This was a really fantastic dinner at a nice small family-run Italian restaurant. The servers got really busy right after we got here, but both of them worked really hard to keep an eye on their tables. They offered bread service with herb olive oil, which was lovely. The house salad was generous with the feta cheese and croutons, and the balsamic dressing was nice and tart. My wife had the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken. The pasta tasted almost homemade and the Alfredo sauce tasted like a real house made Alfredo, not something from a jar. I had the Chicken Parmigiana and asked if I could have vodka sauce on the spaghetti, just because it's one of my favorite sauces. They were happy to oblige, and it was truly delicious. Our daughter was happy with her penne noodles with butter and cheese... Lol. Hopefully at some point, she orders more than that! We will definitely be back next time we are in Kalamazoo. read more

I have driven by this place for YEARS, but never stopped in until last Tuesday--a girl's dinner. The menu has a nice variety from simple to elegant fare, but I have no doubt that they take the same great care with each dish they prepare. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs, which was extraordinarily delicious, as well as the garlic cheese bread which was buttery and garlicky, with just the right amount of mozzarella. There was plenty to share. I also enjoyed my first ever Aperol Spritz, and it won't be my last! For a Tuesday, the dining room was surprisingly quite full. We sat in the front room, near the window. Perfect seat to watch the MAGIC come out of that tiny kitchen! We started with the mussels and goat cheese. Both were delicious. For entrees we had the encrusted sea bass and lasagna rolls. The sea bass, served with carrots and potatoes was generous. The small lasagna portion (2 rolls) was A-OK because the flavors were amazing. If you get a chance, sit in the back for a totally different vibe. Still great food! read more

Comemsolis was always a favorite. Decided to take my son and wife, from Virginia, there. I realize that weekends before a holiday are extremely busy, but this visit was dissapointing I waited for my party at the bar, but never got offered a drink. We were seated at a table in a corner behind two large, round tables full of customers. Our server had a difficult time getting to us, which made it seem that he gave us the least amount of attention required. Our dinner took almost 2 hours with large amount of time between seating, drinks, appetizers, meals and checks. The appetizers were great! However, the shrimp scampi was a big disapointment. It seemed that the linguine wasnt drained well, so it was just a watery mess with no hint of flavor, especially garlic. The server never came by to see if the entrees were acceptable. I felt like I should eat it anyway because it would take forever to get a replacement. No offers of grated cheese to top the pasta, so it remained dry sitting in the water sauce. My daughter in law said the chicken marmalade was very good as was my son's beef short ribs. Sigh! read more

OMG!!! Great service and delicious food!! This does not come up in a search for vegan options. However, when I told my server Will I was vegan he said no problem. He hooked me and my partner up! His service was exceptional. The wine was delicious. My food was amazing . I had the tomato basil pasta and had them add mushrooms and make it vegan. I ate way more than I should have and I had a to go container. My partner had a vegan pizza. He ate all of it. . The appetizer of brussel sprouts was also made vegan. Definitely going back! Change can be great! I noted that Comensoli's had a new menu so we decided to induldge in some deliciousness! We had made reservations as seating is limited here and I would recommend making those if you go. We ordered the Risoto and Frutta De Mare and were delighted when our selections arrived. The food was great: Rich, flavorful, creamy and portions were generous! The only difficulty was the many street closings for construction and parking can be challenging. So we show up 20 minutes before the kitchen closes and are seated quickly. We order a goat cheese appetizer -- insanely yummy. We ordered the pasta and salmon and the pasta with local mushrooms. All insanely good. The service was best of the best. We are from the east coast and thought the food here, especially the pasta was first rate. We'd highly recommend this restaurant. First time here. We were celebrating 2 WMU grads!! Seated quickly right at our reservation time. Service was good. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Two things that could be of help to others are a little noisy and hard to hear in the back room when it's crowded and an automatic 3% charge to use a credit card but at least it is written on bottom of menu. I hate to give it 2 stars but I have to at this point. I came here years ago I think when it had another name but who knows. But this was pretty bad, especially for almost $100 for 2 people after tip. The server was very nice however the ticket times were very slow. I didn't clock it but maybe 25 min and the place was half full. The pasta sauce was like soup and very watery. The mussels were not even warm. I almost gave it 3 stars but after leaving my wife said that her food was not good either. Shame. I don't like to do that to local restaurants. My hope is to come back in several months and see if there is an improvement or if it was just an off night tonight. read more

I don't typically post when a restaurant does not meet my hopes and expectations. But with this post I'm hoping the owner / manager / staff reads this and takes it to heart to make improvements. First, the people were very nice and the server was a very kind, sweet lady that tried to be accommodating and helpful. That goes a long way. Next, its a charming location with 10 tables or so in the main dining area, which made for a warm and inviting location. But the challenges were real. First, we received water and the glasses were dirty. We did not notice it at first. There was stuff stuck to the glass. We then ordered wine and when we received our wine glasses we saw what looked like dish washer grit stuck to the glasses. We asked for new glasses and the server apologized and brought two new glasses with the same problem. In the interest of drinking our wine, i said i will polish them myself and she brought me a coffee filter and said that is how she polishes them. The coffee filter method would not get off the obvious grit on these glasses. So i took my bubbly water and poured some into the wine glasses and proceeded to polish using my napkin. This stuff was stuck on. So after 3-4 iterations, the glasses were both finally polished and we poured our wine. We ordered a "thin crust" Margherita pizza, a side salad w balsamic dressing, shrimp scampi, and tomato basil pasta (no butter). When the pizza arrived, it was a surprise. This looks like a cracker with the cook drizzling canned diced tomatoes on top of the cracker and then putting some cheese on top. When biting into the slice it made a "crunch" sound like biting into a very stiff cracker. We were starving and so we ate it. It just did not taste good. Cheese had no flavor and the cracker was a terrible approach at thin pizza dough. When the salad arrived, the lettuce had dirt on it. At first i just pulled out the dirty pieces but at a certain point i just said "enough." When the entrees arrived, it was clear that the person cooking is not a chef or a trained cook. The shrimp scampi had little flavor and the tomato basil had overcooked angel hair (to the point of being borderline mushy) and there was a ton of olive oil saturating the dish. It also had little flavor. So with some chili flakes, salt and pepper, we seasoned the dishes and they were better. But these were pretty poor performances by the cook and whoever created the recipes. The seafood was good (not fishy) and the salad dressing was very nice. But it was a mess otherwise. Feedback to owner 1. Get the dishwasher fixed. Its spraying remnants on dishes and drying it on. 2. Fix the thin crust recipe. Order a dough that is intended for pizza not a flatbread. Or change how you describe it on the menu. 3. Train the cook. He has to be able to season the dishes properly. If tomatoes come in a little green, maybe season with this or that. If he doesn't know how to do that, train him. And pasta should be served al dente, not mushy, unless the person ordering wants it more cooked. 4. Finally, the server should have seen we were struggling and at least offered to comp something. She did not mention a thing. 5. Dirt in salad is a food safety issue. Unless the package says "pre-washed" you have to wash lettuce. If someone gets sick, it would be your fault for not taking proper food safety precautions. Perhaps choose to order pre-washed (triple washed) lettuce and save yourself the money on labor. I am hopeful these changes can be made quickly and the food will be top notch for all to enjoy. read more

Comensoli's catered our backyard wedding and everything was super tasty, and the event was executed seamlessly! We first went to the restaurant in the Winter and had a wonderful evening with tasty wine and great pasta and salmon. The cannolis... I mean... so good. After that we said, definitely catering the wedding. It was easy from the get go. They were organized and great with communication as well as being great folks to get to know. I'm redoing this review! I was pretty disappointed with my exotic mushroom pasta! New years Eve. My dinner wasn't up to par with what it usually has been. I took home most of the pasta and my antipasto salad. I heated up the pasta for 3 minutes. Last night I could have called my review "Where in the World did the Mushrooms go? Cooking the pasta dish in the microwave for 3 minutes made a big difference I smelled the garlic and found the mushrooms! I feel the Exotic Mushroom was a victim of a full restaurant on New Years Eve. I hope next year they will have a menu of their best dishes in 2025! Stay away from a seafood dish like the stew. The seafood tasted old to my husband. I ate the shrimp which were over cooked. They were chewy! Fish from Sea to Table is fabulous! Very fresh It comes frozen. I travel frequently for my job and make it a point to support the local establishments. This evening, I was craving pizza which I'm extremely picky about the crust and the way it's prepared. After I researched several Italian restaurants close to my hotel, I opted to give Comensoli's a shot. Wow!!! Two thumbs up on the Margherita pizza and the Italian wedding soup was probably the tastiest I've had to date. Would not recommend. My fiancée and I LOVE Italian restaurants, so when we first heard about Comensoli's after only living in Kalamazoo/Portage for a month or so, we were pumped to try it. When we walked in, we instantly thought it was a nice cute place due to the environment. However, once we sat down and later ate our "food", we thought differently. Our food had looked just like someone had just threw it in the microwave and served it to us (and tasted like it too).
