This was such a cute farmers market. Quite small but that was okay - it went with the small town vibes of Charlotte. We were able to come here and pickup some ingredients so we could make an African breakfast. The ingredients smelled fresh as you could smell the ripeness of the fruits and veggies. I purchased 3 bunches of greens and a lemon cake. The greens were rotten. I could barely salvage enough for my family. The lemon cake was so stale. It look delicious until i opened it and the icing was cruncy and the cake was stale. I'm calling the health department. The store is on Freedom drive. read more

Hello, 5/7/25 @ 12:32 pm Today my co-worker and I went to Compare Foods at 5601 South Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28210 and we were discriminated against. My co-worker is Mexican and I'm black and you would not think that at this place, but we did not feel welcomed at the hot service bar. We came there because today was supposed to be $5 tacos, but when we get there they told us that because they did 50 cents tacos for Cinco de Mayo, they were not doing it today. Well, they should have had a sign up stating that. Many people were coming for that and they store was out. They should have had a sign to ease the overwhelming group of people coming in. We decided to stay and order the $9.99 meal with a side. The young man behind the counter started working on my order. When a group of white people came from Hendrix Motor, he stopped attending to my order and went to theirs immediately. That is NOT right. NOT right. I don't care who you are. You go in the order of the line. My Mexican friend was shocked. I mean we just got overlooked. I got upset and asked for the Store Manager. They said the store manager was not there so I asked for the next in line. The Front End manager was there and I shared it with her. She went back to the service counter and asked what was going on. The young man seemed overwhelmed. There was not enough people working there or something. There are two sides to the hot meals and people should have been working both sides, asking for whose next. It was extremely unorganized. I don't know, maybe people were on lunch. I've never felt like this in a Compare Foods store. I was very disappointed. The lady that was at the counter had a little attitude as well and was not helping the one guy there that was getting all the plates. Not something I wanted to see being in that store for the first time. I ended up only getting food for a co-worker that was not with us because I promised her food. The co-worker that was with me and myself did not get food. We did get a fruit drink from the coffee and ice cream area and they were kind. Thank you. Compare Foods....do better now. We are brown owned business. Do better. I have a right to be in your store and be served accordingly. Also, as a suggestion because I work in corporate America as well. Visited several of these supermarkets while I visited Charlotte, North Carolina. The food that they sell, the cook food... Absolutely delicious. It reminds me of the "bodegas" in New York City, that sold food. I had Peneil, white rice, beans, brown gravy, sweet plantain, fried chicken, ox tails, and greens. The staff was exceptional. Very friendly. Very accommodating. Very friendly. There really isn't any "ambience" as the restaurant is in a literal supermarket. I highly recommend. Will definitely be back, the next time. I enjoy shopping at Compare Foods. Here, I know I will find the ingredients I am looking for. Other grocery stores are more hit and miss. I am giving them four stars because I often find it difficult to find someone to assist me with locating items. On this most recent visit, I could find no one to help me. Otherwise, the shelves were fully stocked and there was plenty of fresh produce and meats. That in itself is a great thing! Not only do they carry more International items, but they also have regular items that Americans use each day. In my family, we like to step out and try different things. Ok so Compare Foods...LOL! This place is really good, but also not so good at the same time. At Compare Foods, you can find a ton of things that you just can't find at other stores or places. Things such as fruits and vegetables, non-perishable items and dry goods, foods, snacks, drinks, etc. If you are not familiar with things at Compare, you can try them out and most of the time, you will really like what you've tried. They also have a meat and a seafood section....prepackaged meats and seafood items, as well as items that you can get from the butcher. However this is also the "not so good" in my opinion. The meats and seafood sections have a very "distinctive" smell. It is very overwhelming at times and sometimes is it bearable. I tend to avoid that section, since I normally purchase my meats/seafood elsewhere. There is plenty of parking in the lot, as well as in the strip-mall behind the supermarket. The staff is helpful and very nice if you need help and when going through the check-out line. The pricing is also good and not too expensive. Aside from the smell in the meat/seafood areas, it's a great place to get those unordinary items that you need. read more

I love this place. They have great produce and some really unique fruit options that I don't know if you could find elsewhere. I love the fact that you can also get spices in packets for literally half the price of what you'd find in store carrying the spice in a container. I simply save my containers and refill with these. I love being able to buy Mexican or Ecuadorian sour creme and lots of authentic Hispanic cheeses. I get cojita cheese to make my own elote. I like their bakery and love the fact that there are amazing food trucks parked outside the store that serve great tacos and elote. They even have a jewelry store inside. I come here to buy poblano peppers, chili de arbol, and tomatillos. They also have a great selection of Hispanic brands of vegetables, refried beans and salsas such as Goya and others. There's authentic hot sauces and even a place to buy beef and fish. I get all my tortillas here... They have multiple brands and sizes available. I'm a regular here. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I love that I can get cassava flour here like hella cheap. The produce is plentiful but not always the cheapest option to buy in town. Especially for the quality that can be hit or miss. But anything you might need for a Hispanic, Latin, Caribbean, African or almost anything ethnic you will most definitely find here. This place can get super crowded on the weekend and it can be hard to navigate through the produce section here when it is. And when the lines are long, they move slow. So slow. All the other things you will find in the store, are typical of any Hispanic style market - the bakery, the food stand, the jewelry. I would be offended if I came to a Hispanic market and these options were not available. It wouldn't be authentic. read more

I've got to agree with my Yelp pal Sam J who states, "this [place] has a huge heap of Hass avocados . . . and they are dirt cheap." Nowhere in the area have I found such abundance and variety of all things Latin when shopping for fresh ingredients (of course, I don't know how the hell to cook most of it). I have visited the other locations in Charlotte, too, and this one by far is the "sketchiest." If the owner of the shopping mall would fix it up, I'm sure their sales would go up, too, along with Le's Sandwich shop and the Asian Market. Compare Foods is an authentic, real deal. Just visited the compare foods location. First impression is don't be scared by the front the entrance. I noticed right away the fresh produce prices are hit and miss some lower some higher. We picked up some avocados and jalapeños to make some guacamole while we were here. Well this isn't listed as a Mexican/Hispanic market it surely has that feel. When you enter you also see a jewelry section to the left there's a butcher area in the back as well as a seafood area. Everyone was super friendly and helpful which would make me go again if I needed some additional items. The reason for the stars is that it seafood smelled from aisles away. read more

I gave Compare Foods two stars because the employees are kind and helpful .They have a large selection of hard to find products which is also nice , but there prices are ridiculously high. There produce is about 50% higher than there competition and there meats are of poor quality and 25% higher. This is the first grocery store I have ever been to that had a cell phone store and a jewelry store in the front. Hey, buy some groceries, pick up a G chain, and renew your cell phone plan all in one joint-I can handle that! It is by far the cheapest grocery store that I have ever been to, and that really isn't saying anything negative about the quality of any of the food. They have a great selection of Mexican food: cheeses, tortillas, sauces, and such. They also have grooves for every walk of life; I heard some 90's R&B go into some Ranchera music--pleasing everybody! While other have stated the pure value of the foods here as very cheap, I have to give applause to the security team here. I left the store without taking all my bags. For simply $1.76 of Ground Cumin, the security guy allowed me to watch his security camera to see what happened. I am of the same complexion as these individuals, however with little or no training in customer service, it's beyond me why they have any reason to be the face of compare. Am all for equal opportunities but not when the people employed do the company more harm than good. fantastic produce, love the bakery, crazy cheese selection, lots of ethnic items - but your standard dry grocery items are the same, if not more. and even though it's right next to the asian corner, I don't love how it (and the parking lot) is crammed into the corner of the intersection. Their guava cheese pastry is pretty good, but they have really nice fresh breads and assorted fruit filled goodness. The real reason I went was because I know their mangoes are always ripe (why cant HT get their act together?), but was so surprised by how great everything else looked - tons of greens, tons of roots, multiple avocado types, beautiful fruit... I didn't stare too hard at the cuts of meat, I knew I didn't need any, but I could tell they had some cuts HT doesn't usually display. Of course they have GOYA everything, and I happened down the cheese aisle and was blown away by the amount of cheese I hadn't been able to find elsewhere. Since a huge portion of them are all variances of slightly off white in color it took a minute to find what I was looking for, but when I did they had multiple options for it. Lots of fresh tortillas on the shelves, but there was even a woman selling them out of a cooler she was pushing around in her cart - if that's your thing. I happened to walk down the cereal aisle on my way to the registers and was really surprised how much they were charging for my daily choice. So, I'd check prices on the US brand items - but there's a good chance everything else is a deal. Coming from Queens NY, I used to shop in compare foods daily. The best thing about this store out here in the South is the Meat. Every type of meat you want you can find. I only buy my Platanoes, meats and fruits from there. Everything else is expensive. It's a NY Spanish Chain. There's no supermarket out here in the south that cells jewelry and cellphones lol. This store makes me feel like am back in NY. Depending on your culture or where you're from, this supermarket is not for everyone. But i would recommend people to go take a look. My experience was decent,however, I couldn't get over the smell. It felt sticky and dirty in the place. The thing that made me give such a low review is the fact they over charged me for a pound of green grapes.
