I had no intention of dragging out the divorce as long as the marriage. Texas family law is as frustrating as the power grid, so I needed someone who could get the job done and represent me. I wanted a lawyer who was a woman, intelligent, direct, and not too emotional. I did not need hugs, I needed a divorce. I interviewed several attorneys to represent me. Some were nice but weak, some were rage-filled and vengeful towards the spouse, and others made me wonder what some law schools are doing with their curriculum. Alex was nothing like other lawyers. Granted, she had completed law school and undergraduate studies like everyone else I had interviewed, but she was not interested in boasting about her accomplishments (which are impressive and lengthy). As I spoke to Alex, I realized that this was the lawyer who checked all of the boxes I required and many more. She did not approach the conversation like we were part of the 300 fighting off the Persians; instead, Alex respected the fact that I wanted to keep the experience as amicable as possible. I spoke with Alex before I retained her services, and she was exactly who I wanted to represent me: female, not man-hating, direct, and an aggressive advocate for her clients. She did not ask me stupid questions, and appreciated that I had done my homework before I spoke with her. I chose to vet her background before I retained Alex to see what other people had said about her legal prowess. I have yet to find a negative review of Alex's abilities as a lawyer. Everyone was complimentary, she had no issues previous or pending with the state bar, and had enough of a digital footprint that I also was able to see podcasts that included Alex talking about family law. I retained Alex's firm. That was the best decision I made in 2022. Her team is beyond amazing. Brandy has the precision and organization of a military commander. As Director of Operations, she ensures that everything flows as it should. She is prompt, efficient, and compassionate without being syrupy sweet. Katie may be one of the smartest humans on the planet. As a paralegal, she handled most of my case details. She is ruthlessly efficient, able to anticipate my questions before I know what they are, and moves paperwork through the glacially slow wheels of justice in the Dallas court system at a shockingly quick pace. Plus, she has a sense of humor, which is required when getting a divorce. If you do not laugh at some of the stuff encountered, you will cry all the time. From retainer to the "thanks for the memories" exit call, the process lasted about 5 months. The legal portion took less than four months from filing to final decree with the notarization stamp. I have friends who are still working through the process after years of issues. Alex, Brandy, and Katie were exceptionally clear when giving directions on what I needed to do, provided paperwork that needed to be signed in a very efficient manner, and always answered the emails I sent with little waiting by me. I emailed a lot, and those emails were full of questions, directions, and sarcasm. Each question was answered, directions followed, and sarcasm met with sarcasm, so we were evenly matched. I was able to keep the divorce amicable, and spent less time on the actual process than I did deciding to file for divorce. If I go through this hellscape again, and I hope I never do, I will call Alex. I cannot imagine anyone considering divorce using any other firm.

My Experience with Fathers for Equal Rights…read more I rarely leave negative reviews, but I believe fathers deserve to hear my experience before making a decision. I turned to Fathers for Equal Rights during one of the most important custody battles of my life because I believed I would receive knowledgeable guidance. I later learned that the individual I worked with the most, Kirk McCraw, was not my attorney, and to my knowledge, was not a licensed attorney. Had I known that from the beginning, I would have approached the advice I received very differently. Looking back, I learned there is a significant difference between someone sharing personal experiences in family court and receiving guidance from a qualified family law attorney. Throughout my case, Kirk advised me on litigation strategy, discussed which motions I should file, and strongly discouraged me from hiring an attorney at a critical point in my case. I wanted to request a continuance so I could retain counsel for my contempt and custody matters. Instead, I was repeatedly told that attorneys would only continue the case and delay everything. Trusting that advice was one of the biggest mistakes I made. The consequences were severe. My contempt motion failed over what I believed was a procedural issue, my custody case stalled, and I ultimately spent thousands of dollars hiring attorneys to continue fighting for my son and paying attorney's fees to opposing counsel. Months later, after retaining an experienced family law attorney, I continued presenting the evidence I had been gathering and ultimately won sole managing conservatorship of my son. Looking back, I do not believe my evidence was ever the problem. I believe my biggest mistake was not hiring qualified legal counsel from the very beginning. Another thing that stood out to me was that Kirk never wanted our conversations recorded. I often wanted to record meetings simply so I could accurately remember the strategy and instructions being discussed because he covered a tremendous amount of information very quickly. He consistently objected to recording. I cannot speak to his reasons, but after learning he was not a licensed attorney, that decision raised questions in my mind. I also paid for assistance preparing legal motions. After I eventually hired my attorney, she reviewed some of those pleadings and expressed serious concerns about their quality. Ironically, after I began using AI tools to organize my facts and draft motions that I personally reviewed before filing, I believed those filings were clearer and more effective than some of the documents I had previously paid to receive. Communication was another frustration. Whenever I asked questions to better understand legal strategy, I often felt that my questions were viewed as challenges rather than opportunities for discussion. Kirk even told me I was one of the smarter people who had come through the organization but that I could be too smart for my own good and needed to keep things simple. My expectation was that someone helping fathers through life changing litigation would encourage informed questions rather than discourage them. I also personally heard Kirk use the N word jokingly around Black fathers on more than one occasion. Some people appeared comfortable with it. I was not. Regardless of intent, I found that language unprofessional and inappropriate in an organization serving families during difficult legal situations. This review reflects my personal experience. Other fathers may have had different experiences, and I respect that. Mine taught me that when your relationship with your child is on the line, there is no substitute for hiring the best qualified family law attorney you can afford. I learned that lesson the hard way, but I eventually won sole managing conservatorship of my son after obtaining experienced legal representation. I hope my experience helps another father avoid the mistakes I made.

My opinion (for a divorce case), based on my personal experience. Although I did not hire this…read moreattorney, I had to "work" with her because that's who my "ex" hired for their representation. My main complaint is that this attorney did not notify me that my "ex" had filed for divorce, until OVER a month AFTER they filed a divorce petition with the court. I, (for some reason), was only sent an email notification of the divorce filing, instead of at least receiving a call or certified letter. Most would think (the attorney) could pay... or at least ask my "ex" to pay a few bucks to send me a notification by certified letter. (It's also sad that my "ex" didn't communicate to me that they were filing.) This happened while I was still holding out for a miracle of possible reconciliation, and I had even visited my "ex" in person at least once after the filing. (And wasn't made aware at that time either.) I'm sure this attorney was thinking that my "ex" would've mentioned the filing to me, since my "ex" portrayed to the attorney that we were in occasional contact both in person and via phone/text. However- those possible assumptions still don't excuse this attorney from notifying me in a more timely manner and by U.S. Mail and NOT email! This unnecessary delay of notification is costing my "ex" thousands of dollars in additional mortgage interest, since (my "ex") has/had to end up refinancing the family home (at a higher interest rate than those earlier in the year), in order to pay me an agreed upon amount of the home's equity. If I had been notified sooner by this attorney or my spouse, I would've gotten an attorney sooner, which most likely would've finalized things quicker, which would've allowed my "ex" to get a lower mortgage interest rate. (My research is that mortgage rates rose around 1% or so in the months following the filing.) If the amount of time spent between the actual divorce filing, and the time I was finally notified is not considered negligent by the Texas State Bar Association, I'd be extremely shocked. I certainly think it goes against most folks' common sense and common courtesy. (Especially since my spouse and I were on amicable terms.) I think my "ex" hired this attorney from a referral, and/or perhaps because they charge flat fees, or nominal fees for a (somewhat) uncontested divorce. Going with what may be at the outset, the lower priced option, will cost my "ex" more financially and maybe emotionally more in the long run. It makes me sick to my stomach and very mad, since I do care what happens to my "ex," despite what others say I should feel or think. Lastly, the wording in the original divorce filing/decree contained errors that "my" attorney had to correct. If I hadn't hired a competent lawyer who found the errors, my "ex" would be at more of a disadvantage with the original paperwork drafted by this attorney. It is possible that this attorney is more competent with other areas of law, and/or maybe she just goofed (majorly) this time, but I certainly wouldn't recommend her. Sadly, my "ex" still blames me somehow, for the alleged mistakes from this attorney. That alone says quite a bit about my whole situation! I do appreciate this attorney visiting with me on the phone for a few minutes, to explain a couple of things to me. It's a truly sad situation all around in more ways than one. My advice: Be nice to your spouse and try to meet them in the middle, because divorce stinks! It's (almost) never just one person's fault that a marriage has failed or is failing. We can all improve, and I thought everyone agreed with that, but sadly, I found out the hard way that some people think they never make mistakes in their marriage.
