I used Colma Cremation in December, 2015 and November, 2021. Although ownership may have changed, the value is still exceptional. I was just looking for retrieval of remains and cremation, without a funeral service. All of the personnel we dealt with were kind, caring and professional. I learned that they outsource the cremation, so that keeps their costs down and the price they charged was hundreds less than others we contacted. Colma was amazing. I found one place that was slightly less expensive, one that was the same price and a bunch up to double the price. Calling around was stressful. When I called around, they all seemed to use industry lingo that I don't have the first clue about, there were all these extra charges for miles and days of storage and such, and a lot of them talked badly about their competitors. It wasn't that way with Colma though. What made me choose Colma, was Stephanie. She wasn't pushy at all, she was very upfront and so kind. Thanks for your reply Rueben, but it's as sterile and ill informed as you are. You're basing your "knowledge" off of a 2 minute conversation without looking at my paperwork which covers all of that! Your assistant just abruptly cut me off and put you on the phone as I was trying to explain that. "Conservatorship just covers financial" is what she told me and that I needed POA. WRONG! You might want to have been a little bit more sensitive and compassionate and maybe, looked over my paperwork before making a blanket statement. And thanks for the condescending reply but guess what, your arrogance got the best of you. Maybe you might want to listen to people, you might learn something you don't know. I'm a native San Franciscan and will NEVER do business with you and I'll make sure to pass the word!! Already went somewhere else who talked to me and not AT me. "What makes us truly unique?" Well, I would have to say the lack of respect and professionalism! Let me paint you a picture, Yelp. The office greets you with sun damaged advertisements for souvenirs of the deceased. Not a single person in the office is dressed professionally, I'm pretty sure I saw someone wearing leggings. The place smells like the apartment of a person who smokes indoors. To top it all off, some radio station was playing on the upper level the whole time we were there. "Celebration" by Kool and The Gang came on at one point. Filling out the forms goes somewhat okay. The person who assisted us used a lot of jargon and did not explain any of it very well. It's the first time I've had to deal with this, how am I supposed to know funeral home shop talk? Then there was a sales pitch for something called a "Thumbie" which is a pewter thumbprint. There was a stand on the desk that was dusty and faded advertising Thumbies. I understand that many funeral homes try to sell people things they do not need at their most vulnerable time, but don't sell me something that looks like it came from Six Flags in 1997. Tacky. We wait almost a week for the death certificates and when we finally get them, my mother's middle name is missing. Just not on the certificate. At all. They somehow managed to put it on the form but not get it onto the certificate. We checked the form, her middle name was on there. I don't even know how this happened, but my weird feeling about this place was validated as they did, indeed, screw up. Oh but don't worry, they didn't charge us for the amended copies. Eye roll. Then I called today to request an additional copy of the certificate. I'm out of state and asked them to mail it to me and this is what Desiree said to me on the phone, "We can mail it to you, but just so you know it might get lost in the mail. We could Fed Ex it to you for $40 if you would like." Are you kidding me? Wow. I feel like they're intentionally not going to send it to the correct address now. So no, I would not recommend this place to anyone dealing with the death of a loved one. read more

Great service from Tilda and Reuben. We first went to Duggans because my family always used them but when we saw their price for caskets and service price we were shocked. We looked at Yelp and found Colma Cremation and Funeral Service had great reviews. I was skeptical at first but from the time we inquired about their services and the big difference in casket costs and service costs to the actual funeral we were treated with kindness, compassion and respect. Unlike the Salesperson at Duggans who suggested we create a "Go Fund Me" acct. to cover funeral costs for my brother-in-law. That might be ok for others but that sounded insulting to us. I was referred to Colma Creations by the cemetery for my uncles funeral and I ended up going with them because they were close to the cemetery and their prices were lower than other funeral homes. Joe and Pam are very helpful. My grandma-in-law passed away in the early morning and the elederly home asked us to transfer the body of my grandma-in-law in less before 9:00 am. When going through something like this, many aren't in the frame of mind to think of researching options. When my mom suddenly passed at home we were forced to pick a funeral home for her to be taken to right then and there. We didn't know any better and ended up overspending and paying people who were noncompassionate and cold. I researched three funeral homes this time but after talking to Desirée I cancelled my third appointment. She offered condolences several times, was compassionate, empathetic, and understanding. I got a warm feel from CCFS. Their pricing is spelled out on their website. There are no hidden costs. There were no surprises at the end. After calling we met the following day. Desirée provided options and spelled everything out clearly. I had special requests which were accommodated and I felt that was the added touch. Desirée went above and beyond here. CCFS uses local facilities for services. Not having their own, this is how they are able to charge reasonable rates. Our viewing was at a local chapel in South San Francisco. It wasn't as lavish as I'd hoped it would be, slightly disappointing visually BUT I could have paid double and gone somewhere else but I wasn't entertaining that idea so I'm not so much complaining as stating an opinion. The viewing was very nice. Joe, the owner, was present. He's also a grief counselor and took the time to speak with me for a bit to explain the grief process; let me know what to expect and gave reassurance. The passing away of a loved one is already full of stress and pain. We were looking for a crematory service for the transfer of our dads urn and remains from Arizona to San Francisco. Dealing with this simple task was turning to be arduous and stressful with us not being in AZ and the cost that seemed unreasonably high. The transfer was another obstacle that was challenging since it involves the permit, choice of another urn to fit the niche with our mom. I decided to check Yelp and found out the many good reviews of this family owned business. Long story short, Joe gave us suggestions and offered to pick up our dad's urn at the Church and do the transfer in an affordable urn to fit. I don't normally write reviews on Yelp, but in this instance I believe it's important that I do so. While this review is long, I hope that you'll take the time to read it. I thought about making it shorter, but in doing so, I don't think I'd be able to present a complete picture of my experience with Colma Cremation & Funeral Services ("CCFS"). I researched various places on-line, along with pricing, etc. on a consumer website, and I decided to call CCFS. Their website was simple, straightforward, and included a detailed description of their pricing. What you see on their website is what you get; there are no hidden fees. I think it's one of the only places that is so upfront about their pricing, including optional items one may prefer. In addition, prior to calling CCFS, I reviewed the biographical descriptions of Joe, Pam, Amy and Desiree. I was impressed by the depth of their combined experience in the fields of hospital pathology, forensic pathology, grief and bereavement counseling, and hospice, etc. I and some members of my family met with Joe and Pam. They are the most caring people one could ever meet. While they are in the business of providing one with cremation and other services related to one's deceased loved one, they are equally, if not more, focused on you as the one who is left behind upon the passing of a loved one. That's important because grieving can be an extremely difficult journey for some. They offer free grieving support services. This is my fifth major loss, and even I felt that I learned much from both of them, and that their advice was so very helpful. Their depth of experience in this area and commitment to what they do is what makes this different from any other experience I've had with any other funeral director. At CCFS, know that you'll be treated in a caring and sensitive manner that all comes from the heart; there's no artifice here. This is a time that one always will remember, so it's imperative that this experience be the best that it can be under the circumstances. In retrospect, I appreciate this point even more. I had a witnessed cremation. Desiree was exceptional in explaining all of the aspects related to this process. Joe prepared my mother in a way that I didn't think was possible without embalming (though he is a licensed embalmer). I thought embalming was the best way to preserve the look and feel of a loved one. However, having attended a number of funerals, I'm accustomed to seeing people embalmed and didn't like the way they looked and felt to the touch -- unnatural and like cold clay to the touch. What Joe gave to me was an opportunity I didn't expect -- one last time to see and touch my mother in a natural state, which was a great gift to me. After seeing his work, I don't understand how anyone would ever choose to have a loved one embalmed. He's a true master at his craft. The entire team at CCFS is nothing but professional, and their follow up is excellent. I've found them to be some of the most honest and sincere people you'll ever encounter in any business. Upon learning what I wanted to do, they informed me that I didn't need the package that I initially chose; they saved me money by doing so. I'm not in the funeral business and wouldn't know any differently, but that's how honest they are. It is refreshing to encounter a business that truly cares about its customers. More than my funeral directors, I've come to consider the team at CCFS friends. They bring an uncommon combination of professionalism, compassion, sincerity and honesty to all that they do. Yes, I'm about a year late but wanted to give Amy kudos and challenge those still with the business to match her care. Amy's parents owned Colma Cremation and she went above and beyond the call of service to help me with a vendor she worked with to make a custom container for our family. The order kept coming back with the image askew and Amy worked several extra hours, days, weeks! to make sure they got it right. ( Everything is available on their website) Joe, Amy, Desiree, and Pam run a first class operation that makes you feel as though you are being helped by family friends. Joe helped immensely with the stress. I thought I wasn't going to be able to do something nice with the money I had, but that wasn't the case. What can I say about Colma Cremation?.... PLENTY! In this age of corporate greed and non-service, I find Colma Cremation to be an oasis in the desert of an impersonal world. I recently lost a very good friend of mine. I knew this man for fifteen years; he was a fourth generation San Franciscan, retired San Francisco motorcycle officer, and all around great person, he was 82 years old. He entrusted to my care the ability to make funeral and burial arrangements for him upon his passing. His wish was to be cremated and placed in the local cemetery. I called almost every cremation society and funeral director in the area, and what an education I received. Prices ranged from the unreasonable to the outrageous, I finally called Colma Cremation. I met with a Joe Stinson, who was the Funeral Director/Proprietor for Colma Cremation; I have not met a more caring and understanding person. He walked me through every phase of the arrangements to which I knew with confidence that my friend was in the best hands. The staff was very kind and accommodating, I could not have been more pleased. To this day I cannot believe how these corporation that have taken over almost all of the funeral homes and cemeteries around the city, feel that they can charge the prices that they do, almost TWICE what I paid at Colma Cremation. When my father passed, my brother found this plaCe. CCFS is a family owned business. They do not have their own facilities for viewings which helps keep costs low. Since it is family owned they really put a lot of effort into what they do. They are warm, patient, caring, and very understanding about the emotions people go through during these difficult times. The entire staff was wonderful. CCFS was very accommodating. My mom had some specific things she wanted done and it was not a problem. They are also green and do not embalm. My father looked amazing! Joe, the owner, was always in touch with my mom letting her know what was next and what to expect. He is also a grief counselor and has a calm soothing demeanor. He was there for the services and guided us along. Got there early to make sure all went smooth. Once the ashes were ready Joe told my mom he would drop them off. I was there... Joe was again kind, respectful, and empathetic as he counseled my mom. My mom was very glad to have used CCFS, as was my entire family. read more
