Had lunch with a few colleagues at Black Sheep Café while in Provo. We stopped in on a Saturday around 12:30 PM. The restaurant was fairly busy, and despite not having reservations, we were seated immediately. I started with the Yanabah iced tea ($5), a Navajo herbal tea. It was light, refreshing, and not overly herbal. We shared a wedge salad to start, which came with a chipotle mayo dressing that was excellent. It had more heat than the chipotle flavors I am typically used to, and I really enjoyed the extra kick. For my entrée, I ordered the Navajo taco with BBQ pork ($15)? which was outstanding. The taco is served on freshly made fry bread that was fluffy, slightly sweet, and had subtle honey notes. It was piled with a generous portion of perfectly cooked pulled pork coated in a sweet glaze, along with some fresh vegetables and herbs that added both crunch and more flavor, with chipotle sauce on the side. The fry bread was fresh and flavorful, the pork was tender, and the combination of herbs, vegetables, and sauce created a great balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Black Sheep Café offers a unique menu inspired by Native American and Southwestern flavors, and I wish I had more time to come back and try more of the menu. This is an amazing place for dinner: and here's why. 1. The servers & host were prompt and courteous. 2. The chefs worked fast. For delicious foods, you'd expect it to take more time; but, at this restaurant, the chefs were able to make delicious foods in, probably, 30-40% less time. Bravo! 3. Pricing is reasonable. The chips it's served with are thicker and sturdy! (No breaking in the dip) I got the Red Chili Beef Taco- it's a stewed beef on their fry bread (which was very good). It was tasty. Not much heat, so if you like spicy that's not your plate! But over all good portion and great flavor. The beans are bland, so that was a slight disappointment. I tried to cater this for a private event but after 10+ business days of trying I went with another company. The contact information on BYU's website is outdated and when they connected me with the proper person they responded so sporadically. After quickly responding to their messages they stopped responding and a week later replied. Me and my colleagues did stop by for lunch because I did want to enjoy a local business and try that lavender honey flatbread. It was good. Wow! This was my first time having Native American food, and this is an experience I will never forget. Black Sheep Cafe has a fair share of regulars and new customers (from what I could overhear). I made a reservation through Yelp, arrived early and was able to be sat early. I found street parking easily out front on a Wednesday night. The frybread?? So good, I had to have it for appetizer and dessert. Think of a roll that is super light and fluffy, more on the croissant side but not flaky... This is my mother-in-law's favorite restaurant so we go here for a lot of birthdays. The food is always really good, and the staff is very nice. It is a little smaller of a dining room, which makes it a very intimate setting. Their Navajo and Joel tacos are everyone's go to dishes, they are really good. I did try the green chili soup last time and it was Rich and Hardy With slow cooked meat. That was really flavorful. They have a bunch of staples that I think they do really well, we were sad to find out that they don't do their mousse anymore, unless you are catering an event. read more

I paid nearly $100 for two people which was disappointing given the small portions that are not very filling. Roadtripping through Utah and saw the Black Sheep Cafe on Yelp. They had me at Navajo Tacos and then I saw Lavender honey fry bread and told my husband I know exactly where were are eating. We got there and our server was phenomenal. He was native and he and my husband hit it off about the jewelry they each had on. We ordered the Navajo Tacos, Green Chili pork taco and two Mexican cokes. My husband absolutely devoured his green chili taco. I like my Navajo taco but thought the beans needed salt and I needed more lettuce and salsa ( less beans too). For dessert we had (ok I mean I had) the Lavender taco. Typically, people don't like to be referred to as the "black sheep," so I would have thought this would extend to restaurants. However, Black Sheep Cafe is as far from the societal reject that this name might insinuate. My sister and I visited to celebrate my birthday and had an exquisite time. The food was terrific-mad props to the Black Sheep Salad with an addition of chicken...yum! We paired it with an order of fry bread, which mostly negated the healthy choices we made with salads. Lavender bread was awesome! I could eat it every day! The filet bruschetta was super good. The mash potatoes at the base snuck up on us, you almost don't notice until you notice them you want more! My dad and I came here after a day hike and wanted to try something downtown. The inside is cute and gives a very family owned feel. The bathrooms are quite far and require a code as the building is in a leases strip mall area of downtown. The place was packed, which is a good sign and we got sat fairly quickly. They have a student of Chihuly's glass as art, which is a great addition for Seattle folks like us! We had wonderful service and our table looked out over the street. For dinner I had the meatloaf special in a yummy sweet vinegar type sauce. The meatloaf was flakey with carrot, which I thought was super yummy and the portion was huge. I also really enjoyed the vegetable medley because it had edamame. It was super good in the sauce. My dad had a salad with chicken. The salad was HUGE and they gave a generous portion of chicken. We had reservations on a Friday evening, but they put us in the corner table right next to the entrance, hot lights are directly shining on your face - super hot area and their A/C was not working either so the temperature inside the restaurant was uncomfortable. Appetizers were probably BETTER than their actual entrees. Do NOT get the hanger steak , it had some balsamic/sweet glaze on it (which does go well with a steak in general in my opinion) and the steak was overdone; it tasted like a 2 day old pot roast. Waitress was accommodating and offered to get it redone or get me something else, which I opted for the wedge salad . Wedge salad's dressing tasted like fry sauce , which was also strange! Service was wonderful - the staff was kind and very accommodating for me & my service dog. The food was ok - I got the Traditional Black Sheep Navajo Tacos (vegetarian option). I loved the toppings, the beans were incredibly flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread, it reminded me of an Elephant Ear you would get at the fair.
