We paid $500 + tip for two people to do a job that the two of us could NEVER have done on our own. We moved from a 5th floor walk up to a 3rd floor walkup, from a large 1br apartment with a lot of stuff to a brownstone with tiny hallways and a crooked staircase. My boyfriend had overstuffed and poorly packed our extra large boxes so much that they were not only too big for anyone to carry, but also heavy as #$%@. I found out later that things were literally falling out the bottom as they moved them out. Despite this, they were somehow able to rescue everything and made sure it arrived to the new place safely. They were also remarkably able to carry several boxes that were lined SOLID with extremely heavy med school textbooks. The moral of the story: my boyfriend is not an excellent packer, but these guys are excellent movers. To pay it forward I definitely recommend you pack better than we did... **They also brought along a fresh roll of TP which we later found in our new bathroom! Long story short, the movers did not come when they were supposed to and only told me at the very last minute that they couldn't make it for one excuse or another. Desperate to move, I had to wake up at 7am the next day so that they would/could fit me in their schedule (i.e., before their 1st shift) even though it was their fault to begin with. Also, the fixed-fee pricing didn't make sense to me. I don't think you pay any less or more with this kinda pricing (vs hourly charge). As a matter of fact, because they came in the day after they were supposed to come, I had moved some large items myself in a cab so technically they should've charged me less for the move. The movers didn't really check if the items in my quote were the same as the items actually moved. As a last note, I just wanna clarify that while the management sucked big time, the movers were great. (So don't fire them!) They looked like scrawny college kids but I was surprised at how strong and fast they were. read more

College Educated Movers restored my faith in moving companies* and they proved to be just as good as I expected based on all the positive Yelp reviews. The highlights of the move were as follows... Efficiency -- I had to reserve elevator time in my building AND the building that we moved into, and these guys hit the times perfectly. Though one of the two guys was running late, the first guy showed up on time and got started on his own (he also repeatedly refused my help). They worked quickly, and there was absolutely no wasted time. I also got a free ride in their truck. Flexibility -- They happily squeezed me in first thing in the morning despite a full schedule. Two days before the move I realized I'd have about twice as many boxes as I thought I'd have... upon e-mailing Julia from CEM, I received a fast reply that it was not a problem at all. Small price increase. No big deal. Low price -- The price that I paid was BY FAR the lowest of all the quotes that I got. There were no additional charges for protecting my stuff with blankets. I will, however, note that they don't offer insurance. The details: 2 people -- pickups from 2 different apartments -- and they moved 2 beds (frames, mattresses & boxsprings), a sofa, 2 armchairs, 2 dressers, a coffee table, an end table, a TV stand, a bookcase, a trunk, a large flat-screen TV, a bunch of framed posters, 2 wardrobe boxes, 6 duffel bags of clothing, and 14 medium & large boxes. All for under $500. This Thursday, I had to move A LOT of stuff from a duplex in BK to 2 stops in Manhattan, and of course had underestimated how much crap I own, the intricacies of dividing it between 2 stops, and how many stairs were at one of the drop-off locations. Jon and Rohan totally busted their asses and didn't jack up the quote CEM had given me, even though it took all day and lots of sweat and was more involved than I'd expected. Nothing arrived damaged, no walls were hurt, no one got grumpy, it was by far the best move I've had over many moves in my 10 years in NYC. AND it was the most reasonable, $$$-wise. After seeing my Yelp post, Julia form the office of college educated movers sent me an email and explained that the movers did not have the authorization to make such a drastic increase in price. After apologizing, she then offered my a partial and fair refund of the money tacked on by the movers. The money order arrived with in 48 hours of our initial first correspondence. The management is seems to really care about the company, their reputation and the people they are servicing. I feel bad for these guys getting poor reviews - they've done such good jobs for me in the past! I've only used them to pick up pieces of furniture I've bought on Craig's List so have no idea how they are when moving a whole apartment, but every time, they've been great. Just yesterday, they were able to accommodate multiple pick-up time changes, they took apart the piece to be moved (an enormous wall unit), brought it over, brought it up, and even offered to put the thing back together again (I declined). Moving sucks. Seriously. Even if you are totally pumped about the end results (for me, getting out of the bedbug infested Brooklyn boonies and moving to the East Village) the actual process is stressful and awful. Now imagine that you are moving from a 4th floor walk up to a 3rd floor walk up. Yeah, my friends are great, but they don't like me that much. So, I decided to suck it up and hire movers. I chose College Educated based on their great yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. They are very responsive to email (SO key!) and come the day of the move everything went so smoothly. I got Jesse and Michael as my movers and they were on time, incredibly fast, and just nice friendly guys to top it off. My new roommates went with a different company and ended up having to move 7 hours late with surly rude movers, needless to say, they were a bit jealous of my experience. Worked with them twice. First time they were great for moving a couch for us. Quick job, they were relatively on time. Then I had a big move--the whole apartment. I called the day before when some of my friends punked out of the move. CEM said that they could do it and then the day of, they just ditched. I guess they tried to squeeze in too many jobs!! When I called they said, Oh sorry, It'll be another FOUR HOURS! Great. My boyfriend and I ended up moving everything by ourselves. Pros: fast responses, nice, flexible, squeezed me in last minute, hot hot hot mover dudes who are normal, and they let you ride in the truck. Moved my one bedroom apt in 3 hours flat (start to finish) and fit everything into my storage unit. Cons: I had 5 more boxes than I estimated and got charged an extra $50 for that I guess because I didn't tell them beforehand, and got charged $25 for them to barely take apart my Ikea bed (which I really could have done). Also -- really didn't like the fact that they didn't wrap anything - they literally dragged my WHITE arm chair across the bottom of their dirty truck. Thanks, guys. They came highly recommended by a lot of people, but I honestly think I could have done this for cheaper and my stuff could have been better taken care of. Will I use again? These guys are the bommmbbb. Seriously. They rock. As you have read, Julia and the office are great at responding quickly to emails and their quotes are super reasonable. I watched them move out an old roommate of mine and knew I was going to have to use them for my next move. I contacted the office, got a quick quote and was able to set up a date and time. I had no drop off spot set and they didnt care. I also had to reschedule the move around my time off at work and Julia and Matt were super flexible in changing my reservation. I ended up telling them my drop off spot was a 5th floor walk up 2 days before and everyone was cool with that. These guys were so calm, cool, strong and over all AMAZING. I was waiting for something to go wrong and nothing did. They moved everything down and up (4 flights) super quick and with a smile. Nothing was broken, nothing forgotten, everything perfect. I was recommended to use these movers through a very good friend who had used them the previous year. 1) I ended up having more stuff than I listed, but when the movers came they said they would get everything in the truck and then let me know how much more they would charge me. Once everything was in the truck they doubled the price from $300 to 600$. At that point I had no choice. I ended up giving them 720$ cash (including the tip) and the next day talked to my friend who had used them previously. She moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn and gave them 500$ including tip; she had larger furniture pieces and just as much stuff as I did. I felt really ripped off at that point. 2) My industrial sewing machine, which I have had three different movers move before and no one ever complained, was broken during the move. The company reimbursed me on my broken item. However, the company never addressed the exorbitant fee that the movers charged me to do this simple one bedroom move. It is my belief that the company would have reduced my move fee had they not needed to fix my industrial sewing machine. This was not my fault and I can't even lift the piece that is broken to get fixed. I would not recommend these movers because they doubled the cost of my move AFTER my items were in the truck. The fee to move from Brooklyn into Manhattan was unreasonable and I was left with no choice because the items were already in the truck. read more

THE BEST. THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. I WILL NOT HEAR ANYTHING TO SUGGEST OTHERWISE. I've used these guys twice since I moved to New York: once to have some furniture brought to my new apartment in Bed-Stuy, and once a year later to move from Bed-Stuy up to Harlem. The same guys helped me both times, which was a nice surprise. A bit about me: I am an anxious person. Moving makes me absolutely panicky with dread. I have had literal nightmares about having to pack and move unexpectedly. So when it came time to change apartments, I was a very unhappy girl. But College Educated Movers (eyeroll @ the name tho) made everything so easy and painless, I could have wept with relief. They took care of everything and broke nothing, in addition to being just really cheerful and pleasant. (And cute. Yeah, I said it.) Both times I've worked with them, it was the middle of the summer and blisteringly hot outside. They still managed to load up all of my Gorilla Boxes (also recommended) and furniture quickly and without even the slightest complaint about how we were all sweating to death and I was an unhelpful mess. Once at the new place and everything was unloaded, they had a drink and hung out with me and my roommates for a bit before moving on to their next job. Such nice guys. When it came time to pay, even though I'd had a few extra things, they were just like "whatever they quoted you, it's cool." I went with these guys because of 1. their stellar yelp reviews 2. the painless/quick online quote process 3. the fact that they were able to schedule me in 2 days before the move when I decided that myself, two friends and a uhaul weren't gonna cut it. They were on time (at the beginning of the time window) and I was running behind schedule but they didn't give me a problem about still having to throw my clothes in a bag and tape up two boxes. So I just moved today, and I'm quite impressed with CEM. I am horrible at names, so I couldn't tell you who it was, but they got the job done and hella fast. Totally chill and laid back in personality, but hard workers in action. I moved from a first floor apartment in Astoria to a third floor walk-up in Brooklyn. While I didn't have much furniture, I had a lot of [heavy] boxes. I emailed CEM last weekend, they asked for a list of what I had. I gave them the best estimation of what I had/expected to have. They let me know what time frame was available (start time) and the price estimation. I confirmed, impressed with the price, prompt response, and friendly tone of the emails. Today got here, they gave me a call around 3:30 (my start time frame was 3-5pm) to let me know how far away. Got to Astoria by 4:15, had my stuff in the truck, had a glass of water, and on the road before 5pm. We drove to Brooklyn (I rode with them, which was awesome because I saved a $35 car service.) They had it unloaded by in my third floor walk up by 6pm, and even dealt with my scatterbrained purse loss - I tossed it in a box. While I had a few more things than I estimated, it was the same as my email said, and I heartily gave them (what I feel like is) a good tip. I'm impressed, happy, and will definitely recommend CEM to friends. For this move I had a one-bedroom apartments worth of stuff spread between two pick-up locations. It was a bigger clusterf*ck than I wanted to subject my friends to and after the stress of packing everything up, the last thing I wanted to do was maneuver a 15-foot truck through parking in three different neighborhoods to then sweat a couch, a bed and tons of tubs and boxes up 2 flights of steep stairs. I bit the bullet and decided to hire a moving service. I shot off about 5 quote inquires and not only did they come well recommended, CEM is one of the first companies that got back to me. Having never hired movers before, I experienced a bit of sticker shock at first but every time I visualized handling the whole mess on my own, I was reassured that I was making the right decision. The day of the move, the (as advertised) unbranded truck showed up with with two extremely laid-back and likable dudes (what up, Nico and Mike!). They handled any set backs with ease (like having to take a shelf off a wall to get a couch out) and were super efficient. Before I knew it, both pick-up locations were securely packed up and we were headed to my new home where they handled moving everything past all the bikes in the hallway and up to the third floor with a great attitude. They even did me the HUGE favor of getting my queen-sized mattress up onto my loft bed platform! It was a hot day and by the end of it, we were all dripping sweat. Simply put - these guys were great. I booked Paul and Daniel from College Educated Movers four days before I needed them. The customer response via email worked very well - I got prompt and specific answers to all of my questions. I was given a 3 hour time frame and got a call from Paul on moving day giving me a more specific time. They showed up exactly when promised and were friendly and professional from then on out. This was my first big move and they made me feel comfortable trusting them with all of my stuff. Pleasant attitudes, hard workers... all-around good dudes. And cute, too. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because they did not have the tape that their website says they provide. I needed just a little bit more and didn't buy any since their website said they would bring some, along with dollies and blankets. So we had to run out and buy some while they were moving to tape up a few last minute things. Not a huge deal, but that was the one thing that kept it from being absolutely perfect service. When making the big move from my home in the Bronx to my awesome new pad on the Upper West Side, I decided to hire movers. I've moved a lot over the last few years, but always did the packing and moving myself. This time I went the lazy route. My friend Michelle L. (whose review you can also read here) recommended College Educated Movers. I called around a bit to get quotes from three other places, but they came in with the best rate so it was a no brainer. They were awesome! It was so nice to be able to handle all of the small details and leave the big stuff to them. I never want to have to move myself again. Two minor issues: 1) My new place is on the third floor which meant "two flights" of stairs, but it is actually more like two and a half. This bumped the price up 10%, but I thought it was fair and they really worked hard. 2) One of my dressers came apart in their truck and was beyond salvation. However: a) It was cheap Ikea particle board. b) I ended up not having room for it and would have thrown it out anyway. Job well done and much appreciated. read more

To keep things short, I was moving from Brooklyn (near Park Slope) to Manhattan (Westside). CEM had great yelp reviews and quoted me the lowest price of all the movers I queried (6 places), so I went with them. I should mention I was moving out of a building with a crazy live-in landlord. The day of the move Ian and Eric showed up, who were totally professional, quick and quiet with the loadup. We didn't get yelled at once - which, considering our crazy live-in landlord was really a feat. I can't possibly recommend these guys enough. They unloaded all of our stuff quickly, in brutal heat, and up 3 flights of stairs without one complaint. In so many ways they were a lifesaver - and, to quote my girlfriend's friend, "I'm sort of attracted to these guys - it's like Dave got cute hipster movers" - so that's got to count for something! read more

These guys are fantastic. The boyfriend and I were making the big move from our separate places into one apartment, and I called these guys up. They moved my stuff in on one day, then on a separate day, moved my boyfriend and his boss. Granted, they showed up late for his boss- but the quick, reliable, and SAFE transportation of our stuff made it worth it. My only complaint is the completely spray pained van- we were told they could convince the landlord they had insurance, but the van wouldn't have fooled anyone. The guys were friendly, gave a reasonable rate (didn't even charge me when I asked them to move my roommates couch out to the street, since she so kindly left it behind for me to deal with), and helped me organize the move quickly and efficiently. These guys really impressed me. They were picking up 7 pieces from the Javits Center to bring to my apartment, but were told by security that they would have to wait in a 5 hour queue to get their truck to the loading dock. Instead of ditching the job, haggling for more money, or even complaining, they figured out a way of getting inside. It required carrying the pieces a greater distance than if they had been able to drive their truck in, but they did it anyway. In addition, they were friendly, professional, and careful with my furniture. I definitely recommend them. read more

I've used this company for small moves 3 times in the past 5 years and would highly recommend them. They show up on time, move quickly and efficiently, bring some extra tools in the truck (ropes, pads, dollies) to protect your breakables, and are very courteous. They'll even let you ride with them in the truck if they have enough seats---as with any movers, you should ask in advance. Their website has greatly improved and now enables you to provide as much info possible for an accurate quote, and their prices are fair. The only time I've been charged extra was during my latest move, when I'd counted 5 fewer boxes than I actually had. They charged me $25 total extra, which I think is reasonable. Again, my moves haven't been huge (enough to fill a 1BR apartment, max), but if you're in the same boat and looking for a reliable company to move you, check these guys out. read more

I contacted a couple of companies, and CEM was the only mover that got back to me in a timely manner. (I am actually still waiting on quotes from SAS and clean cut movers, even though my move date has passed-- ha!) I've used College Educated Movers twice now and I've had THE BEST experience each time. They were friendly and laid back but quick and hardworking. They didn't waste any time. They called us and kept us updated on what time they'd arrive. They were careful with our belongings. The price is reasonable. But most of all, they helped us with a nightmarish old clunky sofa -- which we inherited from previous tenants -- that was falling apart. They valiantly tried to get it through our tiny hallway. Simply put, these guys are pretty awesome. Yelp FTW once again! I was able to book them just two days before the move date. (Tip #1: email them for faster response. Julia is super responsive via email. I actually couldn't get them via phone). On the day of the move, the guys came right on time (at the beginning of the estimated moving window). The two guys worked effectively and efficiently (despite the six story climb). Once we got to the new place, they were just as quick. Lastly, the two guys were friendly and easy-to-talk to. The whole move took less than two hours (granted we were well packed and did not have much stuff at all). Over all, it was a smooth moving experience and I would definitely ue them again. I only hired these guys because of their yelp review - I think it was the girl who had a huge crush on her mover that got me... They kept in touch the few hours before arrival, then moved everything out of my old place super quickly. They found the best parking spot ever in front of my new apartment, and moved everything into there (oh a 4th floor walk-up) in maybe an hour?? I tried to feed/water them but they kindly refused, and even moved a little bit extra (I gave them a nice tip for that) too. Bonus - they are seriously really cute guys... so if men are your pref eye candy - these should DEF be your movers of choice. Oh and they gave me the least expensive quote of all the movers around, so yeah, awesome. read more

From start to finish, CE Movers made my interstate move a less painful experience. Rachel was quick to respond to any email I sent the office. The actual movers, Mike and Jesse, were great. Throughout the 10am-1:30pm move from Stamford, CT to Sunset Park in Brooklyn, they were communicative, courteous, fast and careful. Mike called the night before to confirm the hour they'd be showing up in CT. On the morning of the move, they called from the road to double-check their iPhone GPS directions. They arrived on time. They moved my heavy textbooks, grad school papers, kitchenware, and some pieces of furniture fairly efficiently and broke/dinged/lost nothing. They're also fast drivers. Although I got an hour headstart into Brooklyn while they were still packing my things into their van in CT, Jesse and Mike managed to beat me to my new apartment. Had I attempted this 50-mile move all by myself, I would've broken my back, suffered a hernia, been laughed out of town, etc. Fortunately, CE Movers saved me from those potentially unhappy circumstances. read more

I've used them countless times ( at least 5-6.. I move multiple times a year unfortunately). I do not become a better packer with each move. The only saving grace is College Educated Movers. They are the most efficient movers. (Some might look skinny/hipster, but they finished my one bedroom move in a max of 2 hours). So easy. I would only recommend that maybe you ask a friend to sit in the truck to guarantee no parking ticket- while you tidy up the apartment. However, if you don't procrastinate, then you can just sit in the truck while they swiftly move you out. I also researched a million other moving companies and received price quotes- nobody has compared in price and service. They've never broken anything and I'd suggest getting Gorilla Bins instead of cardboard boxes. It just guarantees the safety of your property. The fact that they don't have the insurance of other bigger moving companies has never been a problem for me and I've moved in/out of college dorms, high rise luxury apartments, walk-ups, etc. I just say they're my "friends." They're flexible with the amount of items- I always have more boxes than I say in the quote and they just charge me extra the day of (always reasonable and cheaper than I think)! This was my girlfriend's third time using CEM. She had been very pleased with the quality of their service each time. John and Rohan (the movers on our recent move) were personable, professional and conscientious. John noticed that our landlord keeps our building pristine. He told me he was taking extra-care to not create dings on the walls...as he was lugging stuff up two narrow flights of stairs! They were also very clear that they were there to move the heavy stuff. It's always a bit awkward to stand around while guys are carrying your stuff upstairs, but they made us feel very at ease. They worked quickly and efficiently...and they were nice guys who made pleasant conversation. They really made the insanity of a move-in day much more tolerable. We're not hoping to move too soon, but we'll definitely be calling College Educated Movers when the time comes. read more

Generally good, although the guys they send aren't as cute as the hipsters in the picture, and their college degrees are in question. I got a quote of $225 from Eric after a few back and forth emails for my medium-sized Brooklyn apartment. I was just moving maybe a mile away. The two guys arrived on time and decided it would be $50 more than I was quoted. I wasn't elated, because the 50 bucks was because of an argument of what's a credenza vs. sideboard. The move went fast, although I could have packed the truck much more efficiently and with less chance of broken items. But I don't think there was any damage and everything went smooth enough. So they didn't try to rip me off, and no big probs. With movers you can't ask for much more. read more

These guys were just what I was looking for: calm, inexpensive, funny and quick. They moved me out of a 5 floor walk-up with 3 emotional girls into a loft across town in just over an hour (and $200). Excellent customer service and super fast moving. I recently moved from Queens to Manhattan, when i first contacted these guys i got a quote within 5 minutes of sending them and email and it was by far the cheapest quote i got from the 10+ moving companies i contacted. On the day of the move Saab and PA kept in contact with me from an hour before they arrived to after i paid them to make sure everything ran smoothly. They moved all our furniture in a one bedroom apartment from Queens to Manhattan in about an hour and a half (which included a coffee break for the guys)! Have used them for three moves, big small and medium, over 5 years and have had consistently awesome results. Attentive/responsive in terms of coordination. On time. Fast. The last one took AN HOUR AND A HALF TOTAL. Positive attitudes - all three times they were working around not yet empty apartments - no sweat. CEM were amazing and exactly what I needed! They gave me the best price BY FAR compared to other movers and my move went off without a hitch. Mark and Patrick were incredible, showed up very close to the beginning of my window (8:45AM for an 8-12 window), and completed my move (~2 miles distance) in about an hour. I didn't have much stuff (bedroom furniture, 7 boxes, bike and an aquarium). They were friendly, professional, efficient and my aquarium (the piece I was most worried about) arrived totally safely to the new spot. Email correspondence with the company was also great, CEM were very responsive and even though I removed one item and added several more to my inventory, my quote stayed the same.
