I brought dress pants to Columbus Cleaners for hemming and paid about $35. This was a final pickup, not a fitting. About a month later, the hem completely unraveled. When I called to ask about this, I was told that it's "normal" for the hem to fall out after some time and that I needed to be more careful with handling the garment. I did not mishandle the garment beyond standard wear by any means. I was also told I'd need to pay again to have them re-hemmed (they did offer a discount). I took the garment back to be re-hemmed at a discount, only for the stitch to fall out again a few months later. I will not be bringing any items back here to be tailored. I expected professional work that lasts -- instead, I got a hem that failed almost immediately and a response that did not take any accountability. Do not use their tailoring services. My wife dropped off a bridesmaid dress to be altered on August 13, 2018. We were quoted a price of $100 to shorten the hem of the dress and move 4 shoulder straps, and she negotiated a 10% discount to bring the total to $90. The price and quote noted that the dress was 3 layers, when in fact it was actually 2 layers. The hem work was completed to satisfaction despite this inaccuracy, although we would have appreciated an acknowledgement that we were misquoted and potentially overcharged given the difference in layer count. This is not where this story gets crazy. Instead, the straps adjustment is the heart of this issue and this work was nowhere near acceptable after we picked up the dress 9 days later on Wednesday 8/22. We did not review the work until that weekend, and were leaving for the wedding out of the country on the following Tuesday so we had very little time to make any repairs to the poor work on the strap adjustment. We found that only two of the straps were adjusted, rather than all 4, and only on one side of the dress. Additionally, we had requested the straps be lengthened in addition to moved. Rather than letting the straps out to lengthen them, the tailor seemingly cut the straps while she was wearing the dress at the initial drop off session, which made it impossible for another professional to complete the correct alteration. The two straps that were cut and seemingly not moved at all were then very poorly stitched back onto the dress, and in my lay opinion looked as if they might come completely undone under normal wear. As a result, I took the dress to a different tailor near my office - Vinnie the Tailor, a cash only place who did an excellent job - and agreed the work that was completed was both bizarre and poorly done. The new tailor was able to modify the straps as best as he could given the previous work same day for $20. After we had the new adjustments completed we called Columbus to let them know about our dissatisfaction. They offered to refund us the $20 that we paid to the new tailor if we could provide a receipt, however, since the new tailor was cash only I did not receive one. My wife returned to Columbus with photos of the before and after work from both tailors, as well as the dress, and they refused to make any refund without a receipt from the new tailor or concede that there had been any flaw in the work that was initially completed. They also refused to review the layer count on the dress. According to my wife, the owner was inappropriately rude in this encounter, and she was uncomfortable going back to dispute the matter further. Rather than continuing to waste our time going back and forth with a business that clearly prides itself on poor work and poor customer satisfaction we decided we would simply issue a chargeback through our credit card. To our surprise, Columbus has responded to the credit card dispute with a rather snarky letter. To be clear - we did not expect a full refund here. Any admission that the standard of work that they aim for was not met and a modest refund to account for the additional expense we incurred to correct the alterations would have been totally acceptable. Instead, they seem hard pressed to retain between $20-$90 and seem to stand behind the lowest possible quality of work in a city where there are many other great options. High quality tailoring work done at reasonable prices. My leather jacket ripped horribly and not on a seam so I wasn't sure it was possible to fix but I brought it in for them to check out anyway. They make it look brand new. The gentleman who does the tailoring is so friendly and talks to you about how he plans to fix your clothes. This place used to be a go-to for me for alterations and dry cleaning. I've gotten a few things altered for 25 dollars or under, but they just charged me 120 dollars to shorten a dress without giving me a quote ahead of time. When I asked about the price they said there were services added on for extra cost, which I never agreed to. I also asked for a much easier fix for the dress originally including simply putting in a button or hook to have the train pinned up like a wedding dress and was told it wouldn't work. I went into Columbus Cleaners on 2 separate occasions. The first was time to get measured for a tux/have a sweater sewed. The second to drop off some blankets for dry cleaning. The tailors measurements were drastically off causing the tux to run long. Additionally, after wearing the sweater one time, the rip that had been repaired busted. The Best!!! I forgot to pick up some new clothes that I dropped off for alterations. I had planned to wear them for Christmas Eve and day. I emailed the management through their web site at night time explaining the situation. The next morning I received a phone call from Mano who came over to the store in South Boston just so I could get my clothes on the morning of Christmas Eve. A day that the store is closed. Best cleaners I have ever used! My parents bought a genuine sheepskin rug from Australia in 1994 and I brought it with me to move into my first real apartment in Southie. It was in rough shape, so I called Columbus Cleaners. They gave me a much better price than the quotes I got from carpet cleaning companies and did an AMAZING job! I used Columbus Cleaners in South Boston earlier this summer to get a dress altered for a wedding, as well as a skirt. Both staff members I interacted with were friendly and very professional, and both pieces that I got altered came out perfectly! It was a reasonable price (~$40 for the 2 items, and one had a full lace layer which you could not tell had been altered AT ALL at the end!). I suggested them also to my friend who had a dress dry cleaned there with excellent service. Why do you ask... when I moved to Southie in 2006, I tried every dry cleaner in the neighborhood and was disappointed with how my dress shirts were returned (usually smaller). On a friend's recommendation, I started going to Columbus Cleaners in the South End around 2011 or 2012 (I don't remember the exact year). Billy and his team has taken care of me and my clothes. The service is impeccable and the quality of the cleaning is also top notch. It was well worth my drive to the South End to ensure expensive dress shirts were maintained properly.
