I came here on a Saturday night after spending the entire day downtown showing my friend around. To be honest I wanted to go in because I loved the ambiance & decor from the outside. When we went in I saw that they had gelato - although a limited amount. The cashier heard me talking about it and allowed me to try as many as I wanted (I bought pistachio & strawberry). My friend and I talked so long that the store had actually closed but the workers didn't even bother to inform us lol. Great customer service all around, will definitely comeback. read more

Such a cute place for breakfast or lunch located in the city. Unique decor and friendly staff. I come into town once a year for a conference and I will forever stay at the Westin just as long as the Commissary is right next door!!! So I may have eaten here for every meal if I wasn't with a group! Let's first talk about the cracked black pepper parmesan biscuit...I've had dreams about it since leaving Dallas lol. Flakey, light and flavorful. The avocado toast was the best I ever had. In general, the bread here is phenomenal. I'm an Italian and former pastry chef from NJ so I'm kind of a snob when it comes to bread but the Bakers here, got it going on! This is the best place in Dallas, possibly the best place in Texas. It's like sitting in a cafe in Palermo. The food is superb quality, and it is staffed with true professionals. They also have gorgeous meats like ribeye for sale and charcuterie that are made in house and supplied to local fine restaurants. We've been wanting to visit Commissary for a while now, but every time we happened to be downtown Dallas and drove by, there was a line of people waiting to order and all of the tables were full. My observations: 1. There are not enough tables. Since their limited seating is first-come, first-served, this can make it extremely challenging if not impossible to get a table. 2. This place tends to attract the 'Downtown Urbanista' crowd of 20-somethings living within a few blocks radius. 3. Some of Commissary's customers tend to be guilty of table-squatting (1-person plugged-in to a laptop hogging a table for 4? Really?). So on multiple occasions in the recent past, we had passed on eating there. Yesterday, totally by chance I was downtown and driving by when I noticed there was no line and there were open tables, so we quickly dropped-in. Ordering at the counter was fairly easy, especially using recommendations from the pleasant young lady behind the counter. Menu is limited, with about 50% dedicated to breakfast/brunch items. We ordered the Brisket Hash and the Rigatoni, with a side order of the Seasonal Greens. For light sweets, we ordered one of the Loaf Cakes with poppy seeds and a Financier. Food was delivered to the table in a timely manner. It was all hot and quite tasty. Would definitely recommend Commissary, but advise that you scope out the table situation before dropping in to avoid having to eat your food on the curb. read more

First time here today and had high expectations (can one place be a good coffee stop, butcher and bakery?!) Not disappointed. Ordered a chocolate gelato and raspberry sorbet to snack on while we waited for the rest of our food: Croque madame, salumi plate, latte and americano. All were delicious! The menu in store has a lot more than what's shown online. Waited a surprisingly long time for coffee though (finished half my meal already) and would be quite irritated had my intent be to grab a coffee and go. But! pleasantly surprised by the level of customer service we received. Will be back again. read more

Unfortunately this restaurant has gone significantly downhill in quality. They have significantly cut their menu (which is also applied inconsistently since they advertise certain dishes as "blue plate specials" on the all day menu and then don't serve them past 2:00 pm). And they have completely eliminated their specialty cakes, eclairs, and Steak fries that were some of their most distinguishing dishes. Whoever is in charge now should take a strong look at what they are doing, because they have successfully alienated many of their regulars with these unwelcome changes. This place is bright, cheery, and bustling with attentive staff. We ordered some croissants, bagels with cream cheese, and a bacon and asparagus quiche that was incredible. Order it for the crust alone. While waiting for me order, I watched the break sandwich and avocado toast roll out and let's just say that I hope we can come back here to tomorrow. Was staying at Joule hotel and this was recommended by one of their employees. We absolutely loved this place! Staff was phenomenal- incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about menu. Everything looked delicious but we tried the Avocado Toast (highly recommend!) and the Breakfast Tacos (also delicious!) Love the decor and theme of restaurant. I stumbled on this place a few months back and couldn't believe there was a scratch bakery so close to my hotel! Nice selection of cheeses, wine, and charcuterie. Welcome to the neighborhood! I think your place is awesome! I visited this morning and ordered a latte and the Cheese Grits The latte was amazing! So smooth and easy to drink, everything a latte should be. The milk temp was just right, not scalding or boiled. (Boiled milk in the morning, Yum! The coffee flavor was on point, smooth, not burnt or too powerful. I loved that I could actually drink my latte in the first five minutes after receiving it vs. waiting twenty minutes for the milk to cool. Ok! So latte, BRAVO! Cheese Grits - soft egg, roasted mushrooms, arugula, chives - Loved the grits, they were moist and full of flavor. Maybe a bit heavy on the black pepper, got a mouth of that and it was a bit much. But overall the seasoning was top notch. Normally when I order grits, I am given a file of water with a few white grains floating around. These grits were more like my grandmothers! And the soft egg on top just added to the creaminess of the grits. SO GOOD! The roasted mushrooms and arugula I could have done without. I think because the mushrooms and arugula were dressed, perhaps just the mushrooms. And I get where it was going, because it did add another layer of flavor. Maybe if I had been eating brunch not breakfast it would have appealed me more, like a nice little salad on the side. But early in the morning, a pickled taste just did not sit well on my tongue. Being from Texas, I would have much preferred some brisket or a bit of bacon. Maybe small bits of pork chop. Something that would stick to my ribs and carry me through to 2 or 3 pm when I get to break for lunch. (I'm a desk farmer, I farm paper and data and heard management cattle) Next time, and there will be a next time. The staff is very rude and ignorant. As a 10 year downtown Dallas resident, I have seen The Commissary build up from the ground and first tile. During the first few months, they were offering 1/2 off of their desserts and bakery goods after 4pm - close. Between July - September, they changed this without notifying their customers, but that's not what offended me. When I politely asked the counter girl if downtown residents received discounts, she scoffed and said "If that were true, we would be giving everyone discounts." Not only was this response unnecessary, it was condescending. Ravenna and other downtown establishments offer downtown residents at least a 10% discount, so it wasn't an unreasonable or insulting question. However the response was. With that being said, the customer service left enough of a distaste in my mouth that I don't ever plan to go back, let alone leave an optional tip they ask for BEFORE you even get your bill's total. Ridiculous and poorly run, unfortunately. read more

I had breakfast here this morning and have to say that cured meats were amazing. I'm not sure how they make their potatoes but they are some of the best I've had. This is one of many disappointments from you and your crew over the past several months. First, you removed that awesome smoked fish salad, then the sublime Posole and countless other excellent bites. I loved this place from the first day it opened and have told literally hundreds of people to come here but that ends today. You truly have messed up a good thing. Your new manager did listen to comments from me today with sincerity and kudos to him for covering my lunch and inviting me back. But it's unlikely to be enough. When all of the those new restaurants open down the street at the Discovery District, I think you'll be forced to deal with the reality that you just aren't good enough to compete. Sigh... read more

This place seems to have changed owners or at least management recently and it doesn't appear to have been for the better. My girlfriend and I have been coming here a few times a month for just under a year, we always talked about how it's our favorite breakfast/brunch/cafe spot. The breakfast/brunch menu was varied and delicious and the lattes were always perfect. We went here after about a month or so away and a lot seemed to have changed, immediately we noticed the tables towards the front were no longer there which was troublesome cause on weekends a place to sit can be hard to come by since it gets fairly busy. Then we were directed towards "the main register" closest to the bathroom which we had never been seen used in at least a dozen prior visits (we've always been directed to the register next to the coffee station and in front of the rack with baked goods on it), nothing crazy but just puzzling. The breakfast menu got noticeably smaller and less varied which is a huge bummer, we both ordered the butcher's breakfast and two lattes; we didn't get a number for our order to place on the table which is new. Then we get our food in to-go boxes which has never happened, my girlfriend said we're eating in and was wondering if we could get our meals on plates like we have before but the manager indicated they only do to-go boxes now. My order is supposed to come with potatoes but it didn't so I asked the girl at the register, she apologized and said she'll get some out to me which is fine cause sh*t happens sometimes. Another person brought out the potatoes in another to-go box along with a gift card apologizing for the mix up, cool I appreciate the gesture over a minor goof. We're about half way through our meal when we realize we haven't gotten our lattes which is surprising cause it's not super busy and they're usually pretty quick with the coffee. I go and ask the girl working the espresso machine if she got an order for two lattes, she looks through the tickets and says no but she'll get them out right away. So two mix ups which are both minor but slightly irritating cause they happened close together. She brings the coffees out (yay!) followed soon by the manager (along with a 2nd gift card) again apologizing for the delay. So now we're up to two mistakes accompanied with two gift cards. On our way out, we decide to get a loaf of sourdough cause its beautiful and delicious. Again we order at the "main register" near the bathrooms and wait for a loaf to be picked off the shelf behind the other register. Something that should have taken 30 seconds took about 8 minutes because apparently the two registers aren't communicating orders to one another as previously indicated with our coffees. AGAIN we have to go ask about our order and they quickly bag our bread and hand it to us along with a THIRD gift card. So three gift cards in one visit, we have never had any issues like this ever until now. It seems like the place has moved to try and encourage people not to sit down with their food and to take it to-go. I hope they figure their sh*t out soon and go back to how it was cause we loved this place but this last visit left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

Very willing to pay up and above the normal cost of coffee/pastries or whatever I'm feeling...if the value of the service matches the value of the price point. Maybe if you're lookin to come kill a couple hours its good, and I'm sure there's a lot of variety here I haven't explored that is really good. But a place that is downtown and open in the early morning to take 10 minutes to give me a burnt bagel is a joke. Could be cool if I came for a weekend brunch maybe, but that's not what the European-like plastic chairs/tables is telling me they're going for. This place gives me the illusion of speed and follows up with a rude awakening of slow. It's possible that I'm holding an unrealistic expectation for speed, being from the east coast. But 10 minutes to get a burnt bagel is absurd. Seriously, how hard is it to do a bagel? And there weren't any more than 5 or 6 customers. There are a lot of coffee shops around that deserve your business more than here if you have expectations similar to mine. If you're in deep ellum, go to Mokah Coffee & Tea for a relaxed but professional atmosphere. If you're coming down from Uptown area, don't go any further than Fiction coffee for a consistent product. If you're coming in from Oak Cliff, stop at Davis St. before you cross Trinity River. Those places aren't east coast deli fast but they sure as hell are faster and more professional than here. They even charge about 10-25% less for their espresso too. read more

I went to this place on a Saturday morning and the options were endless. I loved how accommodating they were and although i could only try a few pastries, they were amazing! I highly recommend the cappuccino too. The girls next to me were having the breakfast plates which i will definitely try next time. The only reason i gave it 4/5 is when they are busy your items don't come out together even if they are just ready made pastries which i didn't get until i was close to finished with my coffee. read more

Went here after we flew in from Atlanta and were welcomed by an empty Airbnb scam... 5 girls in an unfamiliar city with no where to go and we went here to figure out where to go next. THE STAFF WAS INCREDIBLE!! They served us delicious avocado toast and mimosas while they helped us figure out the area and Melina, the most amazing human ever, wrote down a list of places to go and described each place in detail!
