Melvin's team was great, very punctual and communicative when I had questions ahead of our service. He was upfront about what could be done on my floors and what couldn't be done. We did a small area of refinishing and a buff and recoat all over the rest of the house. I wasn't sure the buff and recoat would be worthwhile on my original and very old floors but they're definitely smoother and feel refreshed in addition to the extra protection I was looking for. Yelp! rocks again! - Yelp! has done well for home service contractors 3 out of 3 previous times, so when I finally got around to doing much-needed flooring, I turned to Yelp!, found three highly-rated flooring companies with consistently legitimate favorable-to-stellar reviews (I disregard reviews from Yelpers with only one or two reviews). As mom and dad always stressed, I always get at least three estimates/bids. The visit and estimates - I contacted all three flooring companies within a two-day period, mid-last-week. All got back within one or two days, but Melvin actually responded and came out same day. All three had good service on the estimate, offering suggestions here and there and so although I gave the edge to Melvin I was waiting on prices. Early the next week I received the three estimates and two were within $200 of each other, the third was $2,200 higher with no difference in materials or anything else on the detailed estimate. All three did a great job of detailing the work to be done and that made it easy to choose... to choose Melvin. The job - Melvin started the work last Friday, with two of his two-man teams working all day. Saturday and Monday one team worked all day. Tuesday and today they finished up. One team includes his brother, Milton, who did some fine craftsmanship work (see pics). Every day, the floor specialists were very special, great attitudes, polite, protected everywhere with plastic, moved my furniture gently, etc. They were perfect, it's not easy to get a skilled craftsman who also cares about the customer and customer service with a great, personable attitude. The job included four rooms and stairs: 1. Replace 26-year old vinyl floor in kitchen with faux-marble luxury vinyl. 2. Refinish oak hardwood in living room, family room, hallway and pine stairs - one coat of stain and two coats of oil-based polyurethane (Melvin explained during the estimate that although oil-based requires drying overnight/longer time, my 72-year-old hardwood floors deserve/need oil-based because water-based in not as gentle on brittle wood). Paint the stair risers white. The results - the clean-up was meticulously done and they refused to accept payment until after I assured them everything was perfect. Best part of it was I could tell they really cared about making me happy. See the pics. The darkish color on the stairs is just a photo/lighting anomaly as is the red color on the floors in the family room. THANK YOU, Melvin, for running such an amazing small flooring business. This review is long overdue. This past June, Melvin, Angel, Edwin, and the rest of the crew helped to replace and restore our family room and kitchen floors after a devastating flood. It was tricky because we have an open floor plan and three large openings connecting the front of the house to the back- where all of the damage occurred. The most difficult part of the job was matching the color of the new floors to the color of the old floors. Frankly, we didn't think any floor company could match the color and almost all the contractors who gave us quotes told us it would be difficult but "maybe rugs over the thresholds would help!!" Angel and crew worked and worked to match the new floors to the old and they accomplished an amazing match. It is virtually impossible to tell the new from the old!! Although the new floors in back have an absolutely lovely finish and subtle golden/reddish hue which we prefer to the old ones. We were on a very tight timeframe as we had a family death in the middle of the job and needed to quickly leave town. Melvin and team worked hard to finish the job on time and leave our house clean and beautiful. Every time we walk on our gorgeous floors we think of how hard Melvin and his crew worked and the absolutely outstanding job they did. The price was very reasonable too! We had water damage in our condo and had to replace the old bamboo composite flooring which was glued to the subflooring. Melvin's proposal was the lowest by $1,000 and his team did excellent work. At first all seemed good. The wife was happy with the flooring, after the second attempt to get the colour to somewhat match. However the after sales service lacks. Two panels broke. Not by abuse, merely by my stepping on them. There was no sub floor installed, so the boards can and do have little to no support underneath them. I'm sure this is not the way the manufacturer advises them to be installed. We called and explained the issue. Melvin came, looked at the problem and said it's not covered by the warranty for.... Reasons. When you pay $6,000 for a floor you do not expect broken boards within months. My wife decided to press the issue, did the manufacturer advise a subfloor to be used? Melvin answered that a sub floor would not work as there is the original floor and the boards he put down. So there would be a rise between the two floors. $450 to fix the issue! Why? Because we were accused of resting furniture on a weak spot on the floor. No furniture was placed there. My foot went through the floor, not the bed or anything else. Seemingly we are at an impasse. We don't want to pay $450 to fix an issue caused by faulty installation. And he refuses to admit that the installation was flawed. *Strange how he can not find me in his files, but he texted my wife just fine....* read more

Melvin's team took out all the old carpet from my stairs & top level, replaced it with engineered wood, and installed beautiful oak treads for the stairs. The attention to detail--especially matching flooring and stair stain to my other levels was really really fantastic. I really appreciated how responsive Melvin and his team were to my questions and requests. (for example: I had requested some additional stain to keep for me so I could fix where builders missed a spot, and once I pointed out my concern, the crew fixed it for me. They really didnt have to and I was just explaining what I needed the stain for, but they took care of it!) We went with Melvin after getting 3 quotes on flooring. His quote was almost identical to another contractor's, with the third being double what Melvin and the other guy quoted us! We chose Melvin over the other contractor because it was clear from talking to him that he was genuinely invested in giving us a good result, not just in selling things. He pointed out small details that we hadn't thought of and overall seemed very knowledgeable and thorough. We got our hardwood floors restained, and got new carpet upstairs. The workers were friendly and professional, and the project took about 6 days. At the last minute I changed my mind about the stain color I wanted, and they were extremely accommodating, running back out to the store to get a different color right then and there. The end product is beautiful, and we are so happy we went with Melvin! The only thing I will say is that before you get your project done, make sure to ask what parts of your home will be inaccessible during the project. We were caught a bit off guard that although they were only working on the floors, all the counters and appliances in our kitchen were blocked off too (for the sawdust, which was smart, but we just hadn't thought about it). With a little warning, we would have been able to prep a bit better to not have access to the kitchen for a few days. Overall, we would hire them again in a heartbeat! He even came back after we picked a flooring style and changed our mind to allow us to view all the samples and choose a different color. I was looking for a company to do a very small, simple flooring job in a 225 sq/ft living room. I had Lowes come out and not only did they want way too much, they tried going down the hyper aggressive sales tactics route. I told them multiple times I had a time frame to look at their flooring but they were extremely unprofessional. I went on yelp and was contacted by Melvin's Floor Specialists. They were very friendly, never pressured me with a timeframe, and were responsive to my text messages. Once things were agreed upon and my deposit sent, we set the rest up. They showed up on time with a professional crew, and absolutely knocked it out of the park. No mess was left behind, mouldings were caulked, and the floor was solid with no creaking present.
