It's in an old bank - from local sources I heard it used to have seating in the vault but they got rid of that, they should bring it back to bring an extra experience to getting ice cream. My favorite creation would have to be oatmeal cookie batter, two Oreos, and Carmel sauce! Although I could eat the scoop of ice cream alone the chocolatey crunch makes it even better. All I wanted was a peanut butter cup ice cream with cashews. What I got in my take-away order was a half-melted mess of cake and chocolate chips. This is disappointing because it isn't the first time I've received an incorrect order at this location. I wanted to trust you to get it right. You didn't. I can't recommend you to new visitors or old friends that expect their order to be right. Ordered a custom made cake for my fiancées birthday since she loves ice cream cake. Went to go pick it up, only to have to wait an extra 20 mins because they said the cake was drooping and they needed to fix it... fine. I can be reasonable, things happen. And then they changed the color of the cake from what I requested. Asked if they could make it white, since he couldn't save the original color? Added an additional 15 mins. $50 for a custom cake for it to not be ready when it's supposed to, not even the correct color, and no apology? No thanks. Terrible service. Went in about 20 minutes before close on a Saturday night asking if it would be reasonable to make a smoothie before close. The workers could have been honest about wanting to close up for the evening, but instead two of them lied about not having the milk and ice to make a smoothie, while another guy came racing in the room basically yelling at us and slamming the ice and milk (that the other two workers said they didn't have) on the table and saying, "you want me to make you a smoothie now?!" We were being cordial about the closing hours and they were flat out dishonest and rude towards us. My friend and I decided to make something at home instead and save some money. read more

Went in at 8:50, they close at 10. We stood there waiting for 10 minutes for someone tot ale our order. By the time someone came to take our order, it was 9:00. Well Cold Stone, what can I say about you? You're predictable and comforting, like an old pair of jeans. Consistent and steady, you know exactly what you're getting. Cold Stone wants to be the hip cool place to go, but there's just no overcoming the chain ice-cream store vibe and bright lights. Gimmicks like tipping the servers so they'll sing a jingle written by an LA composer specifically to promote their evident overwhelming joy at being allowed the privilege to serve you ice cream come off exactly as most other corporate gimmicks do: forced, unenthused, and weak. What do you expect when you get paid $8/hour to schlep ice cream? Oh, and the sizes are referred to as Like it, Love it, and Gotta Have It. It was cute for about 5 seconds. Maybe it's just my pet peeve when chains try to re-name the sizes of things, but I just don't see anything wrong with calling it Small, Medium, and Large. Having not been in in over a year, I was surprised to see their menu has expanded. Branching out into smoothies and various frozen drinks, as well as ice cream cakes. Cakes I get, but smoothies and drinks...well....you're an ice cream shop. Do one thing and do it really, really well. They've closed for long periods of time recently, so I was honestly surprised to see them re-open this spring. I guess winter is a surprise, not a planned event. All that said, some of their flavors and mixes are wonderfully good. I'm a fan of their Chocolate Devotion mix, chocolate ice cream, brownies, chocolate chips, and melted fudge. Simply delicious. Their birthday cake flavor is also particularly good. Cheap, consumable, decent ice cream, just don't expect any atmosphere. I love this Coldstone. They always have great seasonal flavors (I miss you Truffle fudge! Mojito! Salted caramel!) and the other delicious treats that they use to stay relevant year round like hot chocolate and fruit smoothies. This location in particular has a fantastic staff and super friendly owners. Sometimes it's hard to pick a chain store like this when you're in downtown Lawrence and surrounded by other cute interesting shops, but Coldstone Creamery is irrestible! read more

I've been to Cold Stone a few more times than usual lately, after we discovered that they have multiple sorbet offerings. One of my friends is lactose intolerant - Sylas & Maddy's sorbet presence is unpredictable, Three Spoons and Orange Leaf usually have one offering, but Cold Stone seems to have 3 or 4. For whatever reason Cold Stone usually leaves me feeling unsatisfied. The concept is great, but I feel like creating the perfect combination is hit or miss. A few times I've been wowed, other times, I know I made a mistake. They do have some interesting flavors such as blueberry muffin. There are some sundae-type treats that feature warm baked goods - don't get the funnel cake. I was so excited seeing this, having not had a funnel cake in forever. They microwave a small premade funnel cake, and it's just not delicious. Wait for the fair. Be careful with pricing - the prices listed are just for the ice cream, not the mix-ins. So if you order one of their signature combinations, don't forget to include the cost of mix-ins. The smallest size is fairly filling, I think I'd only go for a medium if I was really hungry, not as a dessert after a meal. The Rocky Mountain Chocolates at the store are an interesting additions. They have all kinds of chocolate goodies, from truffles to chocolate covered graham crackers. At $20-some a pound, it cost me $5+ for a Cashew Bear and a truffle. "Creamery" product is such poor quality they have to put all kind of candy, etc in it to disguise the crap quality of the main product. I noticed they don't call it "ice cream". Good thing. I am sure it is against all decency laws to call it ice cream. It is a "sugar and chemical mixture designed to taste remotely like ice cream and hoping you don't notice because you put all kind of candy and other stuff in it." Yuk!!! It is awful unless mixed. The fake sugary flavor is overboard. It is horrible stuff. This location had nice workers and were busy because the clientele is a bunch of college students who don't know what good ice cream should taste like. First time visit last night. My husband wanted a real chocolate malt. We headed to Cold Stone to see what they had. The server was super helpful, great customer service. When I wanted only a single dip in a small cup, she offered the kid size as an alternative. That was perfect for me! My husband ended up ordering a medium chocolate malt. They packed the ice cream in, it was so thick he had to spoon it out. He ate the whole thing! We talked to the servers while we waited. They were all friendly and so nice. Left happy - we will definitely be back. But not too often - I'm not sure my waistline can withstand it. :-) read more

Kids received a gift card from their grandmother for $15 for Cold Stone. I told my kids to go all out because I had been carrying around the gift card for a while and just wanted to use it up. After getting their ice cream which totaled up to about $17, I gave the cashier our gift card. She tries for several minutes getting it to work but could not, she said they just had a system update and she couldn't figure it out so she made a phone call. Kids were eating ice cream as we waited around for about 10 minutes. In the end she said sorry, I would have to use the gift card another day or at another location. She was apologetic, but I don't see why she couldn't take the gift card and charge me $2. If I had known they couldn't take the gift card I would never have gotten $17 of ice cream. 2 love-it sized ice creams with 3 mix-ins and one in a dipped waffle bowl still shouldn't be $17. You can buy high-quality ice cream by the pint at the grocery store for much much cheaper. I really was almost in tears, would have walked out without the ice cream but my kids had already started eating it while we waited. Never going there again, I will probably re-gift this gift card to someone I don't like. read more
