My hair-stylist moved over here and once you find someone who can cut your hair the way you want them to, you kind of stick with them which is the case for me. Think of the episode of Seinfeld titled "The Barber". In this episode, Jerry gets a bad haircut after trying to avoid his regular barber, Enzo, by getting a cut on Enzo's day off and seeing his brother to cut his hair. Well that's what kind of happened to me. I had a bad haircut from my "regular" hair-stylist, so I went to someone else who's name is Janet. I've been with her ever since. I really like this place she ended up because there is lots of parking and they validate for 3 hours so after I cut my hair, I can hangout and get a bite to eat which is pretty cool in downtown Honolulu. This review is of my experience with Mitzi. I am extremely upset. Though I was given an acceptable haircut. Mitzi, obviously in a rush, failed to properly measure my hair for a hair donation. The whole reason I decided to cut my hair short was to donate my hair (for the 3rd time)to Wigs for Kids. However, instead of the minimum 12 inches, she cut 10 1/2 when she was more than capable of slowing down, measuring, and cutting off the appropriate amount. Over 3 years of growth absolutely wasted because she couldn't take her time. Wigs for Kids and a child with hair loss will have one less wig because Mitzi did not care. When I called to let her know, she was extremely dismissive and offered an insincere apology. I will not be back. I do not recommend Mitzi or a salon that does not care about providing the bare minimum. read more

This salon is located in restaurant row. I really never would have gone here if I didn't meet one of the stylists. Due to the times we're in, went here because my normal salon and stylist weren't operating at the time and I needed to get my hair done. Wouldn't have known about this place otherwise. The salon interior seemed a little dated and well loved. There's a lot of stations but I don't think they're all occupied. I go to see Rose. She's the only one who has colored my hair to get it to the right color. And I only went here on accident! That was a long time ago when I was coloring my own hair and I had colored it to platinum blond! I tried to die it back to black and it turned reddish. So I bought another home kit and is didn't work either. I cried to my friends and someone suggested Hairscapes. So I called and just made an appointment with anyone. Good thing it was with Rose! She fixed my hair color so I looked more professional than trashy bar girl. I would give 5 stars, but sometimes I get someone else to wash my hair and their scalp massage isn't as good as Rose's. But hey, the woman is busy and she can't always wash my hair. That was the case yesterday. I do like my hair color and I wish I knew how to dry my hair like Rose does. *edit* I've definitely changed my mind about this place after letting my hair grow out a bit and getting a few less-than-satisfying hairdos. I'd still recommend it for short/pixie-type cuts, but for people with longer hair, I'd suggest going elsewhere. I just got my hair done here today and I put up some pictures. The salon is located in Manoa Marketplace, by the Manoa post office. I see the stylist Mitzie here, and highly recommend her to anyone, however she is particularly good with short hair on women. I have been having Mitzie do my hair for the past few years, and I will not have my hair done anywhere else. My typical visit includes a cut and color or color touch up. The last time I went I had her color my hair a deep red, and the color lasted nearly three months. When it did start to fade, it didn't turn brassy or orange as some low quality dyes do. This salon also uses Pureology products, which are great, and they offer Pureology for much cheaper than other places like Trade Secret. Mitzie keeps the color formula and cut she did last on a card so that I can get the exact same cut and color over and over again if I so choose. Prices here are very reasonable. Today I had my hair cut and my color touch up for $73. A haircut with blowdry/style is about $35, and just a cut without any styling is cheaper although im not sure what the price is exactly. The quality of haircut and style you get from Mitzie is the same as any high-end salon where you would pay much, much more. She is also very friendly and will listen to your request before lopping off your hair. The salon is pretty tiny and doesn't look anything like Aveda, but what matters most is the hairstylist, so I don't really care. I come here to have my hair done exactly as I want it, no scrimping, no regrets later, and I am always satisfied. read more

Yesterday I went to get my badly needed haircut from Hairscapes. I hadn't had my hair cut for about a year. I blame it all on being pregnant and having a baby. After you have a baby, you have absolutely no time for yourself, haha. Well this week, my in laws are in town, so I finally got to get a hair cut. Woo hoo! My go to hair stylist is Adrienne. And I'm not the typical girl who gets all made up and gets nails and hair intact. Nope not me, I just pretty much get my hair cut when it's too hot and too long, or if there's a special event happening. I think the last time that I saw Adrienne was a couple days before I got married. Adrienne is always a delight to talk to when she's cutting my hair. She always keeps me entertained with her stories and she does a really good job with my hair. I don't ask much to style my hair, pretty much just thin it out and then cut the split ends off. read more

DEAR GENTLEMEN, If you're here reading this review, you must understand how frustrating it can be to find a good stylist on yelp (uhhhhh I'm not a statistician here, but like 90% of the hair salon reviews are from a woman's perspective!). If you're anything like me, then you must want to be sure that the place you're going to can do a job well done on MEN'S hair. Because God knows we don't have silky flowing locks of sexy hair like women do! In any case, if you're such a person your search for a great men's hair stylist, can now come to a yield. Myra here did a great job of sculpting my hair to the style I showed her on my phone. I even requested that she refrain from a buzzer, she was more than willing to oblige and her years of experience showed in here ability to razor cut my hair (no pain!) and to texturize it to perfection (even at a short length!). The style stayed with me for a good 1.5 months (it even grew into a nicer long hair style by the end of the 2 months). Well worth the sub-$35 price tag! So why am I hesitant to give this place 5 stars? I'll need to go for a Round 2 to come to a final verdict. I've been to stylists who aren't consistent and that can be disappointing. No one likes a great cut the first time and a cut on the ear the second (this actually happened to me before!). Be on the look out for an update! i went in for a haircut and hair coloring. the haircut was great but the color was darker than the picture i showed the hair stylist. i called the salon 3 days later asking for a redo and explained how i thought maybe the color would've fade with a shower but it didn't. the lady on the phone seemed uninterested and kinda rude and told me she'd tell the hairstylist who worked on my hair and to expect a call later that day. it's been like 3 days and i sent a message on the website explaining my situation and no response whatsoever. i don't blame the hairdresser for the negative review so much as the service. read more

I was scheduled to do my hair with Mitzi here at Hairscapes. Since my work schedule is very unpredictable, every time I finished work early, I would call to see if I can come in early. After awhile they already knew my situation and would call with available times. Also, on the day of my appointment, Mitzi called me herself letting me know she was available earlier than scheduled. Thumbs up to the customer service. I like this hair salon because they use environment friendly products and their dyes aren't harmful to the hair. The hair products are also free of harmful chemicals. I believe they work closely with the Beauty Supply Store B.O.S.S. off of Nimitz. As soon as I came in to do my hair, Mitzi informed me that I will receive a 10% discount since I work at the Restaurant Row. It was a nice surprise, so I decided to add a cut to the hair color I was already receiving. I asked her what time they were closing and she said "whenever", which is cool because they will accommodate to your needs. Mitzi did my color and trimmed my hair to my satisfaction. I also got a strawberry pie while my color was processing. Everything was very fast. I love how easy going and worry free Mitzi is. The only thing that I know won't happen when I'm there is getting a nice blow out. She never really dries my hair till it's truly dry. Always a bit damp. read more

I came here seeking a hairstylist who would be nice and do a good job. I've been coming for about a year now and I will continue to come here! My hairstylist is Wendee and she is great. She's very nice and very careful about your hair. I usually bring a picture of what I want to do and then she gets to work. She checks with you before she does any major cuts to make sure you're okay with the length you will have. I've had stylists in the past who would pass harsh judgement about hair. Wendee has never done that and I appreciate it. This salon also offers a pretty good deal for your haircut. I haven't been there since they've moved to their new location in Restaurant Row....hopefully it will still be the same! I'll try to write an update when I do get out there. read more

I went to see Mitzie at the salon ready to lop off at least 5 inches of my curly hair. I had been wanting to go shorter and I was actually just waiting to find a good salon to go to. Based on the recommendation, I went here. Before this gets negative, I will say that Mitzie is a lot of fun and she's really nice. She fit me in and did highlights when all I had was an appointment for a cut. The cut and highlights only cost $96. What I think maybe was the problem is that while Mitzie is good at cutting shorter hair, she can go shorter than maybe you might want. I actually think she's probably better with straighter hair. I have curly hair and it's curly down to my root, so when I get a cut I usually have to go longer because it shrinks quite a bit. I brought in a picture and Mitzie actually went shorter than that cut and now I'm disappointed with it. It's probably going to be at least a month before I can have it fixed to where I wanted it. read more

The salon is located in restaurant row, perfect location for those who are working downtown and it also has plenty of parking. I am somewhat of a hair nazi, I don't like just anyone touching it. But I felt confident after reading the comment I read from my fellow yelpers (plus you can't really go wrong with 50% off, you can always get it fixed). I called the salon to make my appointment and asked if anyone specialized in mens hair, but they failed to recommend someone for me, so I just mentioned some named I had read on yelp and was quickly set up with Mitzie. Very friendly and meticulous. She kept on telling me that she takes extreme pride in her work, if the finished product doesn't look good, looks bad for the stylist. Having long layered curly hair has made me become a skeptic of letting someone I don't know cut my hair. I have a friend who goes to see Sandy regularly and swears by her. I went to get my haircut by Sherry. She is so sweet and funny! Hairscapes is located in Restaurant Row across from the jury parking for the district court. They offer four hour validation with their services! They have late hours and weekend hours making it easy to get an appointment around your schedule. Your first appointment you will also receive 10% off! Sherry did a great job on my hair. I have a lot of hair but it is thin and can be harder to cut...top it off its wavy. She understood how I wanted to style it and made it easy for me to straighten or wear wavy/ curly. This is key, I like to be done with my hair in less than 15 minutes. After my cut and blow dry she validated my parking and I was off. They do not pressure you to purchase product, which I think is another benefit to this place. Most of the lady's I work with go here and I will be headed back. read more

I had a great hair cut by Ronnie. She even gave me a discount. I got a nice hair cut + shampoo + blowdry/styling for under $40. For you students, just ask them for a student discount. Based on the excellent reviews received by this place and looking for someplace that would not make me look like a villain from the Harry Potter films (see review of J Salon, below), I called and made an appointment with Mitzie. Everything people have said is true. She is very nice and she did a very good job cutting my hair. While washing my hair she also gave me a fantastic scalp massage. The only thing I didn't like was the smell of the coloring product she used in my hair. I wasn't necessarily stink, but it was kind of strong and smelled like hair coloring agent (or whatever that is). And guess what? She flat ironed my hair, too (without asking). At least this time, I did not look as Snape-like, since she did not put product in my hair. Also, I am not sure if it because flat ironing cost a lot, the end price was a bit higher than what I was expecting. So, I have two questions: 1. Do stylists have a thing about straight hair? My hair has a tiny bit of wave in it. Why does everyone want to iron it away? 2. Am I the only one who didn't like the smell of the hair coloring? My stylist's name was *(Mitzi)... she was really prepared and had an enthusiatic attitude which helped me feel at ease with my "fear" of not knowing what to expect! The whole process went smoothly. Her approach to my hair treatment helped me realize she had so much experience and was in the right line of work. I got a cut/style/wash with Full-Highlights... EXCELLENT Job!!! Unbelievable the magic she had performed... LOL! I was impressed with the color combination she had selected. My normal is to do red- highlights, but in the past, had a bad experience once the color faded and it turned into this "tiger-orangy" color which was...nasty! I figure, new salon... new outlook...and I entrusted the stylist to do her thang... Resulting into a SATISFIED Customer!!! WITH ALL THIS BEING SAID... The process took 2.5 hours and the cost was reasonable... For first time visitors they had a promotional deal offering 20% off any hair services. I went here a couple of weeks ago to get my hair trimmed/colored/higlighted. I found the salon clean and very cozy. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. My hair stylist was Ronnie and she was easy to talk to and super nice. She helped me choose a color and type of highlights I wanted. I really liked how she double and triple checked how much hair I wanted to trim off. Since I was a 1st time customer I got 50% off my bill, which was helpfull since I got colored and highlighted. The negative thing I have to say is that I didn't like how my color/highlight turned out. The top half (my natural hair color) absorbed the color way more than the bottom half, leaving the top part of my head lighter than the bottom (which was colored black about a year ago). The service was good but I wouldn't go back for a color job again. read more
