This is the second time I've visited Portland and had the pleasure of eating at CoKiea's Kitchen! I specifically went to The Heist where she's located to eat! Once again, the food did not disappoint. I had the chicken and waffles which are oyster mushrooms fried to perfection and seasoned oh so well! And I also got an everything bagel breakfast sandwich which I almost bit my hand eating . I truly wish I'd gotten two of these! The service is amazing and it's always on point. Ms. CoKiea has always been there each time I've gone and I appreciate that. You can tell she takes pride in the food she makes and the service she provides. Being a vegan, I appreciate that she serves good well seasoned food. Do yourself a favor and check her out. This food is So Good! Even if you're not vegan (I'm not) check it out! My favorites are their fried chicken and meatloaf. Favorite sides are greens and fried ocra. When they're busy it can take a bit to get your food because they're cooking it up fresh, in real time. It's worth the wait! Super friendly staff. I've found my favorite food in Portland. I've recently revisited the vegan diet and have been cooking at home but am tired of cooking so I looked up some vegan food spots and this was my first choice to try. I got my mind blown as well as my tastebuds. I had the pleasure to chat with Cokiea while she was preparing my food. She is incredibly passionate about her cooking and it definitely shows. I got takeout and was so excited as the garlic bread was smelling DELICIOUS on my drive home! I wanted comfort food and comfort is what I got! I will definitely be returning regularly! Food was tasty, doesn't taste vegan, the flavors were well layered and thought out. I did end up having to wait an extra 10-15 minutes on top of the probably 15-20 minutes for her to make my meal, while she processed handing out three orders ahead of me just to place my order. Both the food and the customer service was absolutely amazing. I would sell my soul for the bean recipe. Everything was incredible. I will absolutely be going back. I live up on Mount Hood so when I do go into Portland, I really try to be particular where I eat because I don't get as many opportunities as I would like. This will definitely be one of my go to meals. It says a lot because my go to is always fresh ramen, sushi, or Thai food. The one time I came here I had the burger and the peach cobbler, both were delicious! If she can make a regular beyond burger take like that I know her own cooked meals are delicious. Hands down the best vegetarian food I've ever eaten, if not some of the best food in general I've ever eaten. OMG, the tacos. Seriously, a next level above anything I've had, period. 'Twas the day before Christmas ... and I was looking for lunch after having a latte at J Vein Caffé. I asked about the little yellow cart 2 door down and he told me that everything was AWESOME. I went over and started to order, and then the spirit of tacos past seemed to take hold of me and I decided to order up 10 tacos and a couple sides each of the barracho beans and the rice so I could bring it all back to the cart and share it with folks hanging out there with JJ. Now, a warning that the meticulous care she puts into things means it took a little longer than some, not a lot, but noticeable... but oh my gawd, sweet chocolate baby Jesus on a stick... it was SO worth it. The Jackfruit carnitas, along with the super-tasty taco sauce (creamy habanero?) were just ridiculously flavorful! There was absolutely nothing in the mouthfeel or flavor that would have made me think it was anything other than carnitas, but the other ingredients and the sauce just created an absolute flavor bomb that really made all 4 of us grin, say "Wow!" and so much more. Even JJ, with his ever so delicate and discerning palate, just loved them too. And then, the pastor... I had been concerned... I mean how can diced mushrooms actually taste like really pastor? Well, cluck a duck, these tasted like they had just been sheared off a trompo after being lovingly caressed by a blazing torch. We were all in wonderment as to how you could create something from mushrooms that had the right char, complemented by pineapple (as is appropriate) other fillings and more of the salsa to taste... no, not as good as a street taco from a vendor in Mexico, but something far more flavorful and interesting. Wow! So good! But wait, there's more... Really? After all that, I'm going to rave now about the rice and beans? Yep. Seriously awesome. The rice, I think, had been made with stock instead of just water and then also I think saffron and was full of flavor and moist. The beans were spectacular, super flavorful, some of the best I've had, a treat in themselves. My new year's resolution is going to be to eat more here whenever I can! Picture this: a small diner in a courtyard off Royal Street in New Orleans, nestled between an antique shop and a witch's charm shop, serving the best in vegan southern fare. That's this place, but in a food truck off the most confusing Sandy Blvd, nestled between a momo joint and a falafel stop. Guaranteed good southern food! The wait was long but well worth it. We had the lasagna which came out piping hot. The cheese layers and the portion sizing were perfect for a real experience of cheesy goodness. It came with a garden salad with raspberry vinaigrette, which was fantabulous! Even the garlic bread was gimme more. We tried two orders of the Mac and Cheese. That was comfort food at its best! And to take our salt levels to the highest heavens, we had the gumbo with a side of okra. Fried okra! You can't get much more southern than that. The gumbo took me to a Louisiana kind of day. The owner is the sweetest and nicest lady and the dishes we ordered were ok. (Vegan Tamales and Potato Taco's) Of particular note the servings are VERY large (3 HUGE tamales along with beans and rice) were included in my order and my friend also was served 3 large tacos along with sides in her order. The only thing that missed the mark was the sweet potato pie. It was rubbery and not too tasty. I think next time I am in Portland I will try the Cobbler here instead. I saw this truck after I had already ordered a big meal at another truck, but I could not pass up Vegan soul food. I tried a side of their Mac and Cheeze and it DID NOT disappoint. It wasn't like those dishes made with overly processed vegan cheese. It was packed with so much flavor and it was perfectly balanced. You can tell it was made with so much intention and care. She didn't want to talk about the food and didn't want to engage with me as a customer. The side was $6 - i gave her $10 - she gave me a $2 bill and said, "I don't have anymore change". Asked for the cash back and put it on a card- because WHAT?! In the short span of 10 mins, she took EVERY OPPORTUNITY to be abrasive and rude. Folks will say she was having a bad day, but I watched the nicest person serve the person in front of me. So the vitriol coming from her was SUPER unexpected and confusing.
