Been coming here for a while. One thing I really like about Cole is that because there isn't a big-box home improvement store in SF proper, there is potential to have the local places have some pretty inflated prices. Cole and most of the Ace hardware stores don't. They are reasonably priced, I've never felt as if I was truly being taken advantage of. Once I went there and saw a small cilantro plant. It was outside on the rack, and looking pretty sad. I figured it needed a good home. When I went inside to pay, the cashier agreed, and told me most of the smaller herb plants are in the same shape, and as long as I promise to give them a good home, I can have whatever I want for free. That was really nice. I took two chives, two basil, two oregano and a second cilantro, all of which are enjoying life now. Right on, Cole. read more

Since moving into "The City" and finding myself in frequent need of DIY supplies from keys, to plumbing supplies, to paint and tools, I can't imagine life without Cole Hardware, Polk Street. If you need it, they've most likely got it, and the friendly and readily available staff will gladly supply instructions and/or installation tips. This place is well worth any extra time it may take to get to their location, and the only drawback is finding street parking, especially around meal times as there are many restaurants in the area. Great place. We get all our hardware needs here. Had paint mixed the other day. The store on Polk, the only one I've been in, is a treasure trove of - well, everything!- stacked high to the rafters. The staff is always friendly and has a can-do attitude. My husband carries the little fob which offers discounts on his key ring. (you can also just give the clerk your phone number) On my most recent visit which was a few days ago, I checked in on Yelp and was surprised to receive an extra discount- five dollars off a $25 purchase. I moved to SF because of Cole Hardware! Cole Hardware is the epitome of the Have-Everything neigborhood store. Visiting a girl who lived in Russian hill for a couple weeks made me fall in love with the neighborhood feel of SF and Cole Hardware was part of that amazing feel! They literally have EVERYTHING, need an ironing board? They got it. A coupler for a pneumatic nail gun? They got it. The owner tells his employees to harass customers to hunt down anyone with a mask slightly below their nose.! This is what the employee told me he was asked to do and this employee wanted an argument and trouble with me! He didn't try to deescalate and I could tell calling the SFPD as a backup was on the table. This is insanity! There's no excuse for such stupidity! Believe me, when soylent green comes into view and your age limit comes up, millennials you did this too will be all for your new brand of fertilizer. read more

I have been trying to fix up my home on my own but I'm new at that sort of thing and do not always have to tools or I don't really have a good idea of how to go about fixing something. Each time I go to Cole Hardware, there is always someone who is happy to help me get everything I need and give me easy to understand instruction on how best to get the job done. The prices here seem reasonable and like I said, everyone is happy to help me. I recommend this place for those new and experienced in home repairments. read more

I am not really the hardware type but this store makes it as easy as possible to figure out how to do those household jobs! Plus, they have a really quirky selection of lights, plants, odds, and ends, so I always end up spending more time and money than I intend. But the goodies are always worth the price as I have become self-sufficient in many ways that I wasn't before. read more

There is NOTHING that I like better than power tools. I bought a power drill the other day just so I could screw things. Screwing rules! Anyway, not only can you get power tools and unpower tools, you can get tea kettles and plants and cute soap dishes. You can also get paint mixed for you. No reason to go to Colma and depot it up. I think it's great that the neighborhood has a true hardware store. I went in to get some lightbulbs and paint thinner, the gentleman brought me right down the isle and explained what each paint thinner does and for what purpose. A bit pricey compared to Brownie's just up on Polk, but you pay for it being so close. read more

Nothing but 5 stars for an independently owned hardward store in the middle of SF. A great selection of items for such a seemingly small space. We outfitted most of our kitchen remodel here.. Good service too. Have to do Home Depot sometimes but will always make an effort to hit here first. read more

Even though I live right by Fredericksen's Hardware on Fillmore/Union, I travel all the way to this store for all of my hardware needs. This store conveniently has always had everything I need in a pinch and it is in a great location. The employees are helpful and nice, also. read more
