This was an extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. I have been here before, and unfortunately, it has never been a positive experience. The employee repeatedly called me inappropriate pet names such as "babe" and "sweetheart," which was unprofessional and uncomfortable. I brought in three pairs of shoes, including one pair in a rare colorway that cannot easily be replaced. When I received them back, it appeared that parts of the shoes had simply been spray painted rather than properly restored. The quality of the work was unacceptable. What made the situation even worse was the lack of honesty and communication. The employee later told my husband that additional work had been discussed and completed, even though this was never communicated to me directly. We were also charged extra for services that were never clearly explained. Overall, this business was dishonest, unprofessional, and did not properly clean or restore my shoes. My new Dr Martens Vonda floral boots instep was tight and cutting into the top of my foot causing a lot of pain. It was impossible to break them in, turns out this is actually a common problem for DM's. The owner recommended stretching the instep after I requested to cut the tongue, and it worked beautifully! These are my shoes. They were the only ones I have in the car when I decided to go out one day after work. So I decided they needed to be professionally cleaned. I show up to this location, that I pass by every single day and thought well they've been in business for a while. Let me check them out. I dropped them off paid in advance. He said come back for them to weeks. Which was a long time I think for cleaning but what ev. I came back two days before the date just to check on them just to find that they looked the same way they were dropped off. Did you peep the Tajin on the side. Yeah that was there before I dropped it off. He was rude. He walked away when I was explaining that there was stain specifically that I requested to be cleaned. NOTHING. Always friendly & did a great job. The current owner was friendly when he first got the place, but now is just a crabby old man who charges way too much. I could overlook his crusty personality if the quality was there, but...not the case. My usual repair place was out on vaca so I took a pair of sandals in to College Shoe last week . On one shoe, the strap came undone & needed gluing. I asked him to glue the other shoe as well for reinforcement. He said he would ... he didnt. And the shoe he did glue has hardened glue glopped all over the side of the sole... he didnt bother to scrape away the excess (see pix). This is not the first time the work has been sub-par. This was my very first visit here, and I am appalled when I received my boots back with heel tip replacement simply put on. The replaced heel tip were simply sticking out on all sides. The heels were not fixed and polished like other cobblers would have done. The owner was not even apologetic when I had to bring my boots back to this horrible cobbler. College Shoe Repair does not disappoint! Have brought shoes, sandals, purses for repairs. They do excellent quality work. There is no shoe repair shop like this in Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Upland or Ontario. Usually the other repair places are way over-priced. But this place does not disappoint. Driving out to Redlands to this shop is worth the trip and you know you will get the repairs right. It's a small shop but they do amazing work! The staff is nice and professional. The purse I brought in had a magnetic clasp that kept opening each time I put too much in my bag and they fixed it without changing the asthetics of the bag. "We get a lot of strange requests," said owner Ken Aday, who took over from his father in 1978. Besides shoes, he and his two employees repair zippers, buttons, snaps and tears. Business has stayed level through the present economy, and some customers have come "as long as I can remember," he said. "The service is the best," said longtime customer Marlys Mantel, who came in Wednesday. Aday has several pictures and plaques with sayings like, "We'll save your sole" and a wooden carving of a cobbler a family member made him. A silhouette of a cobbler is on the front of his apron. His great-uncle opened the business, and Aday's father took it over shortly thereafter. It was near Orange Street and Colton Avenue, then on Orange on the south side of the freeway. Aday built his current location in 1988 to provide more space, and has a few tenants, including next-door neighbor Needle Express. Came here to get a zipper replaced on my boot and he told me he could do it for 30 bucks I'm like OK two weeks later never received a phone call or a message that they couldn't fix it, very disappointed in their service. Blown away with how good my leather wedges looked when I got them back I had to take a second look! These were my favorite wedges ever but they were scratched up everywhere with a lot of wear and tear. I brought them in thinking maybe they'll look just a bit better but they looked almost new. We asked him if he'd done belts like these before. He assured us he had. It is proper etiquette that you give the remainder of the material back to the client, which he did not. On one of my shoes, the seam along one of the toes was becoming undone. The repair was small and hardly noticeable.
