Experience: I visited Top Burmese for dinner with a friend and was thoroughly impressed by the entire experience. This was both of our first times. I am vegan while my friend is not and we had no struggle finding options that suited our needs. What stood out: Service: The staff was knowledgable and checked in on us frequently. Our food only took about 20 minutes to come out despite a busy dinner rush and we were offered chili flakes to spice up our curries. was incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. Food: For the table, we ordered the samosas which were perfectly flaky and filled with fresh veggies. I ordered the ruby garden non alcoholic beverage as well as the tofu curry with coconut rice. Every bite and drink of what I ordered tasted unique and made with intention. The samosas were incredible dipped into what tasted like a sweet and sour chili sauce. My tofu curry and coconut rice had a delightful blend of textures and tasted like no other curry I have ever had before. Ambiance: The atmosphere is so cozy with Burmese decor alongside dim lighting. After hearing that Top Burmese was ranked in the top 50 independent restaurants in a magazine, I was super stoked to check it out. It was also a quick walk from our Airbnb so even better! I will start off with saying that our service was impeccable. I forgot the name of our server but she was on top of everything, had great suggestions, and overall made sure we had a great time there. Kudos to her! The food left a lot to be desired. The Nangyi noodles were very soft as opposed to a nice chewy texture that we've had at other Burmese restaurants. The flavor overall was a bit bland as well. The lamb dish (I forgot exactly what it is called and it is not listed on the menu online) was very tasty with a good portion of lamb. It reminded me of a non-spicy lamb vindaloo. No complaints there. The green tea leaf salad was very tasty especially considering it has no protein in it. I think it would fit better as a shared dish as opposed to an entree. The prices were definitely a bit on the steeper side but I didn't feel like it was overpriced. The indoor seating is a bit quaint but there is also outdoor seating if the weather is nice! read more

Profoundly disappointing. Both food and service. Arrived and were seated as the first table of dinner service. Cute spot in a great neighborhood. Had a pleasant greeting and informed our server that we were in absolutely no hurry. Ordered drinks, apps and entrees and a to go order for the kiddo at home. That's the good part. Drinks arrive. The Wisdom Tea is just awful. The menu says apple cider, not apple cider vinegar. Belch! Especially when you don't expect it! The tea leaf salad is usually the crowning jewel of a Burmese place, and this one LOOKED the part. But sadly, the iceberg lettuce had that gross "salad in a bag" flavor that was so strong it cut thru the fermented tea leaves! Oof! Although we specifically requested that our meal be paced out, in a heartbeat our tiny table was inundated with literally everything we ordered all at the same time. At this point there were four occupied tables so we were patient but felt rushed. The place was only half full. The bread and dip was very good. The lamb special was aromatic and good, but that same plastic bag taste of the shredded carrots overtook that dish as well. Then with all those dishes on the table, the server brings out the to go order and piles it on. Also drops off the dessert menu. We order dessert, the table is a mess and she brings the check! We finally ask for some plates to be cleared, and while doing so the server asks if the check is ready to go! I have never been rushed to pay the bill before the entire order has made it out to the table! Mediocre food and a major miss on the service. This is a do not return for me. read more

Amazing fish noodle soup I've ever had! We ordered: - Green Tea Leaf Salad with tofu: It was just excellent! The dressing was light and refreshing, and the Burmese tofu was so tasty. - Moh Hinga (Fish Chowder Soup): This is the best! My son ordered this noodle soup, and it was amazing! It had thick fish broth (no fishy!), noodles that were so good, and was topped with fried fish chunks, sliced eggs, and lime-perfect harmony! It has a spicy side, and we loved it. Came here because of all the high reviews and was excited to have Burmese food again after a long time. Came in and it wasn't very busy and we decided to sit outside which was a nice place to sit. The menu was nicely laid out and we happen to come during happy hour. We ordered the tea leaf salad, which was about $12 during happy hour and got a couple of entrées one being the national dish a.k.a. the fish chowder dish and we also ended up getting the shan noodles. Tea leaf salad was not bad, but in my opinion, I've had much better. The fish chowder dish was very underwhelming, lack body, laity, and was just plain boring. I've had this dish before, so I have something to compare it to. I could make a dish better at home and honestly that makes me not wanna come back. The Sean noodles were described as a soup but was definitely not a soup. It seems like whatever seasoning they use they over, concentrated it, and therefore it was too strong and too overpowering that it pretty much messed up the balance of the whole dish. Service was and otherwise I would say this is not a great place to try Burmese food unless you've never had food and you're curious. I would not take that as true Burmese cuisine. Ambiance was not bad.... Due to the fact that we sat outside. Inside it looks like a bar/restaurant with seating. That is a little on the cramp side, but not terrible. read more

This restaurant is one of my favourites in Portland! The decor is unique and so relazing. Service is always very good. The outdoor seating is great for enjoying a good with of the boulevard and to accomodate for pets. Their food is exquisite! Very personal taste and always top notch. Wow! I decided to try this place after the Yelpies event features some samosas and salad from Top Burmese and that was a tantalizing teaser for me. I went with two girlfriends on a Sunday evening and was glad I had made a reservation; they only have around 5 to 7 tables and all were full during the time we were there. It seems they do a good take-out business too. We shared an order of samosas and the family feast of curries. We tried the beef curry, chicken curry and pumpkin curry. I couldn't pick a favorite - all were delicious! I especially loved the coconut rice. Our servers were always warm and prompt. This was probably only my 2nd time ever having Burmese food, and I have to say this spot is amazing. I tried their Moh Hinga, one of their signature dishes, and it did not disappoint. The soup was bursting with flavor and had just a hint of a kick. The noodles & fish were soft and fresh, and this dish just hit the spot, it felt like comfort food. The tea leaf salad was tasty & refreshing, and a great way to start out your meal. The somosas were also light, crispy, & tasty. Their dragon fruit whiskey sour was also really good. Our server was also super nice, turned out she came from Cali too. I have nothing bad to say about this place other than I wish I lived right next door to it. I was visiting from Utah for a quick weekend and my friend and I were looking to try something new when we stumbled upon this place after a quick jaunt through the Neighboring Trader Joe's. Oh my heavens this place was delicious. I can't stop thinking about it and wishing we had such food near my home. We started with the Gold Samosa which were hot, crispy, and well flavored. The accompanying sauce was good enough we kept tasting it after the samosas where gone. We then shared a bowl of Ohno Khao Soi. The staff was happy to allow us to share and brought a second bowl. The coconut curry sauce, that is served separately to pour over the noodles, was incredible. It was well flavored and thick. Again we kept tasting it long after the noodles were gone. Amongst all the positive, glowing reviews, I'm sad to report my food experience at Top Burmese was underwhelming. I came for lunch on a Friday and it wasn't busy at all so there was no wait. The inside atmosphere was bright and fun. As for the food and drink, the mango lassi was heavy on the milk and light on the mango puree. The green tea leaf salad, which appears to be a top ordered and loved item, was just okay. The texture and crunch of all the add-ins was enjoyable, however there wasn't much else going on in terms of flavor. For my main I got the Nangyi noodle salad. On the menu, it was supposed to come with eggs, garlic and tamarind and what I got was cold noodles with tomatoes and red onion. It honestly was reminiscent of eating spaghetti with tomato sauce cold (not the best). For dessert I got a free piece of Burmese style cake(it was my birthday), which was nutty and lightly sweet in flavor. read more

This is not a spicy curry so enjoying the rich favor of spices is easy to do. I added a drink to my order and was extremely pleased with the Burma Blue. We were really disappointed overall by this experience. It was telling that on a Friday evening, the place was empty. We arrived around 5:30, and outside of a few to-go orders, no one else arrived. I'll say the servers were nice but not very attentive. While the restaurant looks nice on pictures, there was a strange smell, like an old building smell when we walked in. For the food, it was a let down. We ordered the chicken and beef curries and both were lacking flavor while also being extremely salty. They were extremely oily as well. I think having some sort of acid would have helped. We had the Paratha and dip and it was obvious they were from frozen. They had the frozen food flavor. You know the flavor. The food here is really good! We started with the golden samosas, a must get IMO. The tofu tots are also great. The rainbow salad is excellent as well. For entrees I'd say it's best to grab several and then share. The coconut noodle soup is very tasty. We also ordered the chicken curry and the beef paratha. Make sure to get extra coconut rice too! The service was excellent though I'd recommend getting a reservation (especially on the weekend) as it's a pretty small space and can get very busy. They let us grab a drink and wait inside their cozy and colorful indoor space. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We ordered the following: Tropical drink in whole coconut Paratha Dip (vegan) $12 Beef curry $18 Tofu curry $19 Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the drink, but it was fruity yet strong, and served in a whole coconut. We enjoyed the coconut meat as well. The multi-layered paratha rotis were light and flaky and served with a creamy curry dip. There was a pickled side sauce in a 1oz cup. Honestly, it seemed pretty skimpy at first until the taste test ~ spicy hot! Could not even finish 1/2 an ounce of it. The ginthoke salad here was sooooOOOOOOooooo good. It's shocking to learn it's vegan. Not the ginger salad you might expect. It has that umami deliciousness from a fermentation type flavor. Huge portion size and absolutely delectable balance of acidic, salty, sweet, umami, and more. The texture is also perfect. Crunchy and fatty and smooth all at once. It says a lot that, as a Eugene resident, I went to Top Burmese twice in the past month when swinging through town for the Portland airport. But be aware: this location on 21st, with the tiny seating area, is MUCH BETTER than the Burma Joy location on 23rd St. Burma Joy is bigger and swankier, good for large gatherings. The 23rd street spot has a similar menu, but not identical, and the food is not nearly as good. I'll write a separate review for that location... For vegans and vegetarians, this place rules. The "shoo share" tea leaf salad was delicious, and quite spicy (get the regular tea leaf salad if you want mild). The Ohno Khao Soi is my favorite. Delicious coconut broth and homemade noodles. Simple dish, without too many different flavors, but just delicious. Homemade chickpea tofu. Pan-toasted paratha is also a must. Warm, flaky, perfect texture. Service was fast, but be aware that dining area is small. Outdoor seating is available in warmer weather. read more

Finally made it to Top Burmese! The restaurant is the perfect, cozy spot for a catch up lunch with a friend. The Green Tea salad is so vibrant and full of crunchy crispy textures and both the curry and coconut noodle soup were so warm and filling.
