change. I went into the showroom the intent of telling them Oil Change!, nothing else..! They did the cursory XX Point Inspection and found some things, legit things that I wouldn't want to be in the road with. They listed them all and prioritized them and left it to me what I wanted done. I did most it and was glad I did, and the quality of the work and the right amount of communication were perfect. By the way, the repair bay looks like an operating room and everyone is friendly and genuinely concerned with your experience. This is a great shop and I would drive a hundred miles for service here. There are 2 people I expect absolute trust in, a Doctor and a mechanic, these guys have their own hippocratic oath. Amazing, friendly, informative service. Not only was the service great, they invited me to come back for other solutions (I had a tire replaced because Lord knows what object from hell was on Route 6 at 5am) if my tires experienced any vibrating because my rim took a hit. It's also the little things too, Jim showed me where the #2 room was located along with snacks and on the house coffee. Terry (the technician and best slap of the bass mon) performed great, snappy service on the tire.
