Maria Herman is not only a very funny "Aussie Chick," but a wonderful coach. I contacted her in the spring, looking for advice on how to help one of my 12th-grade students venture into the world of professional comedy. Maria responded by inviting him to meet with her, and from there, connected him with several other local comedians and classes in the area. Throughout the month, Maria coached him in not only how to perform on stage, but also how to live the lifestyle of a comedian. She was forthright in her feedback and genuinely interested in supporting him. I had the pleasure of meeting with her during his "externship" experience and observing how she helped him to carve out a plan of action to truly entrench himself in the day-to-day lifestyle of a comedian. It was hard work, and she was insistent that making it as a comedian is about "doing the work." She left a great impression on my now-graduated student not only about how to craft and deliver a solid joke but about what it means to be a professional. I had the pleasure of seeing her onstage at The Comedy Palace where she even put my student on stage to try out a bit they had worked on. The show itself was great! My cheeks hurt from laughing at the various comics, especially headliner Drew Lynch (of America's Got Talent). I will definitely be back. I love coming here! The comedians they bring in are funny and I never leave without a good laugh. They also let you BYOB and allow food to be brought in too. This comedy show is completely free. At the very end they hand around a basket for whoever wants to give money for what you think it is worth. This comedy show makes for a very laid back and enjoyable evening. The comedians are actually pretty good, and it's a very intimate setting so they interact with you which is fun. You can bring your own beer/drink and enjoy the show. Literally one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday night! It goes from 8-10 and they never fail to make me laugh! You can bring any snacks or drinks that you would like and the location is in a really cute part of town for walking around or grabbing a drink before the show! ALWAYS love this place! Maria, the host, is an absolute riot and she selects the BEST comedians. On the evenings we have been here, often comedians come in from LA to try out their stuff, and from across the US. Its like a breeding ground for NexGen we'll be seeing on cable! We like to go early to grab a great parking place, stroll around the neighborhood to discover a fun new restaurant, then grab a coffee and desert at TWIGGS next door and get our seat early (though there are really no bad seats here) Foul language and x-rated stuff is discouraged, so I've brought my coworkers, family, friends and dates here. I had the pleasure of getting booked at this show and performing a few weeks ago. I must say the experience was nothing but a delight from top to bottom. Maria and Al run a very professional show, and all of the comics were super hilarious (including me!) The room is staged very well, with enough seats to make it a good night out, but small enough were it's still intimate and fun. The audience ends up feeling like a shared community, engaged together in laughter. Also, the show was totally family friendly, as my good friends brought their 3 year old son to the show, and he was laughing along with everyone. I'm the type of person who doesn't like to spend money on comedy clubs, because a) I don't like to laugh in public b) I hate when the comic finds me in the audience and c) I'm not usually a fan of standup. But I have to say, when I was visiting a friend of mine in California (she is an aspiring comic), she pretty much forced me to go Comedy Heights, because sometimes she performs there (btw, her name is Valery). I had a great time! Show was awesome, a guy named Joe Rogan was my favorite act of the night. The price was right (free!) and the drinks were nice and strong. I'm a bit of a New York snob, and do tend to like NYC style (Jewish) humor (think Seinfeld, Woody Allen, Jackie Mason, Joan Rivers), and didn't think I would "get" the local California stuff, but I hit it right that night. My wife and I found Comedy Heights well over a year ago. The room itself is a little bare bones, but then again it's all about the comedy. The producers, Maria and Al, have really done a great job putting together a wide variety of comedians on a weekly basis. The shows are always different and never dissapoint . The only problem I see coming is that with the crowds growing on a weekly basis, it won't be long until this show is going to have to find a much larger venue to accomodate everyone. The parking is a little tough in the area, but I've always found something,. So don't let the parking keep you from attending a show. I should mention that since the venue is attached to Twiggs Coffee Shop, I normally head next door, get some coffee and get ready to laugh read more
