Still great after all these years! Just went yesterday for a #15 hoagie and it was delicious as ever. If you are an Italian dry salami snob like me, this is your spot. I'm 99% sure he still uses Molinari salami because the flavor, texture, and taste are absolutely impeccable. Italian dry salami quality in sandwich delis in the United States has drastically declined in the last couple decades. Not here though thankfully. The selection of uncommon chips and drinks is still top-notch...this has to be the only place I've ever seen Faygo in the Monterey area! The deviled eggs are still great also. I got there too late for broccoli salad. Bennett is still running the register, cracking jokes, and making smiles happen for his old regulars. And it looks like he has a really good crew currently. We will be back again and again. While I do enjoy the more upscale Italian sandwiches of Coniglio Bros on cannery row once in awhile, nothing slaps like a sandwich from an old school neighborhood minimart deli. If you'd like to order a sandwich, there is a picnic table outside with clipboards and order sheets. You can order off their very extensive menu of sandwiches, or create your own. There is a wide variety of bread, meat, and cheese options so everyone can find something they like. Be very cautious if you order a whole sandwich because saying they are huge is an understatement. When you are ready to order, you bring the sheet to the back left deli counter where they have their display and desserts. While we waited for our sandwiches, we took some time to look around the market. It is fantastic! The decor is lovely. The items they have in stock is also impressive. They have your basic items like chips and soda, but also a large international snack section. There are shelves of foreign chip flavors and drinks which is very neat. This is a super old-school deli tucked away in the middle of a neighborhood. Before you walk in, they have posted instructions on how to order, which is helpful if it's your first visit. They have a huge selection of chips, drinks, and snacks, and everyone working there was very friendly. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak, deviled eggs, a pickle, and the broccoli salad. The Philly cheesesteak was good, but not the best I've had. I think their specialty is probably their classic deli sandwiches, so that's what I'll try next time. An easily camouflaged building amongst neighborhood houses, Compagno's is a must for an action-packed day - we had a full schedule of hikes from Point Lobos to Big Sur and Compagno's made for the perfect on-the-go packed lunch and dinner (we both got the whole size and ate half each meal... the size of these sandwiches is no joke). It's Veteran owned and that's made loud and proud by the names of the specials (named after each branch in the military) and the interior decor. There's clipboards on the table in front of the shop that you fill out and bring to the deli counter where they make your sandwich, call your name, and ring you up at the register. First time going to Compagno's Deli, and not sure we will go for a while again. While the sandwiches are tasty, to wait over an hour was a bit excessive. The system of putting your order in the little black bin and waiting is lacking an actual system. The six employees that were making sandwiches were pleasant but my husband and I saw several holes to the system that could easily be corrected. Even while we were there waiting for an hour, multiple customers were missing their orders. The place has been around forever, so I'm sure they are set in their way. Wow, this sandwich blew my mind, I absolutely loved it! At first ordering, the inside felt a little off and I was skeptical because the sandwiches are just wrapped in saran wrap, maybe I'm just spoiled with nice packaging these days but it was so good. I got the Army Special and was packed with so much flavor from the condiments and the Dutch Crunch bread was also fantastic. So much food too and I think I got the half. When I walked in it took me back in time to when I was a little girl going into a market with my grandparents back in the 60's-70's. The owner, Bennett, was at the register. He was checking orders and confirming what we ordered. He knew many of his customers by name and knew their regular orders. The sandwiches were HUGE so I ordered 1/2 a sandwich and I only finished 1/3 of the 1/2 sandwich. My husband and son ordered full sandwiches and only finished half of theirs. We took the rest home.
