The bartender claimed I was drunk and cut me off anyway. I was at the bar talking to a girl while waiting to get a drink (the wait was long because the service is very slow, despite the bar not being very busy at all). She was clearly into me, and the bartender kept jumping in trying to talk to her too (instead of doing his job making drinks). He was doing all sorts of things to try and flirt with her and make her laugh: pulling out and showing her buckets of pre mixed cocktails, running and sliding under the bar, etc. She was engaging with both of us , and right in the middle of that, I get cut off out of nowhere. No explanation other than claiming I looked drunk, which I very clearly wasn't. It felt very clear what was going on--he wanted me out of the way. I left and asked the bouncer on my way out if I seemed drunk. This was literally two minutes later. He said no, not at all, and asked me why I would even ask that. I then told him exactly what happened and asked him to let the owner or whoever was in charge know about this extremely unprofessional conduct so they can discipline the bartender. His response was that the bartender has discretion to cut anyone off, and let me know the bartender is supposedly married so he couldn't have been flirting with any of the customers. Well, sounds like his logic is flawed--not only COULD he flirt with his customers, he WAS, and was therefore cheating. I hope his wife finds out. This is perfectly representative of Austin customer service lately and not normal in other places. I was in Tampa for an entire month earlier this year and this would've been unthinkable there. I'm not coming back.

A DJ was spinning tunes in lighted enclosure...almost like a home porch. In fact, there several women literally dancing on a table. Interestingly, one may man was dancing by himself with a pole as his dance partner. Perhaps he had too much to drink at this point. We stayed there for a short while and we were off to another one of my friend's favorite places. She ran into a couple of folks she knew while we were at Latchkey. So we chatted for a bit. This place is a whole vibe and then some.

Security here plays by their own rules. Do NOT TRUST THEM! YOU WILL GET ROBBED. "Biggie smalls" is shady- be careful!! Pick another venue for your concert. NOT worth the safety risk. The owner needs to rethink on who they are hiring and who's running their venue. YIKES! I would NEVER buy tickets for this place again. Spend the extra $$ and see your band somewhere else. read more

This venue has the most over the top, out of touch security I've ever seen at a concert venue in Austin. Emo's is a larger, more popular venue on the same block and somehow they get buy without full body pat downs and BS intimidation from rent-a-cops. TSA doesn't go as hard as these guys. I was reading someone else's Emo's review from 7 years ago saying a good beer was $7....i knew the prices kept going up since Live Nation taking over, but last night seeing the cheapest beer at $20 was just sad for what's historically a punk club. I was literally there seeing the most punk band ever, the Sex Pistols... But thank God I did the more punk rock thing and bought a tallboy of beer at the 7-eleven next door and drank it before going in so I didn't have to spend a dollar there. Security is mediocre to tough, but they are generally friendly. Parking is a bitch and now it's even harder since the city but a bike lane up and down the road next to the club. Luckily we just parked a 7 minute walk up the hill so we wouldn't risk towed in one of the parking lots. Only reason this isn't a 3-star review is that I see good bands at this venue and it's usually fun. But it's going downhill so I am looking forward to what they have up their sleeves for when they close in a month or so and move to a new downtown location. Surprise us! Then maybe AEG will fix up this venue when they move in...but I won't hold my breath.

Hoop Tea ($14.75): A lightly spiked iced tea but it was enough to hold us through the entire concert. We went to Chick-fil-A one time and Stubb's Bar-B-Q another. At Stubb's we split the ATX Burger ($16) and onion rings ($8) and both were pretty darn good. The burger came with crispy chips but the onion rings were the real winner.

I tend to avoid all things in downtown. But I'm glad I didn't ignore this. Jon Batiste is not just hype. He is the real thing. Pure talent, fully present and full of joy, he is poetry in motion. Being able to experience a performance like that at ACL, free of charge, felt special in a way that's hard to explain. As my baby used to say, it was COSMIC. Austin City Limits ran the event flawlessly. The staff was kind, organized, and they clearly knew what they were doing. Our seats were super high up, but the view of the stage below was very good. We missed part of the intimate opening set down below right in front of the VIP section (an intentional special treat for them), but it was easy to appreciate why special donors were treated to that moment up close. What really stood out was the second half of the show. Jon Batiste and his band turned the venue into a New Orleans style second line, moving through the crowd, singing/dancing/playing music, eventually making their way up to the upper levels by us. It was thoughtful, inclusive, and joyful. No one was left out of the experience. The night itself was bittersweet in hindsight, but the music and talent was undeniable. The memory stands on its own. Thank you, Austin City Limits, for a night I'll always remember.

Tonight was a lot of fun but that one staffer kept pushing people back out of the walkway if they didn't listen after the first time he asked them. Unnecessary. Luckily they don't do that on nights when it's less crowded, but honestly they should never be putting their hands on patrons. As far as food...i think they have a hot dog thing on July 4th weekend and a pancake party during SXSW but otherwise you won't get food here. But they have in and outs if you are over 21 . And the beer prices aren't horrible if you're here on a night with a good band. They are high though any other night for just hanging out (and you should drink elsewhere).
