This Commissary is located off base, just off Mayport Road (just a quick drive from the base). Out of all the Commissary I've visited throughout the years, I think this is probably the best one I've been so far. They had a nice selection of fruits and vegetables, as well as a large frozen section. The aisles were organized and stocked (you would be surprised at how empty other stores are). However, don't get too excited by my review, there is still much to improve on, but overall this one is in much better shape than others. It's always difficult to review this Commissary because sometimes it has everything you're looking for and at other times you leave disappointed. It's really a mid-sized Commissary when compared to other ones I've frequented in the past in Hawaii, San Diego, and even Guam! I would say that this Commissary's shortage on items, or failure to replace many bought-out items sooner can be a real problem (they are limited on organic items here). And this forces me to visit to some other go-to places like BJ's or Publix instead. Still, it is a pretty full and useful food shopping center for its size. Prices are good overall, as it's available to military active duty and retirees with over 20 years of service. Anyone who has a question on whether or not they are able to use this Commissary or the one at Naval Air Station (NAS JAX) just needs to check their military ID card as it should state whether or not the privilege is extended to them. I will say the Commissary at NAS is much larger with many more choices available in all categories. I use it on occasion as well. But the Mayport Commissary is clearly an older facility but has positives, like a decent deli (though I will say some personnel working in this area need to improve their service to the customers), a decent selection in the meats area and the refrigerator/freezer section as well. Shelves are organized well overall but you can feel the older nature of this Commissary when you visit. Service at the checkout counter is good. I generally go to self checkout but I've always encountered good positivity from all the those who work this area over time. I visit this Commissary on a pretty regular basis and encourage others with the military privileges to do so as well. Recommend: MED read more

Love coming to the commissary for the prices. The meat prices are extremely low compared to other grocery stores. They are closed on Monday but I love coming on Tuesday bc everything is stocked. Sometimes on Sunday the shelves will be empty. The service is always great and everyone is friendly . read more

This is our go to Commissary located off Mayport road. Shopping selection is pretty decent and prices are almost always lowest you can find even as compared to Walmart Supercenter (especially meat items). The only drawback is that during Navy paydays (the 15th and 30th of every month), the Commissary tends to get low on stocked items by the afternoon due to the increased shopping demand. All patrons must present a military DOD ID upon entering so the Commissary is only accessible by authorized patrons. read more

Shopping with my enlisted son- I have been to the commissary before and they have some great deals on products that are inflated in price at regular grocery stores. Always interesting to see the differences. Not everything is a big price change- and sales at other stores may give you better deals on select items. So as always shop around. I have been shopping at this store for about 10 years...It has consistently gone down hill. Produce WAS always fresh , now you have to be very careful what u pick up--it will probably be moldy in a day or two. The beef was good--now you need to buy the Angus--regular beef is tough. The shelves pretty much stay empty on a lot of things--also WATCH the expiration dates. There is a lot of expired stuff stilll on the shelf. I reported it--didnt care. VERY SAD read more

Not going to sugar coat it, but I'm not going to unrightfully bash it either. This nex is at best under par. The variety in sale is great, however some of the quality is very questionable and I would say unsafe. I've been told of some of the meat being moldy, having feathers still in the chicken, and so on- which I definitely saw today while preparing my wings. If they're going to sell low quality product (veggies and meats), both from a commercial source and from deli, I would not consider buying from here. I enjoy not being taxed, and as far as dry goods I'm pretty happy about the selection- but I'm not coming here to go home, find the above in my meats or veggies or whatever, and have to drive down to the Walmart to prepare dinner for me and my wife. I had a hard time choosing the rating because this commissary is better than the last one we were stationed near. But I'm just going to list pros and cons of this location... Pros... They have a HUGE produce section, and meat section. Everything is organized neatly by aisle. The workers are very nice as well. Cons... It's off base. So I don't feel as safe shopping there. Also, There are only TWO self check outs... Why? As big as this store is, they should at least have 4 self check out registers. And the ones that they do have, have a 15 item limit. I personally prefer to go through self checkout because I coupon, and want to make sure it takes off all of my coupons. Because in the past, I've went through a normal register several times and the cashier didn't pay attention to my coupons, so they would scan but not take off of the total. To me, it means a lot to budget and save. So that extra 5 dollars I'm missing because an employee didn't take the time to make sure it took off, is on me. And I need that extra 5 dollars I should have saved to buy my son diapers... Or else I wouldn't be couponing. Over all, I would give the store 4 stars if they at least had more self check outs. Other than that, 3 stars is all they deserve, because the store is mediocre. read more

What happened to this wonderful commissary! Either the management is asleep or something is wrong. And using this commissary for many many years. They've been out of a lot of the dairy products for 5 to 6 weeks. Ever hear a Winn-Dixie or Publix running out of dairy products for multiple weeks? Somebody needs to do something read more

This is not the best military commissary. Selection is slim and restocking is not always up to par. There are no self-checkout lanes for more than 15 items. It's very dated inside and out. It's not located on Navy Mayport; it's a couple miles away near other local businesses. read more
