I want to upgrade my previous review. Since then I have dined here several times and enjoyed my meal. My fave is the Dominican stewed chicken with 2 sides. On Thursday's it is the daily lunch special for only $9.99. The leg and thigh are served over rice and with the chicken gravy. Absolutely delicious. Love that gravy. Several of their side dishes are very good too. Those green beans are rock stars and the Mac n cheese gooey and creamy. Those are my favorites. I have also tried their pork chop and the brown gravy that it is served with over a bed of rice is much improved without that peppery slant I experienced a few years ago. My most recent visit was for the catfish. The large filet was very good with a cornmeal crust. The fries were the standard frozen out of the bag and the tostones ok though not to the level of the green beans and Mac n cheese. It's counter service here with a nice interior and there is plenty of parking, Soft drinks are $4 and dinner is more expensive. Comfort Foodies is where Southern Soul meets the Caribbean!
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. I arrived after work about an hour before they were closing on Friday. It wasn't that busy but the lady who took my order Ciara was very pleasant. My food arrived super fast. The place looked really clean as well. As for the food, I got: Dominican Style Brown Stew Chicken: 5/5 the chicken was super tender. It came with a leg and a thigh, not skimpy at all on the portion size. Great flavor. Caribbean rice (upgrade for $2): 5/5 it seems a little pricy for the amount of rice but then again I don't think this dish would be as good without it. The rice was great, more on the wet side but not soggy, that's just the flavor and style of rice. It's really good and has a good amount of the peas in it. Mac & Cheese: 4/5 the flavor wasn't what I expected. It's a very seasoned Mac and cheese, not bad just different. I did think it was slightly overcooked. The noodles were very soft, almost mush. And I tend to favor a softer Mac and cheese noodle. It could have been because I got there later in the day. It was good enough that I would try this one again to see if it was just a one-off situation Collard Greens: 2/5 probably my biggest disappointment of the meal. I love, love, love collard greens. And I was ready for that smoked turkey flavor. But this weirdly tasted like crawfish boil. I can see the chunks of turkey but I can't taste it at all. Literally crawfish boil water. The texture of the collard greens is perfect though. Even though I like crawfish, it doesn't compliment the collard greens. I would definitely try them again. I probably won't try the collard greens, even though a small part of me is hoping it was a fluke. But definitely the Dominican chicken and the rice and peas. Next time I'll probably try the green beans and some other side.
Use to be my favorite place to get oxtails and good sides. What a disappointment. I been here at least four times to dine-in, and three times for carryout. Was just falling in love with every meat empanadas here they have. I use to come here passing up Carribean Hot Pot up, one of my other Carribean spots before this happened. Well the welcoming has become so dry here, so I decided to go carryout thereafter lately. But this particular time, the owner always being there with two workers in front, one server and cashier. I dined in at this time. Atmosphere hasn't been the same since often coming. Another thing, so if I'm dining in, shouldn't I pay after my experience? Which pay first has been there protocol since coming, but on this day last year...Smh. Paid for dinner there...I wonder also, why do people want tip options at payments before you get food and drinks. I just don't believe tipping for a service until I'm done, and base on how the experience was. But again food always taste good with good ingredients, sauces and seasoning...but there was a nat fly in my sweet tea glass after almost drinking it down, which I noticed after my meal was almost done. Bad look here. Not good. Was it more there unknown by me, don't know. Either un-clean glass or get the bugs out of the restaurant... So the server came to check on me, and I mention it so. She then offered another sweet tea...I was damn near done then, and terrified then, and the what if's. Eating or drinking a bug possibly. This bug thing, made it gross for me, moving forward. Not cool. So I was waiting on a better explanation than another tea, cause my food was pretty much done. Maybe half off your meal or something..., but nothing. Almost like have a good day, and see you again type of stuff...I was so mad, and didn't even report it to the owner on shift, which is always there. I was ready to go and it be my last time here. But the vibes in the past seem selective to certain customers even though everyone has the same money spending, I've been noticing overtime. I seen this often, owner comes out sometimes, maybe judgemental, but to a whole family with greetings, and brings plates out...but you and your homeboys, she's behind the front counter, like you ain't growing her business. No gimmicks. It's the vibe now here and that bug thing, I can't do. Food is amazing, but I'm a very careful person and clean, and so this is not clean enough for me no more. That's why I don't tip upfront for that reason. Let me see your attitude and service and I'll consider then. And food for two isn't cheap here almost 70-80 dollars depending on drinks, like Pappadeaux prices to not be noticed at least by staff. But been wanting to review this place and so happen this experience and my phone of old photos came to light today. Not being Negative at all. Others may experience better all the time here, but that one time for me was over. And this was my last time coming here for all the reasons I mention, and record.
I've been here three times trying to give the restaurant a fair shake. First time they were too close to closing and we decided not to stay as they were 20 mins from closing. Second time had the ox tails and they were good. This time went for Latin Restaurant Week and my daughter wanted plantains. We came an hour before closing and they were out of ox tails, ox tail empanadas, shrimp empanadas, and the pork chops. Finally, they didn't have macaroni and cheese. That means half of their Latin Restaurant Week menu was not available. We settled on the chicken and empanadas available with a cocktail. The service wasn't bad by any means, but when the menu is so reduced it definitely impacts the experience. The restaurant itself is clean and has a nice setup. I just wish they had their food ready to go every time. I really wanted this to be a go to spot, but I think I'll keep going to Esther's... even though it's further away they always have their menu stocked.
Stopped in for brunch with a friend. We ordered the catfish and grits and lambchops and waffles. It was no wait, seeing that they had only been open for about 30 minutes. There was plenty of parking, it's in a convenient location, and the service was good. The lambchops were cooked well and had good flavor. My friend wasn't a fan of the sauce from the lamb being all over the waffle. The catfish and grits were decent nice fry to them and nice flavor to the grits. The creole sauce was a nice addition. I do think the catfish was slightly dry, but overall, it was a good meal.
Food for my SOUL!!! Have you ever had lamb chops with a Belgian waffle for brunch? Neither have I... until we ordered the Honey Balsamic Lamb Chops & Waffle from Comfort Foodies! The tender, game-y & savory lamb served with the super-fluffy and slightly sweet waffle were a pair I need more of in my life! Both items were outstanding by themselves, but together they are a mind-blowing combination! We also tried the Oxtails, which were rich & buttery - melt in your mouth. The Caribbean Rice & Beans were the perfect compliment to soak up the gravy. The sweet plantains were perfectly cooked and just the right level or ripeness - not too mushy or oily. Now, I have to be honest: some of the other sides and desserts weren't as remarkable. The collard greens were missing some flavor. The cornbread was super dry. And, the Guava Cake wasn't anything remarkable. But, I would absolutely come back for the delicious entrees. Enjoyed our meal!
Was kinda hungry and kinda not but I walked in this place the Tuesday special was amazing. I had the chicken wings and southern cabbage along with mashed potatoes and let me tell you the taste of everything was Amazing. Seasoned just right chicken fell off the bones. And had a buttery taste which was awesome. I highly recommend this place very good food
Really enjoyed Comfort Foodies! I got to try the stew chicken, beans and rice, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, as well as the cornbread and mashed potatoes. I also tried the Tres Leches cake. Overall, everything was great! There was a hiccup with the cabbage because it was too mushy, however they allowed me to substitute macaroni and cheese and the macaroni and cheese was amazing! I'm so glad I got to try that. Thank you to the manager for listening and making sure I got best experience by letting me try another side! The cabbage had a great flavor - it was well seasoned and spicy, so maybe I'll give the cabbage a second try next time. I loved the stew chicken because it wasn't too salty and it was extremely tender. The meat basically fell off the bones. The beans and rice were also delicious! It doesn't look like there was much rice in the picture but there was a ton under the chicken! The only downside was that it was a bit pricey. But I understand that they may be just starting out. Definitely worth a try if you want some Dominican/Southern comfort food!
Comfort Foodies has a customer for life. This business is right off the highway with plenty of parking and a lot of seating, inside and out. They have a pretty good menu of Caribbean inspired food that is very tasty. My go to is the brown chicken stew but I have tried several items on their menu and have never been disappointed with anything I picked. They also offer a variety of frozen beverages that compliment the meals well. Their service is always polite and their food is delivered as ordered quickly. Highly recommended.
I grew up in NYC, on Dominican food ... this was a TOTAL miss !! The chicken wasn't seasoned, so it had to depend on the gravy (WEAK). The beans were ok. The highlight of the meal was the sweet plantains. The fountain soda label said Hi-C Fruit Punch .... I promise you, it absolutely wasn't. I saw this place on the morning news, I regret driving 30 minutes for this MEDIOCRITY
Everything went well, the service was great . We met the owner and she was very professional and polite. She gave us recommendations . The oxtail epenadas were so good I bought two to take on my flight home . The alcoholic beverages were a nice touch. The ambiance was a very chill vibe. The restaurant was very clean. I had the stew chicken special and it was 10/10 . No complaints I wish I lived closer.. but until next time Houston!
We were not greeted when we walked in the door, and not welcomed or thanked when leaving. I like friendly service, but this is not a direct reflection of the food. The food was pretty good, but I liked the fried chicken & waffles, the yams, plantains. The cabbage and rice& peas and greens were pretty standard. I would go back again, if I lived in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to go again. I would say it's 3.5 stars for overall satisfaction.
Visited for brunch and had a hard time choosing because so much in the regular and brunch menu sounded good. I settled for the empanadas and veggie plate and the others in my party ordered chicken and waffles and burgers. None of us complaints and almost all of us were full before we could finish our food. Both the chicken and cheese and beef and cheese empanadas were juicy and well-seasoned. The mac and cheese was delicious- it was such a pleasant surprise!! I surprised myself and shared it despite how good it was because my companions needed to know what they were missing. :) Staff was extremely nice. They checked in our table-made sure we were satisfied with our food more than once. It was extremely clean and bright inside. I will return to try out more items.

The only bad news about this visit was learning that the owner will be closing this location at the end of February. I was immediately impressed with the sparkling clean interior, spicy warm aromas, and attractiveness of this restaurant. The lady working the front of the restaurant was polite and attentive. The food was wonderful. We started with beef, spinach, and chicken empanadas. Each had a crispy crust, savory filling and great dipping sauce. Next was the fish and shrimp with fried plantains... crunchy fried goodness. Our finale was the oxtail served with rice and peas, collard greens, and candied yams. Nothing beats a good serving of oxtails and these were good. I will have to visit their Missouri City location the next time I am in the mood for soul food in a Carribbean flair. read more
Looking for some Lat-Am/Caribbean food? Braised oxtails, plantains, empanadas... This is the spot. Comfort Foodies gave me comforts from "home." I'm not from the Dominican Republic, but I grew up eating this food, as a girl from Queens, who would eat at my friend's house, after school, and her abuela was always cooking the best home cooked rice and beans, and tender arroz con pollo. I drove out here about 40 minutes from Southwest Houston and was very happy with my meal! TY Comfort Foodies! Bonus mention-- the tres leches cake for dessert... YES. Get it. They also have a kids menu, and lunch specials. Yay for that! Not many places have it anymore! read more

The food is always flavorful and delicious. Great, fast service and the restaurant is always clean. I always order online and it's ready quickly. I LOVE that they pack the sides separately so the juices don't mix. read more
This little spot popped up really close to my work and today I met up there with a friend after hearing some good things. Super clean and sleek inside, very minimalist. Order at the counter. We were lucky on the day we went and the owner was taking our order, she was very friendly and patient with us. The special of the day was a Caribbean stewed chicken that came with rice and 2 sides for $10; my friend ordered that and really seemed to enjoy it. I had to try the smothered pork chops and a beef empanadas. The pork dish also came with white rice under 2 chops smothered in a tasty, peppery gravy. Chops were decent sized and nice & tender; I think the gravy really gives the dish flavor as it's a fantastic gravy. For sides I had green beans and mac and cheese, both of which were well seasoned and tasty. The beef and cheese empanada was flaky and a good addition but to my meal but wasn't overly impressive; the remoulade type of sauce that came with the empanada however was quite tasty. Overall a nice first visit, will definitely go back and try some other items from the menu. read more

Bomb ox tails! Juicy, tender and nice flavor but I love spicy so I had to add some spice. My fam also got the empanadas and burger. Everyones food yummy and tastes so flavorful. Plus the services was really good. I look forward to trying something different next time, but I feel it will be hard to beat the ox tails.... Plus I ordered some mashed potatoes and ate with the gravy from the oxtails... mmmmm read more

I have ordered here many times via delivery service and I finally had a chance to dine in. Cute place overall! Small, not too many tables but they have a bar seating area with a few seats. I'm docking off one star for the overall cashier/table service, Mac n cheese which needs some improvement, and the fact that they didn't have any Presidente beer. Considering it's a Dominican spot and that is the national beer, I was disappointed. I will continue to eat here. read more

This was recommended on social media so I gave it a try. The meal was fantastic I had the veggie plate and my lady had the southern catfish and shrimp combo fried. Tasted the way I expected, good and the service was pleasant. If I wasn't on my diet ill explore the menu further but I do recommend it to anyone feeling hesitant. read more

YES, they are good. Do yourself a favor and just: GO! The place is clean and spacious. The patrons are all welcoming and polite. Now onto business: THE FOOD. Oh, the food! I am nitpicky, especially when it comes to customer service, food presentation, flavor and texture. Everything was delicious! See pictures. We ordered: catfish basket (it was fried to perfection , golden, and crispy; even the fries had flavor), oxtail dinner plate with (2) sides, we added an extra, and the catfish sandwich, and empanadas. The empanadas were hot and fresh, also the perfect amount is softness and crisp. The greens and yams were teeming with flavor; made similar to the way my grandmother made them. Drinks: very good, and well-balanced. I typically do. It like tequila or margaritas, but theirs were good. Go! read more

OBO Recommended I try this place so it's been on my radar to swing by when In the area. I stopped in around 630 pm. Being from NY and knowing what a smash hit a claim of Dominican and Soul food fusion can be I was excited to try it. I didn't ask too much but I'm pretty sure it was the owner who tended to me. She was sweet. I got the last order of the Dominican stewed chicken with greens and candied yams. We also got beef and cheese empanadas and Mac and cheese. I would've got a frozen drink but the machines were down So let's get into this... first let me say- if I need to order Mac - because I don't want to make it- baaaaayyybeee it's coming from here okay! It was cheesy. Noodles were cooked perfectly. It had that hint of mustard that I love. And it wasn't salty! And what it definitely wasn't is Kraft or velveta mac !! I loved that! So super kudos to the chef because Texas has yet to please my Mac n cheese palate til I found this place. Now--- if it were served in a cast iron with a golden cheese top.... That would elevate!! The empanadas are well stuffed with a yummy flaky crust. The taste of sofrito warms my soul and as apuesto Rican I appreciate that not being skipped over in an empanada recipe!! The greens- yes order them. Not too salty and a good portion of greens-- like momma says don't forget your veggies Candied yams. Yes order them too! Something's you just can't skip over ... these melt in your mouth. Packed with flavor like they cooked ever so slowly in the perfect perfect mixture of sugars, cinnamon, and vanilla ...... mmmmm Ok. So this is the last think- it was good- but not my favorite- and because I know how bottom of the pot can go I am willing to give it another try. The stewed chicken was good it was - like you can tell if the salt content was kicked back a hair or two... maybe three.. it would've been perfecttttt! But that gravy was on the meat anddd the rice so I had to ask for a side of rice without gravy to properly enjoy the chicken with rice. And then I was a happy happy girl. Overall I give the food a solid 4/5 like you can eat and be merry The restaurant it self is a bit lackluster. It sort of gave little old island joint but not. The wall mural was something reminiscent of many Latin restaurants we visit. But I'd say a bit dated. I'm thinking NO frills might be a better explanation. Like you're coming to eat... no ig moments or anything else the youngins like teehee. But I hope to see this establishment really grow into something amazing because I think the foundation is a GO! Two words.... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Let me tell you about this little gem that I've been wanting to try for some time now... the food was so good and lives up to the name of the restaurant Comfort foodies. First the service was very hospitable, they were so friendly and the music was on cue, not too loud and bonus my husband got to watch the football game... they have TV at every wall so you can see it. We came after church so we were looking for soul food, my husband had the Dominican smothered chicken, I got the oxtail, my mom got the smothered pork chop and my dad got the fried catfish.... EVERYBODY enjoyed their meal, even the kids chicken tenders were crispy and seasoned well! All sides were definitely delicious! It was so good to support a black owner restaurant....I WILL BE BACK! read more

Okay, let's get into it! Location- Great, location right off the Sam Houston Toll Road. So you have easy access to the location. The location was very clean, including the bathroom. They have about 3 large TVs that allow you to watch sports. Football (soccer), UFC, and football highlights were playing today. Their playlist had all the 90's -2000s R&B jams in rotation. Service- It was decent, nothing over the top. The wait was a little long but, nothing crazy. I appreciated the wait because I knew our food would be fresh and made to order and it was! Packing/products- To go packing is sustainable and good for transportation. Anything likely to spill they put in its own containers to avoid a mess or spilling into other food. This allows you to experience the full flavor of everything. Taste- Baaaaby, this is the best soul/ Caribbean food I've had so far in North Houston. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. Smothered Porkchop- comes over rice. This was so good and likely my favorite. I don't normally eat pork but when I do, it will be this!!!! The smothered sauce was amazing. Mac n cheese- it's not baked mac n cheese but it tastes very good. It doesn't taste like Kraft stove top. I would get it again. Steamed white rice and Dominican-style beans- so good and full of flavor. Southern Style Cabbage- seasoned well, not overly seasoned but seasoned just right. I would have liked to have some meat in it, but that's just me. Candied Yams- I loved them, not super syrupy! They tasted great and light but full of flavor. Dominican style brown stewed chicken- comes over rice, it was so good and flavorful. It was so tender and well-cooked fell right off the bone, literally! Banana pudding- nice slices of banana and vanilla wafers. Tasted fresh. Peach Cobbler- I love me a nice crispy flaky crust and this had all that! Overall- They did forget to put our Empanadas in our bag. However, one of the best I've had in North Houston! They have a nice dine-in atmosphere. This will be a spot I take the fam when they come into town! My advice, since the Dominican stewed chicken and the, smothered Porkchops come over rice. The pandemic seemed to have stifled Caribbean restaurants as it has most small restaurants. Post-pandemic, it has been quite difficult to find a Caribbean restaurant that is up to expectations of quality, taste and value. My search is over!!! Comfort Foodies...Soul meets Caribbean/Dominican style food! Food was phenomenal! Seasoned perfectly without being salt! Salt IS NOT Flavor! Disclaimer: This IS NOT a soul food restaurant, so judge it as such. This restaurant takes on some traditional soul food entrees and spin it with Caribbean Love! The oxtails were fall off the bone tender. The collard greens were Not soft or mushy and full of flavorful! The in house made empanadas were to die for. I had the oxtail empanadas ( Oxtails were my theme for the night!). Elsa, the owner is so lovely inside and out! She walked us through the menu so we could try multiple items. She also gave us a large sampling of red beans and rice, Dominican style!!! So Yummy! Thank you, Elsa! We'll be back! read more

Saw this spot on a Houston foodie page and drove out to give it a try. We were greeted upon arrival. Took a moment to glance the menu. We ordered 2 chicken, 1 shrimp, and 1 beef empanada. Side of yams. A fried pork chop sandwich with fries. 2 drinks. We sat in to eat the food this time. Food came out pretty fast. She stated the empanadas were marked but it was not as easy as it looked, at least ours. We debated and looked all over those empanadas. We were only able to see the chicken one. Hubs doesn't eat beef so I bit into one we assumed was beef and it was shrimp, so I'm happy he didn't get that one. The stamp on it wasn't deep enough for us to tell the difference. But the chicken was good. Beef was dry, needed more flavor. And shrimp just didn't taste good for either of us. Yams were good. The pork chop was good. I thought it was going to be a breaded fried chop but it was pan fried. No biggie. You can leave everything on the table when you leave as they will remove everything from the table. read more
