Tina is a talented and lovely colorist and hairstylist. I've been going to her for about six years, ever since she was at another salon. I've continued to come back to her for all of my cuts and highlights even though I've moved out of the city. Tina listens to what I'm looking for in the color and cut, knows the latest styles, and is willing to work with me (e.g., low-maintenance style, and don't cut so much that my husband is traumatized). She used extra-gentle products when I was pregnant. I feel that Tina's pricing is fair. She sends me sweet texts a few times a year, like for New Year's and Mother's Day. When I call to set up an appointment, she can usually see me within the next few days or week. I like that the highlights she does start close to the scalp, so they stay longer, and that when I ask for them to be subtle, she can get the effect I'm looking for (in my case, using toner). Tina finishes the appointment with such nice styling that I feel like a movie star when I leave. As of late 2013 / early 2014, Tina is at Casablanca salon on 30th Avenue in Astoria, which is also convenient to the subway, friendly, and outfitted with comfortable chairs and sinks. In 2012/2013, Tina was at Studio 31, a great neighborhood salon opened a few years earlier by the extraordinarily sweet Athena. The place had floor-to-ceiling windows onto 31st Ave, abundant zebra decor, chandeliers, and pop music. They offered to take my coat and to provide water or wine while I was there. My one complaint was that the sinks they wash hair in were pretty uncomfortable, so I would ask for a cushion for my neck. I'm happy to continue to see Tina wherever she works and recommend her highly. read more

I recently had Tina dye my hair from my natural color to a beautiful Pink. I did want something quite a bit different and keeping some of my natural blonde but I went with her proffessional opinion. Tina was amazing!! I have had a digital perm with layers hair style for 7 years and was beyond tired of it. I wanted a drastic change that included some coloring, and based on my fellow Yelpers' recommendation, sought Tina out. Tina is a total professional, and you can tell she really loves what she does. She took a look at my hair and the shape of my face and asked how bold of a look I was ready for. She told me what issues I had with my hair and knew exactly how to work around it. Tina is a god among men. She saved my hair and in turn, my life. She is the Odysseus in this epic tale (and not just because she's Greek). I had such a horrible experience at Beauty Palace in Astoria (29-11 Broadway: please for your own good never step into this establishment) - I initially went because the prices there are cheap but you truly get what you pay for. The hairdressers there are completely inexperienced and the salon totally does not care about their customers. The colorist (if you can call the poor woman that) destroyed my hair - bleached it beyond oblivion and made my virgin hair several shades of orange (I had requested a blonde ombre). My head was covered from root to end in a brass color (the color your urine turns when you get a bad UTI) and it was completely and totally fried. I do not exaggerate that I visited 10 different salons (all very expensive) who told me they were not sure they could fix this hack job - and 2 out of 10 offered to fix it for around $300 dollars each. I'm not a crier, but my hair and my bad credit is all I have - so I was left with a disaster I could not afford to fix, and I cried for several hours and contemplated shaving it all off in a neurotic fit (I had just re-watched Girl Interrupted a few days prior). My mother caught me in the bathroom with a buzzer and snatched it out of my hand stating "your face is too round to pull this off." So after going back to Beauty Palace demanding my $200 dollars back (yeah, I paid $200 for a stint with psychosis), I was told they did not have a return policy and they owed me nothing, so I wished a pox on all of their houses and stormed out. Then proceeded my initially unsuccessful search for a cure to my cranial UTI. And then I found Tina - I called her number and I was told to stop by. So I walked in and immediately she gasped at the sight of me - I told her everything and she kept saying how much of a "complete and total disaster" this was and how terribly bad she felt for me. She told me she would have to do some serious triage and she "usually never fixes other people's mistakes" but she felt so sorry for me. I know this sounds harsh but I have a Balkan mother so Tina actually really comforted me and I could tell from the start she knew what she was talking about. After a grueling 3 hours (which she made as enjoyable as possible - she is vastly entertaining and literally the sweetest woman), I looked in the mirror and to my disbelief I could now fathom letting people look at me again. She not only corrected the disaster but she made my hair look healthy and beautiful. The color correction was truly the best I have ever seen and I honestly thought with what my hair looked like before, I would have to become a mole person and only allow friends and family to visit me in dark underground tunnels. Tina is a hero (and she only charged me $180 for a 3 hour god-damn job!) - I recommend her to anyone and everyone and I now trust her with my life. read more

The Best Hair Color Specialist! I had a bad experience with another stylist in Grand Ave Elmhurst when I had my hair color and hair cut done four days ago. I thought I would be getting a good deal since the prices were cheap and it had good reviews in yelp. My scalp was burned due to too much chemicals used in the hair coloring process. During the procedure I complained about the burning sensation that I felt in my scalp but I was reassured by the staff that it was only normal and it will be gone after 15 minutes. The burning sensation did not go away and I was very nervous that it will damage my scalp. I had my hair colored in salons several times before and I did not have this kind of experience. The color turned out terrible too not the color that I expected. I am asian and I prefer not to color my hair light because it will not match my skin tone. The haircut was badly done, I noticed several strands not completely cut when I got home. I was really depressed because of the outcome and was also embarrassed to come out of the house. Good thing I found tina in yelp. I called her up first thing in the morning. Thankfully, she answered her cellphone even if it was not her work hours yet. She agreed to insert me in her schedule for that day to fix the damage that was done on my hair. She was very accommodating and motherly, I instantly felt relaxed and at ease. During the consultation she listened with patience about my hair history and what color and cut I was looking for, she performed a strand test (which not too many hair stylists do) and Tina gave me her opinion on what color I should go for. I asked her to do what she thought best for my color (dirty blonde with old highlights) and she chose a golden brown base with very subtle and artfully placed highlights.
