I've attended some amazing lectures at ABW, from Jim Canary ('keeper' of Jack Kerouac's scroll) to experts discussing ancient manuscripts from the Ransom Archive. Started in 1984 by binders, conservators, printers, members of the Guild of Book Workers. The Annual Book Arts Fair introduced many an Austin child to paste paper, letterpress printing, typography, calligraphy, marbled paper, folded signatures, sewn pages, and book binding. Membership is open to anyone wanting to build a book from scratch, re-bind an old book, learn new tricks or hang out with other professionals, amateurs, crafters and self publishers, book lovers all. They ought to raise their membership from $12 a year, or at least have a meeting fee. But they don't.

And, every week, I leave my school with a big grin on my face, and restored faith in humanity. If only we could all be like second graders! The APIE folks make it EASY to volunteer. They give you, and each child, a workbook full of stories and activities for each week, so no planning is required. And, you're not ever alone - a program coordinator is there each week, along with six or so other volunteers. They've also got the timing down pat - you volunteer for exactly 45 minutes per week, making it possible for me to drive down from work, volunteer, and drive back in a single lunch hour. My collection has dwindled over the years through breakage. So I was thrifting looking for pink depression glass. The Burnet Road location is large, well organized with two-stories of items. It is filled with just about anything that you can imagine. Clothing...they have it! Shoes...they have it! Vintage items...they have it! Kitchen and house wears...they have it! Unfortunately, no pink depression glass. I will definitely return to thrift here due to their large selection of things. In addition, their prices are very reasonable. First stop Austin Pets Alive! - Burnet. I learned that all net sale proceeds go directly to support Austin Pets Alive!'s lifesaving programs for animals most at risk. Their clear mission is saving animals' lives, which is so heartwarming. According to staff, Austin Pets Alive! is known for pioneering innovative programs that help keep pets out of euthanasia and place them into loving homes.
