We stayed at a tent site at Coloma Resort and had a great time overall. The site was right by the river but tucked into a quieter, more secluded stretch, not the main part of the river, which made it peaceful and a bit more private. There was a pre-built tent frame that we were able to pitch our tent under, which was spacious and really helpful for shade. The ground was decomposed granite, which made it tough to get tent stakes in. Grass would've been nicer, less dusty and more comfortable, but we made it work. The site had water and electric hookups, which was a nice surprise for a tent spot, and the restrooms were super clean and close by. The river was beautiful. We went swimming, it was shallow but fast-moving, which the kids absolutely loved. We also saw a bunch of people tubing down the river, which looked like a blast. There's a small general store on-site that opens at 9am, basic supplies, drinks, firewood, etc. Super convenient. All in all, a lovely campground. Despite the dusty ground, we'd definitely go back again.

This is the most amazing campground. The staff is amazing, friendly and helpful. Campsites and restrooms are always clean and there's lots to do and learn about gold mining history

Always comfortable stay with good campers nearby, family friendly and love the fact that you can walk to town and the museum. Deer can been seen in the evening and the river makes for a calming moment

I've been coming here since I was a kid, almost every year for the gold rush reenactment. They have done lots of work, some is good, and some, not so much. I guess the old store burned down, which is shame because the new store has none of the charm, and about a tenth of items, as the old store. There used to be way more little nicknacks and kitchy camping gifts and things. They also got rid of the chicken coop and the little old west town. All the old facades of blacksmith shop, banks and hotels are gone. Not a single place to take corny old times photos and that's a shame. On the positive side, they have expanded a lot! Where a ropes course used to be they now have all sorts of lodging options. There are little cabins, glamping tents, bunk houses, a full cottage with deck, tent spots, rv spots and even two covered wagons. It is not cheap, but they have really cleaned up the property and we saw the crew cleaning leafs and taking trash constantly. It's right in Coloma on the American River, so you really can't be the location. It will get cold in the winter, but that doesn't stop people from rafting.

Been in this river several times, but to the resort itself- we had a wonderful time! On our first night, we slept with no beddings which we should have been told. Walmart is about 17 mins fr the resort but its okay. Support after hours are through text only, in which they are very responsive

We were just there two weeks ago and camp fires were fine. The river is a little higher, but it's not crazy high. The river is definitely running fast due to snowmelt. We deal with a slight mosquito problem at night, but nothing really bad.

    Are campfires allowed again?

Hello T R, Campfires are not allowed just yet. After these rains that are predicted this coming week hopefully the ban will be lifted.

Hello, can you access the river right from site 38 or is there a slope and it has to be accessed elsewhere? Also, how is the river level this year? Is it swimmable or rough? Thanks!

Ive seen the questions about WIFI , but how is cell phone service? ATT and Sprint? Thank you in advance!

Hello Shellbee, Verizon has always been the best service here. AT&T and Sprint seemed to have beefed up their service in this area recently. I have not heard complaints about their service lately.

How is WiFi now these days? Planning on making a camping trip during COVID while working and doing distance learning for the kids.

Just as bad as always. No way you could use internet for distant learning. It cuts out constanily.

How cold is it at night? I'm bringing my 3 month old baby and am worried about how cold it gets at night. We will be inside one of the cabins and will bring a small electric heater just in case.

Well it is in the high 90s to low 100's during the day right now. The nights are in the 70s. I would worry more about your baby being too warm than too cold right now. If you are in a Miners, Upper Boomtrown, Bunkhouse or South Fork Cabin they…

I went to the front desk four separate times during normal business hours and never once found it open. I had a time-sensitive question and was unable to get help, and calls to the front desk also went unanswered. On our last day, we needed assistance locating the dump station. When we went to the front office, there was still no one available. We also encountered other guests actively searching for staff and unable to find anyone, which makes it clear this isn't an isolated issue. The lack of basic amenities was also disappointing--there is no WiFi or laundry on-site. While the location is beautiful, it seems to be the main reason this place stays in business, as the customer service and amenities do not meet expectations. The bathrooms were acceptable, but the shower pressure was extremely low, which made it difficult to use--especially for anyone with thick or textured hair.

There are so many areas for guests to explore and enjoy - many of our guests raved to us about the beautiful, serene venue. The river provides such a soothing backdrop and the whole site feels very private and secluded. We really loved that our guests could book overnight camping, and we also opted for the breakfast burrito option on Sunday morning, which was a big hit and a really delicious, bountiful spread. Laura, who was our primary point of contact, is a dream to work with - just genuinely one of the nicest people I've ever come across, and so accommodating and responsive (which is exactly what you hope for when you're planning a wedding). Our wedding was very DIY and decor-forward, and Laura was so great about scheduling site visits with us so we could plan and take measurements. THEREFORE, I searched ALL the YELP! photos I posted: I found a few photos dated 1/5/2019 as PROOF I did write my reviews for both locations. Disappointingly, ALL my photos AND reviews for James Marshall's Monument and Coloma State Park event MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED AFTER 2019! UNHAPPY! Anyway, in June 2022, I attended a Military Funeral I personally arranged at James Marshall's Monument for my deceased Army friend who passed away plus, instrumentally preventing his family from spending an egregious, heinous sum for funeral expenses, i.e., I contacted the Coloma State Park's Head Supervisor Ranger on my friend's family's behalf. Blessed, the Head Park Ranger Supervisor contacted my friend's family a couple days later who only had to pay $75.00 for reserving James Marshall's Monument location for my friend's Military funeral! The location presided a PRIVATE, dignified, Military funeral which involved the US Army Color Guards who fired off a 21-Gun Salute for my deceased Army friend, ample parking provided for all attending the Military Funeral, conveniently located picnic tables for food/libations setup, and more importantly, an easy, short stroll to James Marshall's Monument where the 21-Gun Salute was presided. My friend's family were so grateful to Coloma State Park's Head Park Ranger Supervisor for allowing presiding a Military funeral which was quite a distance from the Coloma State Park's American River parking lot. Reiterating, reserving the James Marshall's Monument location for my friend's family and all who attended my friend's Military Funeral, it was so PRIVATE, awesome, easy, uncomplicated set up due to the picnic tables for the food and libations were conveniently adjacent to the clean restrooms, and overall, a gorgeous, tranquil, serene, appropriate location presiding a somber, dignified, Military funeral. Finally, presiding a Military Funeral at James Marshall's Monument for my friend's family will always be remembered and revered. Best of all, all who attended my friend's Military funeral have ALL returned exploring James Marshall's Monument--again, James Marshall's log cabin, checking the construction updates for both St. John's Catholic Church and Emmanuel Church, Sutter's Mill, gold panning the American River, sent snail mail from the Coloma Post Office, ate at my friend, Noah's Argonaut Cafe, and hiked all the trails, too! BTW: Since I'm 100% Service-Connected Vietnam Veteran possessing a Veteran's Distinguished Park Pass, reserving James Marshall's Monument would be NO FEE for me!
