This is a super old-school deli tucked away in the middle of a neighborhood. Before you walk in, they have posted instructions on how to order, which is helpful if it's your first visit. They have a huge selection of chips, drinks, and snacks, and everyone working there was very friendly. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak, deviled eggs, a pickle, and the broccoli salad. The Philly cheesesteak was good, but not the best I've had. I think their specialty is probably their classic deli sandwiches, so that's what I'll try next time. The deviled eggs weren't my favorite, and I probably wouldn't order them again. The broccoli salad and the pickle, however, were both delicious. Outside there's a table with a paper you fill out with your sandwich choice, bread and all the toppings. Very customizable to your taste! Got the crazy Reuben with lettuce, jalapeños, banana peppers on rye. Requested for mayo on the side but unfortunately didn't find out till later it was placed on the bread. An easily camouflaged building amongst neighborhood houses, Compagno's is a must for an action-packed day - we had a full schedule of hikes from Point Lobos to Big Sur and Compagno's made for the perfect on-the-go packed lunch and dinner (we both got the whole size and ate half each meal... the size of these sandwiches is no joke). It's Veteran owned and that's made loud and proud by the names of the specials (named after each branch in the military) and the interior decor. There's clipboards on the table in front of the shop that you fill out and bring to the deli counter where they make your sandwich, call your name, and ring you up at the register. I had the Marine special (chicken breast, bacon, Cesar dressing, melted pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickle) on Dutch crunch and my significant other had the Space Force (a newer variation of the chicken sandwich with Chick-fil-a Polynesian sauce). At first ordering, the inside felt a little off and I was skeptical because the sandwiches are just wrapped in saran wrap, maybe I'm just spoiled with nice packaging these days but it was so good. My husband and son and I went to eat lunch at Compagnos last week while staying in Monterey. My husband has eaten here often and he recommended we have lunch there. When I walked in it took me back in time to when I was a little girl going into a market with my grandparents back in the 60's-70's. The owner, Bennett, was at the register. He was checking orders and confirming what we ordered. He knew many of his customers by name and knew their regular orders. The sandwiches were HUGE so I ordered 1/2 a sandwich and I only finished 1/3 of the 1/2 sandwich. My husband and son ordered full sandwiches and only finished half of theirs. We took the rest home. We grabbed a whole sandwich to share for a day at the beach and it was perfect. We loved the sandwiches so much that we went back the next day to grab some for the roadtrip back home. Went and got their most popular sandwich, a $15 for half ($17? for whole) chicken Parm with avocado, bacon, cheese. It was ridiculously good. And a 1/2 sandwich was a sizeable meal as it turned out. Some army dude in front of me mentioned to his guests that a whole was enough to split into two meals (assuming the addition of sides). The Army Presidio is down the street which guarantees a customer base and the owner(s) decided they could sell on quantity AND quality apparently. Corner stores are the cornerstones of the US. From Italian delis to bodegas to mom & pop convenience stores--they're the best places to get the local vibes. Compagno's was the perfect, no-frills stop before heading to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They've got cold drinks and snacks (wide variety of chips) but if it's sandwiches you seek, fill out one of slips on the table outside and bring it to the counter. Bennett was so friendly and even quizzed us with a Jeopardy question while we waited for our sandwiches. The sandwiches were huge! I got the chicken breast, bacon, and avocado and he was kind enough to wrap my avocado separately since we had a bit until I was going to eat it. Real, fresh chicken! The mortadella one was also delicious. Bonus points: they were so kind to give a huge slice of delicious Oreo cake to my wife when we mentioned that we were in town for her birthday! We came for the sandwiches. And we stayed because we got stuck in the aisle. After 4 years of hearing people talk about this place like it was the hidden temple of carbs, my family and I finally made the pilgrimage. Expectations were sky-high. My stomach was empty. My spirit? I got the Coast Guard Special on Dutch crunch... except the Dutch forgot to bring the crunch. First bite: flavorful. By the fourth bite: I was in a committed relationship with this sandwich and unsure how to break up. Something was missing--maybe glitter, maybe magic, maybe just... closure. My daughter's turkey/ham/bacon/avocado sandwich came out looking like it bench presses smaller sandwiches for fun. And that was just the half-size. Subway could never. My husband had the Crazy Reuben, which wasn't crazy at all. It was more like the Reuben that calls it a night by 8:30 and drinks chamomile tea. Tasty? Yes. Revolutionary? Not exactly. The final bill? 3 sandwiches, 2 chips, 1 energy drink = nearly $60. At that point, I started checking if the sandwich came with equity in the deli. First, I grabbed the turkey, ham, bacon, and avocado full sandwich. I love deli sandwiches as they are always high on my list of things I look for when I want food. This sandwich was MASSIVE! The value alone for a $16 sandwich that, first of all, tastes amazing, but also gives you the ability to break that into two meals is a tremendous value. The bread choice was Dutch crunch and yes, it was perfect! Well balanced crust to softness ratio of the bread. Grabbed the chipotle mayo and pepper to go along with it and the sandwich was worth it all the way! Sandwich 8.3/10 Easily a go to spot when I am back in the area. Now, what surprised me next was while waiting for the sandwich I noticed about 5 different extremely large cakes. Oreo, Reese's, lemon, and German Chocolate caught my eye. I grabbed two slices the lemon and German Chocolate. I asked if they were homemade and that is all I needed to know. Stupid good. That's really the only way to describe how good these cake slices were. My wife and I enjoyed them. That was my experience at compagnos. The building is completely unassuming, sitting on the corner in a residential neighborhood. They had a deli case of sides available but I went straight for the money shot. As many reviews mentioned, there's a clip board with some menus posted up at the door. Hand over your filled out slip, take a gander at the huge selection of international chips and old school candy options. I ended up with Thai chili chips and some hi chew to accompany my chicken cordon bleu on whole wheat. Not sure why their menu calls it a half sandwich, as it was an entirely whole sandwich and plenty of food for one. The sandwich included a full chicken breast, completely juicy and well cooked with ham and Swiss cheese. All the fixins topped off what was a gloriously delicious sandwich. Will be back again. Ten out of ten would recommend. The guys behind the counter were courteous and efficient. The guy at the front counter seemed to be on his own time clock, but it was still a great visit. The owner or the person who does the order for the snacks has a keen eye for cool things. They have SO many unique flavors from alot of familiar brands and goods we eat on the daily. Let's not even start with the drink selection. Probably the longest and best selection of drinks! The #26 was me and my bfs fav. Get it with the chipotle mayo so so good. There are a bunch of sealed GI joe figurines along the top walls! Again, it was such a cool shop to stop into before heading to the beach. This is not to hype up the store, but the food is also good! Probably the biggest sandwich I have ever ordered/eaten in my life. Do not underestimate the size of their "full size" sandwich! I'm pretty sure a normal adult could probably be filled up with just a half size sandwich. They have a long list of preset/popular options, but you can also BYO and customize it as well. They have little papers that you can prefill out and hand to the folks behind the deli counter to make your sandwich, and then you pay at the cashier. They do a good job of plastic wrapping it to make sure it doesn't leak if you take it to-go. Do expect it to make a mess as it's a big sandwich with a lot of toppings. Sandwich tasted good, no complaints about the taste. The only thing is the tray they provided for the sandwich got soaked through before I could get through the sandwich, so be prepared for that. They are an actual market inside, so only some picnic tables outside to sit at, otherwise expect to take your sandwich to go. A few parking spots alongside their store wall, but could probably find some in the residential area and walk over as well. read more
