Went to Communal for a Saturday morning brunch. I called ahead and they made a reservation for me 20 min from my call and when I arrived I was immediately seated. Note that they don't do brunch on weekdays! We ordered the scones and the chicken and waffles. Both were INCREDIBLE. the scones came with 1000x more than I was expecting and paired with the best honey butter was a treat. The chicken and biscuits were so cute and had the most delicious sauce on it - not spicy at all but great flavor. The chicken was perfect had had delicious flakiness to it. Where do I begin, my husband and I tried so many delicious dishes.. First off, I suggest sharing-the portions are generous which gives you an opportunity to try multiple items from the menu. We started with the creamy and slightly sweet butternut squash soup, I liked the pumpkin seeds for texture. Charcuterie plate: multiple salamis, espresso and tartufo (truffle) cheese, mustard, local honey, house toasted pecans , olives and multiple mini toasts to build your perfect bite! Hangar steak (medium) with Chimichurri, pickled peppers and roasted scallions which I found a little on the sweet side. Also, this meat has lots of marbling which adds to the richness. Sautéed Polenta with a crispy crust served on a creamy green sauce of (jalapeño and scallion) it wasn't too spicy though. Broccolini which I found a little dry and fibrous (not our favorite) The ultimate was the dessert- the butterscotch pudding is now on my list of most memorable sweet meal endings. Major sugar rush from the velvety, ice cold butterscotch pudding with layers of crumbled Oreos topped with slightly sweet whipped cream! Generous portion, plenty for a couple. We really enjoyed this place as a little anniversary dinner. The view was so fun with the open windows giving you views of downtown. I got chicken and dumplings and my husband got the steak. The steak was a little fatty and hard to eat but everything else was great including the service which we really appreciated. Definitely will be coming back to try the breakfast! read more

Is it possible that I have never reviewed Communal? It simply must be that every time we have dined there, they took us to cloud 9 where there was not enough reception to leave a glowing review. Communal is easiest our favorite place for a meal in Utah County. That could be brunch, lunch, dinner, or just dessert. We LOVE Communal. The atmosphere is always pleasant with the best of service and employees that make you feel like you are dear family. This farm-to-table sources from the best of what Utah has to offer. Now I have to admit that even though the dished are family-style, we always order more than we should. This is simply because we cannot resist. Their salads are inventive, refreshing, and the highest of quality. The side dishes are well proportioned and are probably where we over-order (yet somehow the service dished end up completely cleared and no to-go boxes are ever requested). We have tried just about everything on the menu and have NEVER been disappointed. It is the highest of quality, well cooked, and never over seasoned. I actually dream about their brunch items and no matter how full we are, dessert is ALWAYS ordered. Seriously, you go ahead and try to resist their butterscotch pudding. You are going to love it. Chef Adam & Communal do it again. Since they're closed on Christmas Eve my family and I decided to come here on the 23rd to celebrate. I always always wish I had two stomachs because the menu is always full of so many good things. Tonight we decided on the funeral potatoes croquette, broccolini, hanger steak with chimichurri, mushroom angolotti pasta and chai pot de creme dessert with ginger snaps and wow. I am a happy girl with a very full stomach. It was a balanced and delicious meal. Dare I say the broccolini was my favorite? Only because I was blown away - never had broccoli taste so amazing in my life. This place has yet to disappoint. I hope that day never comes!! The food was really something special, and the server was so knowledgeable and kind. My wife rarely enjoys eating out, so the fact that she liked the food here is a ringing endorsement. They have really creative menu options and the fact that the menu is a la carte and meant to be shared means you get a lot of variety in your meal without having to pay lots of money or end up with tons of leftovers. Cozy restaurant with a simple menu full of deliciousness. I took a lovely scenic drive from Salt Lake City to Provo. When I entered Provo I searched for restaurants and this one popped up. From the outside the restaurant appears closed. Dark curtains block out the late day sun. Upon entering I was greeted immediately and sat at the bar overlooking the small kitchen. The food is pricy - each item is ordered separately. $33 for trout, $13 for squash. I think $50+ for a steak - But it was well worth it. I was offered two crisp dinner rolls and butter - a great start after a full day of travel. I enjoyed the bread while reviewing the menu and watching the chef and soups chef at work. Though the pasta was recommended I could tell the trout and steak were being cooked perfectly. I started my meal with pork belly and grilled peaches. Crispy and slightly tart mix topped with a citrus oil. Yum. Next I had the trout - pan fried and served with a mild harissa - and a fascinating condensed cucumber topping that I can't wait to make at home. I had squash to accompany the trout. Grilled and topped with crushed walnuts and basil leaves - unique combination that worked exceptionally well with the trout. Completely full I opted for a dessert to go which I am nibbling on now. Carrot cake with mascarpone cheese icing and a pineapple compote layer. Great way to start a short trip in Utah. Only thing I might suggest to the staff - take away the initial plate. Such a great experience at Communal. We were celebrating a college graduation, and unexpectedly were seated in a private area. It made it all extra special. Our server attended to us quickly and efficiently also giving us great recommendations. The food was absolutely delicious. We all had something different and tried many things - which was perfect. The food is great here! Be mindful of the top of the menu where it shows that each item is big enough to be shared (about two servings per item, unless you're a hungry bear). The waiter was very helpful, polite and knowledgeable on the menu, and his recommendations were also detailed. He also explained that there are some items on the menu that change every few months, so we will be looking in a few months to see if there is something else on there that we would like to try. The only reason I'm knocking it down a star is because as soon as you come in, there are t any signs or anyone there to direct you on seating or to check you in for your reservation. It wasn't until we moved further into the restaurant, past some dining tables, that someone asked us for our reservation before seating us. read more

Decided to pop in while on a business trip in Provo... Right as they were opening up at 5 PM... I ended up sitting at the stone bar overlooking the kitchen, which was kind of cool... I ordered the pork shank and grill, zucchini... And I think it was pretty awesome, but my only gripe is that the pork shank was not at the temperature I would have one hour... Communal is very tasty, but the kitchen is slow and the service is not attentive. I've been here twice in the past month for work lunches, and we always have to track down the single waiter to come take our order and bring our check. It usually takes at least half an hour between ordering and getting food. The food is good enough that we'll probably go back, but the service has been disappointing. Came here on a Monday. They were out of coffee and ice? Also, I believe the ice machine was broken so they weren't able to serve cold drinks. The dining area wasn't clean and many tables were left dirty from previous patrons. Only two people, the chef and the waiter. I will say this, our waiter was respectful and pleasant to work with. He did a good job. It's not his job to make sure there is enough coffee and ice to be open for business on a Monday. The owners need to give attention to this place. As annoying as it was to wait way too long for our food and warm drinks, when the food arrived it was DELICIOUS. The building is old, and the restaurant isn't large, so while others complain about that, look where you're eating. Downtown Provo . This isn't Hell's Kitchen. The food, ambiance & service here is FANTASTIC If you live in Salt Lake this is actually worth the drive. It's a Small Boutique Restaurant with a beautiful Interior Design and our server Kathleen really made us feel at home.   Chef Matt Eckelmann even came over and talked to us. He is really nice and his dishes are as delicious as they are aesthetically pleasing. He only uses fresh products from local farm suppliers which I appreciate. Some of the menu changes seasonally. We started with *Popovers with apricot butter | $10 Sooooo worth it !  They had a crisp, golden-brown exterior and warm moist butter inside . * burrata toast | $10  it was so creamy w/ pomegranate, rosemary and honey it was truly heaven. & we had to have mimosas with brunch lol . All the plates are shareable & That's what we did. *  Brioche French Toast it had mixed berries , & yummy buttermilk syrup. The syrup is beyond words ‍‍‍ * Roasted Root vegetable hash with 2 eggs . The seasonings and sauce it was made in was a beautiful experience for my taste buds. * Prosciutto Benedict  Mmmmmm Mmmmmm the hollandaise sauce was made to perfection and I love arugula. * Steak Chilaquiles This is definitely shareable, it's Huge. Where to start? It's a stylish upscale place with a bit of a hipster vibe in downtown Provo with an open kitchen. The grammar here is goofed up, but ima leave it as is. The seating is a bit tight, so know that going in. Things started out great but went downhill. Let me put it this way, we came very close to asking for the check before the entrees finally came out. I made a reservation for the two of us well in advance, and we were seated promptly at a nice window two-top table. So far so, so good. For appetizers, we ordered the roasted beet and citrus salad ($13) and the barley risotto ($9). Both were generously portioned. The barley risotto is a side dish on the menu, but chose to order it as an appetizer figuring it would also serve as a side to accompany the entrees. Both were quite good. So far so good. For entrees, I ordered the grilled hanger steak ($30), and she ordered the spring lake trout ($30). The entrees were the downfall of the evening. It took far too long in my estimation for the entrees to come out. It seemed to me the grilled hangar steak had been sitting, and it was not nearly as hot as one would expect (almost cold). Halfway through it, it was cold. I found it to be over seasoned also. I knew better than to complain or send it back, so I ate it anyway so we could simply finish the meal and move on with our night. In my experience, almost anywhere you go sending something back seldom if ever works well, especially if the place is busy, which it was. The service was exemplary except when it came to the entrees. My suspicion is our server and the other wait staff were at that point focused primarily on a large party (large check and one would assume a commensurately large tip) versus our little two-top. About half way through the entrees, I signaled we wanted to wrap it up by placing my card on the table. I tipped a little more than the customary 20% for the sake of round numbers. I found the prices to be reasonable, so I have no gripes about that. Setting upon an appropriate rating for our meal was as bit of a challenge. I try to be fair and settled on three stars taking into account the mostly quite good and the bad. Would I return? Likely not. "OK" doesn't do it for me. So there you go. Communal is a special occasion restaurant for us. We generally go once a year for our wedding anniversary and it has never disappointed. We always end our evening sharing the butterscotch pudding. Sooo good! This year we were out of town in August so we went for my birthday in September as a group of 6. Once again flavorful, delicious food. No one was disappointed. Communal is a disgrace to the restaurant industry - especially when it claims to be a fine dining location. Our party of four was seated at a table with mismatched dishes, glasses and cutlery - a precursor of bad things to come. We ordered appetizers, entrees, side dishes and dessert. Part of Communal's schtick is that their overpriced entrees can be shared - not even remotely true. We were served lukewarm entrees clearly sized for one person. The service was agonizingly slow. We were still eating dessert when the manager approached and asked us to leave because he had another party waiting for our table. He was rude, arrogant and condescending. We had been seated for one hour and fifteen minutes and were still eating at the time. What was supposed to be an anniversary celebration turned into our worst dining experience ever. Food is poor quality and overpriced, the restaurant is filthy, and the manager belongs in another line of work. Please, save your money and avoid Communal! read more

I'm going to go ahead and five communal a 5-star review. The food was teetering between 4 and 5 stars but the service and ambiance put this over the top. We went for a farewell party for a dear friend so we made sure to try pretty much everything on the menu. I should start by saying that our server was phenomenal. I honestly can't remember his name, but we were all impressed. He knew the menu super well, and gave us great service! As far as the food goes let's start with the highlights. And don't all highlights start with dessert? The Amano chocolate mouse cup was truly phenomenal. I haven't had something that good for dessert in a long time. Had some salt flakes in it too. Wow. Butterscotch pudding was also great. The tart was good but nothing outrageous. Main courses: pork loin was really good. Chicken was alright. Appetizers: grilled peaches, yessir! Homemade bread and butter, yup! Brussel sprouts. Top notch. Also, communal has this cool back room that you can either rent or get seated at depending on your party size. Hmmmmm. I'm struggling to put my finger on what the experience really was. The food was unique. And yes it was good. But I think I was taken back by the family style service but when you get served a 1/2 chicken family style trying to divide and cut it is next to impossible without burning one's fingers and touching everyone else's meat. The veggies were not your ordinary usual suspects your grandma serves. I won't spoil the surprise but just know they tasted tasty...and spicy...just like the meat. The service had a proper amount of pompis attitude. It made me feel exclusive like not everyone in Provo could be dining there tonight kind of vibe. The decore was simple as well it should be. Let the food speak for itself. My only complaint was the portions. I think everyone left just this side of full. Which is ok. No one needs to go to bed like a 1/2 stuffed chicken. read more

What an enjoyable dining experience! Walking into the restaurant you feel like you're at an exclusive place since there aren't too many seating options. All the tables surround a small kitchen in the heart of the restaurant, which does an exquisite job of staying quiet and discreet. There's a cool vibe that comes from being next to the kitchen and also being surrounded by original artwork on the walls. The menu felt totally intriguing with seasonal, local, and fresh ingredients. All portions are meant for sharing, which means you can try sides and appetizers to get a well rounded meal and try many of their offerings together. My husband and I came for our 5th anniversary dinner and we loved it! We started with a fresh lime soda with mint and felt like it was light, refreshing and flavorful. We also got a hibiscus lemonade which had a big punch of flavor, but was surprisingly refreshing and sweet without being overbearingly floral. We then got a charcuterie board with local cheeses, meats, honey, homemade mustard, pickles, toasted bread and olives. The flavors were all so well paired together. All our tastebuds were intrigued with every bite! We especially loved the aged cheese with espresso and lavender. Instead of getting a starch with our meal, we got the grilled peaches. You start out impressed with how lovely they look on the plate! At first I was a bit worried about the peaches because they were quite crunchy, but with my first bite all my worries melted away. What an experience in your mouth! The grilled peaches went so well with the creamy whipped burrata cheese and the tangy balsamic reduction which wasn't overpowering. The nutty bite of pistachios competed the dish. This was probably our favorite dish of the night. Next we had the homemade pasta with wild mushrooms for our main course. It was delicious and cooked to perfection, though I will say it didn't pack quite as big of a flavor punch or have as much intrigue as the other dishes we tried. Since it was our anniversary they offered us a dessert for free. How nice! We chose the butterscotch pudding with Oreos and whipped cream. It was delicious! It mainly tasted like salty caramel (which I love) and the Oreos helped break up the creamy texture. Overall we had a delightful experience dining here and we would love to come back in other seasons to try new offerings and take our taste buds on another adventure through this insightful cuisine. read more

Amazing food and experience. I loved the ribeye, very unique flavor and world class texture. When I saw the chef pulling one out of the broiler simmering enticingly, I knew what I wanted to order.
