This place is beautiful! I was planning on ordering food to go, but all the plants and natural lighting and friendly atmosphere changed my mind and I stayed. The food was so good it made my day; adding tempeh to the mighty bowl with the garlic and tahini sauce is so good. 10/10 recommend. The real reason I came to write this review though is because staff is super sweet and genuine. It was my first time coming here, and I had a lot of questions about the menu to the point where I could feel myself becoming annoying (face palm). The gal taking my order was Jessi, she was so helpful, kind, knowledgeable, accommodating, and authentically friendly. I can't remember what it was that we shared a laugh about, but I walked away happy because of that type of simple interaction that restores your faith in humanity. People who have never worked in the service industry are generally clueless and walk into a restaurants like it's their first day on earth. But even with my string of annoying questions, she never once made me feel like I was being a nuisance. Whoever is in charge here you should give Jessi a raise. UPDATE: Harlow responded that my items were picked up over an hour after ordering. This is not true. I ordered for pickup myself and picked up less than 10minutes After I placed the PU order. That's the whole reason I said they were "exceptionally fast" in my original review. The ambiance was cool and the service was exceptionally fast. Unfortunately both items I ordered were gross. I love chocolate and peanut butter together esp with coffee but their drink was inedible with an awful taste. Maybe they gave me almond butter by mistake. Woof I couldn't even force it down. The quesadilla was incredibly greasy and nothing like a quesadilla. The mouth feel of the walnut chorizo with the soft vegetables was weird / it felt gritty. The flavors fell as well. The only highlight was the salsa but I'm 90% sure it was salsa de welo which you can buy at a store. No one would finish my quesadillas at the table. Major miss for me. Portion sizes were generous. The Hubs had the biscuits & gravy and added scrambled eggs, which comes with roasted veggies, and he took half home. I had the Beet Reuben with the soup of the day, and it was quite good. My only suggestion would be to change the bread on the Rueben to regular gluten-free sandwich bread because with the gluten-free hoagie bread it's served on, when you bite into it the bread is so dense the beets & cheese & sauerkraut are so slippery it all just slides out the side. It was yummy, but impossible to eat without a mess and I ended up eating the filling with a fork and left half the hoagie roll. This was a really cute vegan restaurant in a very nice area in Portland. I love the patio seating and the food was really good. If you're not much into vegan food, it may be something to get used to. The flavors are fresh and pretty unique. We tried the walnut pancakes, they were big & good but they do have a cinnamon & ginger flavor, tastes a little like carrot cake. We also tried the biscuits, which were good but a little harder in texture than expected but they were vegan so that's typical. We also tried the chili, which we thought it'll be a soup but it's more like a veggie bowl. We also tried the vegan pesto grilled cheese, which was really good, my favorite and it came with a Russian soup (forgot the name) with beets and tasted like chicken soup but it looked very different than what one may be expected to see. Wha happen? Oh how the mighty have fallen. This place used to be a very good fresh food juice bar restaurant. It was always very expensive but you assumed you were paying for the wit and expertise of the chef and sourcing of clean and local ingredients. Not anymore from what I can tell. Really like the new location and vibe of Harlow. They have taken over the former space of Xico, which offers a cute large back patio, plenty of space to relax with a book or laptop or friend. My favorite is the tempeh bowl with cashew cream and steamed kale - always comforting. They do a great gluten free toast with jam too! Mushroom Stroganoff is off the menu at Harlow and I am in mourning. The chive biscuits remain tasty with a hit of spice and their vegan walnut chorizo quesadillas are flavorful and delicious, served in a gluten-free tortilla filled with walnut chorizo, vegan cheddar cheese, roasted pepper, onion, butternut squash and excellent salsa. Their seasonal vegan pasta dish with spinach, mushrooms and walnuts however, was quite bland and a reminder than we cannot live off our food memories. RIP mushroom stroganoff --you are missed! I've been to Harlow a few times; both locations, and I'm never impressed with the staff who take orders. Unfortunately, I get the feeling that they really don't want to be there. That being said, the establishment is always clean, the coffee good, the smoothies I've tried are delicious, and their food is good. With so many restaurants that have vegan options in Portland, I'd probably not go out of my way next time to venture to Harlows. read more

The food wasn't really my preference. While it was filling it definitely wanted one of my favorite meals. My wrap was also on the over salted side. The soup was pretty good though and worked with the cold rainy weather. Even though I don't think this place was my favorite by far, I feel like I should come back another time and try one of their bowls (other people seemed to have ordered those instead so I might like those better). I will say if you are a people that is vegan/vegetarian it is a pretty good option though. The staff were kind and helpful. All the plant decor lighting created a cozy ambiance so it's a cute hang out spot. I hadn't been here in several years and we only had smoothies that time, so an update is definitely past due. I met a couple of friends here on a Saturday morning and was pleasantly surprised to see it not super busy. The interior of Harlow is super inviting with loads of green plants and dark wood. Service was super friendly and polite. They were also playing really happy music, very pop, upbeat, dance-able. I decided to try the pesto grilled cheese sandwich with veggie soup as as side. At first, the veggie soup seemed a bit bland, but once I added salt and pepper, it was quite delicious! The grilled cheese, while not your grandma's buttery grill cheese, was very tasty and much healthier. It looked like a small portion of food, but was actually just right. One of my friends got the grilled cheese with the chili as her side. I tasted the chili and it was really, really delicious! Next time I would get that. Our other friend had the coconut yogurt with granola and fresh fruit. Yes, I also tasted that and it was really good. The granola was stellar! I love that Harlow is gluten free, and while I'm not vegan, I'm trying to eat more healthily. We will definitely be back!! read more

Honestly the only reason I'm docking a star is because they don't have espresso! I know it's kind of picky but they are known for brunch and breakfast and it just feels wrong to not be able to have a regular latte when having brunch! They do have black coffee and lots of other fun wellness type drinks. Really good smoothies and juices too! I've only been once and I got the farmers scramble which was awesome and I also got the juice with carrot apple and orange (also great). There's not really service per se, you order at the counter and bus your own tables. See my breakdown below: 3/5 - Hawthorne Mac + Pesto: made with gluten free organic pasta, kale, Daiya cheese, garlic, rice milk, almond parmesan & house spice blend. Honestly it was kind of a mediocre mac and cheese that had some potential, but lacked any real flavor outside of some pesto. Even adding some black pepper did little to enhance it, I don't even want to imagine what it would have been like without the pesto. 4/5 - Walnut Chorizo Quesadilla: large gluten free tortilla filled with walnut chorizo, vegan cheddar cheese, roasted peppers, sweet onions, butternut squash & topped with jalapeño cashew cream sauce, green onions & cilantro. This was pretty good, but it just missed the mark with some obnoxiously large chunks of butternut squash, which took away from the texture and flavor of the otherwise really tasty quesadilla. Harlowe has two locations in Portland, and they're a great option for anyone looking for clean eating and a friendly staff. I appreciated the amount of dairy-free, gluten-free, and cane-sugar-free menu items they had available. From their green juice section, I went with The Rita, which includes celery, cucumber, spinach, kale, parsley, mint, & lime. To order it, I made the joke "I'll have the Margarita, hold the Marg" and the staff seemed to really enjoy it, or at least they were polite enough to make me feel like my joke was funny. The East Side location we went to on SE Hawthorne had large windows, beautiful green plants, and plenty of comfortable indoor seating options. Line can get long, but its worth having patience to dine here. The interior is spacious with various sized tables: a couple of bar tops in the store-front windows, two-tops, four-tops, and a handful of community style tables. On the yummy food. So far I've tried: Biscuits and Gravy with Market Vegetables: W O W! I've only made my own vegan biscuits and gravy before (and I wouldn't dare try someone else's), Buuuutttttt, I'm so glad I gave this a try. The biscuit is so airy and light, hard to believe it's GF. The gravy was flavorful and there was plenty of it! I loved that the biscuit was toasted because it adds a depth to the flavor. The dish itself is huge. Could easily be shared. The veggies that came with it were excellent, prepared perfectly. I would definitely get this dish again. Farmers Vegetable Scramble: Opted for the Smokey tempeh and quinoa. I loved the sauce on the tempeh, it literally lit my eyes open the second it hit my mouth. The potatoes, squash and sweet potatoes were excellent and the spinach and kale abundant. I was most impressed with the true serving size of quinoa... I feel like most places over-load plates with grains, but not at Harlow, this dish is perfectly balanced. The chipotle hollandaise is a cold sauce without much chipotle flavor (IMO), but tbh you don't even need the sauce for the plate because the Smokey tempeh is good enough! Again, another dish you could easily share. Side salad: perfectly sized with very fresh and crips lettuces. Shaved carrots and beets. The sunflower seeds add a perfect touch of crunch. The lemon ginger dressing is to die for. I wanted to drink it. Organic Mixed Garden Greens Salad: Same as side salad (but large version has + hemp seeds), but ordered this as an entree. As fresh and crisp as I had previously in the side salad version. This time I added a side of smokey tempeh and jackfruit. Again, that BBQ style sauce on the Smokey Tempeh is finger licking good. The jackfruit does not have a sauce, but is excellently seasoned. Portland is blessed to have such a wonderful healthy place to dine! TLDR: 10/10 recommend. I feel like there's something for everybody at a spot like this. Harlow is lovely. The ambiance is so cozy and warm, with lots of plants and homey decor. The menu has LOTS of options for food and beverages, aside from the drinks they have in their fridges by the front counter. Harlow is a great place to Meet up with old friends but maybe not so great to actually eat. Once again, a no frills kind of place with absolutely no service while expecting a healthy tip. Order at the counter and bus your own table. The only thing we got from them here was delivering the food to the table. I decided on a breakfast that included poached eggs which were poached hard and to top it all off, served cold. Stone cold, ice cold, brick cold. The coffee was also cold, not exactly being what you want when it's chilly. No half & half either. I realize it's a vegetarian restaurant but if you can serve eggs you can give me half & half for my coffee. Nice atmosphere but that's about all the good I can say for it right now.
