Navajo Taco - Tres Tapas Sampler
    Brent O.

This is such a warm place, with delightful service. Was looking for something unique and we got it. The fry bread, the nachos, the tacos, all amazing. They are definitely not what you may be used to if you're thinking Mexican style, because this is not that. You can go and feel the care put into everything from the service to the food.

Black Sheep Café feels like the kind of place Provo is lucky to have: artsy without trying too hard, cozy without feeling cramped, genuinely designed for conversation. It's an excellent date spot, but it passed the solo lunch test just as beautifully. My server Hannah struck that increasingly rare balance of attentive without hovering, and the whole operation felt thoughtfully run -- tables cleared promptly, food arriving without delay, the rhythm of a place that knows what it's doing. The cactus-pear lemonade arrived first: bright, refreshing, just unusual enough to feel memorable without tipping into novelty. I ordered the green chili Navajo taco. The fry bread earned its reputation immediately -- crisp, golden, flavorful enough to stand alone. Unfortunately, once buried under the toppings, it surrendered its structural integrity within a few bites. The culinary equivalent of a beautiful canoe taking on water. The green chili pork itself leaned mild where it could have been bold, and required some tactical excavation around fatty bits that the kitchen might consider trimming more carefully. The ingredients tasted fresh throughout, which made the seasoning restraint feel more noticeable than intentional. Dessert redeemed the landing. The lavender blueberry cake was unexpectedly excellent: moist despite its cornbread-adjacent texture, dense yet somehow light in flavor, restrained in sweetness in the best possible way. A dessert that trusts itself. Black Sheep isn't a constant-craving restaurant. It's the kind of place you return to because the menu is genuinely interesting and the atmosphere earns your time. I'll be back to work through more of that menu.

Wow! This was my first time having Native American food, and this is an experience I will never forget. Black Sheep Cafe has a fair share of regulars and new customers (from what I could overhear). I made a reservation through Yelp, arrived early and was able to be sat early. I found street parking easily out front on a Wednesday night. The frybread?? So good, I had to have it for appetizer and dessert. Think of a roll that is super light and fluffy, more on the croissant side but not flaky... Not the best description at all so u suggest you try it yourself. The hog jowl tacos were amazing. Hog jowl was described to me as a sweet pork. The meat reminded me so much of bacon; it was delicious and I regret not getting 2 orders. Between the tasty food and good service, this is a place I would visit again when in town.

This is a nicer restaurant in the Provo area and a great place to come with coworkers or friends & family! The navajo tacos are yummy (I just wish mine was fried a bit more for more crunch!) Overall it was very filling and loaded! The pork jowl nachos were especially yummy! Definitely come here if you're looking for a nice sit-down restaurant. The service was fairly quick and friendly too.

This was a really enjoyable stop. Let's start with the wonderful service by David. He was on task and it was appreciated. The ambiance was clean and simple. The food was good. I had the chumichunga, which was enjoyable. The green chili was Anaheim, so avoided. If it's not Hatch, it's weak.

I made reservations to eat at their 11:30 AM opening. We arrived and had a table waiting in the front window. Friendly hostess and waitress. The decor was beautiful and looked to be native. I ordered the Black Sheep Navajo taco and my son ordered the Red Chili Beef Navajo taco. We shared a street corn. My son had the cactus pear lemonade and I had the Navajo iced tea to drink. Everything was delicious and fresh! The dough was soft and tasty. We really enjoyed our meal!

Not sure why I was surprised but I was. Pork jowl tacos are unique and top tier. The service was fast per the type of quality of food available. Everything extremely fresh with a lot of activity in the kitchen. The menu isn't vast but everything looks amazing. I also had the frites green chile to start and too much for one person but great appetizer if hungry.

Typically, people don't like to be referred to as the "black sheep," so I would have thought this would extend to restaurants. However, Black Sheep Cafe is as far from the societal reject that this name might insinuate. My sister and I visited to celebrate my birthday and had an exquisite time. The food was terrific-mad props to the Black Sheep Salad with an addition of chicken...yum! We paired it with an order of fry bread, which mostly negated the healthy choices we made with salads. Oh well. I've never had fry bread like it-both sweet and savory at the same time. Sooo good! I also ordered the pear lemonade-it was hot day and I was in the mood for a cool refresher. It was just what I hoped for-beware it's pretty sweet. Consider me part of the flock-I'll be baaaaack.

Lavender bread was awesome! I could eat it every day! The filet bruschetta was super good. The mash potatoes at the base snuck up on us, you almost don't notice until you notice them you want more! I got the fried chicken. Super filling and tasty, great crisp on the chicken and the gravy is bomb! The potatoes are nice and cheesy. So good! Overall, I will be back for sure.

My dad and I came here after a day hike and wanted to try something downtown. The inside is cute and gives a very family owned feel. The bathrooms are quite far and require a code as the building is in a leases strip mall area of downtown. The place was packed, which is a good sign and we got sat fairly quickly. They have a student of Chihuly's glass as art, which is a great addition for Seattle folks like us! We had wonderful service and our table looked out over the street. For dinner I had the meatloaf special in a yummy sweet vinegar type sauce. The meatloaf was flakey with carrot, which I thought was super yummy and the portion was huge. I also really enjoyed the vegetable medley because it had edamame. It was super good in the sauce. My dad had a salad with chicken. The salad was HUGE and they gave a generous portion of chicken. I also had a glass of their prickly pear lemonade with vodka that was refreshing with their local vodka. Highly recommend and would def come back on my next visit!!

Great food and excellent, friendly service. A friend of ours recommended this cafe to us, after looking at their menu online I couldn't wait to check it out. I was torn between the green chile stew and the pozole. The server said both were great but the stew had more veggies, I ordered the green chile stew with a side of fry bread & honey- it was very yummy! Would order again. Hubby got the hanger steak, said it was tasty and he would order again. I also ordered the prickly cactus marg- it was different and tasty. Quaint place, we went for dinner, we were seated right away and didn't have to wait long at all for our food. Can't wait to return.

Heard good things about this place! We had reservations on a Friday evening, but they put us in the corner table right next to the entrance, hot lights are directly shining on your face - super hot area and their A/C was not working either so the temperature inside the restaurant was uncomfortable. Appetizers were probably BETTER than their actual entrees. Do NOT get the hanger steak , it had some balsamic/sweet glaze on it (which does go well with a steak in general in my opinion) and the steak was overdone; it tasted like a 2 day old pot roast. Waitress was accommodating and offered to get it redone or get me something else, which I opted for the wedge salad . Wedge salad's dressing tasted like fry sauce , which was also strange! We would only probably come back for the appetizers next time.

We were there for a BYU game and the food was pretty tasty, however the service was very slow. I will say they were extremely busy so I'm not sure what it's like in a regular day. We had the filet mignon bruschetta and green chili stew. So good! The ambiance was nice and we loved that this is Native American inspired food. Something different!

This place has gone downhill. It used to be so good. They changed the recipe for the green chili stew. Now it sucks. So sad.

I'd say like a 2.5/5 Gringas pastor- 4/5 I wished there was more pineapple I felt like it paired well with the meat. For there being cheese on top I expected it to be a little crispy but it wasn't. So maybe I'll try that next time. Esquites - 5/5 it was delicious. All the sauces they had though were delicious so anything you paired it with tasted a little better. Overall this place I liked.
