I've lived in magna for going on 8 years now and have passed by Colosimo's many times. Each time I've briefly seen inside and thought it looked empty so I was never really interested in going ins However I'm having some people over today and wanted to get some sausages/hot dogs to make for dinner and for some reason colosimos came to mind. When I walked in, my initial impression wasn't really much different than what I originally thought, that it's kinda a half empty looking store. I found my way back to the freezers where the meat was and initially didn't think there were many options. But the guy working there (maybe the owner?) came by to give me the "grand tour". He showed me that the sausages are actually in these white boxes (pictured). I picked the garlic and mild Italian options. Which come out to about $15 for 6 sausages. Initially that felt expensive, but when you actually look at them, they are pretty big, so it's really not tooo much more than if you got something from Walmart. I told him it was my first time, and as I said that he went into the back, and came out with a package of breakfast sausages on the house. He then also gave my kid a quarter so he could get a toy from the machine up front. At the last minute, I noticed the buns they had and put it on the counter. He proceeded to give me the buns for half off for basically no reason. Never in my 31 years of life have I had an experience like this at any store. I felt the pride he had in their product and was totally taken off guard at his kindness. I have yet to actually try the food, but if they are even 1/4th as good as my experience in store, I'm sure they will be incredible. Can't wait to go back. read more

I have a special place in my heart for Colosimo's. My Italian neighbor, who is like a grandpa to me, taught me how to make homemade stuffed mushrooms, spaghetti sauce, meatballs, and frittata all from the meat and cheeses that come from Colosimo's. Funny enough my neighbor actually knows the business owner and it's always fun seeing them catch up. I review places with my OAT method: O= Overall experience - This run down, 100+ year old market is very nostalgic to me. Yes, it could be re-modeled and cleaned up. But the beauty about it is the wear and tear this place has. Located in Magna, there isn't much out there but this spot is a must for holiday meals or dinners. Plus, the owners always give great recommendations for new products to try and they will give me a sample to make sure I like it too! A= Appearance - The meat and cheeses are like non-other in Salt Lake City. T= Taste - My favorite go-tos, when available, are the maple breakfast links, hot Italian bulk/ skinless, Kasseri cheese, and pepperoni. I love juiciness of the meat and creaminess of the cheeses. The best brats and sausages in SLC. The pepperoni is amazing! I won't buy any other pepperoni when they have it in stock. Have to get some pepperoni because they make it fresh and it's in high demand. So don't be surprised if they are out. It goes quickly! Their hotdogs are also the best I've had. They have high quality Italian meats. Uncased hot Italian sausage is great for foods like spaghetti and lasagna and pizza. The store ambience does look like they're going out of business, because they don't have a very large inventory. The staff are friendly and helpful. I only wish they had more days open, but it's understandable because they have to also have time to make their yummy foods! read more

Colosimos is an intriguing shop. It is really a deli, only they don't make sandwiches, so can we truly call it one? The interior affords no further clues as to what it should be, overall giving off the appearance of a 1970s gas station left to neglect. Shelving (much of it bare) displays a mishmosh of products: pizzelle cookies, spices and condiments, candy, chips, soft drinks, etc. The various freezers and coolers fare slightly better, containing the expected sausages, hot dogs, and other meats, along with surprises like fresh pasta (both filled or no), sauces, and local Beehive cheese. Taking all this in, I was, admittedly, a bit unimpressed, but as I looked over a price list (mostly sliced deli meats and cheeses) on the back wall, assuring they had additional wares, a nice man appeared and asked if I needed any assistance. I asked about their daily specials (on a white board at the front), and a few other items I was interested in, then shared it was my first visit, inquiring if there was anything I must try. Friends, always do this on your maiden voyage to a new business! 95% of the time, I try something I otherwise might not have, and I often love it. Owners and employees are going to know what they make best, as well as what their customers most treasure. He disappeared to put together my order, I grabbed a few additional items, and we met at checkout, where he threw in some breakfast sausage for free! Awww! I found prices to be very reasonable: Around $6-$7/lb for sausage, $8-$11/lb for deli meats, and $8-$15/lb for cheese. The sausage is all made in house, as well as the capicola, sopressatta, and pepperoni. Yes, guys! Back home, I grilled up my black pepper bleu cheese sausage, and it is excellent: juicy, with just the right amount of spice, neither overwhelming nor too hot. My husband is a bleu cheese hater (hmph!) and he liked it just fine, though I'd have loved stronger notes of that best-of-all cheeses. The garlic brats are basic in a good way, and would be ideal for a number of applications. Their pepperoni is quite spicy when enjoyed on its own, but perfect on pizza and sandwiches. The meatball sausage (I know, what?!) was a surprise hit, with all the flavor of meatballs, cut in knobs, and perfect for popping direct from the freezer into a frying pan. Same goes for the breakfast sausage. In fact, everything is so convenient to be frozen and used right when needed, the cased sausages requiring just a bit of time to defrost, and the others needing none at all! Their sausage is sold at a number of local grocers, including Harmons, Smith's and Macey's. Though Magna is not a city I venture to all that often, the trip is worthwhile solely to visit Colosimo's and stock up on specialties unavailable elsewhere. I am so impressed with, not only the delicious products, but also friendly and helpful customer service, and great prices. Not to mention, the satisfaction afforded by supporting an 80+ year local business. Lastly, I was here for less than a quarter hour, in the middle of a weekday, but shoppers arrived every couple minutes, showing Colosimo's dedicated customer base, which speaks even more to their excellence. read more

First time coming here and I love the accommodation with the owner! We told him it was our first time coming here and he gave two sausages on the house. Not only we bought other sausages, but we also bought their bread and their bread is so tasty and flavorful. The place looks so empty, despite it being big. There's nothing much to buy here like a general grocery store, but you get the good, fresh deli you can find. It's an absolute gem here I recommend coming in here for the awesome deli and kind owner. read more

I was just wondering where I can buy your German style bratwurst. I used to be able to get it at Sam's but they stopped selling it. I didn't know if you went out of business, but my son, who has autism, if very picky about what he eats. Your sausages are the only ones he will eat. Thats just the back of the store, the front half is just a cool old mom and pop market thats been around for generations. The owners son knows his stuff and is very nice. This is a small butcher shop/neighborhood grocery the the name STANDARD should stand for everywhere. DON'T ASK FOR NUTRITIONAL FACTS YOU WILL BE TREATED LIKE CRAP!!!Thousands of dollars easily spent buying the ground sausage from Colosimo's for a long time specifically at Reams and when I called to get the nutritional facts the guy on the other end was such a jerk and told me if I felt bad about eating the sausage that I should stop buying it. NOT THE REASON I was calling, I was just calling to get Nutritional facts, I never said I felt bad about eating it or that I was going to stop eating it at all. I was a loyal customer and I love the ground sausage from them it has been a favorite in my home for a long time. but the experience I received for one question that I thought was to be provided to paying customers really made me want to stop buying it and let others know of my bad experience? I thought legally they are required to provide that but I don't know for sure?
