Came to Communal on a beautiful Friday morning and it was the perfect place to sit outside and enjoy a cool drink in the nice weather. I had been to their other locations before, but this was my first time at their South Park spot. I loved their patio seating! There was lots of space and very dog friendly. They make the drinks out of a cute coffee cart and they have a pretty elaborate menu. They had an espresso tonic that had orange syrup in it, so I asked to just get that orange syrup added in a latte and it was no problem. The flavor was so good! It had the perfect balance of sweetness and added a hint of fruitiness to my latte. The drinks were ready fast and while I didn't try it, I heard someone say they had the best breakfast sandwich of their life here so I'll have to come back lol. read more

Worst matcha ever. Don't let the aesthetic fool you. Visiting SD for the week decided to try it with my mother in law. For one, the big guy with glasses I believe was so mean and blunt. For a business like this you NEED to be kind & build a connection with ALL clients. Old & new. He called out an order and I thought it was mine, and when i grabes it he got it out of my hands and said "Not yours." In Spanish!!!! I kinda laughed to make it less awkward but then he looked at me with a serious face making me feel so uncomfy. 3, we asked him if he had any bakery items & he said NO. Communal South Park is an oasis of peace and joy, with little birds and butterflies coming in and an adorable gift shop with the usual candles, cards, and many more adorabilia, if that could be a word. My husband and I were on a mini Saturday coffee crawl in South Park, and decided to come by Communal because we have one up where we live and we were craving something familiar. Got a regular iced vanilla latte, and I'd say it was an 8.5 out of 10. I love the little patio here where you can sit and enjoy your coffee, there's also some seating inside their small gift shop area, which was nice to peruse. Overall, the experience was pretty much what we expected, which was good. The service wasn't overly friendly, but not a deal breaker. Stopped by this weekend and had a really pleasant experience! The staff was super friendly, and the space is bright, open, and inviting--perfect for a relaxed weekend coffee run. I tried the cold brew and the salmon bagel. The bagel was nicely toasted and flavorful; if anything, I might add a little lemon, but it was still delightful. And if you like coffee with cream, the cream is right on the table, so you can add as much as you like. But the toast with smoked salmon, radish, avocado, and crunchy bread was absolutely delicious! I first heard about this place upon eavesdropping a "couple" on their first date at another San Diegan cafe. He said it was the "best" coffee in the area, so I had to check it out before my flight out of SD. Communal's cafe is mostly outdoor, with a lot of parasols covering you from the hot Socal sun. I got the Sweet Mint Cold Brew, which reminds me a lot of Philz's mint mojito. It's 100% a much better version of it. It has a bit more kick and bite to it, but you still feel cool and refreshed from the minty aftertaste. I couldn't really tell if it was real cold brew, but it tasted good to me! It did not taste acidic to me, but it might have been the milk :O I like the fun hippie van as their barista bar. It just lends so much to the aesthetic. Oh, and there's water on the side. and everything here felt really clean. 10/10 would go again! read more

Coffee great, service was not so great. I ordered a Golden Coast coffee, the coffee was so delicious! I brought my dog and noticed it was dog friendly because there was a water bowl, dog treats, and plenty of outdoor seating. The flooring outdoors was cute. I visited on Friday morning and the lady making coffee that time did not greet me. I was the only customer there and I had to say hi first, to place an order. I felt invisible as a customer which felt awkward. Even while ordering and picking up my coffee, the barista had a bit of a cold attitude. I love Communal coffee so I suggest other locations, maybe not this one. read more

I ordered the Dark Chocolate cherry latte and I've never had anything like it before and it was delicious. My wife had the lavender latte and loved it as well. The barista was helpful and nice. This place is pretty nasty. I've been here and their other location (30th) a few times and I have nothing good to say. For starters, caught a glimpse of one of the syrup bottles left on the counter and you can literally see spots of black mold in them. Which is pretty insane if you think about it. They're literally pouring contaminated syrup into the coffees. I've seen this multiple times over my stops in so it's clearly not a one time thing. The other thing is the service. The regular baristas are usually pretty friendly, but the manager (bri I think) has a horrible attitude. Extremely demeaning towards staff and extremely rude to the customers. I've seen her talk to her staff and customers like they're children. She seems like she'd rather be anywhere else. Not cool, especially when the minimum wage staff is significantly chiller than her. Overall, won't be giving my money to them anymore. read more

First time at this location, probably wont come back. After a 6 hour drive I was craving the smoked salmon bagel I usually get. What I got was nothing like the bagel I used to get - the bagel was barely toasted, the cream cheese was plain when its advertised as 'herbed' and there was an inch of cream cheese on each side (not a complaint but more than my liking). I had one sliver of pickled onion - I think they added a handful of capers to make up for it (which are not listed as an ingredient, and I am not fond of). No complaints about the latte. I didnt check until I got home, so partially my fault. But, I think a heads up asking if substitutions were ok if they were out of an ingredient would have been nice.
