First, I am giving one star to give credit where credit is due. The Good: I got stationed at FT Meade, and the movers made a large scratch on our floor that spread across multiple wood planks. The transportation office said they would reimburse us or replace the entire floor since the scratch was so large. We opted to replace the whole floor. However, the transportation office should have informed us that they had already contacted Columbia Flooring to replace our floor and ordered hardwood that did not match our original floor. Thankfully, Ed brought us samples of the floor he had available and let us choose the floor we wanted within the amount the transportation office paid him. He even let us go to his office to pick a new floor. We stated we wanted a durable floor given that we had had two (now three) kids and a dog. We also said we were willing to pay extra to ensure we got a quality floor, and we picked one that Ed assured us would be durable. The Bad Ed stated that tearing up the old floor and installing the new one would take two days. When the sub-contractor (I'm assuming) arrived, he immediately looked confused. First, he was concerned that two days would not be enough to install the flooring, given that he was unaware they needed to move our furniture for us (which is what Ed told us they would do), and they had to tear up the old hardwood. Second, he stated that the new hardwood we picked was shorter than our original floor, which would leave a gap between the floor and the base of the doors, toilet, sink, etc. This was alarming, so we immediately called Ed, expecting him to tell us he made a mistake. Ed immediately got angry at us and said we picked the floor out and should have known better. He then started yelling at me, saying he already helped us by letting us pick a floor, and choosing another one that would fit adequately could delay us another six months. I was irritated and confused because I expected a flooring company to tell us if a floor would cause issues, but apparently, that was asking too much of Ed. The sub-contractor assured us he could seal the gap, so we decided to move forward with the installation as this had been a 9-month ordeal for us, and we wanted it to be over. The sub-contractor informed us that this was a recurring issue with Ed. Ed would get mad with him anytime he told the customer about the poor quality/fit of a floor, which was even more alarming since this was relevant information we could have used from the start. After the floor installation, the sub-contractor informed us that we should not use water to clean the floor. I asked how we were supposed to mop it, and he said the floor was too "delicate" to use water. This goes against what Ed told us when we asked him for a durable floor. The following day is when everything started to go downhill. While the floor was not scratching, it started chipping, meaning chunks of the floor would break off. The chipping was worst between the planks, specifically in the areas where t installation was rushed due to Ed not giving his sub-contractor enough time. The subcontractor returned, but his fix was to "cover up" the chipping with stain. Over the next few months, the floor continued to get worse. It was chipping both on and in between the hardwood planks. We informed Ed, who stated it might be an issue with the hardwood rather than the installation. He contacted the company that makes the floor (Shaw Floors), and they sent an investigator out to take a look. They concluded that it was an issue with the installation. Separately, Ed had his investigators come out, and they determined it was an issue with the hardwood. Needless to say, they blamed each other, and there was no resolution for us. Ed offered to replace 20 planks, which would only cover about 10% of the floor, and almost every plank was either chipped or cracked. Replacing 20 planks was not worth removing my family from our house for a day, and I was scheduled for four months of military training, so I couldn't be present to watch the installation. So now we are stuck replacing this floor ourselves, and it only worsens by the day. read more

We recently bought a house in MD and were coordinating a move from TX. We wanted to replace carpet in the bedroom level and basement with LVP during the window between closing on the house and the moving van arriving with our stuff six days later. I got quotes from a couple places and worked with Eddie Beckett at Columbia Floors, ultimately selecting them for the job. Eddie was very responsive, I got a ballpark quote from the floor plan, then when he went into the house to measure with my realtor, the quote actually came down slightly. Terms were 50% up front to order the plank, remainder due day of job. I saw pics of the various options samples from his showroom and then went to the manufacturers website to get a better idea of what they looked like in a room. Hubby and I gave several ranked choices and Eddie said our first choice was in stock so there shouldn't be any trouble getting it in the two weeks that remained from the time I got clearance to close from my lender and the first date they could start the job, which due to weekend left a 3 day window for a one to one and a half day job. A little tight but with some wiggle room. The day of the job arrived (Monday) and they collected the final payment, then the team arrived early - but told me all they were doing was removing carpet that day because the plank hadn't arrived yet, was due at 5pm. I was confused since I was told it was in stock, but went with the flow. It took less than 30 minutes for them to remove the carpet, the guy said they would come between 10 and noon next day, and they left. Tuesday arrives, I hear nothing back. I had called Eddie to find out what was going on; they hadn't kept him in the loop either as he was the sales guy not the logistics guy, but he called back and said the truck was late due to the shipping delays from COVID. I reiterated confusion since he had said it was in stock but turns out he meant in stock with the manufacture in GA, not in stock locally. Eddie then tells me the plank is even further delayed and due in at 4pm Tuesday. At this point I am panicking about it getting here in time. Eddie is promising they can do the job in one day and team won't leave until it is done, but until the plank actually is received I don't have much confidence. I explain to Eddie that I am not upset about the shipping delay,, because I know that is outside their control, but what I was steaming mad about was that they ripped out the carpet before they had the new floors in hand. This left me hugely exposed. If the plank hadn't arrived, I wouldn't be able to move all my stuff in and my animals in onto the subfloors! Whereas if they had waited to remove the floors, the plank being late would simply mean they would have to delay doing the job at all until after I moved in, and then move stuff out of the way which I am sure they do frequently anyway. Given that it only took 30 minutes to remove the carpet, there was absolutely no reason to do this in advance and put me at risk that way, it costs thousands of dollars to delay delivery on a cross country moving truck! This issue, and the poor logistics team communication, is why they don't get 5 stars. It was a very bad decision on their part. Eddie himself totally understood where I was coming from and was also very unhappy how this went down. It would have been nice to get a call from the big boss with an apology, but oh well. Anyway, as you might guess from my 4 star rating, it all worked out in the end. The plank arrived, the team started the job midday Weds and it took them about 8 hours to complete, but we love the floors. The install was great and the look is beautiful (see attached pics). As it turns out the carpet on the stairs that we thought we would leave in place is pretty bad, so I plan on having Columbia floors replace it after my old house sale closes, but I won't let them rip out the carpet til they have the new stuff in hand. All in all, I do recommend them both on price and quality and EddieB's service, but absolutely do not let them start the job until they have the new material on hand! read more

Jon, again patiently helped select tiles and repeatedly discussed every detail of the project. He is always proactive, willing to go extra miles to help customers. Mike, who installed the tiles, worked extremely hard with high level of professionalism. You can easily tell he is an honest professional who never cuts corners. Update: eventually we got the missing trim piece and turned out well. Just took a long time. We had a cracked hearth and they were able to remove it with no issue. But found out later (from chimney service) that we can't use the fireplace without a hearth in front. So in retrospect we should've added the hearth back in. All of our carpeting was replaced with the luxury hardwood vinyl. Eddie was great to work with. We had to get HOA approval to change the flooring. This took some time and they filled out the necessary paperwork and supplied samples of what would be used. On the day of install, we had a crew of 7. The flooring was completed in 1 day and measurements for the runner on the steps were taken and was done 1 week later. I recommend Columbia Flooring for all your flooring needs. read more

I would not recommend this business. The workmanship on my tile was shoddy (several uneven tiles) and they did a number on the walls when removing my vanities. They also left my house a complete mess and one of my toilets leaks. I reached in to Ed about this and he offered me a $100 credit which was nice, but he was sure to tell me that he under-quoted the work in the first place but that he would "live with it". Well, considering he spent five minutes on the initial assessment, that's not surprising to me. Barely looked at the bathrooms and did no measuring or anything. I have attached photos of some of the work as well as the damages. I will have to fix some myself and hire someone else to even out the grout and remove the grout haze. Disappointed in the work and will not be hiring again when it comes time to replace my carpets. read more

People matter and professional technical competence matters. That's my basic message about using Columbia/Bulldog floors. Ed knows floors and flooring. He listened to our needs and preferences, and quickly provided some suitable options, at a fair price. Equally important was his installer, Mike, who quickly assessed some leveling issues on the 75-year old linoleum floor, and devised some cost-effective remedies that worked. Trying get a solid price and installation schedule from other flooring companies on Rockville Pike and some other fancy-schmancy showrooms proved elusive. They arrived the day they said they would arrive, and finished in two days when they said they would finish. We are so glad we found Ed and Columbia flooring. Do not be concerned that Ed seems like he could talk a cat off a fish wagon; it is not mere sales BS patter. He just knows what he is talking about and was good for his word. Literally no one who has visited us, or seen pictures of of our house, hasn't commented, "the floors are gorgeous." I just happened to find these guys as I google searched while I was in another carpet place nearby when the guy was waiting on the phone with one manufacturer to get an estimate for 1 flooring option. Definitely a stroke of luck, Guys at CF made it so much easier, explained all the options, gave me honest information. Two stars -- one because it began well, and the other is entirely for their hard-working installer. Everything else should have been an embarrassment for the company. 1) They told me installation was about two weeks from the time I paid my deposit, then never called me to schedule when two weeks had already passed. I had to call THEM. (At which point they scheduled me two more weeks down the line.) 2) They told me it would take two days to do my floor, then they scheduled their installer for five days... without saying a word to me. I didn't find out until the end of day two. 3) They ordered 3 boxes SHORT of the measurements of my room... and they were the ones who'd taken the measurements! So the installer had to come back again SEVERAL WEEKS LATER to finish the job. 4) The installer said he'd need two days to finish that last part, so just to drive this whole "we have no communication skills" point home, the office manager never contacted me to schedule it until AFTER I wrote an epic long email complaining about all of the above -- and then she tried to schedule me for only one day. I had to prompt HER that the installer told me two days. Which she already knew. She only bothered mentioning that first day. Because communication skills. 5) They charged the same credit card that I'd used to pay the deposit, when I had to pay the balance (before work even began, per their policy), without asking me. They just kept it on file without my permission. I'd intended to split it between two cards, but they just charged my card again without a word. And, 6) the owner Ed, who came to measure, told me he would provide a threshhold/transition strip of some kind in the doorway. He never did. I asked about it three times. THREE TIMES. Totally silent. So the installer sculpted a hill of grout to try to make up the difference in the level of the floors in the doorway between two rooms. Ed never responded to a single thing I brought to his attention (which was all of the above). The office manager did respond, but ONLY to discuss scheduling the rest of the install, and didn't mention anything else -- no apology for ordering three boxes short, no explanation, no CONCEPT that they'd misled me several times about timing and scheduling and an utter lack of communication and disregard for my payment structure. These guys can take a long walk off a short pier. Never hire them. They're great and friendly when you walk in the door, but after that, they give absolutely not one single crap. It would be one thing to have had all these problems... and it is QUITE ANOTHER THING to have every single attempt I made at communicating them ignored. Once they had my money (oh, it's PRE-PAY ONLY ), they gave not one single warm crap. Not one. read more

We are very happy with our new floors. We were looking to replace a mix of carpet and engineered hardwood on two levels due to the addition of a new puppy to the family and to make our home a little brighter throughout. We were primarily exploring laminate/vinyl/tile options to make cleanup and overall upkeep simpler. The process was virtually hassle-free from start to finish, and Ed was very helpful and responsive throughout. He brought by samples at our initial consult and once we had decided on a scratch/waterproof vinyl, he brought additional samples to us. Ed, you did not reach out to Mannington at all to try to assist us. I spent hours on the phone and emailing Mannington directly myself because we could not get any assistance from you at all. Ed and his team were great, from start to finish. We have an old row house that needed new hardwoods on the main floor and new steps. The old floor was creaky and stained in places and felt unsafe. We received a few different quotes and Ed's landed on the lower side but he was familiar with our type of house (he knew immediately when he walked in that we didn't have a real subfloor and would need one) and was very responsive. He said it would take 4-5 days and that's exactly where his team landed it, even with a couple of unforeseen issues in the middle. His team was very good and considerate as well. Unreliable. This place was recommended by Yelp and I was contacted to do the job. I called and was greeted with great customer service (hence the 2 stars). From there it went down hill. The person on the phone said they were eager to help and could accommodate getting the work done before I sold my house. I booked an appointment. Three days later, on the day of the appointment, I sent a text asking what time the estimator will arrive. I was told I'd get a call back. No call. Then I called later in the evening and was told they were booked out for weeks and they would not be able to complete the job. Completely unprofessional to initiate business then cancel. Especially knowing you're booked weeks out. You'd be taking a gamble booking with this company. read more
