Loved Mary Patterson Broome's set last night! Great crowd and fun space. However the host was a let down, he opened the show with some very blue comedy. Which I find to be cheap and weak, he made very sexist jokes. He talked about women's boobs and not being able to hear what a woman is saying if her boobs are large. I can laugh at crude humor but this was straight up sexist. The other comics were great and had hilarious material and delivery. I will definitely be back to see more shows but I don't support outdated,sexist humor that belittles minorities and encourages social ideologies. Comedy heights do better. Great clean comedy. Last night they had 5 comedians and all were great. It is free but they pass a basket around for donations. Small venue that fills up with standing room only. They don't sell any drinks or food (I think they are missing out on a great opportunity) . It's gets hot towards the end but it didn't bother me at all. Mostly clean jokes but not family appropriate at least not last night. Comedians interact a bit with the audience but there was no picking on the audience which was nice. I experienced Comedy Heights with a small group of friends for the first time last night. My expectations were a bit low being that the show is free. I was totally blown away. The show was great. I laughed nonstop and even conjured up a few hearty snort laughs. The space is small, a bit cramped and gets warm so I suggest dressing in layers. The coffee next door is good and you can pretty much bring anything in (food or drink) that you want. Since the show is free they will ask for tips for the comedians so bring some cash, they really put on a great show so please tip. I'm looking forward to coming back. I was in town visiting SD on one of those rare rainy days, and figured why not go to a comedy night? Something new, something different - and hey, no cover, so nothing to lose right?! I was really amazed and impressed with the show! I thought the comedians were top notch and sooo funny!!! Maria and Al were awesome; super friendly and hilarious on stage. I loved the ability to get drinks from the cafe or the store across the street and bring them in... Nice to not have the pressure of "2 drink minimums." So casual and friendly - and wow, the place was packed! There seemed to be a loyal following and I can see why! It was definitely worth the trek out and the hunt for parking. Comedy Heights is the best free comedy show in town! I've performed here several times over the last two years, and I have loved every opportunity I've had. It's a clean comedy show, and the audience has come ready to laugh. A wide variety of talent has stepped onto the stage: from the new comics to nationally known ones. Plus it's BYOB, so none of that pesky 2 drink minimum other clubs do. The show is a tremendous success because of the people who work tirelessly to make it happen. The show was pretty good. Lots of comedians, some really good, some... Still practicing! I would've given it more stars, except we were looking for a cleaner comedy and did not find it. The ad specifically said clean & clever and I know there were several children in the audience, and yet many jokes were about dicks in faces etc. It's hard to find PG comedy, so we were really looking forward to trying this out from the advertisement. Audience "tipping" is openly "encouraged" by passing a basket around prior to the main act - but cash "contribution" is not required. Street parking is free - if you can find an open spot nearby. A special treat! I have interviewed most of San Diego's comedians on my podcast over the years and always assumed if you wanted a top notch professional show you had to pay $20 and buy two drinks. I'm here to testify "Comedy Heights" is as good or better than any venue in San Diego and there is NO cover and no drinks which was cool because I had a Caramel Mocha that was the best ever and this made the whole show enjoyable with no servers interrupting my attention. It was a small friendly room that filled quickly with comfortable seating and a quality a sound system. Maria Herman was the very funny host who did both monologue and worked the audience between the performers. Tony Calabrese who is a 20+ year veteran killed with his harmless but insightful political observations, and Italian and Jewish takes while improving with the crowd like a Las Vegas veteran. Next up was newcomer Jordan Parker with his thinking man's take on current events and politics, he'll be one to watch for. Heather Zagone was one of those pros who starts the conversation about her life, telling of touring with the USO to the middle east and her job at a bank in a manner that keeps you laughing throughout her entire act while making you feel like she's talking just to you, really a great style. Then we were honored with something I've been wanting to see for a long time a comedy DUO! Winston's OB Icons Jesse Egan and Jeff Bilodeau went on stage and just started talking with perfect timing. They never cut each other off but never let a beat happen between their quick quips. About 10 mins in I was wondering if they had started their act or were two guys who knew each other so well that everything they said about each other got a laugh. I still don't know but the audience didn't want it to end. The headliner was was another San Diego Icon of at least 20 years who has appeared on both HBO and Showtime comedian Chris "Zooman" Clobber. If you've never seen Chris before you need to. He brings his own weird but not too weird polished act like you've never seen. He starts with a harmonica then does a beautiful imitation of birds with accents, weaves his self described "not normal" view of the world and ended up treating us to a brief description of his grandmother's steam powered marital aid. Chris delivers with a smirk and labored voice that would crack up a crowd even if he just read a cookie recipe. Comedy Heights does have different performers every show so be sure and go to their website to see who's coming. Again they charge nothing but will pass a tip basket around only once so don't forget to bring some cash to show some love to a group of top notch performers that definitely deserve it! I used to spend my Saturday evenings at home watching movies on Netflix and stroking my cats but then I started going to the strip clubs in the seedy parts of town literally throwing money away in the air at the dancers but yet I was still unfulfilled. I became friends with some of the local comedians who told me about Comedy Heights. They put on great shows and never disappointed me with the enormous talent they booked. I even had the distinct honor of performing my brand of "comedy" here several times. It changed my life because now I am one of the most popular and highest paid comedians in town. Like any comedy club you get some mediocre performances but you can also get some awesome ones. Last Saturday night was one of those that had us truly rolling on the floor. But you can count on a small, intimate venue. No charge to enter, no purchases required, or available. Bring what want to eat or drink. Pay what you want when they pass the hat. Best of all.... The shows are clean, and still funny. The occasional f-bomb will slip out but what the heck...... Even Custer would have been excused if he had asked "where the f*** did they come from?". I really appreciate what these guys are doing. A free comedy show where you can byob and they encourage you to run across the street to the liquor store or Twiggs before they start the show. It's something fun to do on a Saturday night. Get there a little early to find parking and enjoy the walk over. The venue is a little sketch. My bottom hurt from the folding chairs after sitting for an hour and a half. It was also a hot night and the room got warm and stuffy despite the many ceiling fans. I can't give this place a higher rating because the caliber of comics has room for improvement. The better comics still needed to fine tune their jokes a bit and there were several others that just needed to stop. The difference between open mike night at The comedy Store and here is that at The Comedy Store the comedians are working on their jokes and testing out their material while here it seems like this is the final product and it is meh. I do think it is a great find for the neighborhood and I would go back to see some other (hopefully better) comics in action. read more
