I really do like coming here. I have brought friends and family here and they also feel the same way. The ice cream is good obviously but what I like are the unique flavors she has. This past holiday she had flavors such as pumpkin and egg nog. The prices are very reasonable You can get a filling lunch/dinner for under 10 dollars and being a college student looking to save money, that is very good The Monte Cristo is delicious as well as the Roast Beef and Swiss. Please clean the panini press. Customers can see you making sandwiches and can see that the panini press has never been cleaned. Even if customers could not see the press, believe it or not when you cook a sandwich in a panini press that has never been cleaned people can taste the burnt residue. It is something very simple that would make a huge difference. read more

Colleen's atmosphere and image is adorable. Their food is not. I had ice cream there one cool evening last fall. My fiances was fine. Mine wasn't frozen enough and wouldn't stay in the cone long enough for me to eat it. Splat. hw flavors were pretty basic and there wasn't really anything special about them. We've since moved into a house just 2 blocks away so will likely try it again this summer. Hopefully it will be better. Our second visit was more recent. Since we're new to the neighborhood and don't know the good bunch spots, we decided to go in here with a friend one Saturday morning. We should have looked more closely at the menu or asked more questions. Apparently the only actual cooking they do at Colleen's is with a panini press or a microwave. My brunch-mates both ordered eggs and I ordered a grilled cheese and soup. When the food came, it was disappointing. Microwaved eggs are tough and weird. The soup had been microwaved too and tasted like it was from a can. Even the toast wasn't toasted enough. The only thing yummy on our table was my grilled cheese (thank goodness, bc if they'd messed that up I think I'd have to give them a 1-star review!) Like I said above, we'll probably try the ice cream again. After all, who can resist an ice cream shop within walking distance on an 80 degree August night? Any ice cream parlor can be a recipe for disaster on a hot summer night. This place, no different. There were kids zipping around, no older people (who they seemed to belong to) caring much for the mayhem. The ice cream is good. The food, has not been outstanding, in my opinion. Ice cream is OK--nothing remarkable. Selection subpar. The decor is cool but they seem to think that decor makes up for lousy service. It doesn't. I don't know what it takes to get a smile from the weird assortment of kids/adults working the counter on a given night, but in 25+ visits in the last 18 months (it's right around the corner from our house) I've yet to experience anything more than a barely-audible "you're welcome" without any eye contact. Seriously, it's very odd, and remarkable. This place could be awesome in so many ways, and it just isn't. Tonight was the last straw. 9 pm on a Saturday and they were closed due to a power outage. I love that its a diner, making it into a chill place to grab ice cream, some coffee and pretend to be doing something other then eating the same thing while sitting on your own couch. The pistachio ice cream is pretty good. The blueberry crisp was more like a blueberry brick, with a yummy blueberry filling and a crust that takes some serious knife jabbing before a piece breaks off. My one major issue was I didn't realize there was more than one type of tea when i order and they gave me earl grey without asking me what tea I want. I live in Medford, and on a gorgeous day, happen to walk through Medford Square and found myself getting hungry. There are not many food options on downtown Medford, except within my visibility vicinity, so we decided to stop here seeing that their extensive menu could please anyone. I opted for the mozarella panini, while my bf had the chicken pesto panini. It didn't really taste like an authentic Italian panini, but nevertheless was tasty. It came with a bag of chips. I did notice a few people coming in and ordering ice cream, but didn't want any dessert. Solid sandwich place in Medford Square, and they also serve breakfast. I don't know Medford Square well, but I don't think there are all that many casual dining options. The good thing about this place is the menu is pretty extensive, there are wraps, paninis, sandwiches and soups, and there are vegetarian options and a kids menu. The food is not outstanding but it is solid. For example the corn chowder was not properly thickened so it was a little curdled, but still tasted good, the caprese panini had pesto, which I liked. They seem to shine in the dessert sphere. The brownies and whoopie pies are very good and they have a "cannoli sundae" which is an awesome concept, like a hot fudge sundae with chips of cannoli shells in it. (I wondered if the shells came from Modern pastry down the street?) They seem to make their own ice cream and you can buy it by the half gallon. It's an inexpensive option that is great if you have kids, thanks to the variety and the price. And the service was very friendly. read more

I'm not sure why this place has such low ratings - I've been going here for almost my entire life and I've NEVER had any issues. My family used to go here when it was Brigham's as well, which just goes to show how much of a staple Colleens is to Medford. Colleen's is the local hangout place for many a middle and high-schooler, so if you want to go in there on a Friday or Saturday evening, beware. On Sundays the church-going crowd meanders on in there and is considerably less loud than the high schoolers. Their food selection is basic but not untasty, and the ice cream selection is amaaaaazing! They have many ice cream and low-fat options available with a variety of toppings. Yes, the ice cream is scooped by teens, but throughout the years I have seen many of those teens working there time and time again, some for over 5 years. It's a laid back place to eat and work! I have never had an issue with my orders, teens working or no teens. They also have a bathroom and are very laid back about who uses it, and I can't say how many times this has saved me in a pinch! You really haven't lived until you turn around to head back to your seat after throwing something away and bump right into a small child with a huge ice cream cone. And then another. Well from what I have been told is that this place is going downhill and based on my experience it's true. We walked in and there was no line on a Saturday night and that should have been our first clue to turn around and walk out. The second clue was every table in the place was dirty. After the person in front of us had ordered the girls behind the counter looked at us and with an attitude as if we were infringing on her night by being there. I ordered a strawberry and ice cream drink that was supposed to be thick and it came out very runny. My father in law got an ice cream soda that was half full and as he says is an embarrasment to sodas everywhere. My mother in law got a mocha chip with cold "hot" fudge and marshmallow that seemed to be spooned right out of the jar so it was just a blob. My in laws have been coming here for years and I think this may have finally put the nail in he coffin for Colleens. The girls behind the counter had such bad attitudes that any other time I would have walked out but I wasn't driving so I didn't have that option. So much for this place. read more

Colleens was great. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato and a red velvet cookie. Bakery items and food is good. I am tired of yelp reviews. They tend to not to a place justice and people on yelp seem to be a lot more PICKY than people on tripadvisor and other sites. Maybe its the yuppie culture/snobby culture of today but its just wrong some of the reviews people write and give like 1 or 2 stars for petty things. I had great service at Colleens and the food was delicious. I haven't had the ice cream so can't review that but overall it was worth the 4 stars. it was a welcome place on a 6 mile hike I did along the Mystic Riverwalk...from Winchester/Medford line to Wellington. Recently had a blondie brownie sundae with vanilla and cookie dough ice-cream with hot fudge and nuts - DIVINE. I've been driving around Medford solidly for over 3 years now and the checkin I did was the first time I stopped here for something to eat. OK. lemme tell you...they know how to add vegetables to a tuna wrap. Name it and they put it in there! It was HUGE and super yummie. They have different flavors of wraps and they do sandwiches. We had a birthday party here recently. It was a great place to have it. They have a little room off the main area that kept the kids from running all over the place. The staff were very nice with the kids. While I was planning this party with the staff, I was only asked how many kids, and told that the minimum was 10, maximum was 22, and the parents either stand around, or if there is room, they sit out near the room. Their website says: "A minimum of 10 guests, any less and you will still be billed for 10 guests, maximum of 22 seated guests, parents may stand around in the room. " With the staff, as well as with the website, we understood that we were paying per child guest. In reality, you're actually paying per sundae, maxed out at 22 sundaes. Makes the bill much more exorbitant than what we were led to believe from the staff and website. read more

A cute, clean bakery/ice cream/ sandwich shop. The menu reminds me of Friendly's with a little bit of a Massachsetts Italian flair. I had escarole soup & a pesto-tomato-mozzarella panini for lunch. Neither were the best I've ever had (the soup was pretty salty, too much pesto on the sandwich) but not terrible either. It smells good inside and it is quiet (pop music playing but not too loud). I imagine this place gets louder in the Summer with kids coming in for ice cream. At least this time of year, would be a good spot to have a quick business meeting or do some studying. Some of the cookies are made on the premises, some come from David's Bakery. The ice cream is not made at the store but it is made with Colleen's recipes somewhere else in Massachusetts. The ingredient labels for the ice cream that I could see in the self serve freezer showed that the ice cream is made with corn syrup but it looks like it probably tastes good. The service was the best part, really quick & friendly! There are a few vegetarian options on the menu. Sustainable or locally sourced ingredients? Not evident if so. I'd love to see some. Eco-friendly packaging? Not sure. This is something else I look for in a business that I'm going to support regularly. read more

Come here for dessert and/or icecream. The apple crisp, sundays and icecream are definitely worth the trip. I'm really sad about having to write this review because my family and I have been going to Colleen's for years. I remember going here when it was a Brigham's as a child and since they've all but shut down Colleen's seems to be the only place around to get a classic Raspberry Lime Rickey. This evening however we didn't realize that dinner came with a show. While we were eating our dinner Colleen came in and she was upset. I guess one of her employees had decided to tell her that she was unable to work the next day. I understand how annoying that situation is especially since apparently Colleen was leaving for vacation. But I still thought it was highly inappropriate for her to browbeat 3 employees to get them to work for her without even a day's notice. It doesn't matter whether or not they asked for the day off, Colleen, you didn't schedule them so they made other plans. I'm sorry about your vacation plans, but that's the risk one takes when opening and running a small business. Also, I really appreciated the foul language Colleen was using behind the counter. Now I know they don't actually have a back room or an office to have these conversations in, but it would've been a lot more comfortable if they went into the party room area. It's at least not up close and personal with customers just trying to enjoy their dinner. We would've probably also ordered ice cream but at that point it was just so awkward that we had to leave. I hope those teenagers working there tonight get a better job and soon. They were nothing but polite to myself and my family and also to Colleen who was pretty rude to them in return. read more

Let me start out by saying that the water at Colleen's is out of this world! That being said, I had promised my kids ice cream after dinner tonight. We decided to try Colleen's b/c they serve food and ice cream. Since there are 6 of us, we ordered a variety of food including: grilled cheese with bacon, a salad, a grilled chicken sandwich, club sandwich and French onion soup. The food was mediocre at best. The French onion soup was terrible! Not to mention, that the food came out at different times. We chose not to get ice cream there as the food was not good and one scoop of ice cream was close to $3.00. Long story short, it was overpriced and we were underwhelmed. Stop here. It's not too late, because it's all smoke and mirrors, so let me break it down for you as to why Colleen's is terrible. The food is quite simply, not very good. If you are going to pay for food, or in the case of Colleen's, overpriced food, than it should be tasty, right? I mean at the very least, I shouldn't be able to find better food in a gas station, or make something better myself. Well here you get both. The staff, although nice, are a bunch of kids that don't know what they are doing and clearly never have had a job before. Food prep is done without gloves, which to some is okay, to others is disgusting. Their hands are not washed, at least not since the last time they scratched their faces or were wiping down the counter. Also, they forgot my food. I ordered in an empty restaurant. People kept coming in and out getting ice cream after my order. Cashier was very attentive to them, but forgot about my food. After 20 minutes of not getting my sandwich, the cashier looks over at me, realizes she forgot to put in my order, and walks over to tell a coworker to make my food. It's done in a few minutes. Definitely love Colleen's and have been coming her for many years. Their classic mac and cheese has always been a favorite of mine along with many other people in my family. They recently changed their recipe to a fancier more "gormet" recipe.
