Mixed review. Pro- The staff is very sweet and very accommodating, and truly try to be helpful. Location easily accessible in Kapolei Cons- my hair was bleached (to remove any remaining box dye) and dyed over. The final color did NOT look any different than my original hair color and I am very disappointed in the time and money spent on it. There is a very subtle difference in direct sunlight but it's barely noticeable. I can chalk that up to me not choosing to go light enough, fine. I was too disappointed by the end result that I didn't notice that the stylist also dyed the right side of my face (about an inch from my hairline to by cheek wide and about 3 inches down in length) and I received a couple chemical burns from the bleach! I now have a patch of hair dye on my face that I am hoping will fade away soon. I didn't notice this until I got home and pulled my hair back behind my ears since it was styled down when I left the salon (covering it). I've tried desperately to cover it with makeup and pull my hair down to try to cover it. My chemical scalp burns I noticed when I ran my fingers through my hair and felt something hard, crusty, and a bit sensitive to touch. This tracks since it was also the part that I felt a strange sensation during the bleaching and I told the stylist that I felt. The color on the majority of my hair after the bleach (not roots) was a lovely brown that I should had just opted for. Instead I was told the color I chose to dye it would be slightly darker than the bleached color which seemed fine. But when my hair was finally finished, I had to hold back tears of disappointment. Overall, they are very nice and sweet but I am beyond sad and disappointed with the end result. I want to go cry some more. read more

I came to this salon on May 2nd 2026. I was unhappy with my service and their response after I told them I was unhappy. I came into my appointment around 9:15am. My appointment was at 9:30am. My stylist was working on someone else's hair, doing a full on color right before my appointment. I had to wait 45 minutes to an hour before getting my hair done, despite my appointment. I brushed this off thinking it was fine, it really isn't. Stay on your appointment times. Not only that, I sent my stylist photos of how I want my hair to look before the appointment. I'll post the inspiration photos. By the end of my appointment, it did not look like my inspiration photos. I told my stylist, I didn't like the color, and I didn't like how my roots weren't blending in to the rest of my hair. Before this, she told me "I like how your hair gives off an ombré effect!" what ombré effect? My hair goes from completely dark to having some color. Then, she proceeded to tell me, "Sit in the color for a week, and if you still don't like it come back." Come back and do what? Pay another $250?? And I want to give some context: She did my roots, and my roots didn't lift after. But did she communicate why? Did she do anything to fix it afterwards? No! She didn't, despite my communications that I did NOT like how my hair looked. She could've told me that the integrity of my hair COULD NOT SUSTAIN the color I wanted. And THEN we could've done a different color. but instead I got absolutely no communication and walked out the salon. On top of that, I contacted the hair salon for a refund. They said they don't do refunds, but they do "solutions" to make it right. I was like ok, cool! They can do something about my terrible looking hair. I told them all my concerns, about how I just wanted my roots to look the same as the rest of my hair. They told me yeah sure, for about $145 more. I was confused, because I thought they did "solutions" to make it right, but instead I have to PAY, to make it right. And they proceeded to tell me I'm asking for a free service, and "we don't do that" That's so disgusting to hear. So disgusting to think I'm asking for a free service, when my stylist DID my roots, it did NOT pull through, and I just wanted my hair to be the same color? Is that too much to ask for? Then they proceeded to tell me, "I have been professional and kind in explaining the situation. I apologize you aren't happy with the outcome." It's not professional to say you've been kind, and then say "sorry" for the outcome. Absolutely disgusting behavior from this salon. Then they attempted to contact me to "make things right" again. Do you genuinely think I want a service from you after that interaction? No. Absolutely not. Finally, I walked into work on the monday of that week. I was posting on my story the day before my appointment talking about how excited I am to get my hair done! and my coworkers saw it. Then they saw me, and told me "your hair looks completely the same as before." Do NOT go to this salon. I strongly advise against everyone else going to it. Overdue review for this salon and wish I could give a -0 stars. I wanted to spare any other potential customers from the worst experience my daughter had. She goes to school on the mainland and every break, when she comes home she requests for me to book her a hair appointment. Since we moved to the West side and have had one awesome experience here, I decided to book her a Hair Color Balance & Hair cut. The appointment was confirmed for Sunday, 21 Dec 2025 at 10:30AM with Cassidy Blaine K. Unciano. When my daughter was dropped off to the salon a few minutes before her appointment time, I failed to let her know that Cassidy was who she had an appointment with. Apparently, she was serviced by Angel Hoyle Kamakahi. From past experience, her hair services typically take two to two and a half hours max. However, this day was definitely not the norm and mind you it was a Sunday and she was the only customer there! By the time she was done, we were rung up a minute shy of 5 hours of my daughter sitting there with this stylist. Before the service started, my daughter showed her a picture of the color she wanted, which was chocolate brown. Unfortunately, the end result was her leaving there with red tints and no sign of it being chocolate brown as she requested. In addition, within the 5 hours she wasted away sitting there, she did not get a hair cut, which I requested for the appointment. When my daughter pointed it out, Angel started to get defensive about it and as she was ringing her up, she had an attitude and even before I could offer whatever tip I wanted to, she decided to not even take a tip. I had a hunch that the service would be a waste because when I came in around the two and a half hour point, Angel snarled at me asking if I had an appointment and when I told her I was there for my daughter, I sat down waiting. My daughter sent me a text to let me know that we could come back later to pick her up, which was another two and a half hours of waiting. Overall, this was not the service I had expected since the last time she went and was serviced by Kayla a few months prior, my daughter was extremely happy the way it turned out. This salon was a convenience, but had I known it would be an overall disaster, I could have saved myself $312.04. After a few days, I could tell that my daughter wasn't satisfied, so I decided to make it right and booked her at Dada Salon where I should have gone to begin with and save the $312.04 I wasted on the horrible service she got from Angel. Also, I received an automated email message soliciting for a vote for 2026 Best of Hawaii contest. After what we went through, with the message boasting that they won first place in 2025 Best of Hawaii with KITV Island News was hilarious!!! As a warning for all who are thinking about trying this place out, I would think twice. I waited a few days to rate this because I was so upset the day of the service. I requested low lights to cover the gray around my temples and then highlights all over. I've had this same color scheme done for about 25 years now. My experience was dreadful. Sat in the chair for 4 hours when everywhere else typically did the same job in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The color was absolutely wrong and came out as reddish orange and zero blond highlights can be found. I typically pay $200 for the color and here I was charged $300. I did tip 15% out of a sense of duty. I actually wanted my time and money back. Lastly. I have NEVER suffered a skin reaction to the chemicals until this visit. I really liked my stylist I do want to say that she was very nice and very professional...but the quality of the products being used here at this salon is scary and not recommended. I have done many root touch ups at other salons and have never experienced a burning sensation on my scalp immediately when product is being applied. My stylist did wash off the dye soon as I told her what I was feeling and she did a swatch test on my hand to ensure the next dye she was going to use would not cause the same reaction which I appreciated very much. However, after leaving and going home for the day to shower I noticed that my scalp had red Burns all over my head under the hair, I also noticed I lost hair, and the dye stains all over under my bangs that were hidden were really noticeable. This was not a $150 plus tip service I got a root touch up and bangs cut and you can see the burns, the greys that are showing.. I really liked the stylist but the work I paid for and the result is not something anyone should ever experience at a salon. The stylist did mention this same reaction happened to another client recently.. so anyone looking to try this salon out beware that the burning sensation can cause burns to your skin and hair loss you won't notice unless you throughly check your whole head before leaving. From the moment I sat in her chair (30 minutes after my scheduled appointment), until I was done getting highlight, root touch up and hair cut (5 1/2 hours later), she berated me loudly and made me feel like I was a problem for her. She told me I was wasting her time and she was trying to make money. She also charge me more than she quoted me and I agreed to. I wish I wasn't writing this because I hate to be this person. I normally only leave raving reviews for things. Today I took my daughter in for a hair cut. My daughter is 11, and wanted long layers. I called to schedule a time to come in. I got there on time, and the stylist started promptly cutting my daughter's hair. she didn't wash it first, nor did she take the time to detangle it. I watched her make faces and shake her head everytime her comb got stuck on a tangle. My daughter's hair is thin and straight, so it tangles easily. About 30 minutes into the cut, a person walks in asking if she could be serviced as a walk in. The stylist cutting my daughter's hair agreed and had my daughter sit in a chair NEXT to the walk in while the walk in got her hair conditioned and massaged. My daughter sat there waiting her turn for what was already her time and was already being worked on. Why does she have to take a back seat for her service? Because she's a kid? The stylist had her sitting there while she took the random walk in client from the shampoo bowl to the chair and started giving her a haircut. She even finished it. The receptionist had to come and wash my daughter's hair. I could tell she was trying to buy time for the stylist to finish the random ladies hair. ATP I'm pissed. I'm paying $80 for a haircut and regardless of her age, as a client she should've been able to have been COMPLETED with her service before servicing a whole new client. The walk in is the one who's supposed to wait. Who doesn't know that? The entire l hair cut ended up taking 2 hours. 2 hours. For a cut I could've done at home but I WANTED to pay for her to have a good experience! When the receptionist was washing my daughters hair, the stylist walked over and made a gesture with her had going across her neck and making faces and gestures about my daughters hair. This honestly hurt her feelings. And at the end of the service is the cherry on top. To hurt her feelings even more, The stylist tells me that she's so pretty, and then backs up to ask me "IS IT BOY OR GIRL?" Like huh??! I will actually never go back here and highly suggest no one brings their teen in for a nice experience. Just go to Supercuts. I really wanted to give her the experience she deserved. Money wasn't a problem. I don't even think she realizes how rude and unprofessional the whole service was. From her double booking a walk in and making the client wait... And asking me some dumb ass question at the end. I still tipped the stylist. I am also refraining from adding her name to my review. So I hope I don't get some crazy reply from the business. My first review wouldn't accept photos. But this is the result when someone uses 30+ volume bleach and keeps repeating it for 3 hours. I told the stylist my hair requires 40 volume for 15 to 20 minutes, no longer. She used 30. She did foils, removed them and just covered the top of my head with bleach, and put me under the lights. I had no idea it was bleach she kept putting on my hair, she was suppose to do a toner and "root tipping." Needless to say, that never happened, it was all bleach. After she washed the bleach out, she started brushing it and my hair was falling out!!! The color I was left with was yellow with orange roots. I demanded she add a silver color and get me out of there. Ive had breakage before, but never had my hair disintegrate when I touched it. There was so much breakage I look like I had a crew cut. I went out and purchased a $500 wig, but it looks so awkward I can't wear or return it. The owner reached out to me and refunded $100. I wasn't looking for anything. I just want to make sure nobody else goes through what I just went through. It was a costly, humiliating experience and my intention is to keep the public informed that not all positive reviews are posted by actual clients. The owner is now claiming my review is false. Her employee has videos of before and after, so she needs to post them before calling someone a liar. If my hair was so damaged, why would they touch it??? I have short hair, I went in looking for a different color and style, not a crew cut. My hair will grow back, I will have to deal with this for several months, but if someone has an event planned in the near future, don't go near this salon. Salon is under new management.... in all cases this is either extremely good news or the downfall to a business. In this case, unfortunately, I will never be going back to color box. I have written two extremely amazing back to back reviews of this business within the past 6 months. I get my hair trimmed and a deep condition every 3 months. My usual stylist, Tricia, had to leave the island... so I was booked with Amanda at Tricia's recommendation. So, a month ago I called to confirm and was looking forward to my appointment. Then on Sunday, 9/4, I received a text message from Amanda saying that she no longer works at color box but can still see me at her new salon. I told her a polite no thank you, that I will stick with color box... because I had never met her before and I had such great experiences at this location before. Something in the back of my head told me.... maybe I should call color box just in case and make sure my appointment is still there... since Amanda isn't there... so who would be cutting my hair? The worst case scenario happened and she said that my appointment was not there, but she could schedule me with her for noon on that same day I was originally booked for. I was confused that after confirming my appointment last month, I got no notification that my appointment was cancelled and taken off the books. She explained that when a stylist leaves, they take their appointments with them... which is why I got that text from Amanda. This is ultimately on the salon though. Since I book through THEM and not the stylist, the salon should have notified me of the change. So, I hung up the phone and was okay with staying at color box... until I read the most recent reviews of Raquel... specifically the ones from David L & Frieda C. I am normally one to not take negative reviews to heart and try things out for myself, but they were just too specific and said the same thing. That she was micromanaging during appointments and a change in the salon's vibe. Those are major red flags for any business. So, going with my gut, I call back and decide to cancel the appointment. Raquel answered again, and this time her mood went into a total 180 and she was being passive aggressive over the phone when I mentioned cancelling and not rescheduling right then. It is really not a good sign that with new management that most of the old stylist have left, prices have increased, and there are now negative reviews. I am SO glad I decided to go with my gut, and visited Amanda at her new salon down the street. read more

I was really hesitant to make this review. Honestly, I would have rather moved on and just went about my day, looking for a new hair salon. But after reading some of the one-star reviews and having a different heart, I thought to share my own experience and add to the one-star review. I fell in love with this salon in 2017. They were really the best salon I've been to because they, at the time, made you feel wonderful, did hair very well, helped you solve your hair issues, etc. Over the years, there was a lot of turnover, but I paid no mind. I was already invested in this business. However, the quality of service and customer treatment had gone down in recent years, even though the prices went up. It felt like they were pushing more services and spoke irate when you would want to reschedule your hair appointment or reduce the amount of services, even when it's within a reasonable time frame to make some changes. I gave the salon the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately, it's just time to find another place. **I know this review will be met with some pushback, just like the other one-star reviews. Just had a haircut and color by Raquel..and her assistant Kayla...I highly recommend Raquel...Over the years I didn't keep up with getting my hair professionally colored and ended up with several different shades thru-out my hair because I used box color. I Decided on long layers and just going back to my original dark hair color.... Absolutely love the results... My hair is healthy again and I look 5 years younger than when I walked in!!! I showed 6 photos of what I wanted-- very subtle brown highlights well blended into in my dark brown hair.
