I usually have a good meal here. I was in tonight and had the broiled captain's platter. It came with a flounder filet, stuffed clam, three shrimp and a few bay scallops. I had a side of rice and Italian style zucchini. The filet and clam were very tasty, the shrimp were good but a little over cooked. The bay scallops were not edible whatsoever. They had an off taste and were like chewing an eraser. I would suggest they increase the price and get better quality sea scallops instead of the cheaper bay scallops. OK, so it's a diner after all so maybe I should cut them some slack. However, having gone to this diner for many years for all different meals and seeing their recent renovation, I somewhat expected the food to be still as good as it used to be. Not true. The meal was bland- soup (Navy bean) was flavorless, the mashed potatoes were cold, the hot meatloaf sandwich was uninspiring. Everything needed seasoning. Thankfully, the Diet Pepsi wasn't a problem. Service was slow and inattentive. Seems as if staff like chatting among themselves. What used to be a friendly place where you were greeted like family has evolved into an impersonal "oh, I guess we have to serve you" experience. Oh, and the prices are inflated by about 20% above the rest of the market. I guess they have to recoup their renovation costs. read more

This is the 2nd time that friends and I stopped to eat lunch at this diner. It is also the 2nd time we ended up sick in our stomachs. We will NOT be going back. So I always said I wouldn't go back to this place because of the terrible experience from my first go round. I asked my boyfriend to bring me breakfast while I was at work and he went to this diner. I didn't know where he was going to get it from. When I opened it and asked where did he get it from I was amazed. I meant to do this review on Saturday when I got the food but never got around to it. I had to do this review though. I left a bad one before and this is a good one. The food not only was good but it looked good. I don't know maybe they have a new cook or the cook 5 months ago was having a bad day. I am only giving three stars because of my first experience. I've been to this diner several times and never had a problem with anything except their slightly inflated prices, but after today's visit I will never go back. We were a party of 4 ordering breakfast. The food was fine, the waitress was nice and attentive, our experience was like any other time we've eaten there. The check came and we took it to the register and requested to split it. Three different waitresses freaked out about splitting it, then called the elderly Greek lady who is usually the hostess and cashier. She gave us a hard time about splitting it, was struggling to do the math by hand instead of punching the numbers into the register, then when someone in our party pointed out she was being over charged for her portion the lady said "you're mean, I make no money" ....since when is it acceptable, let alone professional to insult a patron of your business. Wonderful service! Stayed at the Hilton garden inn near airport and we wanted to get breakfast at a local diner. We drove to colonie and were so happy we did! Excellent food, reasonably priced and everyone was so warm and kind! Immediately made conversations with the local guests. The owners are so sweet and make you feel right at home! Home fries were a hit! Bacon eggs Delishhhh! I also loved their pancakes, my sister said they tasted better than her waffle! You know you've found a great restaurant when the place becomes the baseline for all other comparisons. I have been looking for a diner place to replace my Jim's Restaurant in Rochester. I found Uncle John Diner in Cohoes, but it's in Cohoes, which is a little too far for me. Then I serendipitously found Colonie Diner. This is a regular place of mine for breakfast and all other diners I've tried since Colonie have not come close. Saturday is the best day to come because of the all-star line up. Both Kathy and Ronda are amazing in their attentive and gregarious service. It's like a LBJ and Wayde combo. You can't go wrong with having either one. The bottom of my coffee cup never sees daylight because of the amazing service you get here. And that's not an easy feat with my coffee drinking. Now the food. I guess the price isn't cheap but it isn't expensive. I usually leave $10 for everything but that's with a very reasonable tip. Compared to the amount of food you get, it's really not an issue at all. I'm full until dinner most of the time. I usually get the two eggs which comes with home fries and a choice of bacon, ham, corned beef hash, and sausage. First and foremost, the home fries are delicious! The well-cooked potatoes with a slight layer of crunchiness makes it one of the best I've had in Albany. It's up there with Uncle John's and that's saying a lot! I've had bacon and corned beef hash on separate occasions. The bacon comes out the way I like it: crunchy and chewy at the same time. They also don't skimp you out on the amount either. On days when I'm hungrier, I get the corned beef hash. I guess it's from a can (not a connoisseur of corned beef), but it's a great combination to the eggs and home fries. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are diners and then there are inspirations. This place inspires me to be a morning person. I look forward to going to this place every week, and there aren't many places that can do that for me. read more

It's a diner. I had a "fried chicken" salad (basically almost a Cobb salad, but no avocado, and they used mixed greens instead of iceberg). It was good. Interestingly, for a diner, they offer the usual variety of salads- Greek, Chef's, Ceasar but no actual Cobb. we ended up coming here after attempting to go to the gateway diner (i know! what?? after my last visit prompted a poor review?. yeah. but robert and rox called and invited us out to help soak up some martini's from the night before. so i was just goin with the flow) and there was nary a parking space available. as we accepted the inevitable - no greasy gateway food for us today, we drove on in the hopes of a shiny magical grease palace appearing suddenly in front of us. as we drove towards Some Hopeful Destination i began with the statement 'i don't know any diners. we don't eat at them' and then i said, well, except for MAD - followed by why we didn't want to go there, then 'oh, there is also Dirty Dan's, that place is the Best.' we then discussed all of our other favorite places for such a time - manory's, a place called Bob's in watervliet (i think that is the name) and from there we branched out. and still just kept driving straight. rox remembered the place over by the mall and this place, there were no turns involved so we came here. and it turns out to be a pretty good choice. nothing special but the service was very friendly and accommodating - even with all of our pain in the ass requests. it also filled up 10 minutes after we got there - to the brim, no seats left, and we still got good and friendly service. the hash was from a can but still tasty and the rest of the food was yummy and not too greasy - no one came home and needed to go directly to lie down. i don't know that we will make the haul again as we discussed the other farther reaches places that we needed to visit (the place in altamont, the dairy barn on the outskirts of troy, a good place in saratoga...) but if we somehow get caught on rte 5 and need a good quick answer to our grumbly bellies, we know we won't regret coming here. read more

Were regulars here for our Saturday breakfast. Typical Greek run diner. Nothing overall fancy. The difference is the food is freshly cooked to order and not all the badness you get with eating fast food. If your looking for a sit down meal without the high cost and better quality. Absolutely gross! The windows, the salt and pepper holders, sugar holders, silverware, etc. places make mistakes, like the two hairs found in the food on my dads plate, I get it, stuff happens, but then when you begin examining the stuff on your table and realize that absolutely everything is gross, you realize it prob wasent a mistake. Cleaning the facility where this owner feeds the community out of is not by any means a necessity to him. It's give me your money and have a nice day!!! I will never go back. I would've definitely at least given four stars if not five (because the food was good as far as diner food can be) if not for the fact that the menu was misleading and the food is overpriced for breakfast. We definitely were mislead by the 'build your own omelette,' which was priced at six dollars, and should've been an additional two dollars for egg whites. What I found out was that means that you're paying eight dollars for JUST egg whites (The menu made it look like you were actually paying for an omelette, not just the eggs) before you even add anything else to it. I spent $18 on breakfast -- egg white omelette with some vegetables and cheese, a side of sausage which was supposed to be $1.29 according to the menu (but, they said, that was only for sausage going into an omelette and not on the side) and a coffee. Oy. Good food but be prepared to pay a hefty price for breakfast. read more

My son-in-laws parents were in from South Africa and wanted to go to an American Diner. We stopped here and they ordered a couple of sandwiches for their dinner. My wife ordered the rib-eye steak, medium. It came cooked beyond well done, it looked and tasted like flank steak. It came with shrimp that was so over-cooked that it was like eating a super-ball, the difference being that a super-ball at least has a flavor to it. The sides came 10 minutes after the steak and she had to ask for some sour cream. I ordered lasagna, now I've had lasagna in Italian restaurants as well as other diners. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever had IN MY LIFE, and I am almost 60 years old. It was pasta with b-grade ricotta cheese and ground beef, covered in what looked and tasted like tomato soup. Maybe they make good breakfasts but I can tell you that what we ordered, all 8 of us, was collectively the worst food that anyone has ever served and had the nerve to charge for. When we asked the poor waitress to bring our complaints to the man who was, from my best guess, the manager and she stood in the back of the place with another waitress and they looked as if they were scared to tell him. I wouldn't recommend this place to a starving man. I will never go there again and will tell all my fellow employees and friends to avoid this place like the plague. read more

BEWARE!!!!! I went to The Colonie Diner tonight for dinner and got Chicken Vista which is a chicken breast stuffed with broccoli and mozz cheese. After eating 6-10 bites I noticed that the inside of the chicken breast was completely raw!!!!! I should have noticed sooner but was I was talking with my companion and didn't until I consumed about 1/4 of it. When I say raw, I mean completely RAW. The waitress took it back and I ordered a roast beef sandwich instead (which by the way I couldn't eat because I lost my appetite). Of course they refused to comp my meal and when I addressed it with the manager/owner (older Greek lady) she made no apologies but instead waved her hand in my face telling me that I shouldn't worry because it wont make me sick! I had a friend that was served raw chicken years ago and he had to have 1/2 his intestines removed and came very close to dying! YOU CAN'T SERVE RAW CHICKEN .. IT WILL KILL SOMEONE! And, they have the nerve to still charge me for my meal! DO NOT go here....even if it was an isolated case, the fact that the owner treated me like it was my fault and was waving her hand in my face telling me I wont get sick from raw chicken tells me that that they could care less about their customer's and the HEALTH of their customers. I WILL be contacting the NYS Department of Health as well. One last thing, I was raised in a restaurant. My family owned a diner in Niskayuna, NY for nearly 20 years, so I know the business and know how the Health Dept. monitors stuff like this.
