Really happy that I have a great coffee shop that actually roasts their own beans on my way to work! The people in here are extremely friendly and the service is quick and efficient. I like that I can actually taste the different flavors of the beans when I get black coffee here but today I spoiled myself with a latte. They have a ton of options on their menu for true coffee, lovers, and a bunch of different coffee flavors that they roast in house that I believe you can grind and take home. All of their pastries are delicious and they even have gluten-free options. The inside is really cool if you need to come in and get some work done. I love the community seating options and the seating along the windows is a nice touch. I've been to some of the other locations that Common Grounds has and I like the consistency throughout each one I've been to. read more

Common grounds has been a staple coffeehouse in my world for many many years. I've gone to multiple, but the original one of my life is a Hamden. I love the way their shops are set up. All of though wood and brass gives it a very distinct Rustic industrial look. It's a really great space to meet up with friends or do some work. The Hamden shop is smaller than a couple of the other ones but it still has a little space in the back and outside space when it gets a little bit warmer. The people have always been very kind and accommodating. I've gotten a few things from there over the years, but the one thing I always get is the Paleo cookie! I know Paleo cookie doesn't sound very attractive, but I can promise you that it's beautiful in its own way. I go to drink at this moment is their turmeric latte with oat milk. And it takes a lot of willpower to walk away without a biscotti... Clearly I do not have that willpower. Definitely worth a stop. read more

The coffee is fine, and the staff are kind, but I wish Common Geounds took greater care with accompanying pastries. On multiple visits, I've found the signature oversized biscotti are chalky and flavorless, the muffins are also dry. The seating and repurposed log tables are uncomfortable and make conversation difficult. And the interior (shiny mosaics, multi-tone orange paint, faux Spanish title ceiling, heavily lacquered wood beams) has a lot going on. Given that Common Ground is opening a second location in Hamden, maybe they will be willing to mix up their food & design, particularly given the excellent pastries available at both Cantean and Best Video. read more

The cappuccino quality changed. The milk was boiling, and therefore their cappuccino are way too hot. It takes a long time to cool off. In addition, they started using disposable cups, which ruins the experience when going there to enjoy sitting and savoring the coffee with one of their great pastries . read more

Third time at this location not sure if ownership changed within last few years. Music was too loud and not coffee house vibe, bathroom was unkept. Our coffee's tasted burnt. The owner of this establishment is unkind to its patrons. I was in one afternoon doing a lot of work, and I immediately had to hop onto a meeting when I arrived at the coffee shop. About a hour or so later, my sister joined me to also do work, and she ordered a large iced coffee. Shortly thereafter, the owner approaches me and rudely asks if I wanted something to eat or drink. I was confused, not realizing it was the owner at first, until he started YELLING AT ME it is their store policy to eat/drink something while you are there. Had he explained this in a polite way and encouraged me to order something, I gladly would have. His verbose tone and treatment of female customers nonetheless was absolutely disgusting. Even worse, he has young girls working for him, and I feel sorry if he speaks to them in that manner. I will never be back again. read more

People have consistently said Common Grounds is amazing, I gave it my first try and it was definitely my last try as well. The service was fine, the ambiance was fine. The actual food and drink were among the worst I can remember having. I got an iced chai latte that comes in a giant pre-mixed bottle, so no option on what type of milk. I believe the mix was oat milk, which was a gross surprise. The drink was so sweet it hurt my teeth. I took one sip and threw it out. Purchased a chocolate chip cookie for later and the bag immediately started absorbing the greasiness of the cookie. When we tried it, it was awful. The butter they used tasted like it had sat in a fridge and absorbed the fridge flavors. One bite and I chucked it. I did have a muffin that was edible, it had the same butter flavor issue as the cookie. Ate half because I was starving, the other half was thrown away. Overall, so disappointing to waste money but more importantly to throw out this much food. Do not recommend, will not go back. read more

I walked in and I wasn't sure what I wanted to drink. It was a warm day so I knew I didn't want coffee. Much to my dismay, the menu posted on the wall doesn't have a single price for any of the items they sell. So I proceed to ask for the prices for the few drinks that might interest me. The lady working the register doesn't speak English very well. I apologize as I understand this is a difficult and somewhat annoying order as the prices aren't clear. I made my order and began engaging her in conversation while she made my drink. Now I understand that America is a melting pot, and that learning English isn't a requirement to work in America. But it was incredibly annoying when she cuts me off mid sentence to say "I'm done talking English no more". This is absolutely appalling for any company regardless of country to tell your customer who is politely engaging in a customer service setting. Shame on this company for hiring people who don't want to provide customer service or even attempt to learn the language. You will never see another penny from me. read more

If you do anything, come for the biscotti. There are endless glass jars of different varieties. Anything dipped in chocolate is worthy (though this probably just my bias). The biscotti I've tried has a perfect consistency. The coffee menu has some really unique concoctions, especially if you want something fancier than a normal latte. I went for a cappuccino, and it was perfectly made. Biggest problem this spot has is that it's too popular! I can see why people want to snag a seat and stay a while. read more

Wow what a hidden gem and this place is less than 5 minutes from my house. The medium here is basically a Starbucks venti and the coffee taste is super smooth and great. I really wish they did latte art here but that's more of a personal preference. The interior vibe has what I assume a very Central American vibe, heavily into it. Seating however inside is limited, area is clean but cluttered with sacks of coffee beans. Not sure if that's supposed to be part of the interior theme or if it's storage sitting outside. I'm thinking this is going to be my new favorite spot for coffee in the tea. They offer a little everything. Teas, cappuccinos, espressos,Macchiatos, smoothies, Italian and French soda. A Hy thing you're craving is here. They also seem to sell whole and ground beans. Food wise there's a wide range of muffins, cakes,fresh fruit, parfaits,giant cookies, 8 different kinds of biscotti, and even some empanadas. The two women working behind the counter are very friendly, accommodating, and work fast. We've been in here for a 1/2 hour and there's been a steady flow of customers. They also have an outside area to enjoy your drink of choice outside. We tried the chai and frozen cappuccino and were not disappointed. We also loved the raspberry crumb cake and yogurt parfait. The chicken empanadas were a little dry but still pretty good. We'll definitely be back. I'll have to come back to try one of those giant cookies with my next coffee! read more

I don't review much, but when something stands out as much as this did, it's a must. First off... The coffee is delicious. The roast everything in house, and have a decent selection of beans. They make very good coffee drinks as well, and have both oat and almond milk. Secondly, the muffins in the case are absolutely delicious. We were in town for only two days, and this was our "coffee place" for this stay. Both days we split two muffins, and all four of them were awesome. However, the star of the show was the customer service. Both days there were two women working, each were nicer than the next. So absolutely pleasant and helpful, and genuinely happy to see customers. Thanks for a great experience! read more

Full on impressed with this joint. The decaf chocolate marshmallow was amazeballs. Like I've never had decaf and did my happy shoulder dance, I despise decaf. But this - this was my coffee foodie happy dance girl. Phenomenal customer service, so many amazing options, well laid out menu, *drooling* over foodie options on counter and in window counter, ambiance on point, super clean seating areas and clean cream/sugar station. So yes go get coffee here, no brainer. However, I'm holding back my coveted 5 stars for one reason. Bathroom needed TLC. This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Hamden. The decor is so quaint. Huge tree trunk coffee tables which you can't move by yourself. I've tried. Just move the chairs. Coffee roasted on premises. So many flavors and special coffees daily. I love a coconut latte and hot chocolate is great. The chai latte is very tasty but the customer service will keep you coming back. There are several treats biscotti and cannolis. I just go for the fantastic coffee. I love getting half regular (house blend) and half French blend. The coffee is nice and strong, and the counter help is very nice each time I have gone. I also love that they feature a "dump cup". Truly, Common Grounds has given me the pleasure of drinking true espresso that has been made with quality beans. I got the cappuccino and personally I would definitely go back there and get it again. The milk was steamed perfectly, leaving a creamy frothy mouthfeel while not being under or over frothed to the point where it was too mellow and soft or burnt and roasted. As a coffee lover and as someone who visits lots of different cafés, this is one of the rare ones that I would give five stars. I recommend you go there if you drink coffee.
