Kicking myself for not joining AAA sooner, I sat motionless in a parking lot off to the side of main Sir Francis Drake Blvd. traffic. My car had just stalled out, and refused to start willingly, or run at all without constant application of the gas pedal. I faced the possibility of having my car towed from San Anselmo to San Rafael, which could not be cheap despite the short distance. Being a full time high-school student, I work part-time at the Fairfax Theater, earning a minimum-wage salary. So did the only thing I could think of, I called Collie Autoworks, the place I had located to fix up the car I had just bought a month or so ago, a 1994 Mercedes Benz E320. They were phenomenal. Promptly following my plea for help, I received a call from a man named Lee who worked at Collie. He asked how to find me, and showed up a short time later in a Mercedes SUV. I showed him the problem I was having, and he said, despite my car's chronic stall problem, he thought he could get my car to Collie sans tow truck. I eagerly agreed, and he told me to meet him back at Collie by driving his SUV. Lee proved himself to be an exceptionally professional driver, beating me back to Collie, by shifting into neutral to stop, and keeping constant gas on the car, he delivered up my car probably 10 minutes before I got there in the SUV. With the car in their care, all I had to fear was the bill that would surely be immense given the problems with my car. Already delighted by the avoidance of extra expenses, I was thrilled when they took naught but a day to evaluate the damage, give me an estimate, and do all the work. But what really enthralled me, truly made my day, was the cost of all the work. Roughly half of what I had expected was due. Denise and Darren walked me through all of the problems they had fixed, as well as future issues to keep an eye out for some miles down the road. I have been back there several times in preparation for a road trip, as well as a few tune ups, and a minor repair. Each experience has been equally amazing, and the whole shop has such a warm inviting feel that I find myself hoping some minor cosmetic problem will arise, so I will have an excuse to drop by and see the bright people down at Collie Autoworks. I brought my 1982 240D in to have the head gasket replaced after it failed one night while I was merging onto 101 northbound. As with any situation where the head has to come off, there's always the chance that it's more than just a simple head gasket replacement. My old workhorse was no exception. After the head was cleaned and inspected by the machine shop it was found to be cracked to the point of being better off as a boat anchor than to try repairing it (keep in mind, cast iron heads aren't as easy to fix as ones made of aluminum). Rodger, who I dealt with most of the time, tracked down a good used cylinder head off a running donor motor and after discussing the added cost, it was sent off to the machine shop for cleaning, inspection and a valve job. It was given a clean bill of health so onto the engine it went. I have now a little over a thousand miles onto the fresh head and everything seems to be holding up nicely. The work wasn't cheap but it's the quality I care about. The engine idles smoothly now, it has regained some of the power it was missing through compression loss due to the failed gasket, and it doesn't smoke near as much as it once did. It even sounds healthy again. I'm good about keeping up with valve adjustments on this car but it has never sounded this nice since I've had it, even after adjusting all the clearances to spec. Now that it has fresh valve guides the oil consumption is way down, which is great. It's no longer using up coolant either. Overall, I'm very pleased with the repair work. It was more costly than originally anticipated (~$2600) and it did take a long time but considering the engine had to undergo major surgery and a head had to be sourced there's really nothing to complain about. The crew was great about keeping me up to date on what was going on, where the costs were at, etc. The customer service was top notch. To top it off, they even washed the car before I came to pay the bill and collect my car. Since then I've replaced the radiator, water pump, coolant, thermostat and a couple hoses on my own time to bring the cooling system up to par and protect the investment. Collie Autoworks sees plenty of older diesels in their shop on a frequent basis so if yours is in need of repair, I recommend them without hesitation. They even had a sweet vintage 280SE convertible in while I was there. It's great to have a place you can go to that knows how to work on the older models. To conclude, you get what you pay for, which is quality workmanship and honesty, both of which are tough to find at most garages. One thing I recommend however is to book your appointment well in advance. The place is busy! read more

I reviewed this operation last September, 2015 and had additional scheduled service recently performed on transmission, and engine oil & filter and some fuel supply and injector issues. I had to leave the1984 300TurboDiesel with them while parts were ordered from Germany-including a new fuel tank as they original one was neglected by the previous owner due to lack of driving, maintenance, etc. Knowing the vehicle would be be stored exposed to the elements, Roger suggested I get a car cover to protect it. What kind of service manager does this? Most places would let the car sit there-uncovered, but Collie Autoworks goes the extra mile as if it was their own car. I am impressed to say the least. I go the car back in advance of the scheduled due date and within the original estimate-and clean, inside and out. Good work! read more

This place rocks. I've been bringing my c300 here for five years and every single time, I walk away happy. Today I stopped in because my tire-pressure alert went off and a headlight is out. They were super busy, but even without an appointment, they were able to fit me in and things were taken care of efficiently within an hour. I like it that they let me know when to expect services, such as tire replacements, brakes, oil changes. I have a Mercedes that Collie Autoworks has worked on several times and each and every time they have helped me find ways to save money without me even prying for information. They've helped me track down the cheapest prices for parts making all the necessary phone calls and kept me abreast of every last detail. There is never a hazy experience. What's up with their prices? I had an oil change for my Audi done here for last year and they only charged me around $100. Today I called for an oil change for the same car and they quoted me $185! In contrast, the Sonnen Audi dealership (around the corner) only charges $119 and a place across the street only $90. I explained to the guy that I just wanted a basic oil change (the more comprehensive "inspection" was not necessary given my mileage), When I told him that even the dealer was charging less, he said something to the effect "it comes with a safety inspection" and "synthetic oil cost more" (FYI, the $90 and $119 quotes included synthetic) and then he hung up on me. Too bad because my first experience with them was positive and I was hoping to use them again. read more

Being a single woman, who doesn't know much about cars, I am always just a little hesitant to take my car in for repair. After purchasing a previously owned BMW, I noticed it making a rather embarrassing noise that sounded like a cheap bed spring. I heard about Collie Autoworks from a friend and decided to take my car there. Shortly after I dropped off my car, I received a phone call from the owner, Darren Collie. Darren explained that he looked up my car and found that it was still under factory warranty. He said that if I take it to a BMW shop that I shouldn't have to pay for the repair. Darren then gave me a written report of what needed to be repaired to stop the noise. I took my car to Sonnen BMW and gave them the report, 6 months and 5 services appointments later Sonnen was not able to fix the problem! For one appointment they had my car for 3 days! Last week a light in my car came on telling me that I needed service. I took the car back to Collie Autoworks. Collie gave me a loaner to drive while my car was in the shop. They returned my car in one day, serviced, oil changed AND fixed the noise for only $189!! Darren could have taken my money that day I first took my car to him but instead his honesty has given him a loyal customer who will only take her BMW to Collie from now on. On a more personal note I have met both Darren and his wife Denise and they are both very nice people who always seem to have a smile for their customers :) read more
