Visiting historic graves [Colma CA] We don't have any loved ones buried here but we stopped by to pay respect to some notable figures laid to rest at this cemetery: Bay Area peeps... who remembers "The Green Grocer?" I remember watching his segment on KPIX-TV when we lived in the South Bay (San Jose). He was the produce expert. He liked to give his viewers advice what fruits and vegetables were bargains and which to avoid. * Joe Carcione - Bay Area TV Personality. We wanted to see one particular famous baseball player but I was surprised to see a list of former MLB players who are also laid to rest here: * George Kelly - first baseman who played most of his MLB career for the New York Giants. * Babe Pinelli - third baseman and umpire in the MLB was mostly with the Cincinnati Reds from 1922 to 1927. * Hank Sauer - left fielder in MLB playing mostly for the Cincinnati Reds from 1941 through 1959. He also had a short career with the SF Giants The one being the most well known, of course, is: * Joe DiMaggio - American baseball center fielder who played his entire 13-year career in MLB for the New York Yankees. Joe was born in Martinez CA. Now I don't know much about his baseball career but I do know about his short-lived marriage to Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. There were a lot of politicians buried here too including: * George Moscone - 37th mayor of San Francisco CA from January 1976 until his assassination in November 1978. He was a former Board of Supervisors member, served in the California State Senate from 1967 until becoming Mayor. He served as Majority Leader in the Senate. Cute place, but my son had to go poop in a trashcan because all of the bathrooms are locked. Everywhere you go and even the one that's open by the main entrance doesn't have any toilet paper so you're using seat covers or paper towel. For the amount of money they charge. I figured they could do a little bit better. read more

Service for burial is excellent. However maintenance in the past 10 years especially at St Michael's has been awful. They cut grass and leave it on ground, drive over to tombstones. I go weekly to tend my parents graves and deal with picking up grass all over tombstones AND geese feces is abominable !!! read more

My grandparents are buried here and everyone is always very friendly and helpful! Now my siblings have also reserved their eternal resting spots here, so it is nice to not have to worry about this task in the future. The chapels and grounds are kept up nicely and there is ample space and comfortable chairs to visit with our parents in the All Saints Mausoleum. We love that the parking is easy and the hours fit our schedule. read more

Most of our family members are buried there. Our dilemma is that we have to keep an eye on the grass as we might step on geese poops. The worst is that the tombs of our family members have goose dirt. We have to make sure we have a brush and water to clean it. I complained by calling and email but nothing happened. We have 4 generations of family buried here. Over the last 5 years we have been finding more family. Last year we discovered my hubby's great grandmother didn't have a headstone. The office was SO helpful. We made an appointment and came in and ordered a beautiful headstone. I believe we got great value. Everyone from the maintenance to the ladies answering the phones are helpful and nice. As we were looking for Rose (who didn't have a headstone at the time) a man working there in his suit stopped and helped us- and went to retrieve a plot map from the office for us too! Good service and consistent through generations of family loss and internments. Can get lost, grab a map or download from QR code. Grounds kept well. Only drawback is people steal vases full of flowers off the indoor crypts. I wish they had permanent flower inserts, it's very distasteful and disrespectful for people to take them from our loved ones and the expensive silk arrangements that we left. read more

Hello I would appreciate if Holy Cross in Colma Ca, would keep the men's bathroom clean n there is only 1 stall for the men to use, the stall is broken why can't u fix the stall in the men's bathroom? It's been like that for 2 yrs now. Come on now holy cross with all the $$ we pay for our loved ones there & you can't even hire a plumber Holy Cross, there is always men waiting to use the bathroom. Months after all the wind and rainstorms yet this large fallen tree is still here. Completely covers some of the headstones. Other trees have been removed but this one is still here...why??? It was Mother's Day Weekend. Drove a few hours due to traffic. Got to the mausoleum 6 mins before close--enough time to pay my respect to my grandparents and other family members. Nope! A groundskeeper noticed during a past visit we were trying to figure out how to put the flowers in the ground and advised the tombstone and flower holder can be prepared in advance by calling the office. He then went out of his way that day with this task, to my relief, since we had driven from Vallejo and traveled from SoCal. On 9/12/24, spoke to Betty, who advised they preferred a week's advance notice but would do their best for our 9/13 visit. So happy to arrive and all was prepared for us. I would highly recommend Holy Cross cemetery. The grounds are very well maintained and the staff is very compassionate and listen to your desires. I have several family members that are buried at Holy Cross. Recently, we had to bury my dad. Years ago, he and my mom bought their plots. My husband's parents are both buried at this cemetery. It's one of quite a few final resting facilities in the City of Colma. I was part of the planning for my mother-in-law's funeral / burial services over ten years ago. I don't recall a lot of the details of the process, but it seemed to go smoothly enough as she already owned the plot next to her husband. The actual ceremony at the grave site was handled with appropriate reverence and care, as I remember. The location of the graves is easy to find near the top of the hill. There's a garden section nearby where it looks like produce is grown, which is always a bit of a surprise to see when in a cemetery. The grass is well kept, as befits a section where only flush to the ground headstones are allowed. That makes for easier landscaping / mowing. A water spigot isn't too far away, which makes it convenient to fill up a cup or bottle to water cut flowers. Every time we go, I see something new in the overall property. There are mosaic murals depicting scenes from the lift of Jesus in other parts of the grounds, which are quite striking. One downside is the presence of various migrating birds, as well as local ones that like to stay put. They tend to leave a mess, which requires watching where you're stepping. Must be lots of extra fertilizer for the landscape! read more

Manicured lawns and well maintained plots. Office Staff & Groundskeepers are nice & everyone's so attentive during interment ceremonies. The guards always let us slide in technically after close to allow for a quick hello before locking up the gates for the evening. read more

I went to the cemetery recently to find the gravestone of my grandmother, who was buried there in 1987. I was surprised that a business like this would not have signage in their cemetery to assist people who are trying to find their loved ones. Old signs have either been destroyed or are obscured, numbers that were written on the curbs have long since completely faded away, and there is truly no way to find your loved one unless you have an employee drive you to the gravesite, which I eventually had to do. There is a directory up near the entrance, a very poorly constructed directory that doesn't even include a "You Are Here "indication. I found it insulting that this business would take people's money, put their loved one in the ground, and then make it impossible to find them. Also, the grave itself had not been properly maintained by the cemetery, in terms of trimming the grass around it, which is the bare minimum that they agree to do.The grass and soil had grown over about a quarter of the gravestone. I saw a much older woman a few sites over, struggling mightily to get on her knees so that she could clear away the soil and grass on her loved ones gravestone with a gardening pick she had brought for this purpose. As I watched her struggle so hard to do this simple act of maintaining her loved one's gravesite, it struck me as extremely disrespectful on the part of the cemetery, that they would out her in that position. read more

I don't recall if I've ever reviewed a cemetery before but I'm compelled to review this one since I've been to it so many times to visit my best friend who was laid to rest here in 2003. He is located towards the back so I always drive through most of the property, admiring the graves of wealthy people. I mean, there are so many beautiful mausoleums that it makes you wonder who these people are. In fact, Joe DiMaggio, the famous baseball player, lies here. They have restrooms near the entrance and they have a security guard who hangs out in a truck. The whole place seems very clean and well-maintained. Please respect the dead! read more

It's a bit strange to review a cemetery, but Holy Cross -- located 15 miles south of the heart of San Francisco -- is an amazing site to see. So much history, so many stunning mausoleums and "family vaults", so much history. The most visited grave, of course, is Joe DiMaggio. Right off the road, there's parking in front. While by normal standards grandiose, it seems humble for such an icon; a man who married Marilyn Monroe, a man that STILL holds the consecutive game hit-streak record, a New York Yankee, a multiple-time World Series champ, a man immortalized in a Simon & Garfunkel classic song. He doesn't have a mausoleum or family vault as others do, but a very unostentatious grave. While I'm sure many have a personal reason to visit, those visiting for Joe D shouldn't miss the rest of Holy Cross's history. There's George Moscone, San Francisco's great mayor who was assassinated alongside Harvey Milk by Dan White in 1978. There's Amadeo Giannini, founder of Bank of America and philanthropist. There's James D. Phelan, famous Gold Rusher, Mayor of San Francisco, leader of 1906 earthquake recovery efforts, and U.S. Senator. There's another Baseball Hall of Famer, "Long George" Kelly. There are also stunning family vaults, such as the unforgettable one for the Dunphy-Carmen family. It's a beautiful, well kept cemetery. The families of those there should be honored to be in such a beautiful place. read more

My uncle is buried here. 3 stars for the peace, quiet with chirping birds, breeze, and shade the trees provide. Sadly, this cemetery is not well kept and needs a lot of maintenance. There are mounds of dirt on top of memorials, dry grass, weeds, some grave markers have completely disappeared under the dirt and grass. A lot of dead flowers arrangements that should have been thrown away months ago still remain. I honestly think no one looks after these burial grounds anymore. Most of the deceased had been buried long ago and either they have no family or have been sadly forgotten by them and the cemetery personnel. read more

My mom wanted to visit her mom, my grandmother. I also came to visit my aunt, my mom's sister, and my uncle. It was a long drive but worth it. I miss them very much. As we drove up, I literally didn't know where to find them, so I had to FaceTime my cousin so she can guide me and she did. Thanks cousin! So glad iPhones have FaceTime. Haha. I felt a sad feeling as I was looking for my grandmother, aunt and uncle. I literally cried not knowing why I was crying. Pretty strange. I know that they were near. I felt the same experience when my aunt died. I cried uncontrollably. I got to say hello and give my regards. I was trying to find flowers but I don't think they sold them there. I wasn't sure. I managed to get the rose from my cousin's wedding and put it on my grandmother's grave so that she felt her granddaughter's presence. I definitely believe in the afterlife after we pass. This place was peaceful and a nice place. Bring a jacket. It was cold and windy. You had to park on the side as there's no parking spaces. read more

Ever since my ma in-law passed away, we've regularly paid a visit here at All Saints Mausoleum situated on the grounds of Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in the city of Colma, California. Ironically, my uncle was also buried here and is only footsteps away from the mausoleum up the hill in an area for those who are proud to have served our country. I've paid my respects as well... Besides the notables mentioned by fellow Yelper Manabu M. and others, Holy Cross is also the largest and the oldest cemetery in Colma. There's a catholic chapel in All Saints Mausoleum which holds a mass service at 11 am every first Saturday of the month so many take this opportunity to visit loved ones and catch mass all in one place. During our visits, I've noticed that the cemetery grounds here are well kept and I can say the same for the upkeep of All Saints Mausoleum. Though It feels strange having to rate this review using the Yelp star definitions, my five stars equate to how completely pleased and satisfied I am with the cemetery, the mausoleum and services offered. My aunt passed away recently and I have to fulfill her wish to be buried in this cemetery. Leslie was very helpful. She guided me through the process that made it more easy especially I'm grieving. The ladies who called me ..( I remember one of them is Monica) was so nice. The male staff that assist us going to the site and the people who are working on the site are so considerate. St Mary's is the largest and oldest cemetery in Colma. This necropolis is the final resting place of more than 351,000 people since it opened in 1887. The graves of many legendary Californians can be found here, and so are almost all of my S.F ancestors and their kin. It is a fascinating place to explore. If you pick up a walking brochure at the office you can find the graves of many of the people who help create and change San Francisco. If history is not interesting to you, perhaps you might enjoy walking under the stately, century old trees with only the sound of birds to break the quite. When I visit I do listen to my favorite version of Danny Boy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL8Qe6ns_r8 This is not my favorite of the 17 cemeteries in Colma to explore; it just isn't as photogenic as some of the others. So I just drove all the way from San Jose to visit my father on his birthday. This cemetery closing hours are posted at 5pm. I got here a few minutes after 4pm only to find that the mausoleum part of the building closes at 4pm. I called the office but they refused to let me in the mausoleum to visit my father. It's amazing how much they charge families to be at this place and they make zero accommodations to make you feel like the price you paid to put your loved ones here was well spent. I took an Uber here to visit my grandparents and John was so helpful and gave me a map exactly where they were and even walked outside to show me which direction to go in. Almost all my members who have died are buried here. We actually have them all located near each other. My siblings and I, and some of my aunts and other relatives have also pre-purchased our "plot". Only downside are the geese who poop all over the place, but I guess would be the same in all the neighboring cemeteries. It is beautiful here during mother's day, father's day, christmas and special occasions when you see a sea of flowers and balloons. Their grounds are well-maintained and are green compared to some other cemeteries that look so bare with dirt. read more

I have 10+ family members laid to rest here as well as another family member that has chosen this spot for when he passes. That said, with the astronomical prices they charge for a crypt, you would think that they'd keep up with basic maintenance. NOPE! We have been asking the staff for YEARS when the roof was going to be repaired/replaced as the only section (from what we could see) that had major water damage was above where our family members are (located in the Saint Bernadette area). To top that off there's cobwebs & bugs all over the crypts constantly but if you were to add anything to the marble on the crypt (ie tape a photo or card) they tear it down and throw it out because god forbid you ruin the marble.....but then there's the water damage to the carpet and ceiling, plus the light fixtures not working due to the leaks. Boy are the priorities out of whack. I can't say much for my family members that are in the outside areas because I'm too pissed about the inside being treated like it was nothing. Now we are having major storms. Hope the roof isn't collapsing but wouldn't be surprised due to the lack of repairs I have plenty of photos and videos (with time stamps) to prove that nothing has been done. read more

Me and my wife visited my mother and my grandmother's grave sites and I was not happy at the condition of the cemetery sites. The lawn was poorly maintained, a lot of bird crap everywhere, bald spots in the lawn, some tombstones were not properly affixed. I understand this is a large cemetery, but it should be far better maintained then in it's present condition. read more

A good friend of mine is buried here and its been a few years since Ive been back to pay my respects but I have a trip coming up very soon and it is on my check list of things that I need to do. I'm not really sure on how to comment on a cemetery as I wasn't exactly paying attention to details of the area while the ceremony was going on . I'm going to attempt to describe my recent visit to Holy Cross Cemetery. My first impression was "wow, this place is enormous." I was very impressed with their traffic management protocol as we had several dozen cars following the hearse. As we wound our way to my cousin's final resting place, I noticed that the grounds were well kept. When we arrived at the mausoleum, cemetery staff were very respectful and patient. They were very careful in placing the casket in the mausoleum. They waited until the family left to seal it. As in all final resting places, this particular spot is one of the best.
