It was a generally good experience working with Factotum (this company is a special partner with Floor and Decor where you shop for tiles): excellent communication before project began (so-so communication after project started); professional, knowledgeable about all things tiles; wore uniform and masks all the time; on time arrival for work each morning; courteous (telling us they were off to lunch break, etc.); detail oriented (always asking us about details before installing something, such as the orientation of the patterns on the tiles, which types of tiles to install where, etc). The best part: The representative met up with us in Floor and Decor and shopped for tiles with us (like concierge service!); his knowledge about types of tiles was super helpful. Clarity and excellent communication before project began. The worst part: communication (responsiveness / accuracy) really deteriorated after the project started. We had to call, text message and chase down one of them (our project manager was almost missing in action) for questions big or small. The demolition was primarily just one day (first day). They took out the toilet and the shower lever and shower head. They had to take out the bathtub as well at a later stage. They stripped all the tiles. The crew piled up all the tiles and raw material neatly on the floor of our apartment near the entrance, taking up only reasonable space (we still work from home and live here 24/7, so we appreciate their keeping the job site and the pile of material neat). They kept work area and generally our condo clean during both demolition and installation phases were; tidy and neat; they clean up before leaving the job site every day. They protected our floor. The representative (or project manager) who did the measurements, gave us the quote, and was our point of contact was good, though he overpromised and under-delivered on some items: he said they could complete the renovation of our master bathroom within 7 working days (reality: 2 weeks!); he said the crew would work on Saturdays (nope: Mondays to Fridays only); he said the crew would bring the wax ring to re-install our toilet (hope, we had to run to Home Depot to buy it on the day of; wish there's some advance notice); and he said his crew can install frameless glass shower door (as advertised in Floor and Decor; but they did refund us the $450, labor, for glass installation), but nope: they refused to do it because of lack of experience (we had to get a quote and sign a contract with a separate company in the end, wasting precious time). Unpleasant surprise: We had "splasher" tiles at the bottom of the walls (floor was tile, and some tile 'grew' upwards around the bottom of the walls). We did not have base boards. They tore all this out of course before installing new tiles. However, we were told very late in the project that we now needed 7" baseboards to fully cover up the unsightly tears on the wall. This is very hard to find. Impossible! We went to Home Depot, and wasted so much time there. They only sold 5" baseboards (The standard). We bought the widest we could find. Wrong! The crew said it's still not enough. In the end, the crew went and bought the correct base boards (actually two combined to reach the correct height). All's well that ended well, but we wish the project manager communicated all this earlier and more accurately. We often scrambled at the last minute. Every day brought new crises. It didn't have to be this way. This being a condo, initially the crew were planning on cutting the tiles (a messy, dusty, noisy process) outside. We don't have a balcony sadly. So the only place possible would be the garage downstairs. That would have dragged on our project even longer. In the end they found a way to fit their tools in our bathroom and did all the cutting in there (very noisy; so much dust throughout the apartment beyond the bathroom, but worth the shorter project timeline). read more

The initial response time and set up were prompt. The correspondence from set up though customer service rep Jasmine was exceptional. The person who did measurements was very precise. However, the installation was worse than horrible. The two technicians took a very long time for installation, stated the sink would be installed by another technician and left it unassembled. I had to call a plumber to take a look at the damages and repair since we went without a functional sink for 2 days. There were stains on the stainless steel sink from the chemicals used to coat the counters that are not removable. One of my kitchen cabinet drawer was found broken and did not roll open and close as it was prior, they forced the drawer back in and damaged the rollers. When I reached out to the company to report these issues, they were going to send the same technicians who caused the damages for repair! I declined and sought professionals to fix these damages, amounting to $1,089- this is in addition to the countertop bill. The damages from install were permanent and the reason for my one star rating. This was a property I am selling. For my next home, I would pay more for better installation service from the get-go so I do not have to endure the headache of fixing damages from the countertop installation. read more

I really loved the guys who installed our flooring and backsplash. They demoed the floor for us and put in new tile flooring as well as tile backsplash. There was some confusion and hassle regarding materials, but I think that was more Floor and Decor's fault rather than Factotum. The guys were extremely professional, efficient, and did a really beautiful job. I'm really really nit picky, so I noticed a feeeew ever so slight imperfections in some of the backsplash work, but the flooring was impeccable. They showed up early each day and worked in a timely manner wearing masks and cleaning up when they left- I was very impressed with them and felt confident in their work. A straight forward bathroom remodel took *months* because the workers did sloppy work that had to be corrected or made errors that had to be redone. Getting my laundry room floor tiled was a great experience from start to finish - getting the quote was easy (and it was reasonable), they arrived when they said they would, and finished the job on time. It was a relatively small job, but they treated it like a big job. They quickly and easily handled moving the shelves, and washer/dryer out to my shed, and getting everything hooked up again at the end. Despite the other, positive reviews for this contractor, I had a very negative experience with them and I'd recommend against hiring them. I hired them to install new wood vinyl throughout most of my condo and they botched the job and then demanded that I pay them anyway "because the mistakes were just aesthetic." Of course, the aesthetic value of the new floor is generally the primary motivation for a meeting floor but that was lost on them. Their mistakes included concentrating the same prominent panel print in one area of the floor, leaving it totally absent elsewhere and doing a predictable stagger of the panels which created a stair step pattern across the floor, the kind of mistake a novice makes. They also did a terrible, incomplete job on the baseboards and had to return to finish the job. You can do better. read more

Factotum has recently done 2 flooring jobs for me and nobody could have done them better for a more reasonable price. The first job was LVP and based on that experience, I had them do hardwood in 3 rooms of the main floor, redo the stairs with hardwood and replace the carpet in the upstairs hall with hardwood. Working with Factotum Remodeling Ventures was unsatisfactory. Several things were not done when promised, required unnecessary follow-up with them to get the job completed, and now require a lot of clean-up and/or follow-up work on our part. First, the estimate appointment had to be rescheduled because no one showed up as scheduled. Then the estimate was not provided when promised, which delayed the installation dates by a week. Second, the crew "finished" the job without installing the baseboard trim as discussed and paid for, which further delayed completion by two days. When the baseboard was installed, not all of the nail holes were filled (only some) and one small piece of baseboard trim was not cut, and the leftover baseboard (that we had purchased and painted) was not left behind. Now we must buy more baseboard trim, paint it, and find someone to cut and install it. Third, the mortar splattered a lot on one wall in particular and was not cleaned up, which will require repainting (note that the room was freshly painted the week before the tile was installed). The most dissatisfying part is there is now an 1" gap between the floor and exterior door. This was not brought to our attention during the estimate stage or during installation; we only discovered it on our own. Now we are left to find solution to fix this, possibly a new exterior door which will cost several thousand dollars. Factotum did a nice job actually installing the ceramic tile, but given all of the headaches throughout the process and work required by us in order to complete the job, I would not recommend them. read more

I was referred to Factotum Remodeling by a representative at Floor and Decor, looking to get backsplash installed in my kitchen. I scheduled an appointment with them for a Friday morning and everything went fine, so far. The representative came to my house on time and was there for not longer then 10 minutes, answered a few questions I had and said I should receive my quote within 24 hours. Well, the 24 hours went by and now we are approaching day 4 with no quote. In this time frame, I've reached out to the representative directly (no response) and called the customer service line twice in which both reps said I should receive a quote shortly. I sent an email to the customer service team today, hoping I'll hear something back. I'm baffled at the lack of professionalism and would exercise caution if you're looking to use this company. If I hear back from them, I'll update my review but otherwise, I do not plan on working with this company now or in the future. 1/15: Shortly after sending the email I received a call from a rep who sent my quote within a few minutes. read more

I made an estimate appointment with Factotum through Floor and Decor in Alexandria. I am having about 3000 square feet of flooring installed and a kitchen remodeled. While the representative, Rafael, was on time and courteous, he was talking me out of using the materials I selected at Floor and Decor. I thought that was extremely suspicious because the store was using this company as an installer. He told me my appointment would be removed from the Floor and Decor system and I would receive an email to show this. Then, he would send me the estimate through another system. The estimate appointment was Thursday, August 29th. Monday, September 2nd, I received a text saying there was a problem with the estimate system and I would receive it the next day. The email taking me out of the Floor and Decor system came to my inbox; however, I NEVER received the estimate. I checked my spam folder and on Tuesday, September 10th, texted Rafael to see if it was sent. I did not receive a reply. Seems like a total scam to me. We were doing a kitchen renovation and hired Factotum Remodeling Ventures to install the glass tile backsplash. Everything about the experience was excellent. Our customer service rep, Lucas M., was especially a pleasure to work with. When the original installer had to cancel on the day of installation due to an emergency, Lucas scheduled another installer to come and do the work the very next day (a Sunday!!), just to make sure we were taken care of! The installation team were through, professional and didn't skimp on the details, PLUS, they did a very nice job taking care of our house by covering the floors and countertops, and cleaning up after the job was finished. We're VERY happy with the work, and the kitchen looks fantastic! With service like we got from Lucas, and the quality work of their installers, we'll definitely go back to Factotum Remodeling Ventures for the next house project! read more
