We hired Collegian for an in town move. Our experience was so horrible that I cannot believe it. We assumed a minimum level of professionalism and there was none. 1. During the estimate we were told the truck would make two trips. The team was so disorganized that it took them all day to fill the truck one time and much was left behind. We had to hire a handyman with a truck to move the items that did not fit in the truck the following Monday. 2. At the beginning of the day, the foreman and I walked through I explained what exactly needed to be moved from the house, basement and garage. I clearly marked all items in the garage. I had to ask about items that were not being packed so many times that it was like we never had the conversation. Some of the movers worked the earlier part of the day and others the whole day or afternoon. There was NO communication between the different groups and I was repeatedly asked the same questions by different people, and still there was plenty left behind. 3. They damaged the door jams of the doorway going up the stairs. There was obvious paint chips all over the floor. I had to repair the everything before the sale of our house closed. The broke miscellaneous items; foot on antique table, trim piece off of an antique mirror, they moved the table saw and threw it back in the garage not assembled properly. 4. We moved our expensive TV ourselves so that we did not have to worry about any damage. Without asking, they took the liberty of moving the tv from where we had it safely stored to lay it on the bed. I have not yet had time to unpack to plug to make sure it works. 5. I had taken out cash to give the team a tip that morning. I left my pocketbook unattended in the kitchen (which was my stupidity), and when I looked for the tip, the cash was missing. 6. There was basic oversight for this move that DID NOT HAPPEN. My new neighbors all commented that I seemed to have hired the worst movers. I had relied on these Yelp reviews to choose this mover. I see the review from Marc P. on 1/7/22, and wish I had taken the 'supposed' outlier review more seriously. 7 I spoke to the team, and they gave me a slight discount. This was offset by the fact that I had to hire a handyman with a truck to help move what did not fit into the truck. They offered to send a repairman to look at the broken items. After hiring a moving company a couple years before, I knew what I liked and did not like. I had requested a quote from Collegian when I last moved in 2016. However, I went with another company, that quoted me a flat hourly rate. I thought a 3-man move would be quick and efficient, at only $150/hour, guess-timating about $500. However, those movers were not, in fact, efficient (mainly due to back-office/poor dispatching issues, since it was the end of the day). With Collegian, I dialed the phone number and reached a person. I didn't get re-routed to a local office. I spoke with an actual, local employee. I told him about the size of the job and what items I needed to move. I requested an early move time, which they put in my request. I immediately received an email confirmation with a link to my account details on the website. A couple days before the move, they confirmed via email, acknowledging my morning move-in request would be granted. I was given an arrival window of 8-10:30 am. At 8:30 am, I received a call that the crew was on its way. They added another man (from a two to three-man crew), which increased the price an extra $25/hour. I figured that the move would have gotten completed faster. By 9:15, the crew arrived and got started. It wasn't a huge move, just furniture. It took an hour to get everything in the truck and wrapped up. Once they got to the new location, it only took an hour to unload the truck and move everything in. Nothing was damaged. The crew (led by Rick) was professional, respectful, and efficient with their time. By 11:45, we were completing the paperwork to close out the job. The only snag was the final tally of the job cost. I was quoted around $4-500, but was billed for $750. It seemed high, so I double checked it and called the office the following Monday. George acknowledged the error and agreed to get me in touch with the bookkeeper. Erin, the accountant, got back to me with an invoice stating the amount I overpaid and promised to send a check to reimburse me for the over payment. THIS is how you run a business and merit a 5-star review; meeting expectations and correcting discrepancies in a timely fashion. Thank you, Collegian. I hardly write reviews unless it's really good or really bad. I just got off the phone and I just can't even believe the conversation I had. Or FINALLY had. Here's what happened: A week ago on 8/5 I went through Home Advisor as well as online reviews to find a mover from Danbury, CT to Largo, FL. I chose 5 people with varying reviews to get quotes from so I could make an informed decision. Within 2 days I had quotes from all the companies EXCEPT Collegian. I had to call over and over again with no response aside from the people answering saying "oh, George is handling your quote and he's not in. Looks like he has some inventory info, but nothing else. I'll be sure he calls you back." It took basically telling them on 8/12 that if I didn't get a quote today I'm pretty much out. He finally just called. And the price he quoted me was over $3,000 MORE than the highest of the others (including a high end national chain mover). I was taken aback. I said he clearly must have some wrong information to be quoting me that much over the average of the others. His response if he wanted my business should have been "let's go over the inventory" or "let me check the numbers". But NOPE. Instead he was defiant and said that I should go with someone else because that's their price. Period. I couldn't believe my ears to be honest. He was so standoff-ish. I finally hung up on him. I can't obviously say how delivery is with these guys, but if this is ANY indication of how they do business, I'm glad I didn't go with them. Good luck to you on your move. read more

EDIT TO REVIEW: Collegian eventually reached out and issued a partial credit to my account. They also offered to have repairman come and fix some damaged items. Although this does not make up for my experience I believe based on their reputation and historically good reviews, my experience seems to be an outlier which can certainly happen from time to time with any business. After using a different moving company and having an all star team complete my move I mistakenly used Collegian as I wanted to support local. I hired 4 guys to do the job, 3 showed up. The guys were perplexed at the size of the job as this obviously wasn't conveyed correctly from the initial point person George. The leader was an epic fail that day as he was exhausted from the day before. These guys bulldozed through EVERYTHING. They had no system, they damaged my personal items, they damaged elevators, walls, doors, etc. Truck was barely big enough and not enough moving blankets or hand trucks. A move the previous company did in 7.5 hours took these guys 12 hours due to lack of organization and little team work. Masks wearing? I had to ask one guy 3 times to keep it on in my personal residence , he didn't care. Lastly, the leader of the crew tried to charge me for 4 people instead of 3 that showed up, another battle. I paid 5 star prices for amateur movers and learned an expensive lesson. I reached out to the company via email and heard nothing in return. Note: I believe these movers were all "decent" human beings. They obviously lacked training. In a climate where no one wants to work, these guys showed up which is worth something, but unfortunately you don't get a medal for just showing up - you have to execute. I didn't want to write this review, being in business is hard enough. Incredible no one followed up. Collegian, Really? Shameful ... Unprofessional, unresponsive, poor quality. Moved us last year , a few of the guys ok but one was so high he kept nodding out , internal fighting between other members too they were trying to rush the job so we couldn't oversee where we wanted items delivered , a bunch of items broken ,went back and forth after some time it's determined I didn't buy insurance and give they me $150 settlement . So essentially you have to buy the insurance to make sure they do the job correctly . Disappointing at best . read more

I would not say that I got a good value for my service with this one. I moved recently and used Collegian. Leading up to the move everything was fine - I was given a quote for a 7.5 hour move that would be somewhere around $1,400-$1,600. The 3-man crew finished up my relatively small move pretty quickly - it definitely came in well under the 7.5 hour quote, yet my bill was still over $1,600. Not sure how they calculated the time, but I let it go cause it seemed that the move was good... Then I started to unpack and notice things. Numerous pieces of furniture with nicks, dents, and scratches in them that weren't there before. Nothing huge that would have been immediately noticeable, but once you take a look at things after the move you notice them. Also, pretty much every box that was labeled "Fragile" ended up at the bottom of a pile of boxes and slightly crushed. The guys were nice and did a decent job but the more I go through things after the move the more disappointed I am in how it went and don't feel like I got my money's worth. The fact that they make you sign about 7 different things saying that you declined the additional insurance they want to sell you for your belongings should have probably been an early indicator to keep a closer eye on my stuff. read more

We hired Collegian to move us from CT to NC. We had four guys empty our house and two met us in NC and unloaded for us. The crew was led by Warner. I can't say enough good things about the experience. All the guys were friendly and did a great job. Nothing got broken or scratched. They packed our kitchen and all the glass and mirrors. We had an elyptical and a treadmill that had to go upstairs and they dealt with it no problem. I used Collegian movers and felt that their crew did a good job. They had all necessary tools and equipment to get the job done, including dismantle an outdoor dog kennel. I had sent photos in advance to make sure they brought what they needed, however that was not communicated to the crew. They used care when removing furniture from my home; nothing was damaged. They worked efficiently with only 2 people. The time frame and pricing I was quoted were accurate, no extras or hidden fees. The sales associate who booked my move was very knowledgeable and detail oriented, that is why I chose to book them over other moving services. The guys who came to help me move were great. They didn't complain when they saw the three stories (no elevator) they were going to need to haul all my stuff up and ensured my mother and I they'd get it done (no small or easy task) which they definitely did. My only complaint was with management and they're communication (or lack their of) with their employees. The guys claimed their manager sent them without any tools (odd) so I ended up needing to call my super to get tools to take apart the bed. It took the two guys way longer than expected to finish the job (which obviously increased the estimate they provided) and they said if they knew more about the situation they would have brought more guys. I inventoried all my stuff and gave the details about the two apartments when I booked the movers so it seems like poor communication between staff and management which resulted in the movers not being as prepared as they could have been (and again, higher cost) but ultimately I'm really happy with my move. One bookshelf was broken but they copped to it up front and provided me with my options. I haven't yet, but believe I'll be reimbursed for it. They provided me with an estimate of total costs, and requested photos of the items to be moved, which was very helpful. Be-careful of anything Collegian Movers says. The owner 'Matt' is not a man of his word. We recently moved Dec. 2019 and in the process items were damaged and stolen. I repeatedly called to discuss the issue first with Erin then with Matt. Each time Matt would say he had to check with someone else and he would call me back later that day. I should have known after the 2 time he would not call me. If the owner cannot make up his mind or make a decision who will? You then get the run around with everyone saying 'it's not my job man'. I am in agreement with Travis D who posted on 2/12/20. The original move was scheduled for 12/17 but a little 'ice rain' came and they did not call me to cancel or reschedule. So i am thinking they are still coming as planned for 9 AM. I called to see where everyone was and instead of cancelling they lead me on, saying we are trying to get workers to come in but no wants to drive in this weather. Bull... If you were out in it was not bad especially by the shore line. So they found one person who was able to come in and sent him over to pack. He was at the house for one hour before they recalled him and sent sent him to another job. What about me? The dispatcher then came over to pack and was there for three hours and did not do much. They should of manned up and said we will have to reschedule for tomorrow. And tomorrow was the day i had to be out for the final walk through. I could go on and on with details but i will not prolong the disappointment with Collegian Movers. Stay clear of them. If the owner Matt cannot do something correct or make a decision what can you expect his employee's? It will not allow me to select Zero stars so i have to select one.. read more

Who knew moving can be stress free? Many thanks to the Collegian Mover team (Ed, Joe, and Matt) who arrived on time, got right to work, and loaded all of my stuff with plenty of time to spare. They neither rushed nor dragged time for extra hours - they were smart, careful, and efficient (in sharp contrast to other movers I've used). As each box was loaded, they labeled it with a numbered tag (itemized in my receipt) and anything marked fragile they wrapped up with bubble and saran. I used Collegian Movers for our move this fall which was a complicated strenuous downsizing move within our town with multiple days and shifting of household items in 3 locations. They were polite professional careful and punctual. I worked well with Dan the foreman and he in turn managed his crew efficiently. The men followed requests very nicely and politely. These kinds of moves are exhausting and stressful but the crew stayed cheerful and professional. Nothing was damaged and everything was packed well. One minor quibble was that they didn't cover the stair carpeting with any protection so in the course of many flights of stairs over several days the carpet got a bit dirty. Collegian deserves a mention as my go-to mover over the past twenty years. Very timely, efficient and their movers embrace the opportunity to engage heavy items and negotiate tight spaces. Prices are reasonable, but as with any move, the more prep you do, the quicker and cheaper the move. They also handle small jobs when you just need a hand moving a few large items. Polite and knowledgeable front office and helpful online registration to accurately plan and estimate your move. They just moved me twice due to a 10-day delay in vacancy of new home, but they took the uncertainty and stress out of the experience by providing reasonable short term storage terms. I had a wonderful experience with Collegian Movers and would highly recommend them to anyone moving in or out of the Connecticut area. I hired them to move me from Connecticut to Jersey. The price was comparable to other companies. I moved between one-bedroom apartments and packed everything myself. They arrived within the given time frame (told between 7 and 8, they arrived at 7:45), and were thorough about paperwork and documentation. They then disassembled furniture and packed all of the boxes into the truck within 2 hours. The worked quickly and quietly, and were extremely polite the entire time. After packing, they drove directly to the new location, without stopping. I stopped for food, and they arrived before I did! They unpacked just as respectfully, putting every box and piece of furniture exactly where I asked. They even made helpful suggestions, such as putting most of the miscellaneous boxes in one room so I could use it as an unpacking "base". All in all, it was as easy as it could have been. This is the second time that my fiance and I have used these movers, both in the Connecticut area. The first time was a very positive experience, the second time not so much. To put this upfront -- the guys are great. Courteous, relatively fast and personable. I say relatively fast because there were literally 30-40 minute periods when I'd only see one guy actually moving anything. Now, it was a multi-level walk up so you had one guy on the stairs and another in the truck . . . but given what was being moved out of the apartment, the other two weren't very busy for extended periods. Which leads to my second and biggest complaint. Their original estimate was $550, which captured all items/bedrooms and drive time to our old apartment and new one. Let's put a generous tip out there . . . $150 . . . and you're looking at $700. The final tab? Nearly $1,000. Look, I'm all for paying for quality service, which we mostly received. But to have a 25 percent difference between the estimate and final invoice is completely unacceptable . . . especially when we're not going to screw the guys and hold back the tip. Long story short, this company really lost a chance at having a completely loyal client, one that moves every 2-3 years (at least) for work. But after this experience, we won't be using CM again. The periods of inactivity plus the inaccurate estimate (perhaps one in the same issue) are the two most important things to get right with a mover . . . and they dropped the ball on both ends. And as you'll see from my other mover reviews, some companies do get it right. A final word of advice from someone that's used paid movers quite a bit. It's in your best interest to be courteous but not overly friendly/conversational, and to physically get involved during the move . . . like a restaurant expediter. It's human nature - give people a minute and they're likely to take ten. read more

I used Collegian Movers for my move from New Haven to Boston on Aug 31. Everything about the service was exceptional quality. They were friendly and professional. I always had excellent experience with customer service when I called or emailed. They arrived on time, and packed up the truck very efficiently. I had a parking spot reserved for the moving truck at my destination, but of course it was occupied when we arrived. They improvised without complaint and got the job done. I was moving into a ground-level unit, I had told them upon reserving the company that there were no stairs to go up or down. I had a few pieces of large furniture, including a very large and very heavy armoire, that did not fit through the ground-level entrance. Without a complaint or a second thought, the men took these large and heavy pieces up a flight of stairs, and then back down another flight. All of my furniture and boxes arrived undamaged, the men helped me set up everything exactly where I wanted it. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this company. I have used other moving companies before and never had such a good experience. I am so grateful to have found them! read more

Hold on to your wallets, your in for a move which will be more like a movement. I had these folks move my personal effects into storage for two and half months and then moved into my new residence. They were always on time and they were always on time with their bills (except for the last one which I received six months after the move.). I fully paid for the storage and both moves to the tune of thousands. Upon receipt of my stuff I found that one (1) of two (2) new high end tub chairs upholstered in Italian wool was moth eaten. Both had to be re-upholstered. I settled for a cotton fabric. Eight silk lamp shades were in tatters and had to be replaced. Hearing aids which I put in a velvet envelope and in the top drawer of a piece of furniture were gone (hearing aids that could have been used by anyone since they install behind the ear) worth in excess of $6,000.00, were missing. A matchstick lamp shade was missing and a gallery framed picture was missing. I made claim for the re-upholstering and the lamps shades because I would have had difficulty making claim and proving the rest. I have recently received a check in the amount of $345.00. My claim amounted to $1,264.18 (for the lamp shades and re-upholsetering) because they were the only losses that I could prove in a court of law. Collegian, in adjusting my claim (SIX MONTHS PLUS AFTER THE MOVE) charged me additional "labor" and "material" reducing my compensation to $345.00. This is a clever way of taking you for a ride. If you use Collegian Movers be sure to stay with the men who remove the furnishings from your home while they wrap drawered furniture with plastic wrap. I didn't and that was a big mistake. Be sure to write on your check when your furniture is delivered the legend "paid in full". Be sure to take pictures of your furnishings before they are taken from your home. In fact, I wouldn't think of using Collegian Movers again and I can tell you that you would be best advised not to use them unless your ready for a "bath". It will be one of the worst experiences of your life. read more

Great moving experience!

They were a disaster. I don't write reviews but this is a human obligation to not let people be fooled by them. We moved a couple of months ago. I had used them for my previous move and this one had the same amount of stuff except for a TV, a disassembled bow flex, a day bed and washer dryer. The last move was average, with the crew bumping some stuff around. We were stuck since the closing on the new house was complicated and we had to cancel the other movers. They took 9 hours total to move a small two bedroom condo to 14 mile away. I actually had packed the boxed and piled them up in the garage so as to decrease the time. At the condo : I had specifically told the manager on oh one that I have a washer dryer and I don't have the tools to unhook it. But the crew came in without the required tools. Not just that, they were blaming me for not having unhooked it myself. It came to a point that they had spent 30 minutes doing nothing and blaming me for it. So I cut the pipes. Then they broke the support system of my treadmill. And we're saying that it was already so... After 30 minutes of trying to push it through the door, they said that I need to disassemble the treadmill since they can't fit it through the door. I told them that the last crew did fit it easily though the door. They finally got it out without needing to disassemble it. While taking it out, one of the crew members said "this MoFo is trying to act stupid". When I asked what is he trying to say, he put the treadmill down and came with a threatening body posture at me. Mind you, he was like 6,5'' and big. Later they left with not even unwrapping the drawers and chest. The plastic wrapping was still on them. They even left a blanket in one of the refrigerators. My couches are all scratched, furniture bumped. Chairs are loose. Will I recommend them to you. ... Hell no. It was a mistake to hire them.... Did I tip them, of course I did... Coz my wife wanted everyone to be happy...... read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. Bar NONE! We had a two bedroom apartment which we accessed via an elevator and were moving less than 10 miles away into a 4 bedroom house. We were quoted 5 hours for the move, approximately 600 dollars. They sent 3 workers who worked at a less than eager pace. Because we were in a city one person had to stay at the truck to guard the belongings, and another worker told us it was his first day on the job. When all was said and done, it was over 12 hours later, the legs on our dresser were broken, the wall was dented in the new house, and a light fixture had been ripped from the ceiling. They require cash payment, so I was prepared for 10 hours and was unable to pay the extra two hours. I was willing to let all of that go as the repairs were approximately 200 dollars for the damage and I didn't have enough money to pay for the extra time. As bad of an experience as that was, I wanted to move on. However things got much worse. After 2 weeks of settling into the new house, I finally got around to setting up my 64" Samsung plasma TV (paid over $2K for TV) which was in PERFECT working condition before the move. After hanging it on the wall, hooking up the cable and attempting to turn it on, it was obvious that something was very wrong. It had no picture, made a horrible humming noise, and upon closer inspection I could see a small crack in the glass in the corner of the screen. Upon learning of this damage, I have been calling the owner Matt for 3 days now, leaving voice mail messages and messages with the secretary Brian (who accused me of lying about the TV in an attempt to avoid taking responsibility), and have yet to get a response from anyone. I hired professional movers because I wanted professional help in moving my valuables by an experienced and careful crew. I am completely disappointed by my experience, but even more let down by the response from the owner and his employees. Choose a moving company that cares for your structure, belongings and takes responsibility when they make an error be it in a gross misestimate of the cost of the move, or damage to your valuables. Might be ok for small moves, but can't recommend for bigger moves... We hired Collegian Movers to move us out of an 1800sq ft house with lots of stuff in the basement. Was told on the phone that the move would take approx 11 hrs. The crew showed up on time. The guys were nice and hard working....BUT by the afternoon it was clear they were tired and jut wanted to get the job done and go home. They started getting really sloppy with our stuff, putting boxes in the first room they could find - not in the room I requested. One cabinet was suppose to go down in the basement and the Crew leader asked, "Can we just leave it in the garage?" (They brought it down into the basement). They nicked up furniture including my dining room table and they gouged my newly painted dining room wall. They finished the job in nine hours. i was prepared to pay for 11 hrs and would have much preferred to pay the extra two hours and had my stuff placed where I wanted it, and my furniture not damaged. However, when I called to complain to the company, they were very professional and apologetic and took action to rectify the situation immediately. They sent out someone ( a subcontractor) to repair the damage to the wall and furniture. I was pleased with the response from the company. When they subcontractor came out, he referred to the company as "Collision Movers" That should tell you something. I guess they would be fine if you have to move out of an apartment or small condo but these guys just did not have the stamina for a big job and got sloppy with my home and furniture.
