I didn't expect there to be a contender for bomb Mexican food outside of the major Bay Area cities, but Comelones Tacos proved me wrong. I was here on a short business trip and stopped by for a meal because I was craving Mexican food. Looking at the menu, I was amazed at the different options and variety of drinks they offered. Had to try the Ube horchata, birria, burritos, and the tacos. Everything came out pretty quickly and the meats were tender, good quality, and filling. I would say the ube horchata was refreshing, but after a while, it felt too sweet for me. I'm not complaining about getting such a big cup of it, but I definitely think 2 people can share 1 drink and be really satisfied. I also got some carne asada fries (not pictured), and those were also bomb. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed the friendly staff, food, and was pleasantly surprised at my experience. My boyfriend and I picked up burritos from this spot, it's a small spot tucked away in the back of the plaza. They offer a few seats indoors, but it seems more like a "to-go" spot. I got the surf and turn burrito and wow! You're definitely getting bang for your buck. The CA surf and turf burrito was delicious, packed with meat, fries, pico, and more. My chips were a bit stale which was not a big deal but the salsas could definitely be better. Nothing more disappointing when you find a good spot for tacos/burritos but the salsa is not up to par. read more

Everything was fresh and delicious including their latest offering, churros! Loved my shrimp taco with lots of shrimp and it goes well with beans and rice though the rice wasn't fluffy today and had no flavor. Solid spot. Been seeing a few movies now here at the Orinda Theatre and there's some nice spots nestled in this area. Tried this spot today before a movie because a burrito sounded solid. It's a small spot with a few seats inside and some outside. The guy that took my order was great and had me in and out quickly. I ordered the carne asada burrito and a horchata. Headed to Comelones before dropping off a friend at BART - I've been nursing a mild quesabirria addiction & was lured in by their taco plate. My friend had 1 Asada Taco ($4) and 1 Birria Taco ($4). I ordered the $15 Quesabirria plate & an Ube Horchata ($3.50 for 24 oz ). I'm biased, but I think I made the better call. I was smiling from the second the Quesabirria arrived. The consomme accompanying the quesabirria was perfect - the onions & cilantro were finely diced, to be added to both the tacos & the consomme. The Salsa Verde paired perfectly with everything, and their free chips & salsa were also great. The Ube Horchata was undoubtedly a sugar bomb, but a uniquely delicious one. I used an iPad kiosk to order, which will send a text when your food is ready & an emailed receipt. The lag on the texts were about 20 minutes, and the lag on the receipt was a few hours. Np if you're not depending on the notifications, but I can see where that could get dicey if you weren't sitting & waiting near the counter. The guys cooking the awesome, 5-star food are also running the front counter, with immemorable interactions. If you're looking for anything other than a to-go experience, you may be disappointed. I also found the metal chairs a fitting accompaniment to a pretty chilly dining room. Not super cozy; eating in your car or taking food to-go may prove most comfortable. In all, I did not leave disappointed, and if I lived in Orinda I'd certainly be here more frequently. A return trip for a Shrimp Torta may be in order. See you around! read more

Bad tacos!!! I ordered al pastor and the meat was clearly not marinated. Not to mention poorly seasoned and made with ridiculously big, carelessly prepared chunks. The meat and salsa were bland and there was almost no spice. On top there was uncooked, cold pineapple. Pineapple only works with an actually good street taco. I ordered catering and from the beginning, the owner Eric, was unprofessional. He spoke (via email) to me like I was his friend and was pushing the combo kits on me. I asked a few questions and he would only answer 1 or 2 of them, causing me to repeat the question. I received quotes for full trays and salsa. When we picked up the order, all trays were half trays. Eric and I texted back and forth and he stated that he quoted me for half trays. He stated that I had to go back to the restaurant and pay for more half trays. It is very clear in our email exchange that he quoted me full trays. In fact, when I ordered a half tray, it was cheaper on the invoice, indicating even further that he quoted full trays. He also overcharged me on the first invoice by $10, but since he was already difficult to work with I just paid. In short, we were in a bad position because the party was starting in an hour. We drove back to pay for additional 1/2 trays. He did not apologize for the confusion, blamed me, sent me another person's invoice to prove his price and it was not even for trays, it was for kits. Even though all of our communication was in writing, he continued to blamed me. In essence, I paid over $700 for : 1 1/2 full trays of meat, 1 tray of shrimp, 1 of rice and 64 oz salsa. And, they charged another unauthorized $60. I am disappointed about his dishonesty and poor business practices. I only solicited him because I wanted to support a local small business. read more

LOVED the beef and chicken tacos and chicken quesadilla, plus complimentary chips/salsa. The server was very friendly and welcoming. I've been wanting to check this place out for a while now and I'm so glad I did! The staff were so friendly and so patient with me while I decided what to get. I ended up getting small nacho fries with Carne Asada, three quesabirrias, and a ube horchata. I feel like you can never go wrong with nacho fries it had the perfect amount of fries, cheese, meat, and it even came with guac. Quesabirrias are typically too heavy for me, so I don't know who I was ordering three of them. One or two would have been perfectly fine for me on this day. The birria was very tender and the consome was very flavorful and delicious. The ube horchata had my heart, it was so dang good. I really enjoyed the flavor and how sweet it was. I do wish their hot sauces were spicy, but I can also understand considering the demographics they're typically feeding in Orinda. Can't wait to come back! read more

I honestly was too skeptical to hear a taco place in Orinda was good so I had to try it out. I am pretty picky with my tacos but I have to say the ones I got (carne, shrimp, al pastor, birria, carnitas), these were all so good. If I had to choose my ultimate favorite one, it's the shrimp taco. I had such a great shrimp taco in San Diego that it inspired me to find something similar to that taste and I'm glad I can say this place is my SD shrimp taco dupe. I came during a busy time but service was excellent and on point. The food came out hot so I had to be careful to not burn my tongue! I also got chorizo nacho fries. It definitely reminds me of steak fries (would definitely want to try to the steak fries to compare the one near my house one day) and I really liked the toppings combined. I also hate horchata but I somewhat got convinced to try their ube horchata and actually changed my mind about hating horchata. What people describe horchata as a cinnamon toast crunch was what I tasted in the ube one. Sweet but not too sweet. Cinnamon-y but not too overpowering. There's not much indoor seating in the restaurant. There's honestly 2 tables and the rest is outdoor seating but when I meant I came at a busy time, literally all the seats were taken and lots of people did to-go orders. They were also not wrong about the restaurant playing Bad Bunny but I honestly enjoy that! Being honest, prices are pretty comparable to any taco joint during this economy but I am glad that parking is not an issue here! P.S. Shrinkflation takes 5 stars down to 3. I really like this place. I get take out here 2-4 times a month and never had an issue. I really their food- it's fresh, quick and friendly people. The last two times have been interesting. Last time, I asked for a second salsa and the employee said the owner charges for it. Just 50 cents but jeez. Nickel and diming your customers is dumb in the long run. Plus it's embarrassing for your employees to have to say it. This time, I thought maybe they added a kiddie burrito to the menu and accidentally gave me that instead of a regular size. It seemed to be about 1/2 the size of what I normally get. It's not like I want to eat a huge amount of Mexican food, but it is like 'Really? You changed your portions that much at the same price?' It's ok to increase your prices instead of acting out your profit margin fears on your customers. Maybe change your description of your burritos in your bio to reflect a more realistic expectation. read more

Against the law and my mothers advice, I was on my Yelp app while driving on highway 24 looking for something to fix the pain and hunger. Deep inside a very cute little center, Theater Square, filled with all kinds of eateries and shops. Comelones is cute, nice ordering menu, and a few tables inside and out. I went for 3 tacos, $3.50 each: carnitas, chorizo, and birria. My plate was full. Each decorated a little differently with salsas, radishes, shredded cabbage, carrots, and sour cream. Nice! However, the carnitas and birria was very saucy and oily. The chorizo, on the other hand, extremely dry. All three were very bland. Overall, I didn't like them. So, it gets an average score from me. Amazing price point for this area. $3 tacos - can't go wrong. I ordered one of each. I wanted to try them all. My favorite was the carnitas. Super super good. I also love that they have a vegetarian option. They put green salsa on all of their tacos and I asked to try the red. I think the owner (?) was so kind and gave me a side of it. He said he was trying the flavors out and I think the red salsa was 10/10. Also love the peppers and carrots, plus the nice little cup of curtido on the side. I would totally go back. The ordering process was painful - brand new employee who was clearly untrained and not particularly friendly. Literally took ten minutes to order a burrito and a water and she screwed it up anyway -- good grief. The guy making the food finally came out and helped her and handled it. Burrito was bland, mostly rice- barely any cheese, cream or guac. Even the refried beans were sparse. I asked for spicy salsa and it was ok but it was more like a paste. They added something pickled. Maybe it was in the paltry amount of pico de gallo? Very weird and not pleasant or expected. Inside was freezing cold - might be why the new person seemed unhappy - and there's only one table.
