St. Joseph's Day was this past Sunday. I went into Colarusso's hoping to find Zeppoles. Wouldn't you know it. There they were in the display case looking as if they were just taken from out back. I purchased two and they were fantastic. They brought me back to my youth when all zeppoles came from Modern in the North End. Extremely helpful and friendly service,I searched for bakeries near me for my Mother's birthday, Colarusso's had exactly what I needed and the girl behind the counter actually asked me if I wanted things done that I was about to ask for, that's a sign of good service right there IMO The Bakery felt very much like a place I would expect to find in my neighborhood of Bensonhurst/Dyker Heights or Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn. The quality of the Carrot Cake and the Cupcakes were outstanding. This was all for my mother's birthday, and I will just report that she was very happy and also again happy the day after her birthday enjoying another piece of the cake. I have been coming here for almost 10 years and I have never been disappointed! The Italian pastry pieces are huge and reasonably priced. The bread is a staple, must have! It's fresh made everyday and always delicious. My favorite is the strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. The staff is very helpful and friendly which is a plus. read more

My husband bought me what he thought would be a special birthday cake from this bakery. It was a small chocolate dream cake. It cost $22 and it tasted downright bad. It was dry and flavorless. My whole family loves sweets and none of us could eat it. I brought the cake back and told the girl working what happened and she told me the owner was on vacation but he would contact me. A few weeks went by and no phone call so I went in again and again was told by the staff person working that only the owner could do anything. It's been a month and I've pretty much accepted that I am never getting refunded my money. Next time I'll just stick to stop and shop honestly their cakes are way cheaper and delicious. read more

I take pastry very seriously. Which is why I am SO glad to finally know about this great bakery! I had driven past this place and its unassuming store front many times, expecting the usual, i.e., stale and uninspired assortment of Italian American pastries. How wrong I was!! In December, my husband brought me an individual-sized fruit tart from Colarusso's that was simply beautiful and tasted as if it had been prepared only hours ago. Since then, I have been back twice and EVERYTHING I tried so far tasted incredibly fresh. I love ricotta-filled sfogliatelle but am usually put off by the rubbery or plastic-like texture of the outer shell... not at Colarusso's. Their sfogliatelle and lobster tails are perfect: incredibly crisp yet tender, with super fresh and delicious fillings. The Italian cookies and biscotti I've had so far were also extremely good and fresh tasting. Some of the reviews mentioned the Italian rum cake, which I had never tried before. I got a small piece and, while this particular type of cake won't be my new favorite, it too tasted extremely fresh and well-made. I haven't tried their bread yet, but the high quality of their pastries and cookies gives me hope that it won't be the usual soft, spongy, and practically crustless mess you get at too many other bakeries. Colarusso's has changed hands and so has the quality of the food..just came back from a disappointing experience ..tried the pastries and they are so bland it's sad..the bakery pizza looks like they freeze it then put it out the next day...to top it it off the older lady that served me sucks at customer service ,while i was placing an order she answered the phone and just walked away from me...i should have done the same..plus she gave me the wrong pastry in the bag i didn't notice till i got home... read more

Usually when people go to bakery's it's to get something for a celebration so you would think the people working there would be in better spirits. This place might be a great bakery, but I wouldn't know! They have a big sign on the building advertising bagels, so when I first moved to the area, I was psyched to try it out. I would rather go local then get bagels from a chain like Dunkin's. Well, apparently they do not sell bagels. This would be fine, I certainly love pastries, and could try something else, but the emplotees were so rude to us when we went in and asked about the bagels that we were stunned and left. They seemed downright shocked that we had the nerve to think they served bagels there. When my husband mentioned the sign, the woman said something like, "well, we haven't had bagels in years" with a bit of an attitude. I was in stoneham today - and decided to check out some bakeries; but, I only made it to Colarusso's. I really didn't need anything, but I had to stop. They are right on main street and not too far from 128, and there is a big parking lot. As I entered, you can tell this place is old school Italian. There are a lot of the traditional cookies along a back wall, there are cupcakes, decorated cookies, whole cakes and many more pastries to choose from - and yes they make bread, too (rolls, loaves, etc...). The retail space is big enough and there is an opening to the kitchen -- it looks massive. I figured I would try the cupcakes - I am not a fan of plain white bread or traditional butter cookies - and the other pastries were not familiar. I purchased an all vanilla and an all chocolate - there were different ones and the ones I chose were on the bottom and had the least amount of frosting. When I got home and took them out of the bag I also saw that on top of each cupcake was a tiny butterfly ring, too bad no kids to enjoy that added bonus. I dove into the all chocolate and the cake is SO LIGHT! It is one of the most delicate cakes I have tasted - kudos to the bakery! The frosting was good, not too sweet and was creamy, and pretty rich. I prefer a lighter frosting, and in this case it would have made this cupcake a 10! Later I tried the all vanilla, and the frosting had a hard shell on the outside, not sure what it is made out of, but since it is pure white I assume not butter. The cake was good, but the tight crumb and texture reminded more of a box mix, and not in a good way. I would recommend the chocolate cake with or without frosting. I hope that this cake is made from scratch, otherwise I would feel foolish. My star rating is simply based on one chocolate cupcake that was very tasty and if the vanilla was equally as good I would have given this place 5 stars.... Finally, I was shocked to find out that these two cupcakes only cost $1.70!!!! Most places you are lucky to find one cupcake for less than $3. read more

This small but well stocked Italian bakery is located just a moment off RT. 128. Inside it is not large or by any means fancy but the pastry all looks appealing and priced quite reasonable compared to other bakeries in the area. The staff was friendly , helpful and not pushy. "He was too busy for 5 minutes"! I went to the bakery yesterday afternoon, about 3pm, to inquire about a wedding cake. I was told by the one of the clerks to come back tomorrow morning, before 11 am, to see Michael, the baker. My daughter and I had 2 pictures to show them, which would have taken about 1 minute, then I just wanted a ballpark figure as to how much it may cost, which would have taken about 3 minutes. I needed literally 5 minutes of this man's time. The same clerk that told me to come back "tomorrow", came out only to tell me that "he was too busy to see me and that she could help me." This is the same girl that told me to speak directly with the baker. She gave me the day and time frame, which I respected. Unfortunately, because he wouldn't give me 5 minutes of his time, we will be going to another bakery. I do believe everything happens for a reason, so good luck to me! NEVER going back again!!! I've been using this bakery for years and years. I needed round twelve 10" seeded breads to make muffalettas for a Mardi Party. I called three places including Market Basket. No one was willing to do it. When I called Colarusso's, they said we'll try. TRY? They made the absolute perfect loaf of bread for a muffaletta. Unbelieveable! The chocolate obsession cake is the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten. This is the cake my group of girlfriends buy each other for our birthdays. Since the first time we tasted it, it became the girlfriend birthday cake. If you don't want an entire cake, the chocolate obsession cake wedges are the same to die for cake and frosting. Not sickening sweet and moist as hell. So freaking gooood. The other night for a family get together, my niece bought St Joseph's day zeppole and granted they are not the same zeppole my mother and aunts used to make, but for bakery zeppole they were like cream puff heaven on a plate. One last story... I send my English/Irish bf to buy a cake one Sunday morning and gave him strict instructions to buy anything but rum cake, because I never liked Italian rum cake. Rum cake was what the old timers always had for various relative's birthdays and I hated it, but they were all out of cakes and he ended up coming home with a rum cake and ironically even that rum cake was delicious after I gave him a hard time for buying the only cake I told him not to buy. Attempted to order a birthday cake that I've gotten there twice before. The picture is on their yelp page, which is the picture I usually show them. It's nothing more than a regular cake with four cannolis on top. The two girls working told me I couldn't get it because it's a "specialty cake" and they "wouldn't know what to charge me." Well that's unfortunate because like I said,I've gotten it twice there before. I told them I would buy a regular birthday cake and place the four cannolis on top of it myself but then thought why should I pay $40+ for a cake plus cannolis from this establishment when these girls could care less about making accommodations or actually calling their boss to figure out how to place a cake order. You're not Shaw's, you're a bakery which should be able to make specialty cakes, and there's also a picture on your yelp page so unfortunately you lost a very good customer. I will not be returning...the girls didn't even bother to take my name and number and see if they could accommodate such a "specialty cake." Low class establishment. read more

For over 20 Years I have been purchasing the pizza gana. Since the new owners took over the quality has declined, and the price has gone up. When I opened the one I bought today I was extremely disappointed, so I did something that I have never done before - I phoned them and brought the pizza gana back. I was told that they use 70% ricotta and 30% meat. This one did not show that ratio and the ricotta didn't have any flavor. They did not give me a new pizza gana and refused to refund my $27.99. After all these years I will no longer purchase a pizza gana there. read more

Ruin Birthday Plus! So, needed a Italian Cream cake w/fresh strawberries, had a sentimental meaning behind it, my farther who has passed away would get them for my birthday because I loved them as a kid, but, w/fresh strawberries. Called a few bakeries in the area, some wouldn't do the fresh berries, just the jam styled type, so when I called Colarusso's, they said no problem we could do it and the cake would be 31.00 dollars, a little pricey but I'm getting what I want so I pay plus 4 days before the 12 person BBQ/party so plenty of time.They take my name and number and I set a pickup between 3-4. Pickup the cake, go to BBQ, cut into it and it is strawberry jam sugary crap! So pissed off! Call them the next day and baker/guy says" yeah, sorry, we ran out of fresh strawberries and I made it like that so you would. at least. have something" I could have went to Market Basket and "had something" for 8 bucks! Why didn't I get a call??!! What are you? The cake boss? The cake sucked, the cream was wacked w/Cool Whip and tasted like sh@%! To ad insult to injury, I had to ask for a refund and he wouldn't even give it to me, he said "did you eat the cake?" really??!! We threw over half of it away in disgust! So, after pressing him, he says he'll give me half a credit in a gift cert., what a sport! UPDATE: Had to do a RT to Boston today so stopped by to burn through the gift cert., order a Bismarck and a cream puff and asked her if it was real cream, she looked at me with a dirty look and said yes! She lied, they are wacked w/CoolWhip too! Even MB uses all cream for half the price! Now, down the the end, she says that will be 13.80, I give her the gift cert.., she rolls her eyes and snidely says, 8 more dollars! She read it wrong and it said 15.00, then she say well, I can't give you any money! I told her to keep it, grab the junk I gave away and will never go back!!!
