The property is peaceful and less crowded than nearby campgrounds, making it ideal for relaxing by the river. This place had potential if we weren't nickeled and dimed for little things... First off, there are 8 pages of rules and policies (font 12) that you'll need to read which we read with a highlighter given previous Yelp comments. And yes, you will be reminded at every communication that you need to read them. Including a text the day before you check in. If you ask any questions, they'll send it to you like you've seen in other Yelper's reviews. Unlike hotels or AirBnBs, be aware that the rate is for just 2 people. They will charge $50 more per person. We had a little one with us and we were charged $50 more per night. (And yes, they will meet you at check-in to make sure you don't bring extra people!) Our cottage had a queen bed and a sofa bed. Presumably with the extra charge, we would have been given enough towels and linen for 3. Nope. There were towels for 2. And the sofa bed was a bare mattress with a throw without a sheet. We didn't complain since we brought our own linen. Despite being charged a cleaning fee of $50, know that you will still need to haul all of your trash to a trash bin 50 - 100 feet of your cottage. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the place is tired and old: filthy floors, dusty baseboards, tight shower knobs, weak AC, broken porch light... The deck didn't have the nice furniture that was in the photos. Yes, it's river front but getting down to the river is treacherous with many jagged rocks and makeshift steps - exercise caution with kids and elderly. There are no banks, just jagged rocks. We were here in April and it is very, very buggy - lots of mosquitoes and big flying bugs were found in the house every night. Just one screen door. No screens on any of the windows or front door. Beware - they are sticklers with checking out. We left the cottage on time but decided to take a few last minute photos near the river. After paying $2000 for 2 cottages for 3 nights, we were charged - after Danika / Sherry gave us a discount - an additional $25 for not having left the premises on time! We would not recommend this place and certainly will not be visiting again. read more

We spent 4 delightful nights in the Romantic River Studio. Comfy king bed, shaded deck overlooking the river, and well appointed kitchen space with sky light. Temps were warm enough (2nd week in Sept) at night that we could fall asleep to the sounds of the river. Walking distance to small market, and nice hiking trails along the river (Marshall Gold State Park and Monroe Ridge Trail ware an enjoyable walks). read more

Our cottage was beautifully upgraded while maintaining the charm of yesteryear. We chose this cottage because of its proximity to the river and the views were outstanding. We loved our stay at Coloma Cottages and hope to return. read more

5 Stars for Nancy, Best Customer Service ever! Coloma Cottages is a private resort on the river. There are a few different cottages you can rent, we were in # 6 Riverhaus. Two days prior to arriving you will receive an email with current info on how to check in. You will basically text the manager, Nancy, 30 minutes prior to arrival to get your code for the security gates. Once you enter she will be there to greet you and get you settled in. The Riverhaus is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage. You have a front porch under the roof with a couple of benches. There is a living room with a couch (pulls out to a bed), a fully stocked kitchen of pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc. The kitchen counter has seating for 2, but there is no actually dining table inside. The bedrooms are small but have comfortable beds, and the bathroom has a small counter so there is not a lot of room for stuff. Great water pressure though! There is an a/c unit in the living room and TV's but no service. There is Roku in the bedroom and DVD's and VHS tapes to watch in the living room. Good wifi thoughout. There is a small back porch with a table and 4 chairs to eat at and it has an umbrella. There is normally a charcoal BBQ that you can use, however because of the fire risk being high we were not able to BBQ. There is also a laundry room on site if you are staying longer term. You are on the river, and there is some access, though it is rocky, no beach area Positives: *Nancy! She is wonderful, super great personality and always willing to help *Kitchen has lots of items in it, I did not feel like I was missing anything *Beds and pillows were comfortable *Great water pressure Could have been better: *We did not know about the not being able to use the BBQ so we spent money on charcoal and food and then could not use it. Great place for our family reunion. We booked the whole place. Raft in and out river access. Beautiful well supplied rooms with full kitchens. AC worked great. Everything was updated and very clean. Super fun with games, campfire ring, and a beautiful river. read more

Love going to Coloma cottages to get a little mini getaway from the city and reality! I have stayed in all of the cottages and go at least a few times a year and all the cottages are very comfortable and they have everything stocked that you will be needing for your entire stay. You can get your groceries right there in placerville only 20 minutes away! Many different wildlife around and on the property! Danika and Nancy are amazing at accommodating with you at anything you need during your stay! There's so many things you can do while on your stay at Coloma cottages like gold mining, fishing, river rafting during the summer, and many different little trails and cool little old cemeteries! My kids enjoy going every time it never gets old for them! This is my #1 go to spot for my mini getaways and always will be!!very clean cottages inside and out always sanitized before you arrive! read more

A few cottages located near the river in a "summer camp" type setting. Cottage appeared to be freshly painted and was in good repair, but had a slight musty smell (which is not uncommon for an older cottage in a rural setting). Since neighboring properties are private, hiking is limited to a nearby state park. It does allow dogs which is why we chose it. View was of owners storage and parking, river is not visible. Stay was ok, but guests should be warned of owners policies. Here are some photos of her house handbook. Which include many potential fines that can total over $1000. Fines are for silly things like cooking bacon. Stay was OK, but guests should be knowledgeable. I've never encountered anything like this in many years of travel across the US and abroad in much nicer places lol. We are a professional family of 5 adults, so the only fine we incurred was late check in. Despite paying extra for 5 person occupancy, beds are unmade and insufficient towels. (This was stated in the manual which you receive after booking.) We were also forced to pay for a guest that may be stopping by in advance or owner would not give the gate code. It was refunded after departure once they observed our guest didn't arrive. The only place I've ever been charge a guest fee is at an all inclusive resort and it was when my guest arrived, not in advance. This was by far least welcoming place my family has ever stayed in. Host did leave a bottle of wine, so I guess all is well. It's an OK place to stay, but I feel guests should know what they are dealing with prior to booking. read more

After staying at American River Resort for years, not knowing there were other choices, I stayed at the cottages and I am so a fan from now on. Cute, quaint places with all the things you need to enjoy a 4 day weekend. Me and 5 others stayed on #7. Next year, I'm looking forward to going with only one or 2 others and staying in one of the smaller cottages. Anyway, they have horseshoes, firepit, river access in a few spots so you don't have to crowd with others. I wanted to find a quiet, unplugged place to take my wife.....let me tell you first and foremost WE STRUCK GOLD!!!! When we drove in we were literally 100 feet from the beautiful American River! This property was truly breath taking and our cabin was perfect and spotless Besides finding this amazing private paradise, the Owner Danika and manager Nancy went above and beyond accommodating us with anything we needed. Everyone was so welcoming and we feel we made new friends! It was nice to just zen out listening to the rushing river or have a couple cocktails and throw some horseshoes. I loved this place. Our cottage was so quaint with full kitchen and living room. It was clean and decorated so pretty. We sipped coffee, listened and watched the river, while lounging on the front patio. It was quiet with beautiful surroundings. Host was amazing!!! Definitely will return. read more

I stayed at the Coloma Cottages in June 2018. The cabin we stayed in smelled like mold and was not properly cleaned. The host did not accommodate our requests to remedy the situation and was otherwise rude and difficult to deal with. I would never return to stay at this property and would not recommend it to anyone else. It was a truly unfortunate weekend. And in response to the false comment that she has now written below, I only noticed two years later she left a "miserable" and unnecessary review on Airbnb. So I thought it would be helpful to others to know how our stay at this place really was. read more

We booked 2 nights here based on proximity to our rafting trip on the American River, which we could walk to. Luckily for us, the cottages were more than just a close sleeping point. We stayed in the Rio Azul, which was a great 2 bedroom 1 bath cottage, neat and clean. Excellent hosts that checked us in and made everything convenient along the way, including giving us tips for our stay. We were walking distance to the Marshall Gold Discovery Park, American Whitewater Expeditions, Argonaut Cafe, a Pioneer Cemetery with founding members of Coloma buried there, an old jail and much more. Waking up to deer and going to bed after playing horseshoes on the property only a stone's throw away from the river was also amazing. Definitely worth the stay and we will be coming back in the future! read more

We really enjoyed our stay at Coloma cottages. It's a lovely location on the American River. Our cottage was very clean and we had a lovely view of the river from our back deck. Our kitchen had everything that we needed for cooking our simple meals. Our hosts were very nice as well. It was great for our two families to have the time together to decompress. The only couple of things I would suggest is an updated list of local restaurants with new Covid hours and perhaps a list of local stores that sell raft floats (or suggestion to bring your own) as well as good entry and exit points near the cottages. The notes about life vests were right on target. Make sure to stock up on groceries before town. I hope that we're able to come back it was a wonderful discovery! read more

Conveniently located on the river and just a few hundred feet from American Whitewater Expeditions, the Coloma Cottages is a serene, comfortable, quiet place to relax as well as recover from our full day of rafting. The service was outstanding, from the time we first called them on the phone, to all the friendly help we received from Nancy both before and while we were there. (She is extremely responsive to texts, has a very sweet energy, and helped make us feel at home.) For the price of an ordinary, relatively noisy hotel room we had the comfort of a well appointed, attractive, homey place to stay. By the way, this is not a "rustic" place; our cottage was solidly built and well insulated with a full kitchen, and plenty big for the two of us. read more

We had a wonderful weekend at Coloma cottages. We were a big group bringing in the new year together. We had a wonderful time at this beautiful location. The cottages were perfect! The grounds are just magical..can't get better than waking up to the sound of the American river gushing by...The bed was extremely comfortable in cottage 7. Kitchen is well stocked with gadgets,etc. There is no dishwasher so make sure to leave the dishes clean for the next guests. There was an issue with cottage 4 but the host was available on the ground and did her best to solve the issues. Host is very friendly and made us feel at home here. read more

I have returned to Coloma Cottages because I loved it there the first time. We stayed in Riverhaus first and loved it. We stayed in Rio Azul the second time and loved it too! Both are 2-bedrooms and both have fully equipped kitchens. Also, if you want to barbeque, Webers provided, as well as other types of units for barbequeing. All you need to bring is food and wine! It's so peaceful and calm here. No cable is a good reason why. My grandkids love it here because we are fully engaged as a family. We play board games, listen to music where they teach this grandma new dance moves, we write and discuss anything. I show them how to make their favorite recipes. There is Netflix and we all agree on a movie to watch after dinner. It's a 20-30 minute drive and easy access to Apple Hill. It's a quick walk to Coloma where you can visit the Argonaut Restaurant, which is such a cute place to sit outside and have some tasty food, of course, their delicious wine. Try the homemade lemon ice cream. Delicious! We saw a family of deer along the way. I can't say enough about Danika, our host. She is simply lovely. She and her family have taken this property and turned it into a slice of heaven on earth. She is wonderful. Another great plus for me, I get to bring my dog Louie. Only $10 a night for him. Again, I love it here and I'm planning my next trip to Coloma Cottages next. read more
