It had been a while since I had been and couldn't recall how long and the hair dresser just proceeded to tell me that it had been longer than I was saying and proving me wrong. I couldn't decide how I wanted to style it and asked for suggestions and she just said she doesn't give suggestions. This lasted the entire hair cut. I showed a picture and showed her to do it like that and she said, 'I'm just going to stick to what you said before.' Then I just finally said, 'do whatever you'd like.' I tipped her well because she did a great job, but it was a very uncomfortable experience. Quality work, not quality customer service. Will not be back.

I hadn't gotten my hair done since November of 2019, so I was due for a cut at the very least. After perusing Yelp reviews of different hair salons in the area, I came across Dorene Furtado's work. She had pictures up of the exact hair color and style that I wanted, so I knew I had to contact her right away. Booking with Dorene was easy and seamless through text, and she was able to fit me in on New Years Eve! The salon itself is in the Kaka'ako district. I've only ever been there a couple of times, so driving past all the mural decorated warehouses was so nice during the day. You can definitely see how unique and vibrant of a neighborhood it is. Parking was super easy; Nueve Salon has their own parking lot, and location wise is very easy to find. The salon is clean, bright, and well-kept, and I felt lucky to have been the only person in that day. Dorene took her time to explain what she was going to do, and ensured that she was able to execute exactly what I wanted without damaging my hair. After a couple of hours in the chair, some highlights, and a cut later, I felt lighter and like I had finally had some self care time (a rarity with kids). As I start a new chapter in my life, I decided it's time to throw color into the mix. After discussing the cut I want. He brought out his book with the color options he has. And serendipitously had the color I wanted which is a violet red. My pic includes the before, the cut before styling/color, and the final result the morning after bc by the time we were done, it was night time and I could not get a good picture of the color with regular lights. Danne went over how to care for my hair to help with preventing fade. He provided suggestions for products that would help me achieve this. He welcomes any questions you have. At the time, my other two kids and I were happy with our stylist but she moved back to Idaho, so we started coming to Ota. We love! My younger daughter (wavy hair) usually goes to Roges but very recently scheduled with Destiny. My son goes to Katsu and the both of them just love the styles they get. I go to Roges and I love my haircuts too! In particular I love that my hair grows out so well, and my haircut suits my hair so well that I don't have to use any product if I don't want to because it falls so nicely, Everyone here is just lovely. Very professional, incredibly knowledgeable, super friendly, and so chill. The salon is bumping, but the schedule is always en pointe - no over scheduling! There are a few metered stalls in front and a free parking lot in the rear shared by other businesses in the building, in addition to a lot of neighborhood street parking, particularly if you don't mind a stroll. My haircuts with Mie are always fun and the staff are always encouraging and give great advice on what hair would look good on your face and even adjusting styles to see what would look better! I always get my hair cut by her and she always does an amazing job. I'm always amazed at the precision and skill it takes to pull off the hair styles I want but she never fails to deliver. She also is so good about recommending styling product and heat tools to use if your hairstyle is high-maintenance. Mines is pretty high-maintenance but she always guides you on how to style yourself so that you look good every day not just after your hair appointment! Whenever I go to her I always like to go out because I love my hair LOL No isolating for me :P Their space is also very clean and aesthetic. I wanted something cheap and simple... not much to ask. I searched all through yelp and also did my research on places. I found a lot of old reviews of this place. Located in Chinatown cultural plaza right next to the stage. I always thought this place would be too expensive because of its modern look. Little did I know that this is probably the cheapest place for a haircut nowadays. Parking is available at cultural plaza or meter street parking. I don't the cost of the parking but they do validate. I called a day before and schedule an appointment. I didn't have any specific person to request since I never been there before. So I just said whoever is available so I can get my hair cut. I was schedule around lunchtime on a Saturday. They were quite busy as I still waited for 15 minutes after my appointment time. There were about 3-4 workers who works there that greeted me when I walked in. I showed them the hair style I want on my phone and he gave me some suggestions. For $35, you get a deep hair wash, and haircut. That's a pretty awesome deal. Throughout the experience, great customer service and communication. Rattiya is very nice, has a cute accent, and very experience, she knows what she is doing She has been at her shop for 4 years now and has over 20+ years experience. I usually plan ahead and call Rattiya for my appointment but during this past weekend, I really needed and an emergency haircut and happen to be in the area, She was very busy and luckily could squeeze me in but with a wait of course. I observed 2 more customers walking in but she couldn't take them, she had a color in process along with with men's haircut. Her prices varies. For ex. when I had my color retouch and haircut last month my total was $125. She did mention her prices were going up. For men's haircut it is $20. I haven't had my hair cut in 2 years, the reason being I had to let it all grow back from a cut that I got in 2023 that took off the majority of the length. Short hair does not look good on me. I've struggled to find a hair salon/hair stylist/artist that understands the concepts of "keep as much length as possible while making it look good"; and it's usually WHACK - a foot and a half OFF. I've been binge-watching Youtube magnificent makeovers for hair, where stylists take years off from someone's look just by a nice hair cut. I've decided in my relatively old age to start taking care of myself. Why should I look like my real age? NEVER!! Yelp lead me to .... Yosuke Kobayashi who shampoo'd my hair, massaged my scalp, cut my hair, blow dried and styled my hair, conditioned it AND educated me on how to take care of my hair. I had no idea all these years why my hair started looking crappier and crappier and really bad because I was doing things all wrong, like going to bed with wet hair out of the shower! My hair was also luxuriously light-feeling, all the damaged ends cut off, length preserved to a very acceptable length and looked amazing with the curtain bangs and layering! I didn't want to gloat in the shop mirror about how great I looked because that's not very humble (or sane), but came home and started gloating, posing and throwing my hair around! My son said I looked 20 years younger - yeah, he's stretching it, either that, or wants to ask me for something later...but he was genuine when he said my hair looked great, and THAT I believe! PROS: central location in town, 909 Kapiolani Blvd across the street from the Neil Blaisdell Center, free parking in the stalls marked "customer parking" on the first floor. Talk about ON TIME, Yosuke was en-point with the appointment time, something that I appreciated a lot. I don't appreciate businesses that make you wait and wait. The price is very generous and one of the most best deals on the island for everything that is included ($80.00 without tax/tip).
